Barnes & Noble has been my happy place since I was a teenager. There is nothing better than browsing books, gifts and magazines for hours on a rainy day. Since Amazon became a conglomerate, it washed away the experience of going to a book store and test driving the books before purchase. It's similar to going to a record store, another pastime of mine. Today I scored a "Cheap" signed edition hardcover deal for $7 but often I find the prices here expensive. This store has a clean and organized layout. I love the diversity in the books here. So many wonderful black authors to check out. Barnes also carries unique gifts and cards for special occasions. Been coming to this Barnes & Noble for a few years and have never had a bad experience! Have rarely needed help from staff, but they're nice and helpful. The selection of books, movies, music and toys is wide and the place is very nicely organized. The Starbucks cafe area is also nice, depending on the day it can be very busy, but the baristas are nice and try to get your order as fast as they can! I haven't used the Starbucks at this location, so I can't comment on their quality/service. In general, I try to avoid the Bucks. The bookstore is pretty nice, but I find that it is often filled with screaming/wreckless children and unattentive parents. The book selection is decent, but it is hard to find a non-military book. The foreign-language book selection is also lacking. I know that the store probably tries to cater to what the community wants (and not individual weirdos like me), but I long for the giant, bohemian-filled Barnes & Nobles of the big cities. read more

Went here today just to visit Starbucks and look around! Hubby got the spinach and artichoke quiche with a 'frappe of the day' to benefit children's literacy. The quiche was served hot (microwaved) and hubby said he liked it a lot. His frappe on the other hand he didn't like, I know it had white chocolate mocha and some gritty chocolate shavings. Not good, glad we got a small. Quiche was a medium portion for $4.75 I got my usual caramel macchiato (hot) which was great! I always have to add a little sugar but that's at almost every coffee house I go to. I also got a pumpkin spice bundt for $2.75 and it was an alright size. I shared it with my 3 yo daughter. Daughter picked out a sparkling grapefruit Izze drink which she didn't like (of course) but was quite tasty to me. Tasted just like a grapefruit only not too bitter yet not too sweet. Today was Children's Literacy day (which we had no idea of until after showing up) and they had a fire fighter come in to read to the children. There was a good crowed of at least 10 kids. Right now (not sure when it ends) you can support Children's Literacy by perchasing a 'frappe of the day' or buying a book from the children's list and donating it. read more

I'm not sure what was going on a few months or years ago, but it seems the issues may have been fixed. I've been in the store a few times now to get activity books for my 3 year old and have always had several staff members ask if we needed any help, the place is very clean and organized and they have a great selection of books. In a day and age where you can get a lot of these electronically it's still nice to have a place where you can take the little ones and actually hold and read a book. read more

I called Barnes and Noble to see if they had a book in stock. They told me they did not so I asked if I could reserve it over the phone for their next shipment. The lady paused for a second and told me "No you can't reserve it over the phone. I have to reserve it." Wait.. what!? Then she asked me with an attitude "Well would you like to reserve it!?" I then proceeded with the process and gave her my information. First an foremost let me start by asking the reader not to take this as a bash. Barnes and Noble has always been a great store in my personal opinion. I love their variety and abundance. Their customer service is also generally great. However today's transaction was not held up to my expectations of great customer service. Last night my husband was about to place a purchase on their website and the shipping was to be delivered by Friday (yesterday was Wednesday). By the time he was about to check out, the shipping changed to next Tuesday due to the stroke of midnight! Yes we are in the Christmas season, and yes it's a bit of last minute shopping for online, but we tried. So we decided to purchase the items in store instead but we noticed that there was a huge price difference between online and in store. I went into the store today since my has been reserved the items to be purchased. I asked about price matching Barnes and Noble's website for the items since they were cheaper online. The young lady at the register instead of giving me a yes or no answer, told me that I can get one of their $25 memberships. I didn't ask about a membership, I asked if they can price match their online store. She proceeded to let me know that she needed to get a manager's approval so she called the manager to the front. I waited very patiently allowing others waiting in line behind me to go ahead and check out so I didn't hold up anyone. When the manager came up to the register I explained to her the situation of how we try to order online and missed the deadline. I asked her if there was anyway possible that she could price match the online store. She told me that they do not price match their own online store unless you have a membership. I reconfirmed with her that in order for me to get a better price match discount I would need to spend $25 to get the membership, she confirmed. I asked her then if she can show me in writing where it says in their membership agreement that they do price match their online store for members only so in the future if I did decide to get the membership I could hold them accountable for that statement. She told me that there's nothing in their membership agreement that says that they price match their online for members only, but that it was something that they were only doing during the holiday season and that it is at the stores discretion. After she told me that, I called my husband to reconfirm with him if he wanted to go ahead and get the membership or look elsewhere. My husband told me that he found the same books on Amazon for a lot cheaper and because of our prime membership we could get free shipping and they would be to our house by Saturday. I let the store manager know that the prices for the same books are cheaper on Amazon, and if she would like to sell me the books at Barnes & Noble's.com website price or we would go ahead and purchase them through Amazon. She reconfirmed with me that she could not honor the online price unless I had the $25 membership. I have spent over 15 years in retail customer service, I don't know one store manager that would opt to lose a sale to another company over the simplicity of a membership. To me this makes no sense because she basically just lost a sale. I would have been more inclined to get the membership had she been a little bit more lenient with price matching their website. I feel as if she had the discretion to give me the online price regardless of whether I had the membership or not. I know that these places get brownie points for selling memberships, but was it really worth losing a sale? Long story short Amazon is cheaper than Barnes and Noble. read more

I absolutely love Barnes and Noble. Always have! This place is perfect for just picking up a magazine, getting a cup of coffee, or using the free wi-fi that is available. There hours of operation are exceptional. I wish they were open 24 hours, but maybe sometime in the near future they will. Their building is relatively clean. I can't argue with the customer service. I used to love this place and come daily. I love books and buy many. I've found this store has started selling junk books, and toys all he most popular titles have to be ordered. Customer service has become like books-a-million. They are clearly having trouble finding employees, very rarely enough workers for their location. Also people don't seem to enjoy their job, they are grumpy and frustrated when you ask for help, & act like it's a chore. I sure wish they'd carry more selections to choose from. It's gone downhill since books a million. Closed it's like all their workers have started working here. I have to order books if at all, but that's funny cause there is no problem locating toys. Everytime I visit this place, it's soothing and relaxing. I enjoyed going here and reading some fictional books and selections, and I'm a big political reader and they have plenty of options, Wilmington BN was bigger and has more political books but this was Jacksonville N.C, so nothing to expect much. I usually order all nooks and accessories online, but thought I would support local today... big mistake! Really loved visiting this location, tons of really good books to choose from. My daughter got a couple books she really enjoyed and my husband got a book for himself. We also stopped into the Café and the Barista was super nice. My husband got an iced coffee and he loved it and I got an iced vanilla latte made breve and it came out perfect! We also had a classic vanilla cupcake to share and it was a good pairing with our coffee, my daughter loved the icing. We'll definitely be back! :) read more

The drinks are hit or miss depending on who is working behind the counter. I'd stay away from getting a tea based drink any time after late afternoon. They let it sit and it can be very bitter, no amount of sweetner can save it, but I prefer this location to the one adjacent to the Jacksonville Mall parking lot. read more
