I loved the fact that this new age bookstore was tucked away down a flight of stairs, which added to the fact that I was intrigued by it. There is a huge selection of books along with all kinds of spiritual items, incense, candles, etc. I loved that there was a variety of spirituality followings represented and the store itself smelled amazing. We didn't have a ton of time to spend in this store but the young lady at the counter gave us a friendly greeting and left us to explore the rows of shelves. Definitely something for everyone here!

Yes! Finally, my philosophy degree can get some practical use...by telling you all that 'metaphysical' book stores are not only almost exclusively full of wishy-washy wishful thinking crap...but also that they are misusing the term 'metaphysical.' Let us get educated: Metaphysics (thank you Wikipedia, I heart you): is the branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the ultimate nature of reality, being, and the world.[1] Its name derives from the Greek words (met) (meaning "after") and (physik) (meaning "after talking about physics"), "physics" referring to those works on matter by Aristotle in antiquity.[2] Metaphysics addresses questions that have existed for as long as the human race - many still with no definitive answer. Examples are: * What is the meaning of life? * What is the nature of reality? * What is mankind's place in the universe? * Does the world exist outside the mind? * What is the nature of objects, events, places? A central branch of metaphysics is ontology, the investigation into what types of things there are in the world and what relations these things bear to one another. The metaphysician also attempts to clarify the notions by which people understand the world, including existence, objecthood, property, space, time, causality, and possibility. -- Ok, so New Agers thought it would be a cool idea to high-jack this respectable and ancient field of inquiry by stealing the term metaphysical. This I suppose was to bring out the fact that they were interested in what was beyond this physical world: i.e. spirits, faith-healing, or self-faith-spirit-Buddhist-incense-psychic-clairvoyance-healing, or whatever. Anyway, the Lighthouse Bookstore on the corner of Pearl street mall and Broadway is one such shop. I came in here not on my own volition but since someone else was enamored. Nonetheless, I bought some incense - not because I think it will help me to see another dimension, or help me meditate (which I'm not against btw) but simply because it smells nice? The guy at the counter was quite aware of his role as liaison to the 'metaphysical' which I guess didn't come off that well, since the guy in front of me yelled something at him and left in a huff. Eh....incense was cheap. The other stuff I wouldn't suggest, but hey...it's your time and money, yo'

Now it is mostly eateries, some are excellent, but this shop is at a section that has some old classic retail, like Neptune Mountaineering and the yarn shop, Shuttles Spindles and Skeins and is just below them and just east of King Soopers. It's worth the trip. Though there are many scented items in the store it did not bother me, not overpowering or particularly artificial like some gift shops. The collection is very traditional, a somewhat elegant collection, some items more unique than others. Several items I have seen here and there around Boulder, from Peppercorn to McGuckins, especially holiday themed ones. But it was a pleasure to look for and find gifts for that hard to choose for recipient all in one place. I was welcomed and helped with selection of ideas. Not a busy place when I was in, and was appropriately staffed.

Right from the get go, Art Mart doesn't consist solely of artwork. There are way more apparel, jewelry, homegoods, tchotchkes, and the like than there is actual artwork here, which is why it's a great one-stop shop for souvenirs! My friends and I bought matching Boulder shirts here because the artwork on the shirts were to die for! They were the cutest and we were able to snag the shirt in multiple different colors with the same design on them, so they were matching, but also slightly more unique in their own ways. This place is a great stop at the beginning AND end of your visit to Boulder and Pearl Street Mall because trust that you will not find anything cuter! That is what we did - this was the first store we popped into and saw so many cute things we liked, but held off on getting anything because we had just gotten here. We ended up popping into nearly every single store that looked appealing to us up and down the mall and ended by coming back to this store to get our shirts because truly, we didn't find anything we liked more than that! It was a lovely Boulder souvenir and such great quality! I have enjoyed wearing it ever since!!
