We came to Kalamazoo with three places to go, Farefare being one of the places. We hadn't realized they moved down the road a bit (guess it had been longer than we thought since we last came) so they now have their own private parking lot which is nice. Their selection of comics is colossal, the main reason we come back. Their game selection is also phenomenal and they even have a "game cage" for table top games to happen in store. Kids also have game and comic options as well as stuffed animals that are great for all ages. Staff is friendly, greeting us as we entered and various employees asking if we needed help with anything during our visit. We got what we wanted and continued our adventure. I'm glad we make FanFare a regular Kalamazoo stop and am already looking forward to coming back. read more

We were driving by and my son saw the giant action figures on the windows. I was forced to stop by. My sons both loved this place. There is so much so it can be a little overwhelming. We spend an hour in there. There was a section where kids could play games or trade cards. They had a lot of cute things for girls too. The selection was beyond great here. read more

This is a very large comics store and they have gaming stuff too. I took a bit to browse through the very discounted boxes and spotted something cool and interesting. I had no idea that there was a "The Prisoner" series of comics and so I got one of them. It's hard to say no to a 50 cent comic book that's in very good condition and already in the proper board and bag. Other comics on tables and on the walls and pretty much everywhere. Lots of them! How have I not reviewed Fanfare? Ok, so first off, they transferred my entire pull list from back home to their system with one email. The groovy thing about that is that they did not miss ANYTHING. Super amazing. Secondly, they always have a solid selection of...Funko Pops! They're in constant rotation. They even have pops that are vaulted (thank you all for having that Ric Flair pop!). Next, they have that beautiful membership program where you get a certain percentage off new comics. Where else do I go? Easy parking? Very chill vibes. A whopping selection of $1 comics? A solid amount back issues? I mean, there are so many places that I can pívot to. The employees are amazing and they even have excellent back issues. This is my favorite comic book store in Southwest Michigan. Their selection of games, alone, is impressive and worth the trip. They have a gaming area for Dungeons and Dragons, they participate in Free Comic Day. The staff is helpful and friendly. If you are looking for something, they will help you find it. If they don't have it, they will track it down for you. They have a decent selection of Funko if you collect those. They also have special items behind the glass case worth checking out. Action figures, baseball, football and Pokémon cards. Amazing statues of super hero's! They have game nights too, you can bring your cards and whatever you need to play ! This place is a go-to every time I'm visiting the area. There is a great selection of board games, Funko items, and of course, loads of comics. It's fun looking at all of the autographed pictures on the wall and I'm also a fan of the fact that the staff is super friendly and talks to you like you're one of the gang. My nephew can't get enough of this place and loves talking to Mr. Bill about all things Marvel. Fanfare is definitely at the top of my list of favorite comic shops. Both my husband and I have been going here for years. He's been going longer because he lived in Portage for longer than I have. However, I have been to my fair share of comic book stores and theirs is one of the largest, well lit and clean. They dont just sell comics either. I come from Orlando, and we have no shortage of incredible comic shops - A Comic Shop, Gods & Monsters, Colosseum of Comics. Moving to Portage, I wasn't expecting to find a shop that stands shoulder to shoulder with those shops. I first visited Fanfare about 7 years ago, and I came back regularly every summer until we decided to take the plunge and move up here last year. And every time, they never lacked for spectacle and things to look at. More importantly, each person behind the counter knew their product well, and were great to talk to, and incredibly helpful. Each time I've shopped there, I've either found exactly what I was looking for, or was able to order it, have it delivered to the store, and be contacted immediately upon it's arrival. The selection is fantastic, the cleanliness is a welcome change from many comic shops, and the people are great. Best comic shop in Michigan, without question. read more

About the only thing keeping me from giving this place five stars is the prices they want for thier cold drinks. Other than that, well, the store is amazing. It's clean, it's bright, and you have people at the counter who don't really match the whole "Simpsons comic book guy" stereotype. They're friendly, willing to help you out, and always there. For being a game store, they sure do embrace gaming! It seems like every night, there's another game playing- Magic, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and even D&D and Pathfinder Organized Play on weekends. They have a nice selection of new and old games, new and old sports stuff, and pretty much is a nice place to just come in and nerd out if need be. If you need to feed, there's a Lee's Chicken out in the parking lot, or a Subway across the street. All in all, it's a really nice place to go and browse/play/talk. read more

From comic books galore, to trading cards, to a place where board games can be played by scores of people; this would be your place. The abundance of items for sale, coupled with the fact that the staff is extremely knowledgeable and kind to the unknowing patron looking for that certain item, makes this a 5-star location. I simply don't know how they can carry so much "stuff" and still know where every item is...like the mega-store for all things geek or hobby seeker. Nerdlandia! Great spots for trading card game tournaments (oh the hours I whiled away here playing Lord of the Rings and Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards back in the day). Great spot to pick up board and card games ... the staff is friendly and offers great advice. Would love to see them carry more minifigs for D&D. Fanfare is a local treasure, and I place I spend a considerable amount of my free shopping time. They have a vast array of comics, action figures, board and card games, you name it they have it. Their staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, and willing to go the extra mile for you in helping you locate something or special order something for you. The only reason this isn't a hands-down 5 star rating is due to their board game prices. As an avid board gamer, I would love nothing more than to shop local for my board games, and support local business. However, their prices are very high on board games, and sometimes even higher than MSRP. I'm all for supporting local business, and I'll even continue to buy smaller games and expansions here, but I simply cannot afford to spend what they're asking on larger titles, and unfortunately will have to buy those online. read more

Pros: _great_ selection of comic books, board games, card games, collectibles, and necessary accoutrements. Decent selection of Roleplaying books and used videogame stuff. Knowledgable staff, often friendly. great gaming scene and space. Easy to find games of magic, Netrunner, heroclix, other lcgs and ccgs, or even straight up board games. Also plenty of room if you wanted to play anything else (short of full-table wargaming). good loyalty program for comics, cheap to join and saves you good money if you have even one or two draws (which they are reliable and friendly about) very family friendly. Well lit, decorations are not _overly_ violent or sexual, and the staff will gently ask you not to curse in the gaming area (and will outright kick out the true assholes) Cons: though I feel they are endeavoring to combat this, they are still in many ways and old-school store and can this be a little hostile to lady gamers/comic fans. If you've got pretty thick skin fanfare is a pretty cool place, but if other comic shops have rubbed you the wrong way, fanfare doesn't break that mold a whole lot. Not bad enough to dock a star, but worth noting. read more

As I am spending or trying to spend my hard earned money, I find myself wondering where is the service in customer service. Well, I found it in Fanfare! My son frequents this store and I have to admit the service has been good. When I have called looking for a product they have always been courteous and helpful! When I have been in the store, and need help, which someone usually, always ask if i need assistance and they will take me to the product that I am looking for and make sure that I see the product and they even explain the product, which means a lot to Mom's that are trying to learn about what their son is wanting to collect! And when I thought it could not get any better! My daughter and myself where making a quick purchase at another store in the strip mall and told my son and my husband we would meet them at Fanfare in a few! Another day, my son, just wanted to browse the store. There was a big crowd of young boys out in front of the store waiting for rides and my son and husband somehow got in the store after it was closed. The staff let a few younger children wait inside for their rides to pick them up. We then entered the store a few minutes later. Even though they closed approximately 5-7minutes ago, the staff let my son ask questions about items in their store and they even joked around. They let my son take a few minutes to make a decision about which one item he was going to purcase with his money! He made his purchase and we left approximately 20 minutes after closing time. That is customer service in my eyes!! Kudos to Fanfare for knowing how to treat customers! Thank you for putting the SERVICE in customer service! I am happy to spend my hard earn money at this store! The store is bright and inviting, and I have never felt out of place as a woman (they've even had female staff throughout the years).
