Compact corner store offering an overflowed of libations. The old school cat stocking was friendly in saying hello & asking if I needed any help. Told him no as I was just looking. He must have seen my internal wine drip as he gestured where the wine was displayed. The lady behind the counter was just as pleasant as she shared some tidbits for her 1st time customers. Prices seems competitive especially for the downtown aspect. I saw 2 different bottles of Malbec that was a couple dollars cheaper than my usual spot close to home. During my perusing of admiring the various packaging, I got educated by a Knob Creek vendor who was giving out samples. I declined, yet enjoyed Bourbon 101 & left with maple sugar on my mind. & for the holidays, if you purchase a bottle you can get it personalized. I was on the hunt for Blanton's. Living in VA, Blanton's is always in limited stock at the ABC store and honestly I think the ABC store clerks are tired of me calling every Wednesdayto check if it is in their shipment. $60 at ABC, $90 plus $10 tax here. I don't know anyone who comes to a liquor store for the ambience or concierge level customer service. You won't find sommeliers or even wine aficionados here because that generally adds to the bottom line "duh". If you want a solid selection and excellent prices this place crushes Va ABC prices as well as total wine or grocery stores. They have the good stuff. So if you want your mad dog 20-20 or Schlitz malt liquor you can find it here along with $10,000 single Malt scotches or $5,000 cognacs this is your place!! Bags will cost you a nickel and DC tax is 10% so add that to the total cost so you're not surprised by it. Finally be aware that they sell a lot of Lottery tickets here and when the jackpot gets high the lines may be annoyingly long so plan accordingly. This place generally is the same as internet prices and sometimes they're better. It's worth it if you know what you are buying ahead of time. read more

This is THE PLACE to get your beer and wine or liquor if you're staying at the Herrington Hotel, or any other close by. There is a HUGE selection of booze, beer and wine. At all price levels. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Don't pay the high price at the bar at the hotel, buy here and keep it In Your room. Unless you enjoy the bars and bar scene!! LOL read more

It's amazing to me that there are 1-star reviews due to the employees following *clap* the *clap* law *clap*. This place has been my spot for liquor in the DC area for years and the staff have only been warm and consistently reliable. I love this place! My go to liquor store in the district. Beats Virginia prices handily and the people are always friendly. They have a nice selection of wine and liquor for a small store! Love it when I work nearby so I can head over after work and stock up, as I plan to do today!! Update: right after I wrote my five star review, I went there for the first time in months. I have to say the quality has declined. They had less of a selection them before, and they had raised prices on a number of items. One item I had purchased before was in a bottle half the size, and they charged almost as much for it. Ridiculous. I'll be looking around for other stores. Nevertheless I left my rating at four stars, dropping it only one star, because I still got a couple good deals. read more

For the location, the wine prices are actually reasonable with decent selection of wine. Bought some burgundy white - $55 bucks, was pretty reasonable per wine searcher. Far Niente Char was $55, Nickel & Nickel Zin $45. At least they carry a decent selection of wine - which I appreciate that. read more

Surprisingly good store! They occasionally have massive sales. While it's clear to clever shoppers that every store is getting the same deal on cases of something, this store really slashes the bottom out of the sale. Example: recently Pimms No 1 has been on sale at pretty much every liquor store in the DC area. Most places discount from ~25 to about 15-17. Washington Wine and Spirits took it to $10 (!!). On top of the fire sales, they have excellent pricing on liquor (especially Scotch). I routinely pay $10-15 less here than anywhere else in the city. Selection is much better than expected, from unusual Japanese whiskies to small batch gins to ancient single malts to strange and enticing cordials. The service is prompt and friendly. I enjoy shopping there, as no one is pushy or surly, and you are left to your own devices. I have lived or worked in DC for the last six or seven years, and this place is my regular haunt now that I check first when looking for anything. I am not as knowledgeable about the wine side of things, but the liquor side is very good. read more

For a couple of years now I've stopped at Washington Wine & Liquor on my way home (via Metro) to buy my favorite Scotch whisky. After yesterday, I'll never set foot in that place again. After paying cash for my purchase, which came to a total of $29.89, I asked the cashier to double-bag my purchase, as the plastic bags used by the store are ultra-flimsy, and on more than one occasion I've had them break on the way more. The cashier told me another bag would be five cents extra, and repeated that when I asked, "Are you serious?" At that point I said that I wanted to return the whisky and get my money back. She did this in a huff, and really was quite snitty about the whole thing. My guess is that the bag costs the store about one-fifth of a penny, and for that the store lost a long-time customer (me) who probably spent more than a $1,000 a year there, exchanging convenience for inflated prices. read more

Store selection and prices are not bad. Employees can be hit or miss in their helpfulness. I went to make a purchase and wanted to use a gift card I had and then pay any remaining balance on my credit card, however, the clerk told me I had to pay any remaining balance by cash. That is unfathomable as virtually any store taking credit cards allows splitting of payment on 2 cards. If you're really looking for a solid selection of alcohol and excellent customer service you are better off going to Schneider's for a family run operation or to Total Wine for a national chain. read more

Best liquor store in the downtown area. Exceptional prices on scotches, with periodic sales at quick significant discounts on a few bottles. For instance, recently the superb Talisker Storm has been on sale -- priced at $35 or so when it was $50+ anywhere else. Most recently I saw it for $40 when the list price rose -- great price for a scotch of that quality. Other examples abound. It's fun to browse around and just see what's on sale, often they are hidden or underappreciated gems, and I both get to try a new scotch and save a few bucks. Also a strong selection of liqueurs for mixing, e.g., Cointreau, amaretto, Campari, etc. read more

The customer who complained about paying for a bag was just being petty and hate full. DC retailers have been obligated by law, since 2009, to charge a nickel for each bag. It's not at the discretion of the retailer. The city actually sends inspectors out to see if retailers are complying with the law. Retailers found in violation of this law are subject to be fined for each violation. Also, keep in mind, the retailer purchases the bag, charges you for it and then turns over $.04 to the city. We are wine people, so we searched for a good place to buy wine. We found it here. Good selection of wine, hitting all of the price ranges. I also eyed to whiskey selection and it looked pretty good, too. But we were here to buy wine. Found 2 bottles and we were on our way. They employees were nice. Considering the ideal location of this wine & liquor store, I'm amazed at their great prices. I just purchased a 2012 Ferrari- Carano Pinot Noir for $15 and it scores an 89 on Cellar Tracker. They also carry Shatter Grenache for $22 which is a solid value. The high end wines are also priced competively, don't pay any attention to those who say they're high-priced. I have an 800 bottle wine cellar and trust me these guys have good prices. And anyone who complains about service at a liquor store is a princess, these people are just fine. Until today, I was a regular customer at Washington Wine and Liquors on 12th & E Street, NW. I am a middle aged woman with one son, and I work for an Agency in the Penn Quarter Area. I have worked in this particular location for almost seven years. Just recently, I had decided to buy my spirits inside the District because at the time it was an option that became more convenient for me. Only a block from work the distance was ideal and the people were friendly. I was a regular. Today, as I attempted to purchase, as I had many times before I was rebuffed by a young cashier who made it a point not to validate the word of a stockroom employee who knows me regularly. As a business owner myself...I find it amazing that the first time I was ever asked to show my ID I was then told I could not purchase because I did not have my ID. I do not condone underaged drinking or identity theft but what seemed awkward, was the young employee's refusal to explain why she needed to see ID even though other employees were familiar with me as a customer and had seen my ID before...There are many other stores in DC that serve wine and Liquors and since it seems my loyalty as a customer is not important enough to Washington Wine and Liquors I will be definitely take my business elsewhere. It is important to note...I have not gotten this level of treatment anywhere else in the District! I am a real person, I know sometimes these ads are faked. If you work in DC's Penn Quarter Area and want to have your business be valued and appreciated, in closing, I would recommend you not take your business to Washington Wine and Liquors at 12th & E Northwest! read more
