My husband had something to do in town today so he brought me by to spend some birthday money, since my birthday was on Thursday. I bought 3 books, totaling $38 and some change. All 3 were about traveling in America which is right up my alley because we typically go on one big trip a year. One of the books was specifically about National Parks and during our trip in June we plan to go to at least 3 National Parks. The store was very well organized and (despite probably being smaller) felt bigger than the Mishawaka location. Everything was easy to find and displayed nicely. Lots of books were even discounted, which was also nice. Employees were nice and made checkout easy. I do tend to prefer small/locally owned stores, but as far as Barnes & Noble go, this location is pretty cool. read more

After shopping but not quite ready for dinner, I browsed the shelves of B&N looking for a good deal on some mindless fiction and found some in the bargain shelves. Barnes and Noble does do a good job with marking down some of the "no longer recent bestsellers" to prices that are actually decent. There are some spots in the store where you can sit and read peacefully while you make your mind up about what you might or might not purchase. A few individual chairs here and there plus four large "community" tables. They do have a wifi but I did not spot any power outlets. I love thier Starbuck, they have wonderful offers with membership. Barnes and noble brings variety of books. I love how they have quite and small areas for readers to check out their favorite books. They have comfy couches,and chairs as well. There is an area for gifts, bookmarks and small devices. They do many discounts most often. I don't normally like chains, but I love that our local B&N has great events (including their awesome Get Pop Cultured one this past summer!). There's an excellent selection of Michigan books, art supplies, a fun kids area (maybe 1/3 of the store? thank you!), a variety of seating options (fewer big chairs than I'd like, an area with lovely big wooden library tables for working, and cafe tables near and in the starbucks), and very helpful staff at the help desk. The downside? Always a line to check out, at least when I've been there. A good option for book lovers, in addition to the other great bookstores in town. read more

I have been a loyal customer of Barnes and Noble since 2005. I have escaped into their book racks multiple times and found treasures of books, magazines, bookmarks and the like. The store was my happy place, but that has come to a close. I'm not exaggerating when I say I visit this store every other day. The employees have come to learn my name and I have done the same with theirs. Recently, some instances have happened, mainly with 1 employee, and I thought I could shake it off. Today, it happened again and this time, I just can't continue to visit a store that treats loyal patrons like my son and I were treated today. Support local bookstores, like This is a Bookstore/Bookbug or Kazoo Books. Even better, cut the prices and buy through Amazon. I thought I would never "cross over to the dark side" of buying elsewhere, but 16 years of patronage means nothing to these folks. Nothing will happen I'm sure. This store will continue to sell books and take in the $25 membership fee. I've contacted the corporate offices twice and I get a nice email in return but the behavior hasn't been squashed. I understand the world is short-staffed right now, doesn't mean we can't be pleasant/nice/RESPECTFUL/kind to one another. read more

This is my place I come to when I need something to do. I really enjoy how they rearrange the book stacks every so often so things appear in a different place than previously. This makes me notice things I may have overlooked last time. Their selection of board games, Funko, and kids' toys are wonderful. I love the children's books, there are so many different styles and subjects and ages. I always stop at the Starbucks on my way out and just sip on a nice drink while casually looking over my purchases. Because let's be real, I always make a purchase. My kids looove this Barnes and Noble, and they don't even know the Starbucks cafe exists! It is a deep joy to go to the children's section to read, play with the various stuffed animals and puppets and play with the train tracks. They used to do group story time led by a sweet staffer, but those are probably suspended due to Covid (we aren't visiting during this window, too). Nonetheless, this location is consistently life-giving, full of wonderful books and lovely employees. read more

I have always loved B&N since I was a kid. Whenever we go visit neighboring countries, this is always on the itinerary. I love that I can grab a book, sit on the floor and read or you can grab a seat and read. Either way, Bookstores make me happy & relaxed. Well, if anyone knows me... they know I love books! Cook books, thrillers, drama, sci-fi.... I love them all! And this is definitely the place to come, grab a good book, and hang out for hours on end. They have an amazing kids section with every book your child could want! If they don't have it, tell the cashier and they can order it ! Did I mention how much I love this place? And you know what makes this place even better? They have a cafe with Starbucks in it ! Yep, coffee and books, where is the bad in that?? They also host some amazing events, the Harry Potter ball, superhero events, cosplay events... it's all amazing! I've been a frequent patron of Barnes & Noble Cafe since I went to college. I like the environment. It's a big enough space that you can usually find a seat, and the hours are such that you can avoid the busy times to have quiet time to study. I usually get an Americano or a Hot Coca with soy. They always have a good selection of cheesecake and baked goods if you're in the mood for something sweet. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is that the last 2 times I've gone the small snacks they sell at the counter have been stale. I'm on a restricted diet right now and I can't get baked goods, so I thought I'd get a coffee and some mixed nuts and a kind bar. They were both stale. I told the attendant, and they were very friendly about exchanging them. I exchanged them for the same exact products and encountered the same problem. Stale. I asked for a refund at this point, which was no problem. I just wish they kept up on their dates and reordered their supplies more frequently. All in all though, I would still go back. I just will brink my own snacks from now on. read more

In the winter, not so much in the summer, I am here a couple of times a week for coffee and just happen to find a book or magazine to buy. As somebody already said, it is a great place to meet a friend, the cafe doesn't have students taking up tables for the entire day like some cafes in the area have. Ove the years the book selection has become increasing smaller. The toys and games have been given too much space. I have to admit that I have found a book here and ordered it from Amazon while I am there. I would buy less at Amazon if this store had a better selection. I still enjoy coming here. read more

Issac H in the Portage, Mi location was great! They were incredibly social and making conversation with me about the book I bought. They also didn't make me feel uncomfortable when I was having a hard time speaking due my struggle to exist in public. I feel like it's kinda expensive though. Idk if that's just me. It always stands to reason that if I end up going in here, I'll end up with an empty wallet and a sack full of new books and magazines. It's my absolute favorite place to kill a stack of hours- lots of books, comfy overstuffed chairs, and a built-in Starbucks for a quick shot of caffeine to keep you going through that last few rows to find interesting books or great surprises for your kids... I love to bring my niece here to let her play with the train and the legos while S and I take turns searching the shelves. She likes to grab piles of children's books, I love to dig the graphic novels, manga, fantasy and mystery shelves for great finds. Honestly, I could just take a day and do nothing but walk the aisles and check out some authors I've been meaning to- just pull a copy of something interesting off the shelf, take a seat in a comfy armchair I would do many things to own, and see if the insides are as good as the outside- and repeat from open till close, until I go home with a bag full of enough books to last me a few weeks. They don't keep a big backlog of older stuff here- if the book you want is out of print by a couple months, you might have to get them to order you a copy, or if that fails, you'll have to resort to eBay or Amazon to find it. They're booksellers, not miracle workers. Also, the cafe food is good, but it IS Starbucks, so you'll want to budget for that. All in all, it's a nice place to find your next magazine or sackful of reading material! read more

Also, my beau was looking for a book that was still in Hardback (and part of a best seller series), but they didn't have it. This is the worst B&N I've been to. The selection is average, the cafe is average, but the customer service is horrific. The employees I've encountered here don't seem to know much about the products they carry. My first experience with this was when they invited me to join their membership program as I checked out. I asked what it would entail, and she said, "Um, I'm not sure, but here's the pamphlet. If you have any questions, you can always call the customer service number on it." I understand that the cashier is obligated to ask all customers who don't currently have memberships if they would like to join, but I feel that this should, at the very least, be coupled with basic knowledge about the program. The second experience was when I was considering purchasing the Nook color back in January. Their "Nook guy" had called in sick. There was another guy there who they said could help, but he told me he was supposed to have left ten minutes ago and hightailed it out of the store. That left no "Nook-trained" specialist to assist me, and someone else said she would try. She tried to be helpful but was utterly unable to answer any of my questions. She said that the Nook was just like the iPad. It's not. When I mentioned that I was worried about the life expectancy of the product, she said that it could live as long as anywhere between "tomorrow and a year from now." And that was when I thanked her and walked out of the store. Maybe my expectations for brick and mortar super bookstores are too high, but I'm thoroughly disappointed in this B&N. If I'm looking for a bookstore to visit, I'll go to one of the local stores instead. read more

Not a bad B and N, but the wi-fi connection is the WORST I've experienced in any commercial establishment. Long load times for web pages and streaming music is impossible. I have to use my iPhone's personal hotspot for $$$ when I'm here. You need to fix this (at least it's working most of the time, unlike a few months ago.) It's average friendly; much better than say the downtown Chicago B and N off State Street THough the book selection there reminds me of what B and N used to be like when people actually read books (Notice how many people are reading mags in the cafe versus books). If you want to experience truly down-home B and N try Muskegon's at Lakeview Mall. Staff is having fun and all sorts of activities going on in the cafe. read more

Love Barnes and Noble because it's a great meeting place for my friends and I to get a coffee and chat! Love the magazine selection and the Starbucks. I buy a lot of books for myself and my kids, but there is always an older woman lurking around, picking up our stack of books and asking if we're done with them. This has happened on numerous occasions, making us all feel like we should leave. (Usually in kids area) It gets frustrating and she makes everyone feel uncomfortable. Stop rushing people and let them be! Clean up any unpurchased books AFTER customers leave, not while they're still sitting there with them! One night, about 15 minutes to closing time, I heard her complaining LOUDLY to another employee, about how she had to cover a break and when she returned, the kids area was 'SUCH A MESS!!' I am book lover but not a book buyer. I used to come here a lot when I owned a business and would conduct business meetings. The cafe staff is friendly and the quality of the cafe items is pretty good. The kids section is okay, except for overpriced toys and media (who buys movies at B&N?). There is a station for little kids to build Legos/blocks. I know it is a book store, but the atmosphere is stale. I blame it on employee engagement - people generally seem bored working there, or at least not overly excited. If you want a in place to buy books and participate in literary events, try Bookbug instead. read more

How does one make the smell of coffee even more enticing? By adding the aroma of books. Boom- Heaven on Earth. Every time I'm here I take deep breaths to savour it all. If you love books, this is the perfect place to treat yourself to. Spend an hour perusing the shelves finding your next read with a Starbucks coffee in hand (from their cafe) or once you find the one you want, go start reading it in the cafe. For those less enthusiastic about books and/or coffee, it's a good place to kill an hour if you're waiting to go see a movie or your S/O is taking their time in the strip mall. Their range of distractions is what they specialise in (that's why many people read): magazines, novels, text books, music, movies, cook books, how to books, encyclopaedias, history books, classics, the list goes on. Everyone could find something to read there. They also have great gifts such as journals, planners, book ends, decorations, cards, ereaders, and gift cards. read more

I love this store. It has great variety of books and food. Yes I admit it could improve and update it's stock on comic books, but hey it's not going to have the newest and best comics all the time. One most interesting thing that it does is that it's comforting to be there and it doesn't try to be a library. It's just a great bookstore won things that makes it five stars though you won't realize it until your think about the or your Ron Swanson is that it's quiet. You can hear the jazz music clearly. Ot's just overall my favorite store. Which makes me sad about if shopping online takes over which would end this store as we know it. So overall five stars. read more
