The accompanying potato salad was light and vinegar/olive oil based rather than mayo based, which was a nice contrast to the rich brown butter sauce. Waiters were friendly and recommended their cider (specifically made for Barr) which reminded us of a sour + an orange wine. Spaeztle with chanterelle mushrooms was very savory, a little too rich for my liking but my partner loved it. Had a great dinner at Restaurant Barr. The place has a really cool vibe, warm, stylish, and very Scandinavian without trying too hard. The service was super friendly and attentive, which made the whole experience feel relaxed but still polished. Tried a few different dishes, and everything was clearly made with care and good ingredients. The beef tartar was fresh and flavorful, and the pickled mackerel with cherry tomatoes in vinaigrette was surprisingly light and zippy. The schnitzel was classic and comforting, done really well. The most unique dish was definitely the waffles with black roe and crème fraîche. Sounds a little strange, but it totally worked, salty, creamy, and a little sweet. A fun surprise. Only downside: it's definitely on the pricey side. Still, if you're looking for a gentle (and tasty) intro to Northern European food in a great setting, Barr is worth a visit. read more

As the Bear fans, since we couldn't dine at Noma, we had to have a meal at Barr! Our experience here was nothing short of perfect! The decor is very miniminalistic and Scandinavian and is right by the waterfront which was nice because we saw sunset while being seated indoors. We started with drinks my husband got an old fashioned which he liked. I got the salad and my husband got the crab appetizer - both just wow! The crab was full of flavors and the sauce it came with was just so ambrosial. We got the plaice for two and it was perfectly grilled - when it first arrived I thought there's no way we could finish the fish but in no time we finished it. For desserts we got the raspberry ice cream which was a nice end to our meal, a bit tarte but it was good. Most memorable meal in Copenhagen has to be Barr. The most conversational servers who were not only knowledgable but warm and friendly. Execution of dishes were also timely which we found to be rare when dining in restaurants in CPH. We had to try the pork snitzel which came with a fennel salad and browned butter. I can still remember the crunch of each bite. It was so so good! The lobster pancake is a must. Loved each and every morsel. The cabbage with two types of roe had a really fantastic light cream sauce. I thought the cabbage could be cooked slightly longer so it can be more tender as it was a struggle using a knife and fork to cut into smaller bites. The lingering bitterness of the cabbage and creamy roe sauce with an effervescent tang made it ever so enjoyable. There is no cocktail menu however if you ask, your server will share they do make the most common cocktails. The dishes we tried were all well balanced in flavors and I am glad it was our last meal before departing. KenScale: 8.25/10 Visit: February 2024 During our trip to Copenhagen in February this year, I wanted to make sure that my wife Jun and I do not get overwhelmed by too much fine dining, so we split our four nights in the city between two fine dining (Noma and Alchemist which I will review next) and two casual restaurants. One restaurant from the latter that I wanted to try also happened to be located in the former Noma space before it moved. Even the chef Thorsten Schmidt honed his skills at Noma under the famed René Redzepi. Unlike the more high-octane tour de force from Noma, Barr's direction is more approachable, inspired by and elevating comfort dishes from around the Northern Sea region, often quite successfully, as we had experienced for our dinner. One essential quality that we learned from restaurants in Copenhagen was a kitchen's relentless focus on the fresh ingredients. After taking a bite of raw langoustine at Barr, you will immediately notice it. We've had a fair share of lobster and langoustine dishes before, but the texture of Barr's langoustine was quite something else, and it certainly helped that the kitchen decided to add preserved tomato and curdled milk to further enhance the texture. The other starter we ordered, mushroom bouillon, was also fantastic, with its aromatic broth and lightly grilled mushroom quite ideal for a chilly winter night in Copenhagen. When we were discussing what to order for main dish, we couldn't help but notice that literally every table around us was ordering the gigantic fried porkchop for two so we jumped on the bandwagon. We were very glad we did, as the breaded aged pork was one of the best dishes we had eaten in Copenhagen; the meat's texture was more or less perfect and the dill stewed potatoes on the side was a worthy sidekick. We finished our meal with a delightful but not overly sweet dessert of apple and quince accompanied by kefir ice cream and rosemary caramel. The restaurant has a decent-sized dining room that was fairly packed during our meal; if you end up not getting a reservation in advance, you can also try the bar area on the right after the entrance. While Barr prides itself in having a great beer list, it also has a pretty extensive list of carefully sourced wines for wine drinkers like us, with bottles at different price points and emphasizing compatibility with the food. The aesthetics of quintessential Scandinavian minimalism oozes throughout the dining space with oak interiors. If you are in need of a more classic Danish dining experience in Copenhagen, it will be fairly hard to beat what Barr has to offer. read more

This was probably my favorite meal in Copenhagen! We had a reservation for 2 at 6:30 on a Tuesday night although the restaurant was not busy and we probably could have gone without. To drink I got the cherry sour which was to die for. To eat we started with bread, the beet salad, trout, and beef tartar. The beef tartar is some of the best I've ever had with a wonderful rye crisp that really made the dish stand out for me. I think next time I could go without the trout. As our main we split the cod and thrice-fried potatoes. The cod comes with a brown butter sauce that is exquisite. The service was attentive but not in your face. The only reason I reserved this spot was the proximity to Noma - opened by their alumni. Solid good food - expect to spend about $125USD incl drinks and tip. They also charge 35dkk ~$5USD for EACH bottle of filtered flat/sparkling. Self-service: coat check, water and utensils. Beautiful salad - pickled strawberries and beautiful greens/herbs. Roasted bone marrow, accoutrements were better than the marrow and the crisp bread way too thin to hold anything. Ask about the beers on tap, I picked a double ipa that was made specifically for Barr - light and refreshing. The mains were just ok, weinerschnitzel and halibut for two. Definitely do the beer ice cream, small portion (don't share!) but packs a punch. Service from our main server was very cold, I don't usually notice this but seriously no smile at all while we engaged her and she was completely different to the table behind us. Hard to ignore the stark difference of interaction. If it ended at her, this would have been a 3 star review. But! The person who seated us, brougbt us our mains AND overheard me say I had 1% left on my phone - without any prompting, whisked a battery pack over. Won my heart. And it's not a quiet restaurant - so the attentiveness he gave was truly amazing! I don't completely understand how 'booked' everything gets bc the dining room/bar was only 1/3 full the entire time we were there. The setting at Restaurant Barr is magnificent. Housed in the old Noma location, the atmosphere carries both history and character, making it a special place to dine. The food was very good, well-prepared, and reflective of the high standards you expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Unfortunately, the service did not match the setting or the food. Throughout the evening, no one checked in to ask how things were. My wife ordered a cocktail she did not enjoy, and it sat untouched for over an hour. Had anyone come by, she would have ordered another, which would have enhanced our experience and increased the restaurant's revenue. Every engagement, whether for drinks, food, or simple follow-up, all had to be initiated by us. To make matters worse, when we left a tip that was generous by Danish standards, the waitress gave us a dismissive look. It was an unfortunate end to a disappointing level of service, particularly at a restaurant positioned at this level. This was hands down the worst dining experience I have ever had. The waiter took our order a few minutes after we sat down. 40 minutes later no food had come. We asked another waiter what was going on. She came back a few minutes later saying that the first waiter had forgotten to put our order into the kitchen. He stood over my wife, started touching her shoulder whilst talking to her and asked her why she had told the other waiter that he forgot to put our order in! He then became very aggressive and started screaming at my wife in front of the whole restaurant. I was about to lose it but instead went very calmly to the front desk to ask who was in charge. We were told there was no manager working and then a man appeared from the kitchen. When I told him what had happened and that I couldn't believe this waiter had screamed at my wife this man then also got very aggressive and started screaming and swearing at me. I was absolutely dumfounded. All I can assume is that maybe they were on drugs? I collected my wife from the table (who was in tears by this point) and we walked out of the restaurant and left. I have never in my whole life been treated like this before and experienced such aggression and rudeness to the point that I started to fear for my and my wife's safety. One of the first restaurants I pre-booked before my Copenhagen trip in December as I was excited to try, for a solo dinner. Food was excellent- opted for Chef's choice, and every dish came out superb. Even their simple gin and tonic (with their housemade gin) was a tasty delight. However, service was...spotty. Honestly it would have brought this review to 3 stars but I'll keep it at 4 based on purely the food experience. The host stand that night made me a little uncomfortable with a slight tinge of attitude from the second they greeted me upon arrival...and made me repeat things I said from me stating my reservation to later on (when I asked for the bill), making me repeat again in a way that felt a touch condescending...as if they were being subtle about it but they knew what they were doing. It was hard to explain but I've encountered energy like that before and my sense are usually correct. My server (younger server, fairly new, with glasses) was so engaging and attentive...at first. At the conclusion of my meal, I timed it and she had deserted my section for 25+ minutes. I tried asking another server for assistance. They nodded...then never came back. Ultimately (as I was in a rush to a cocktails reservation after dinner) I had to go to the host stand myself, where I was met with the aforementioned tinge of attitude. Not only that, but they couldn't locate my coat which made me nervous. Only after she and I thumbed through every single coat and every single closet did we find it. Locking back now, I kind of wonder if she did that on purpose, to delay me further. Otherwise, are they usually this organized given it's the dead of winter and they must have a system for all the coats they take, right? Hmm. Oh well, may not have been the most premium experience from a service standpoint but at least I got a solid dinner out of this. Barr is the closest I'll get to dining at NOMA as it used to be located here. We came here for lunch, which is offered Friday-Sunday. The menu mostly consisted of smorrebrod- open faced sandwiches. As a starter, we had the grilled romaine with langoustine tartare. I found a small bug on the side of the dish... mmm extra protein. :/ My main course was the oyster mushroom schnitzel. It is served with a brown butter sauce that I used sparingly as it was oily. I ended with a rhubarb dessert with sour cream sorbet that I wished there was more of. Perspective is everything. On one hand, paying $45+ for a schnitzel is outrageous. However, $45+ for the best schnitzel of your life AND from the same group as uber expensive Noma, Barr is a great dinner option. Here's my experience when my friend and I made a reservation in October 2021: 1) Experience: Compared to many other restaurants in the city, Barr provided one of the best and most efficient customer service experiences. We were greeted right when we walked in and taken to our table straight away (even having arrived five minutes early). We were given water right away and walked through the menu. After we decided on our order, our friendly serve returned. Food came out perfectly timed and pretty fast too. We didn't have to wait long for our check. Such a pleasant experience. 2) Food: The menu is not as large as you'd think, but still gives a wide range of options. We ordered the schnitzel and wow- best I've had in my life. It comes with mushrooms on top and a bowl of caper butter sauce and a bowl of lingonberries. For dessert, we ordered the fried cheese with ghostberries and the blackberries with ice cream with oak leaf oil. Both were good, but the blackberries with the oak leaf oil was a genius combination. 3) Design: The restaurant is decorated with a wood theme and very inviting and warm. It's a stunning space! I had a very mixed experience at Barr. On the plus side the ambiance is excellent, and everyone who worked there was very kind and eager to talk about the food and their recommendations for both food and drink. But on the negative side, I was very disappointed in a lot of the things my wife and I ordered. The carrots we got were rock hard; the schnitzel I ordered was extremely salty; and the whiskey sour was off on its ratio of lemon juice to simple syrup. (Fortunately, the Aquavit sour was delicious.). When we politely raised our concerns about the food and drink, the waiters were very accommodating. But it was nonetheless disappointing to go to such a highly rated restaurant and get so many things that were not well-prepared. read more

The food was super inventive and copious. Every course somehow incorporated flowers! We got the set menu and could not finish it. The main (3rd course) was huge. We had the cod and the chicken; both came with sides--lovely salad and leeks in a creamy sauce. We almost had no room for dessert, but it was so delicious we didn't leave a drop on our plates. They called it a rhubarb parfait but it was more of a frozen panna cotta ringed in lightly cooked and sweetened bits of flowers and rhubarb. The standout for me was the "cucumber" salad, which was a work of art and liked more like a floral arrangement than a salad. Another sister restaurant of noma. This one actually sits in the location of the original noma before they moved. I came here for lunch and there's nothing bad that I can say about it. The food here isn't cheap but that's pretty much all of Copenhagen dining. It's a casual spot so don't worry about dressing up. They love rye bread in Copenhagen so you can pretty much expect that at any place you dine. Barr serves their bread with seasoned lardo. Can't complain. We ordered the crab and waffles, beef tartare, and cod tail for two. Everything was on point. The waffles went surprisingly well with the crab. I definitely recommend it. The space itself is beautiful with a lot of natural light coming from the canals. The staff was friendly and funny as well. My only off comment is that they serve their beers like wine. Meaning, they charge you the price of a full point but only give you about a 5oz pour. Anyway, come experience noma without the drama, go to Barr. read more

This is a review for their bar. As others have said, great place for dinner, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Great steak tartare. Refer to other dinner reviews. While there for dinner, I noticed their beautiful bar space with many taps and their lengthy beer list and thought it would be nice to come back for a beer another day. We arrived around 9 on a Wednesday (they close at 11) and were told we could not have dinner. I said that's alright, we we were actually hoping to have a drink at the bar and they gestured us towards the completely empty bar. We then sat for fifteen minutes without any acknowledgement from the staff. We were about to leave when a group of six came in and joined us at the bar. I thought we might at least be able to place an order now that more people arrived but after waiting five minutes no one ever came! They advertise their beer bar but I cannot recommend it as a place for a drink. read more

Copenhagen has terrific food as you probably know. From the cheap (Polsen) to the very expensive (Noma) and Barr manages to deliver top notch food with prices just below the top prices of other restaurants. The restaurant is in the old Noma space right on the canal with incredible views of the city center. We had a terrific sunset that graced our presence as we were dining. The restaurant is quintessential Scandinavian with light wood and bare walls. We opted not to go with the tasting menu as our eyes always turn out bigger than our stomachs. We had the bone marrow and the caviar with dill. They were both incredible and beautifully plated. The marrow was huge and incredible. Make sure you get more bread to eat it with, if you already devoured the first bread. But the caviar was the standout. It was like a layered dip goodness. Like if the King had a Super Bowl party, this would be one of the dishes served. The service was wonderful and helpful. We had an Irish waiter who was wonderfully chatty and helpful in making decisions. I've noticed that in Copenhagen, staff gives you space, which can also be seen as inattentive if you're used to a different way. I think it's just about understanding the vibe of this city. Would totally return. I don't think you need to get the pairing, as the starters have so much good stuff that you might want to simply have a few of those instead. I had the privilege of dining at Noma right before they closed their original location. I loved the wooden beams and cozy ambiance in the restaurant and wondered who would occupy the newly vacant space. Enter Barr: a more casual take on new nordic cuisine opened by former Noma chef Thorsten Schmidt. Barr focuses on the food of the Nordic Sea with a fresh spin on regional dishes. I recently received a gift card for Barr and we decided to use it during the holidays when they have a special Christmas menu. We opted for the 4-course menu (DKK 600/person) and beer pairing (DKK 250/person). The four courses consisted of: Complimentary homemade whole grain bread and Danish style rye with homemade butter and herb lard Dill marinated salmon with mustard sauce and pears paired with a California pilsner Glazed spareribs with pine and lingonberries paired with a Belgian pale ale Roasted duck with kale, truffle, and caramelized potatoes paired with a Belgian sour Gingerbread ice cream sandwich with cream and cherry compote paired with a dark beer brewed by Belgian monks It was very fun to experience their take on classic Danish Christmas dishes. We loved everything but my favorite course was definitely the duck with caramelized potatoes and fermented veggies. By the time I found out about Noma, it was too late, but I was told about Barr, which a Noma chef opened and I was sold. Not to mention, it was cheaper but for the same quality. When we walked in, I was impressed by the fresh, modern, and clean Scandinavian design. We were greeted and they asked if we wanted to put our coats in the closet. This saved the hassle of putting it I don't even know where since we were sitting on stools. We decided to split the brussel sprouts, rhubarb, and the cod meant for 2 people. It came with a few pieces of bread with this amazing pork lard with onion. The brussels and rhubarb were extremely fresh and perfectly cooked. But the star of the show was definitely the cod! It was smoked, silkey, buttery, and completely tender and came with this amazing dipping sauce I couldn't stop pouring over my fish.
