Redid my review as I got a call back from Ryan. We have been using Barnhill Chimney for over 20 years for cleaning and repairs. They used to be very responsive and always did a good job. Now they have an answering service that takes their calls and no one calls you back. We have been trying to get Ryan to call us back for over 1 month now because the cleaner found a problem but couldn't quote or set up repair of a bent liner. Today I told the answering service I would call everyday until Ryan or someone calls me back, but considering looking for another company. This is an A+ company. I called to book an appointment to have the gas logs in my fireplace of my new (to me) home built in 1986 evaluated and repaired or replaced. The appointment was a month out because they had so much business. Spoiler alert: they're worth waiting for. Elliot showed up on time, with the right equipment, and cleanly got both sets of gas logs functioning. He was knowledgeable, courteous, and friendly. Sam, did a wonderul job inspecting our fireplace and chimney- he was fantastic. Then today, Jordan with his team were on time, neat and clean, hardworking, kind, personable and very knowledgeable with all they had to do with our chimney and actully putting the insert in. So I'm sorry to say this but I had the worst experience with Mr nunn. We were in the middle of purchasing our house when we had to get the chimney looked at. Was informed that we needed new refractory panels, 3 of 4. Repeatedly had my appointment rescheduled by Mr. Nunn, saying personal issues, and then he finally showed up, only brought . Said he didn't realize that he needed 3. After talking with him back and forth, he ended up stating that he would make the 3rd panel for free with installation due to the inconvenience and his personal issues getting in the way. We were so happy, thinking that things were being taken care of. But he never called, never told us a date and refused to answer multiple phone calls and text messages. We had a wood burning fireplace that we wanted to convert to gas. One call to Barnhill and Elliot came to the house and measured and explained our options. We contacted another company and told us to come see their showroom but did not offer to come to our home. Can't say enough good things about our gas coal installation from Barnhill! We use it almost every day. It even makes this snowy first day of spring feel warm and cozy. One of the best home purchases we've made. I wish we had done it much sooner. The fireplace in our older home needed some repair, which the folks at Barnhill easily fixed. Our fireplace is also extremely tiny, but they installed a set of gas coals that fit the small space (and is very appropriate for our historic house). The fire puts out enough hear to take the chill out of our living room, but it's not so hot that it is uncomfortable to sit near the fireplace. Inspection and cleaning service provided by Barnhill on 1/9/18 with an inspection report stating it's cleaned, inspected and safe to use. I used the fire place once before my townhouse caught on fire from the chimney on 2/4/18. Fire department stated that there were multiple cracks in the chimney that caused the fire. We had a gas leak with our gas fire logs. Lucas came out and identified the problem, which had to do with a faulty line connection. He put on a new connector piece and advised us to have a plumber come out and hook up the gas line to the new piece. The plumber hooked everything up and got the fireplace to light but we couldn't get the remote to work. I texted Lucas and he came back (same day, right away) and fixed the remote. This company came out to do a cleaning and inspection. They did a decent job of the cleaning but said that during the inspection they found several issues that needed to be repaired that would cost in excess of $6000.00, including an exterior waterproofing that was about $1100.00, and that we should not use our fireplace in its current condition. Needless to say, we got a second opinion from another chimney sweep and he found no issues, assured us that if it were his house that he would have no problem using the fireplace. He did however recommend the waterproofing at a much lower cost of $200.00. If you do decide to use Barnhill, I would highly recommend getting a second opinion of their estimates. Seems to me that they are out to take advantage of, and to gouge people. Update: After the owner read my review that was not very favorable, he gave me a call and admitted that some errors were made and that some more options should have been made available to me and that he would be speaking with his techs and using this as a training moment. He also did his best to make this right by offering to refund my money for the inspection and cleaning. So, I can't say that I am happy with the original service, but the owner made great strides to make it right and I appreciate that. read more

Beware - Barnhill is in the upcharge business. Two big problems - due to seemingly limited expertise of their estimators, they'll give you a kitchen sink estimate, covering every possible issue using highest priced materials. They can't tell exactly what is wrong so they'll sell every extra. Also Barnhill charges a large amount for estimates. Compared to other local chimney repair services, we found them SUPER FRIENDLY but way out of line in costs, plus they didn't instill confidence that they actually knew what they were doing. This company charges to give estimates which is crazy. The estimate they gave me was almost triple (no exaggeration) the contractor I ended up using for essentially the same repair. The other contractor did a fantastic job. If you decide to go with them make sure you get competitive quotes. Their prices are astronomical compared to other contractors. read more

Came out to give a quote. Service man was very nice and seemed knowledgeable. Told me he'd email me the quote. Also stated it was a safety issue with the current chimney. Then called about 20 minutes later and said they couldn't do the job and didn't know anyone who could??? Didn't charge me for the service and their communication was good. But to tell a homeowner they have a safety issue and then just say, "well, sorry, we can't do it and don't know anyone who can". Seems to be a problem there. read more

I would not recommend Barnhill to anyone. Wes came out, said we had 3rd degree Creosote buildup, charged me $300 & did not even do a good job. Sent me an estimate for $5,000 to remove the Creosote & told us we could even use our fireplace after that was done, would need to install a wood burning stove that was another $5,000. Had another Chimney sweep come out, he told us to use some of those Creosote sweeping logs & he would come in the spring & sweep the loose creosote off. He also said they didn't do a good job, should have been able to remove more while they were here. I think Barnhill is just trying to take advantage of people who might not know any better. Thinking about reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. Since posting this review, I had a call from Bryan Barnhill who is returning my check, sending out a product to help loosen the creosote & offered to come out himself to show us how to use it. He will send someone out in the Spring to take care of the problem. Mr. Barnhill was very nice & offered to do whatever it took to make us happy. Used this company several years ago. Then one year the same guy that had been coming for several years came & said he could not clean it because my flue liners had collapsed. He said he took a video & would send me a copy. It was all a fabrication. Had someone else check it. There was nothing wrong. That was more than 10 years ago & have used chimney every winter. Also Barnhill guy said he thought it would be about $10 K to repair. He was flat out trying to scam me. This company is NOT TO BE TRUSTED! After he said about 10K i felt like something was amiss. I had Barnhill out to my 200+ year old home to take a look at the chimney. Prior to June I had always used someone else for chimney cleaning. Even though I had always had the chimney cleaned and inspected every year (by someone other than Barnhill) it turns out things were a mess- the liner was installed incorrectly and needed to be completely redone. The cap was held on by one screw. Barnhill representative Lance Hosey showed me photos and explained in great detail what needed to be done. He was terrific. I scheduled the work and was delighted when Barnhill called a few days later to say they'd had a cancellation and could come out even earlier than scheduled to fix the chimney. Kyle Nunn and John Marcum spent two days getting things right and they could not have been more professional or pleasant. Our house is all electric and we needed another heat source so we went to Barnhill and bought the top of the line Pacific Energy wood burning insert for one of our fireplaces. They were backed up about a month and we had to for installations, which was fine, we had our chimney's cleaned while we waited. On the morning they were to install their installation tech called and at 7:30 a.m. and told me he was on the way and should be here in about 30 minutes, they did not show up until between 11:30 a.m. and noon. They were very rude, angry that we had dogs we in the backyard which is where they insisted on coming in rather than through the front door. They did a shabby job installing the insert, bot even putting it together right. It fell apart the first time we tried to use it, it was not level and they put no insulation around to keep out drafts. We called to have it fixed and they told us, he was their best installer and since we didn't want him back in our home, there must be a real problem so they would send the owner out with another tech to fix it and talk with us about the issue. We had to wait over a week with no heat for them to come fix it and then were told they were not sending the owner because they had a more important installation for him to attend. They sent one tech. He did what he could, he added insulation around the insert and put it together as best he could although it is still not right. He could not level the insert because, he said, it was too heavy for him to remove and in order to level it he would have to remove and reinstall. They never would install correctly to level it. The insert makes a horrible noise when the fan is on which may or may not be from the leveling issue. We used their services one last time for another chimney cleaning and scheduled to have a chimney cap made and installed. We paid the tech who came to sweep our chimney and then called the office to schedule having the cap installed. They could not get the scheduling straight and finally had to reschedule several times after calling us 8 times asking when we wanted it installed and wanting payment after we had already paid and had it scheduled. In the end, the cap was installed, but I definitely do not feel like the product and services we got from them was worth the 8K we paid. They are overpriced and their service is horrible you're betting off finding someone else even if it means you have to look in Lousiville. read more

First appointment received a call 5 minutes before my scheduled appointment. "We're late getting started this morning. We're going to be 45 minutes late." I rescheduled. Second appointment. received a call 10 minutes before my scheduled appointment. "Our van is in the shop and we can't pick it up for another 10 minutes but we'll be right there - will be 30 minutes late. (They didn't know that the van was in the shop when they called to confirm my appointment yesterday?) An hour later receive another call. We've run into traffic looks like it will probably be best to reschedule. Yeah right. Because I have several more hours to sit around and wait on you to NOT show up. read more
