This is a beautiful nursery hidden back from Santa Fe Dr. It has many winding paths leading to little hideaways of potted plants, gardening materials and many varieties of pots. There is a restroom on one of the paths. Staff assisted us in obtaining the biggest discount for us. How many store staff do you know who do that? Pretty incredible. Really a cool place. read more

This is the best nursery in North San Diego County. We recently moved into a new home and the builder's landscaping was poorly done and uninspiring which detracted from the home's curb appeal. We hired Samantha and her team to redo the front yard and back patio landscaping. They did a fantastic job. She met with us to discuss our vision, drew up a plan and gave a lot of really helpful design advice in terms of layout, plant and rock selection, etc. She supervised her team on site to ensure everything was implemented as designed. She and her team were great to work with. We will certainly use them on any future landscaping projects. The Barrels and Branches nursery itself is a wonderful place just to walk around. They have a lot of unique and interesting plants, pots, etc. It is a very peaceful and zen place to be. read more

Original review below, but I edited to five stars because the owner very understandingly reached out offering a refund and apology. I did end up being able to take four healthy cuttings from the damaged plant which are currently rooting in water and almost ready to transfer mediums. Thanks again for the great service! Great selection for most kinds of plants and landscaping, but avoid their houseplants section. I'm fairly experienced in caring for my own variety so I didn't expect to have many issues with the satin Pothos I found at Barrels & Branches. I unknowingly brought home the worst infestation of fungal gnats I'd ever seen- it looked like the soil was moving when they hatched after a few days. I eventually eradicated the gnats after disposing of the infected soil, delicately cleaning the roots, and systemically applying neem everywhere they had spread. This unfortunately wasn't enough, as they more recently got hit by what looks a bit like root rot. This is a bit confusing as I kept the soil on the drier side for this exact concern. I've ended up now trying to salvage some the plant by water propagating a few cuttings I took when parts of the plant started dying off. My sister had the exact same experience with a pilea microphylla, so I'm worried their house plant stock has a disease or parasitoid. read more

This is the most impressive nursery I've seen in San Diego County. Follow them on Instagram as well! It's a bit of an expert-level driving test to find this place and get into the parking lot without a mishap. Once settled, this nursery is much prettier than most with a lot of landscaping around meant to "inspire" visitors for what they may want to do with their gardens. I was able to find many special and rare succulent, agave, aloe, and cactus species here for my garden with prices that are pretty reasonable. The staff here are also super-friendly and knowledgable. Definitely ask questions if you have them. I will certainly be back! read more

Totally charming nursery with an emphasis on natives and succulents. The staff are friendly and welcoming (Miss Terry even took Bella around to find little baby froggies in the planters), the plants look lovingly arranged and cared for, and the prices are quite reasonable. Barrels and branches is a stunning nursery. It flows peacefully from one section to another, showcasing a wide variety of beautifully arranged plants. They also have a sweet indoor plant and gift shed, great pots, and super friendly and knowledgeable staff to top it all off. When I learned they did landscape design and consultations, I immediately hopped right on it. My new front yard is largely sloped and partially planted with randomness. I had no idea how to start or tie it all together. In comes Samatha, the owner of Barrels and Branches. She is fantastic, talented, and fun to work with. I never expected such dedication to my gardening cause. Round after round of cleanup and maintenance, Samatha patiently encourages me as DYI my new yard into submission. As seen by the nursery, her design is remarkable, and her advice is spot-on. She's helped me decide what to remove and relocate, taught me how to prune correctly and keep my existing plants healthy. Her suggestions on rock placement, gorgeous, low-maintenance plants, and overall design keep me inspired, working, and moving forward to planting day. I am so glad I found this wonderful nursery on Yelp! The nursery has a wide variety of pots and all the goodies to fill them. Reasonable prices for the plants. Price for pots is a bit high (not ridiculously so) but then again I am bargain hunter for pots and tend to save my money for the plants! A good amount of cactus and succulents that are not as common and that you are unlikely to find at a Big Box store. I came for the succulents, but was so pleasantly surprised with the CA native plants. Many many plants that I have never seen before. All the plants look so heathy and I am really looking forward to returning when I undertake some major gardening projects. Loved wandering the grounds and seeing butterflies, bees and lizards galore. The indoor plant section was also drool worthy and there were several gift ideas there. We drove from San Bernardino county and it was worth the hour plus drive. I would love to attend a class or event here when they are able to do so again. It is a really really peaceful spot. read more

This was at least my 4th landscape design project with Samantha / Barrels & Branches. I came to Samantha with a vision and specific plants I had in-mind. I learned that the plants I had envisioned were thorny and were probably not the best choice for my beautiful and newly renovated rental home. Samantha's design was a similar style I was looking for but my project turned out 100% more beautiful than the sample pictures I provided her with. The selection of plants, rocks, mulch, ideas of reusing succulents I already had, plant placement and guidance with landscape lighting was spot-on. I wasn't even going to do landscape lighting and now I can't stop staring at it in the evenings!! I stumbled across Barrels and Branches while in Encinitas. What an amazing place! I was looking for "fire bowls" Samantha was working in the front and greeted me with a smile and an offer to help. She took time away from what she was doing to help me look for what she possibly could be used for my project. I feel she went above and beyond any sort of customer service I have received in years. As we walked around I couldn't help but notice how all the plants looked so well cared for. It was clean and well maintained. I ended up purchasing several veggies for my garden and a few pots for my indoor plants. Also 2 "pots" that will be used as "fire bowls." I live in Fallbrook, however this will be my go to place for my nursery and pottery needs. Besides, any excuse to go to the coast is a great excuse. I'll post pictures of what my "fire bowls" look like once they are installed. The entire staff is wonderful. Helpful, curious and kind. Keep up the great work. I'll be a customer forever. LOVE this nursery! We're not from the area but my boyfriend very kindly offered to drive me down for a plant day and we went to 4 or 5 nurseries in Encinitas. This one was my no-contest favorite. The staff was all super welcoming and helpful. The place itself has a beautiful layout with a lot of clear design and intention. Many nurseries are just sort of flat and....dry? If that makes sense? But this one had a really lovely flow to it and plenty of thought put into every section. Plus I'm a sucker for nurseries with cats. They have a good variety of uncommon houseplants for very fair prices. Will definitely be back if we're ever down south again. read more

I have stopped here 4 times now and found a helpful smiling employee every time! I have never been a fantastic gardener but aspire to be and Barrels & Branches makes it possible for me. The staff gave great recommendations for plants I was looking for to create a safe place for an above ground vegetable garden. I wanted to repel caterpillars and spiders but attract butterflies and lady bugs while having a pretty garden space for sitting and enjoying the mornings. I will be a loyal customer as long as I live in San Diego and recommend this to anyone looking for good quality plants, helpful staff who answer questions, and a wide variety of plants( more than any nursery i have been to in SD). I enjoyed everything about this nursery: -Independent business -Owner is present and knows her stuff! -Friendly and knowledgeable staff -Resident cat -Great plant selection I purchased a couple of California natives (my front yard now has 51% of more Cal natives!) and a few other plants and driftwood. My daughter had fun exploring the nursery and meeting Minnie. There are a few great independent nurseries in my area, but the whole "experience" of B and B sets it apart from the rest. This nursery is THAT place! So quaint and beautiful, I feel like I'm in a fairy land every time I go to B&B. Besides being a well stocked nursery, they have very unusual things you won't see at the local mega home centers or even other local nurseries. In addition, Samantha and her staff offer personal, comprehensive service every time we go. We are also in the middle of a complete landscape remodel at our home which Samantha is leading for us.
