This is a large and spacious store. They've rearranged the shelving into a number of alcoves (my wording): two or three large shelves at right angles making a little room, rather than the previous orderly lines of shelves. I'm not sure this is an improvement, although it does make the store a little more cozy. This store has an enormous Mystery and Thriller section and a very large Fantasy section (the Science Fiction section, which is separate, is smaller but still adequate). The Manga section is also very large. They have a large selection of magazines; it's a newsstand in itself. About 1/4 of the floor space is given over to non-book items. There's also a Music and DVD department (fairly small) and a cafe. The staff have always been helpful, and checkout is usually speedy. B&N has a loyalty program, which you have to pay for ($25 per year), but it's worth it if you buy lots of books here. You get 10% off on everything and 40% off on bestsellers, and you can also use it in the cafe. read more

I'm in It for the Movies I still enjoy buying DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, but the brick and mortar stores are not what they once were. You can often find current films and TV series, but not so much on the random, older stuff. Barnes & Noble stores have a much stronger selection when it comes to movies. The manager of the café is arrogant, rude, and condescending. Hostile as well. I don't mind when someone behind the counter is a little short with me, maybe having a rough day. Customer service all day can take its toll. But to be outright arrogant and dismissive at a customer with an honest complaint, rather than correcting the problem in a professional way, means it's time to find another job. This guy isn't just bad at his job, he's an absolute jerk. It's not my first time having issues here. I once tried to buy an expensive Criterion blu-ray box set here, but the security device they attached to it was so tightly strapped around the box that it cut into the corners, noticeably damaging the box. It was a $200 box set. When I asked to source another one the staffer scoffed and rolled his eyes at me. What a sanctimonious prick. On another visit the cafe seating was full, so I sat on the bench with the bronze figures. A staffer shouted at me that I couldn't eat a pastry there. She didn't ask nicely, she just immediately berated me. It disturbed everyone in the café. Another horrible person. The main store management didn't seem much interested in my issue tonight either. When I asked for my money back, he went out of his way to let me know how much trouble it was for him to get me cash (he had to process a gift card and then convert to cash). Save your breath and do your job. Getting in another insult just to spite me is petty and childish. Seriously the staff here are awful. This is one of those places where the staff are all very biased to their political cult and perpetuate their personal values in the store rather than uphold the sort of professional impartiality you'd expect from a bookstore. Also the bathrooms are disgusting, not maintained. The only people they treat well are the homeless people wandering in and sleeping in corners. See how that works? They're hostile towards paying customers, and accommodating of loiterers who actively damage their business. Book store itself was beautiful and the staff were present. My colleagues and I decided to eat in the cafe for lunch. I was interested in the half sandwich and soup, however they were out of soup. I then chose the next best thing.... a sandwich (which comes with either chips or a banana). I chose the banana and was very displeased when I received it as it was nearly half black (I uploaded a pic yesterday to Yelp). I requested another banana and I was told that was all they had. I then asked if it might be possible for me to have the chips instead of the banana. I was told they didn't have any of the small bags of chips (that they give out with the sandwiches) but I was welcome to purchase the chips they had for sale. I was very displeased. My boss who also purchased a sandwich wasn't informed at the register that her sandwich came with a side. Unfortunately she was not interested in the over ripe bananas, or purchasing chips when they were to come free with the meal. I found the experience in the store pleasant, but the cafe was dreadful and will not eat at the cafe again. read more

I especially appreciate this store at the new year for its selection of planners, calendars, and journals, which also leads to looking at clever and pretty home office accessories, cards, and whatever gifty items might be nearby. There was a nice selection of Christmas/holiday decor remaining, but let it be known that aside from discounts on rolls of gift wrap, individual cards, and boxes of cards, they are the only retail store in the known universe to not put holiday merchandise on sale. Bah humbug, B & N. They are no obligation to do so, but it came across as rather petty and off-putting. Hence, the review. read more

There are not many brick and mortar book sellers left in this world and I love sitting down amidst the smell of books and reading. I also love browsing books although I have to admit that I mostly buy on Kindle today as it is just so much more practical. I still very much miss the smell, feel and crispness of a new book from you favorite author. So I now go to enjoy a nice cup of Joe and browse and occasionally buy a book if I simply cant resist. Books are beautiful and awesome and supporting a book seller is good for your soul ! So read a book! read more

Went to this store looking for a specific book. I stood 2 feet from a sales associate that was typing away at a terminal at the Customer Service desk. She looked at me and then looked back down and kept typing. I waited a minute while I doubted myself and thought maybe she didn't work there. I finally asked if she could help me find a book. She curtly replied that she was helping a customer (nowhere in sight) and she'd help me when she was done. What?! Couldn't she have greeted me when I walked up and told me she'd be right with me - and maybe in a kind voice. I reported this to another employee who didn't seem to understand the problem AND said that because she worked at the register I'd have to get help from the rude sales associate. This store has the broadest selection of print/paper books in Boulder, is easy to access with convenient parking and has a cafe inside, but please realize that though it sells Starbucks products, it is not a Starbucks, just a Barnes and Noble Cafe. They also have lots of non-book items, both gift and children's toys and digital/nook options. The store is very self serve but you can hunt down some help. It is quite clean and bright. They have a new service called "pick me up" so you can look at their website, choose an item, check availability at a local store and enter your name, phone, email and it will be waiting at the counter within an hour. I used it today for something we needed right away, it was in stock and ready in 15 minutes and I had been notified before I got there. Though I read mostly digitally now, so I don't come here as often as I used to, some things like art books or regional, local material are still preferable or only available printed. And this is my first choice in Boulder to get it. Prices are variable, some items at full list, some on sale. Most are not as cheap as internet purchase but there are many occasions when browsing in person or immediate availability are important. read more

Just departed the Boulder store searching for international travel guides. Observed none of the books were in alphabetical order, in fact in no order at all. Asked the young man at the desk, who was not busy, for help and when I told him they weren't in alphabetical order he wanted to argue the point. Once he saw they weren't, he said they were in an order related to geography. I pointed out two books next to one another, one from Asia and one from Europe---his response was they were geographically close. I suggested he should speak to the manager about the total disarray the books were in and he responded they didn't pay him enough money to be bothered. I gave up at this point recognizing the store has bigger problems that a bit of organizing of the travel section isn't going to solve. Lesson learned: next time go to Loveland and the Centerra shopping center where employees care. read more

It's Barnes & Noble, it gets 3 stars for that. A couple of weeks ago I had ordered a journal online. When I received it in the mail, it looked like some of the pages were warped. Very clearly on the receipt, it said, "For your convenience you can return this item at a store near you." So I thought I would just drop by this one because it's near my office. When I arrived the cashier said they wouldn't take it back because it was an online item only. I showed the guy my receipt. He called his manager and said, "There's a woman here who wants to return something that is an online item only." It was just so cold and weird, like I was the one doing something that was out of line? So the manager came up and said to me, "This is an online item only." I showed her my receipt. She again just repeated herself. It was like they were robots. Then today I picked up a few things and was looking specifically for an astrology deck of cards that I had purchased before for a friend and now I wanted a set for myself. I also needed to order some magazines for an event a month out. I had been standing in line for 20 minutes. There were tons of people there when I arrived at the line. There was one person left behind me and there were 2 cashiers. When I inquired about the cards she told me that if there wasn't such a long line she would be happy to look that up for me, but that I'd have to go to customer service. (No one was at customer service and she said she'd have to call someone to meet me.) Then she told me they don't order magazines. Seriously? Fail and fail. I had already been standing in line for a while. She didn't seem to have any issues helping the last people there... Do they get kickbacks for selling memberships? That seems to take a while even if there is a long ass line. Perhaps looking something up doesn't render the same incentive. I'm fine with shopping Amazon online from now on. read more

This store has its flaws, as reflected by the comments made by the other reviewers, however I am reluctant to give this store less than four stars. I personally love to study here. I sometimes have difficulty studying in bookstores or cafes because they are too loud for me to enter deep concentration mode. This place isn't like that; they don't play music (for better or worse), and I appreciate that. Aside from that, there is good ambiance here. I love the feel and environment that this Barnes and Noble exudes. It has lots of knick knacks and toys, which are fun to look at. It has lots of books to choose from, and the staff are very nice. They continuously work to keep the store tidy. Lastly, just note that your Starbucks card will not be accepted here. They serve Starbucks drinks, but the cafe is independently owned by Barnes and Noble. Cruel world indeed. read more

It is a Barnes and Noble, same as any of their other locations. The inside decor is slightly above others but the magazine section seems smaller than other B&N. The parking lot is very congested at this shopping center and you have to do some car gymnastics in order to get out of it and get back on Pearl. read more

The old store was all right, but the new one is FANTASTIC. The large windows make it a wonderful place to be during the day. Yes, it's corporate, but that means the place is clean, the selection is pretty good for recent titles, and it is ACCESSIBLE. I gave up on a large independent bookseller on the Mall after they explained that their building is exempt from accessibility requirements, but that they really ARE accessible because they are willing to track down any title I'd like and bring it to me, if I can get into the store. So, in Boulder, my choice is BN for accessibility. The economics of bookselling is that no brick and mortar store can afford to keep titles on the shelf that don't move themselves along. So their selection of Ruth Rendell titles, for example, tends to be quite limited. One exception is their art section, where they might have something you want or at least decide you want after you look at it. Compared to Amazon, even with a BN membership the prices are not great. But BN is often able to meet my wish for immediate gratification, which is -- literally, I'm afraid -- a big selling point for them. The chairs in the cafe and elsewhere in the store are often completely full. But people do move along, so if you lurk I mean look at books near your target area in the store, something will likely open up. A revelation about the cafe is that it is actually possible to get non-snotty coffee service in Boulder. These folks offer to heat up a cookie, get help on board quickly when a line develops, and are unfailingly cheerful and polite. And it absolutely floors me that because I stop by a day or two a week, they actually try to remember my name. Coming from Portland with its Powell's Inter-galactic book complex, Colorado was a real "down" for me, book-wise. BN isn't Powell's, for sure, but for me it beats the Big Independents in Boulder and Denver, alike. I'm sorry about that because I would have preferred to find an independent, but BN is what hits it for me. read more

I lost my Nook Simple Touch and because I'm a total Nook Addict, I purchased a new one. (Nook w/ Glow Light as well as a new case). Almost two weeks later, I received an email from the B&N in Boulder saying that my lost Nook had been turned in and was waiting for me in their safe. I go in the next day and they gave me my Nook and even charged it while I shopped so we could make sure all was well. AND.... they totally let me return the new Nook and case I'd bought to replace the one I'd lost - even though it was pushing the limits of their return policy. One star lost for: B&N's Home Office needs to pull their heads out of the rear ends and spend some money on payroll. Every time I'm in there all of the employees are pushed to their limits because each one is doing the job of several employees. Short sighted and LAME. read more

I was at this store on a December day when it was raining. I purchased something from the cafe, and I have been a paying member for years. At 7:57pm, I started walking towards the bathroom. The manager, a tall middle-aged man, promptly turned me around. I said that I just needed to pee and he said that "everything was already shut down". They close at 8pm. You cannot deny a paying customer use of the bathroom when you are still open. And I would have been done and out by 7:59. By the time I left, it was HEAVILY snowing. And what would normally take me thirty minutes to drive home took three HOURS. So. It would have been nice if this prick had let me pee before getting stuck in the snow, considering the store was OPEN. Boulder is definitely a college town, so perhaps he is used to bossing around kids or something. I am an almost 40 year old man, and I will be reporting this. Pull your shit together. read more

We love the popular books stands at the front of the store that lure you to the sections they came from, such a hook for finding interesting topics and books! The kids section is large, clean, has lots to play with, and is well lit. The checkout, however, is only on one side of the store and sometimes I forget to park on that side, which is no biggie, the walk is good for me! The books are well organized and the staff are polite and know their books. We have yet to run into any problems with this store, or any other B&N for that matter, guess we aren't snooty enough to make big issues out of small mistakes. read more

Why do we come here? Convenient parking, proximity to Whole Foods is about it and the fact that they have a cafe. The workers are friendly in Starbucks (cafe) and at checkout. Not easy to find somebody to help you find a book or other product, though. There's no other bookstore nearby except Boulder Bookstore (downtown Boulder) which likely requires fighting traffic and paying for parking; they lack a cafe, too. Boulder Library is a choice but here again, traffic, congestion and a very small (sometimes closed) cafe. The Library has other issues, too but no need to wander to that topic... The tables in B & N cafe are too small and seating is limited. People are sitting with a pile of books & magazines and snacks/drinks and the tables are sized for Lilliputians! The men's bathroom is disgusting, always filthy, and with a strong smell of urine. Floors throughout store are dirty; in fact the whole store is unclean and furniture is wearing out. This is surprising because this B & N is only a few years old. Won't even mention the homeless people who spend some daylight hours here (when shelters are closed). This is a nationwide issue but suffice it to say, that if you bring children, they may be put off by some of the "customers". When one considers the amazing location, huge inventory and potential, this store could be awesome! If management reads this: clean the store, expand and improve cafe seating, have a smiling salesperson at the front door. Make those changes and your business would certainly improve! read more

The café staff goes out their way to be super friendly and, if you want to read, the lack of music here is a big plus. Regarding the other reviews there is one homeless man who sits quietly in a corner at times but the overwhelming majority of people are studying or working on laptops. It's not really their fault, but I do wanna state that I was trying to peacefully find a book when a man out of no where starts hitting on me (if that's even the correct term) in a very strange way and telling me I should do shrooms and how he puts a little crystal meth under his tongue and how it's therapeutic... My brother has had addiction issues for years so I have sympathy and absolutely no judgement, but it did make me uncomfortable especially when he asked me to go to the movies and get food and I had to politely decline. He wasn't threatening because he was so calm, but definitely not what I wanted on my outting to the book store and left the section with nothing because I was uncomfortable and wanted to leave. He was definitely a homeless man that needed shelter which I would not mind at all, but I don't want anyone approaching me, especially not when it entails what I went through. It's a chain. I know this is a sin in Boulder County, but as chain stores go, this is one of the better B&N locations. They've got decent stock and a very nice atmosphere with reading chairs and tables near a central "fireplace" area and lots of sunlight to read in-store if you wish. I've also attended a few story time/music performances here so it can't be too much of a blight on the Boulder community. read more

This is the only Barnes and Noble with FREE WIFI I've seen. Sometimes it's nice to get away from the smug Boulder coffee shop and book store scene and be able to relax in a clean corporate environment. Quiet, comfortable, nice. Until I found that the price on the B&N website is $20 and at the store is $30! Pointed it out to cashier and got a brusque "we don't price match". What can I say? I try to not be a big box person. I've tried so many of the great coffee shops in Boulder. If i want to sit and have a coffee and "work" for 5 hours because I'm unemployed and don't want to sit at home all day, I come here. They have free wifi and tables and lots of outlets. There's a fireplace and armchairs. There are big tables and small tables. No one bugs you if you sit for 5 hours and they don't give you attitude.
