I have to say - pleasantly surprised. Having just moved from Bethesda back to DC, I was looking for a store nearby to walk to. The selection is pretty vast in spirits and wine (carried my favorite Monkey 47 gin as well as Caymus) and prices were GREAT. I mean - I couldn't believe my eyes. Growing up in VA, buying wine was an experience in a beautiful store with cheese and charcuterie & music playing in the background. I had a rude awakening when I moved to Bethesda and had to experience buying wine only in liquor stores or select wine stores that had pitiful selections. Which then forced me back over the bridge or to another store in DC. Now that I've moved back to DC, I'm glad to have this store around the corner to fully stock me. They even carry Fever Tree tonics and club soda. Still no ambience but I'll get used to it. P.S. I did pop into one closer to my house and didn't have the same selections. read more

I'll be honest, I haven't been to a ton of liquor stores in DC yet since I moved from Arlington in February... there's a Safeway across the street from me with beer and wine, and that's mostly sufficed so far. So I don't know if it's the norm in DC for liquor stores to have all the hard liquor behind the register where you literally can't see or read any of the labels. If this is normal in DC, fine, but either way, it was rough. I came here on election night because vodka was necessary. I was hoping for some serious sugary, college hangover material - Cinnabon Pinnacle specifically - but they didn't have it, so I settled for vanilla Ciroc. I appreciated that they sold some mixers here too. Overall sufficient, I guess. read more

One of my new recession rules is, "If I'm going to buy a drink, it's going to be by the bottle and it's going to be good, dammit." Barrel House liquors has a fantastic selection, particularly of wine. I was well impressed that they even had a fairly extensive collection of rieslings, which I figured would be hard to find (maybe not, now that I think about it.) The liquor selection seems quite keen as well. Worth noting are the sizes! Comme, I love Modern Liquors, but they lack smaller bottles of booze. Barrel House keeps a regular Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Baby Bear circuit. And they have the cutest tiny bottles!!! Imagine a tiny little Bacardi Superior. Just so damn cute, and it's only $1! Service was a bit iffy, though. I knew what I was looking for, so I didn't have to ask, so I don't know about the staff's knowledge. I did, however, get hit on by the cashier guy, who started speaking Amharic to me when I walked up to the register. I looked at him like he'd grown another nose and he said, "You're not Eithiopian?" "No," I said. "Oh," he said, "you look Eithiopian." "I get that a lot." "If you're not Eithiopian, where are you from?" "New Jersey." "Oh, New Jersey?" "Yes, New Jersey." Not wanting to repeat the words "New Jersey" again, I said "thanks," and fled. Barrel House: A Barrel O' Booze and Fun. read more

These reviews are too funny. The undertones are so wine snobbery suburbia. Telling us about your FABULOUS apartment and your uncomfort with foreign languages says it all... Anyway, it's a down to earth, no frills liquor store people...liquor, booze, beer etc. If you want to impress your fabulous frat boys with your "high end" booze then shop at a high end booze boutique. Otherwise pop in grab your six pack and down them. The staff is very helpful, very friendly and prices are right on with similar liquor stores. This institution has been around FAR longer than any of the uppidy-nosed snobs reviewing it and will be around long after they've transplanted to suburbia. Cheers to Barrel House !! read more

I just moved into a new apartment which is straight up in the hood in NW on NY Ave. Despite the sketchy location it's a bitchin apartment--massive 2bd/2bath, with 2 fireplaces, exposed brick, a kick ass kitchen that I can throw down in, amongst other things. In order to properly introduce the apartment to our circle, we decide to throw a kegger/pizza party. I love to party plan so I knew it would be up to me to make sure all provisions were taken care of. Having never bought a keg and not touching beer since my second year of college, I was kind of stumped. After a quick google search, I found Barrel House and figured: right up the street from my office? fairly close to the apt?? we have a winner! Umm, yea, big mistake. My issues with this establishment: 1. The service was god-awful. I understand I'm at a liquor joint, but holy crap I ordered this keg 5 days ago, I said I was going to pick it up at 4:30pm, no one is in there, why in the hell is it taking 15 min to bring the damn thing out to me?! Top that off with the fact the staff was totally awkward and rude. 2. We get the keg and tap and the bucket and some ice all set up in the apartment, and of course can't tap the keg. We have our expert ex-frat boy get it all set up, but there's zero pressure so we are separated from the equivalent of 72 cups of beer by 2/3 an inch of metal and only 45min until people start showing up. Cynthia = not amused. 3. The boys call Barrel House, who insist that the problem is user error, that they ALWAYS test the taps before hand. So after a few more attempts the boys take the keg and the tap back to Barrel House. "Oh, really? You test the tap before you hand them off to your unsuspecting patrons? Bullshite!!" Back in the store the tap didn't work, so clearly these people were slacking not only on giving me my product in a timely fashion, but actually testing it out to ensure that the product actually worked. That pissed me off. Luckily, the boys got it back and set it up so our kegger/pizza party went off without a hitch. And despite Mr. Cook insisting no one in their right mind who had been out of college for 2 or more years would attempt a keg stand, we had several people prop themselves up on our pony keg and chug away. (ahem...including the skeptical Mr. Cook himself) Too bad for Barrel House I will never go there again. read more

Came in during New Years Eve for last minute alcohol run for a party and I was shocked at their low prices! They have a huge selections of wine, hard liquor, and mixers. I wish all the hard liquor wasn't behind the register but at least the whole place isn't behind plexiglass like other locations. Nonetheless, staff were very friendly and helped me find all the ingredients for my NYE cocktails. Cheers to 2018. read more

Ah! So refreshingly cheap. Yes, I follow my neighborhood liquor store on Facebook. No, my neighborhood liquor store isn't by any stretch of the imagination actually in my neighborhood. Some say their prices are low because the tenants managed to secure a long-term fixed-rate lease ages ago, a situation that allowed the owners to operate their business in a bubble unshaped by DC's otherwise inflated alcohol prices. Others say they made a pact with the Devil. Whatever the cause of their relatively low prices--that being lower than any other grocer or liqour store I've stumbled upon in the city's limits, and competitive against even Northern Virginia's low price-point--the point is moot. Barrel House liquors is destination when it comes to beer runs, convienence be damned. read more

Always on the lookout for good deals on quality wines and top-shelf spirits, Barrel House Liquors was an obvious stop, with its distinctive storefront, while walking down 14th St. Barrel House has a decent selection of quality hooch for your liquor needs. Its wine selection, however, is unremarkable. Prices are competitive, beating or at least equal to prices found on various brands at other retailers in the District. I'd rate Barrel House in the upper half of liquor stores in the District for spirits, but squarely in the middle for wines. Worth a return trip the next time I'm in the market for some good small-batch bourbon or single-malt scotch. read more

Welcome to 5 star town Barrel House. I love this place even though nobody who works here understands a single word I say to them. Their staff is so odd and lovable. The only downside, no 12 packs of Coke for mixed drinks. I think the last time I asked about them, the gentleman behind the counter was going to actually make me a 12 pack out of individual cans in the cooler. It's this kind of random outside the box thinking that I appreciate. You're my go to liquor store from now on in the 'hood. See you once a week until I move out of DC. read more

What's not to love about a liquor store shaped like a barrel? Given the choice to shop at a cool looking liquor store or a very basic looking liquor store, I'll let the packaging influence me every time! Once you get inside, Barrel House is pretty much just like everywhere else. Lots of liquor specials, half-decent beer selection, half-decent wine selection, regular sampling. It's not my favorite place to buy wine or beer in the neighborhood, but for booze, I'm always happy to frequent this place! read more

I really love Barrel House Liquors. not only are they close to my apartment (personally convenient), I have always had EXCELLENT service. I'm surprised that people report poor service here, because I have had quite the opposite experience. The folks at Barrel House have always been really friendly and helpful. The prices are just fine; maybe not super cheap, but they are probably the most competitive in the area. However, for me, it is really the service that I appreciate here -- they've got me as a customer for the remainder of my time in the neighborhood. read more

Nice selection of tequila and scotch, and some decent liquor prices. Svedka is still a steal here. They have cold cases of beer in the back, and bring them out when asked. And.....for any upstate NYers, they sell Labatt Blue....but only in six packs, for an inflated price....but still good when you need that sweet Labatt deliciousness. read more

I fell in love with this place when I walked in and they had Monkey Bay sauvignon blanc on sale for $8.99. They have a large selection of pretty well-priced wines and also a decent selection of liquors. Many of them cost less than they do here at home in North Carolina, but then we have outrageous state taxes. They also have mixers, so it's a good one-stop shop for the alcoholic in you. It's in walking distance to pretty much any Logan Circle, Thomas Circle, or Dupont Circle hotel, so you can get more bang for your liquor buck than you can in the hotel bar. (Plus, the front entrance looks like a barrel! What more did you want?) read more

The better choice if you are deciding between here and "Best of Liquor" (which I would call worst of liquor). This place has a much better selection and the prices are much more reasonable. Yes, you are still paying a premium because you are buying booze in downtown DC but it is not as bad as other places. They have a great selection of liquor, including rare bourbons and scotches, and always have what you are looking for. They also have a pretty decent wine selection considering they are not a wine shop. They keep cold cases of beer so you can grab and start the party right away, and they also have kegs on demand, at a good price. If you live in Logan Circle, skip best in liquor and come here instead you will save money and have a better selection!! read more

This place is CHEAP!! and open late. They have a good selection of beer and wine but they sell Grey Goose for cheap! Used to be 27.99 for a 750mL but I think last time I checked it was 28.99. Parking lot in the back! AND THEY DELIVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Prices are not very good, I have found the same wine / beer in other stores for much better price, even Whole Foods has the same wine cheaper , also at Barrel House they don't know anything about liqueur or wine. They are not customer friendly, after buying a couple of wines there I asked for two dollars in coins for the meter and they said they would give only one dollar not two when I could clearly see many rolls of quarters right in front of them. They have a good selection and they are open late but this place is not cheap, I won't go there again. Cheers!!! read more

Hello! Barrel House Liquors' most loyal patron, at your service. I've passed this place for years and only when I moved down the street did I begin to really frequent this establishment. Every time I enter I yell, "HI FRIENDS! I'M BACKKKK" and proceed to get an INCREDIBLY well-priced bottle of Malbec. You can't beat the prices here anywhere. Mark. my. words. The service is always nice and friendly and they tolerate my annoying butt. That's all I need! read more

I cannot complain about the service here like others have, it's always been stellar when I've walked in the store. That said, I've not ordered a keg or tried to purchase high-end liquor here. When it comes to wine I tend to go to the nearby Whole Foods on P St. so I won't comment on that; the thing that keeps me coming back, aside from the beer, is that they are always willing to go and check in the back for anything that initially appears out of stock. The prices are more than reasonable and I can always count on having a nice, cold beer within minutes of my purchase since they keep a solid selection in refrigerators in the back. For craft beer and wine, Whole Foods on P St. is the best bet. For solid beer, solid prices, and solid service, the Barrel is hard to beat. read more

Beware. I used my Apple Pay at this location, which successfully deducted money from my account but the cashier said it hadn't. I showed him my phone which showed the money was deducted. He didn't care. So I had to use a credit card to pay for the items. Long story short, they got paid twice. The manager said it's between me and the bank and wouldn't even check to see if they got paid. Seems like a scam to me. So now I'm two months in to a disputed that the store could have refunded me in minutes. read more

Unintelligent, incompetent, and idiotic are the only words to describe the morons running this dump. Barrel House Liquors is by far the worst place to purchase kegs in Washington D.C. I realize that there are limited options in the city, but for anyone reading this, I strongly recommend driving out to Virginia if you're having a big event that would require a 1/4 or 1/2 keg. You'll save money on the beer and taxes, and will have a much better experience overall. Last weekend for Halloween I reserved a 1/4 keg and proceeded to transport the beer from the liquor store to my apartment. I quickly realized once I returned home that the tap was faulty. People were planning on arriving within the hour, so I rushed back to Barrel House and began to explain my situation. As this was happening, I realized that several other customers were complaining about the same exact issue. I asked management for a new tap, but they refused to give it to me or do anything to help. They began to argue, claiming it was my fault I didn't know how to operate a tap properly. At that point I lost all respect for the employees and the business itself. I'm no brew master, but I've tapped dozens of kegs throughout the years, so being told I was the one causing the problem, when others apparently were experiencing the exact same issue, was pretty insulting. Any manager with half a brain in his/her head would have immediately apologized for the inconvenience and done something to remedy the situation. I will never step foot inside this place again, and would love nothing more than to see this place go under. Very rarely do I give such negative reviews on Yelp, but I honestly can't think of a business that is more deserving of a one-star rating. read more

Recommended for their selection of single malt scotch. Any place that sells 18 year Caol Ila is a friend of mine.

Slightly over-priced, by DC standards (and downright exhorbitant by MD standards) with a lousy selection. Mostly rail level stuff like Beam, flavored vodkas, and bad fruity creations. Beer selection is nothing special and the folks who work there, while friendly, don't know jack about booze. read more

Horrible service, horrible experience, DO NOT BUY KEGS HERE. Do NOT buy kegs from this place! I purchased a keg of yuengling here for a house party and paid the 90.00 deposit on the tap and shell. I was given keg, shell and tap and told the 90 charge would be taken off my card when I returned kegs. NOPE. When I returned 2 weeks later with goods in hand, the manager, who I could barely understand, informed me I could not get my deposit back as it had been too long, the policy was 1 week only. I had never been informed of such a policy nor was it on my receipt. They took back the shell and tap then offered me 60 dollars back instead, I refused and took up the matter with my company, who refunded the amount initially. Shady shady shady developing world business practices right here in the heart of DC. Not coming back. read more

Sure, Barrel House has one of the better selections of liquors in the downtown/Dupont/Shaw areas, but at what price comes that selection, I ask? The good side is the wide selection, wide enough for any moderately stocked home bar. You won't find any fine or specialty ingredients there (like french-made Creme de Framboise, or Allspice Dram, etc.), but you will find all of the basics, including every available flavor of DeKuyper schnapps, with such perennial favorites as Pucker Up and RazzMaTazz. So, its good in a pinch if you're looking to make some basic cocktails. However, the service is...challenged, to put it nicely. No one who works there seems to be even moderately fluent in English, and on top of it, are unfamiliar with alcohol. I mean, even if English isn't your first language, if you work in a liquor store, won't you learn the difference between orange curacao, triple sec, and creme de cacao? You would think yes, but in the case of Barrel House, it is a resounding "no!" I exaggerate not, but not ONCE in the 25 or so times I have been in that store, have the guys behind the counter been able to pick up the right bottle of liquor for me, even when I'm pointing directly at it and saying the name very clearly. Not once. There is inevitably an awkward dance across the shelves as they pick up and put down several different bottles, until I, leaning over the counter, nearly touch the one I want. My boyfriend, upon picking up beer, has experienced the same problem on every occasion he has went there. So yeah, go if you're in need, but be prepared for some serious annoyance. read more

Maybe I am biased because this place is literally in my backyard but I always found the staff here to be friendly and the prices are decent. Granted, they don't know a ton about liquor -- it's more of a point-and-buy/self-select kind of place. Sometimes I find good deals on wines that are decent (3/$20). It has a parking lot, always seems to be open late and is now open on Sundays! read more

This is not your typical DC corner liquor store. The wine selection here is diverse and well priced. It keeps me walking past Traders every time. I can find domestics, delicious South American reds, and even affordable French bottles. The secret is to go straight to their 3 for $19.99 rack. I found a delicious French rose there, a full-bodied Argentina Malbec, and a nice California Pinot Noir. And if you need help, just ask the friendly cashier who always seems to help me narrow down my picks. It's my new find on 14th!!! read more

The selection at Barrel House Liquors is good. That's the only good thing I can say about a place that made it very clear they didn't want my money. I went in to purchase two rather high end bottles of liquor because I knew they carried both and they aren't too far from my house. However, with 5 employees behind the counter (one of whom looked like a manager/owner) only 2 were actually working while the others stood around and talked to each other. That would have been fine if there weren't lines at the counter but there were. I dutifully stood in line at the register waiting on the three people in front of me to be helped and when it was my turn, the cashier waved people he apparently knew over and waited on them instead of me. These people had come in after me so other than the fact that they apparently knew the employee why did they get service first? This incident made it clear to me that my money is not good enough for Barrel so I will be taking my high end liquor dollars else where. It's not as if there aren't plenty of options in this city and in that very neighborhood in fact. read more

I come here, like, every day. Sometimes more than once a day. They're in my speed dial. I once called at 10:00am to "just make sure you're open!" (They were). They know me by my first name, even when I stumble in wearing Gaga-sized sunglasses (on my 'incognito'/hungover days). I don't drive, but if you do, there's even a parking lot! They have a wide selection of everything you could want, and if you're anything like me, you'll get a nice, warm & fuzzy feeling when the door chimes upon your entrance through the giant wooden barrel facade. The ONLY reason I didn't give them five stars is because sometimes there's a tiny language barrier, like when I was trying to get prices for some top-shelf champagnes. In the end they took care of me but it was more frustrating than necessary for everyone involved when all I was really trying to do was take some Veuve to the face ASAP. Anyway, I love this place, so spend your money here! read more
