I wished I knew of this place years ago!! House plant addicts this is the place to go! It's such a happy place to be, I'm so sad I can't enjoy this place longer (moving out of state). Great plant selections, super super happy and healthy plants, friendly and helpful staff.

In a word: unique. The Kalamazoo/Comstock area is greenhouse-tastic and all the shops sometimes start to blur together. Not River Street Flowerland. As I walked through their extensive collection, I kept thinking: ooh ... What's that? (A "tree peony" in which a peony is grafted onto a small tree resulting in dinner-plate-sized blooms) Or: Ooh ... I've never seen that plant in that color (an azalea in a firey shade of orange). Or ooh: I've never seen an Iris that tall (seriously 3-feet-high). Their perennial options will knock your socks off, and they've got lots of magical little seating areas if you just don't ever want to leave. Alas, they didn't have the peach tree I was seeking but I found lots of other delights to tide me over. Be sure to enjoy their topiary options ... A menagerie of flower-haired animal plant sculptures. Their peacocks are particularly impressive. I've been buying flowers from them at the Bronson Park art fair for years if I just finally got a chance to pop into their store yesterday, and I will certainly be going back every year. A shopper I chatted with while browsing their selection said she comes all the way from Battle Creek because there's just no place like it.

Somebody told me once that Comstock has more greenhouses than anywhere else in the country. I have no idea if that is true but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Up until '09 Bell's Greenhouse in Comstock was my go to retail greenhouse every spring - but then it mysteriously closed in '10 without a whimper - so since then River Street Flowerland has been my default for annuals and vegetables. The place is always well stocked, the staff are knowledgeable and gracious, the parking is spacious, and the topiary and other garden sculptures make me smile.
