After trusting Barrett Station Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Wieland with our dog's care for eight years, we were deeply disappointed by the complete lack of compassion shown during one of the hardest moments a pet owner can experience. When it came time to say goodbye to our beloved dog, we used Lap of Love based on the clinic's recommendation. Lap of Love notified the clinic of the arrangements, and when I called to confirm they had received the information, the response was simply, "Yeah, we have the info." There was no acknowledgment of our loss, no expression of sympathy, and no mention of our dog. Unfortunately, that same lack of compassion continued when we picked up our dog's ashes. The front desk staff recognized us when we walked in, disappeared to the back, returned with the ashes, handed them to us, and that was it. No condolences. No "I'm sorry for your loss." No card, note, or acknowledgment of the life of a pet who had been a patient there for eight years. We understand that veterinary medicine is a difficult profession and that staff members experience loss regularly. However, a few simple words of kindness can mean everything to grieving pet owners. The complete absence of empathy during this process was shocking and hurtful. What happened was not simply disappointing--it was callous. After eight years of entrusting this clinic with our dog's care, the complete lack of compassion shown to our family during her passing and afterward was unacceptable. We were treated as though our dog's life meant nothing and our grief was an inconvenience. Basic human decency costs nothing, yet no one could even offer a simple acknowledgment of our loss. For a veterinary clinic, where families trust you with beloved members of their household, that level of indifference is inexcusable. The way this situation was handled left us disgusted, heartbroken, and questioning whether anyone there truly cared about the animals they serve. Based on this experience, we cannot recommend this clinic. read more

This is the worst veterinarian office in St. Louis. They have no idea what they are doing or how to actually run tests or figure out if your dog is sick or not. We were told by these so-called that veterinarians that our dog was fine and there was nothing to worry about. We had a bad feeling, so we took him to County Animal Hospital and were told that he may have cancer. Had we not heated that knowing that these veterinarians don't know what they're doing, we may have never known. They are truly worthless. Do not believe what they tell you about your dog. Go get a different opinion from a real doctor. read more

My family and I have been taking our pets (Dogs and Cats) to Barretts Station Vet Clinic for decades. I'm perplexed, and am inclined to find such suspect, anything less than a 4-star review. While I prefer some vets over others, ALL of the vets at Barrett Station are fantastic. Communication has been good. The vet techs are great. The clinic has always been responsive to my pet's needs, and has always been thourogh with any evaluation of any concern. I have been with Dr. Pletz at BSVC for over 20 years! I have had 4 of my own dogs as his patients and my daughter has taken her 2 to him also. He is the kindest most conscience Vet I have ever been to. He cares deeply for all animals, big or small. Everyone at BSVC is so helpful and caring. With any business, not everyone is going to have a great experience. Sadly, we had a terrible one with this veterinary clinic. People considering Barrett Station as a care place for their pets might want to know what we went through. If your pet is going into a procedure where the full extent of the work is going to be determined on the same day as the procedure, BEWARE. You are not going to be updated as to what the full extent of the work is going to be until you get the bill. My father-in-law took our oldest Papillon, Gizmo, in for a new patient consultation with veterinarian and owner of the clinic, John Pletz. Gizmo was checked out and it was recommended that he have a teeth cleaning and that he would have some teeth pulled. No price was quoted at the consult since the full extent of the work was going to be determined at the cleaning. The cleaning was scheduled. Gizmo was dropped off. When my father-in-law went to pick up Gizmo, he had a $1,000 bill waiting for him. After reviewing x-rays, Pletz determined he needed to pull 17 of Gizmo's teeth. He then proceeded to extract the teeth. At no point was my father-in-law contacted about the extensive procedure that was about to take place. No one called to give a breakdown of the price for the exact work being done. No one checked to see if a veteran on a fixed income could even afford to have it all done. There was no explanation about what was seen in the x-ray that would cause more teeth to be pulled than was in the consult. There was no chance to ask if the procedure could have been modified, or if some teeth could have been saved to help mitigate the cost. There wasn't even a chance to consider rescheduling the procedure. Instead he went to pick Gizmo up and was in for quite a shock. He thought Gizmo was simply going in for a teeth cleaning. Thankfully Barret Station had our card information, so they billed us instead of him. Regardless of how minor or major the vet determines the work is going to be, Barrett Station isn't going to contact the owner and inform them of the exact price or the exact extent of the procedure they are about to perform. They are not going to update you about the scope of the procedure. They are simply going to do the work, whether you would have wanted them to or not. Whether you could have afforded it or not. And that works with procedures where the full extent of the work is known at the time of the consult. But if your pet is going into a procedure where the full extent of the work is going to be determined on the same day as the procedure, BEWARE. You are NOT going to be updated as to what the full extent of the work is going to be until you get the bill. Subsequently, my wife and I both reached out to Barrett Station and talked to Pletz. He didn't want to acknowledge our concern. All he wanted to do was tell us he was in the right. I think the final straw for us was when he told my wife about all the big discounts he gave us. In other words, if he wanted to, he could have charged us a lot more. And that's exactly what we were complaining about. Shouldn't the owner get to know the final cost before the work is done? Where's the transparency? And if the full extent of the work can't be determined until x-rays are taken on the day of the procedure, shouldn't the owner get informed about the exact extent of the procedure once that determination is made by the vet? Not according to Pletz. All we can gather from our experience is that Pletz thinks he has sole authority over what work gets done. Pletz has sole authority over how much he bills you for it. And he isn't going to disclose any exact details about the scope of the work or the price in advance. He's going to do the work without giving the owner the chance to say 'yes' or 'no'. And if the owners have a problem with that then how dare they question his authority after all he did for them. After all, if he wanted to, he could have charged them a lot more! I can't describe how badly this sours my wife and I on veterinarians. read more

Awful experience with this office. I have a dog that was in need of a dental exam. After booking an appointment, I was not informed that my dog would be sedated, which I know requires no food past midnight-- was never informed of these parameters, which could have been extremely dangerous for my pet. The tech just asked in the morning at drop-off if he had eaten, and informed me as to why they were asking. And speaking of drop-off. My appointment was scheduled for noon. At 7:10am, I received a text message informing me that the dog was due in at 7:45 for drop-off, when that was never mentioned prior, or when making the appointment. When I left my dog, I asked if the procedure had been moved up, or whether my pet would be sedated while waiting the four hours until their actual appointment, since he has anxiety at being left like this, and was told no, that he would be in a kennel waiting, and that the vet wouldn't be in until noon, which is when my appointment was scheduled. For them to not have informed me about these multiple important issues, and to have suddenly decided that I was to bring him in over four hours prior to his appointment with literally only ten minutes before I would have needed to leave the house is not only completely unprofessional, but unorthodox and not normal from my experiences with other vets. On top of everything, I was told that if a dental cleaning would be required after the examination that he is already sedated for, that they wouldn't be preforming the procedure due to the need for intubation. Why wouldn't the dog already be intubated under sedation? And if he wasn't, why couldn't he be? To be repeatedly sedating an already anxious animal when everything could be done in a single appointment is irresponsible and dangerous to the animal. The only reason for this would be to maximize charges and extract more money for more appointments. Period. I picked my dog up, and will never be bringing him back to this office. The stress placed upon both me and the animal in this situation is completely unacceptable. Absolutely unprofessional behavior, from start to finish. read more

this one is going to be hard to write. Barrett Vet Clinic has been our primary care for our 3 dachshunds. The main care givers are Dr. Gilje and Dr. John Pletz. 10 years ago we purchased two miniature dachshunds females names Gerti and Trudi or the Gerturdes if you will. Trudi has been blind for a few months diabetic for a few years. Trudi was not an athletic dog nor was she much of a obedience dog. If you called her if she wanted to come she did. If not well she didn't. Trudi back gave out on her and she was in pain. Mrs K. took her here and we had her treated with a steroid shot to help her pain. But deep down we knew this was not going to be good. We had to have Dr. Pletz put her to sleep. She is now in dog heaven where she can see, she can come or not come if she chooses, and no more two shots a day of insulin. Her race has been run and we will miss her. Barrett has a special needs room with an exit that lets you leave without going through the lobby after the event. We did need it. I am lucky that still have Gerti and Maury other two dachshunds. read more

Extraordinarily insensitive receptionist!!. I called to ask for details on euthanasia for our dog we have had for 17 years. I asked for details of the process and her response was beyond rude "I don't really know what you want to know" vs providing any level of customer service and she showed zero compassion. She treated me like I was bothering her. I was transferred to someone else who was kind enough to provide details, pricing, etc. with the kindness anyone would expect. After thinking on it overnight I called back the next day to set it up and was again met with the inpatient, insensitive attitude from the receptionist as the day before. I ended up backing out, sick to my stomach by her attitude towards me and am taking our girl to another vet to say goodbye (and will definitely be taking our other dog elsewhere as well). I will never use this place again. You can do better Barrett Station Veterinary Clinic. It's really not too difficult to be kind and show a tiny bit of compassion during difficult decisions. read more

Dr Lynn Meyer is a great vet. She has always been prompt in addressing concerns and has been compassionate and caring with the animals she tends to and their humans. I'm writing this hoping it would benefit someone out there, as I solely depend on reviews myself. Dr. John Pletz mistakenly extracted our pup's adult teeth for his baby teeth. And he covered it up saying our pup never even developed adult teeth (1 yr old at the time) and he thought it was a good idea to extract the baby teeth too without even giving us a heads up whatsoever. He couldn't even give us any explanation on why it was such a good idea, instead he mentioned that he hasn't done any extractions lately. So, is our beloved pup a guinea pig to him? We even asked if they can show us any x-rays. They didn't take any x-rays. This really makes me furious, do they not have any accountability at all? It was clearly a rookie mistake and he was such a coward to lie to our faces. I can't believe someone with so many years of experience can be so irresponsible and so lame at their job. It just agonizes me seeing him running around with missing teeth at such a young age. I wish I can provide my rating individually, because we do like a few of them and love Dr. Wieland. She's been wonderful to our pup and we're still visiting this facility to only see her. read more

I've been going to Barrett Station vet since around 1980 when Dr Gilgey was the only vet & starting her business. I've always felt welcome when I go not just another client. I've stayed with her & group thru the years, have meet & seen a lot of good vets come & go, even some of the techs move on & a few to veterinary school. I trust any vet that is brought in as Dr Gilgy has always held a high standard & doesn't mind hiring right out of college. I've had Siberian Huskies for years & they can be a challenge to care for & also do surgery on. I never hesitate when & if I have to have surgery. read more

My dog started off here as a part of a rescue group. I kept taking him there since neutering would be included in my adoption fee at this vet. I haven't bothered switching him over to my cat's vet yet because they're just so darn friendly and convenient. Nice, clean waiting area. Friendly receptionists and great vets. I think I've seen them all, since apparently my dog is prone to issues as a puppy. We're there probably once a month!! Bonus points that they're willing to work with the rescue!! read more

We followed our vet, Dr. Lynn Pullen, to Barrett Station. It's a drive coming from the city but we love our vet and she loves us, so it's well worth the effort. I have seen a couple of the other vets just a couple of times and have been pleased with both of them. I don't think you could go wrong with any vet in the practice as they all communicate and consult with one another when needed. They also have a referral practice not too far down the road that they aren't shy about consulting when things are out of the ordinary. While this place is definitely not the cheapest vet, I fully believe you get what you pay for where veterinary medicine is concerned. They have a fully updated office, very knowledgeable staff and can do most diagnostic work in house. This combined with a great support staff means we will continue driving to West County for our veterinary needs! read more

Over fifteen years ago, I met Dr. Caroline Gilge and her wonderful staff. Dr. Gilge and Dr. John Pletz were the main care givers to my beautiful blond Labrador retriever, Cody. He lived 15 years, 2 months. Although he received great care and love from all of us at home, the amazing staff at Barrett Station Vet Clinic guided us through the trials and trlbulations of Cody's ACL surgery (age 11) and occasional hot spots. He had an amazing life and BSVC improved his quality of life during the aging process. When selecting a veterinarian to care for your family's best friend, it's important to have very intelligent, resourceful and caring people. My ten year old daughter has wanted to be a vet since she was four. I attribute this to her love of animals and the numerous interactions with Dr. Gilge, Dr. Pletz, Dr. Knight, Dr. Whelan and the Vet Techs. They truly are the definition of a superior veterinarian clinic. We are acquiring our second blond lab retriever this Fall. He will never be able to replace Cody but we plan to have BSVC continue as the care giver for our pet's needs and our needs. read more

I truly cannot say enough good things about this company. They are honest and treat all pets as if they are their own. We've taken our pups here for annual check-ups, emergency issues, dental cleanings, and even had to put our sweet 16 year old pup down several years ago. During every stage, the team has made us feel like a part of the family, by always making a recommendation based on what is best for the animal. They have weekend hours and stay open late, which is extremely helpful when working. Moreover, the care team is conscious of your financial situation - always providing options for different avenues of care and treatment. I wouldn't take my pups anywhere else! Barrett Station has always been there for my pets when I've needed them. Recently, I took my dog in and got the worst news you could get as a dog lover. I had to make a difficult decision quickly. The staff was so great to me during all of this. They were professional and very compassionate towards my situation. Dr. Knight went above and beyond what I could have asked for. I have been going to Barrett Station for 9 yrs. This practice was recommended to me when my dog was suffering from kidney failure. Frustrated with the care she was receiving, a friend said I should go to BS. I made an appt with Dr. Laura Pletz (no longer on staff ), and our lives changed! She managed our dog's disease with incredible knowledge, compassion and professionalism until it was time to say goodbye to our beloved friend. I will forever be grateful for her. When we adopted another dog, Dr. John Pletz cared for our new best friend. His knowledge and genuine compassionate care are remarkable. You will not find a better vet!! Over the years we have seen all of the doctors, and each and every one is OUTSTANDING!! Dr. Knight and Dr. Gilje have brought me to tears with their kindness and care. In addition to the amazing medical staff, the office staff is equally wonderful. Every phone call is taken with kindness and patience, no matter how busy they are. I now live several miles from BS and have many good vet clinics within a mile. However, it never crossed my mind to switch....Barrett Station is the BEST and very worth the drive. My family and I have been taking our pets here since 1999. Most of my interactions have been with Dr. John Pletz (highly recommended), but I have visited with every veterinarian there at some point in time. Along with being reasonably priced and flexible, they are extremely knowledgeable, and yet resourceful and aware enough to know when to refer you to a specialist (as is the case with my current dog having been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer). All that being said, the overwhelming central theme here is compassion. From making an appointment to speaking with your vet to paying your bill and even making end of life arrangements, you can tell they care. I never feel rushed by any of the staff members like I'm a burden or inconvenience. I always have all of my questions answered and all the costs are laid out upfront. I briefly lived in Illinois over 45 minutes away and never even considered going to another vet and probably never will. read more

Dr. Gilje has been my vet for darn near 25 years, thru the ups and downs of many pup-dog illnesses and wellnesses. When we moved to Palm Springs, Ca, one of my main concerns was getting great vet care (been spoiled by the great care at Barrett Station). I use my Palm Springs vets for emergency stuff ( which we try to avoid, but emergency says it all), but, for instance, this summer we drove from Palm Springs to Lake of the Ozarks and on to Barrett Station for dental work on my two pup-dogs and check-up and shots. Love the office personnel (very professional and friendly) and the vets (my fav is Dr. Gilje) are top-class. I never feel like my visits are dollar driven (in Palm Springs, you don't get out of one clinc who shall be not named, for less than $350.00, no matter what, talk about add-ons). Common sense care and the knowledge to back it up.....doesn't get any better than this clinic. Would love it if they would consider opening a branch in Palm Springs......I laughingly told the receptionist I drove literally half-way across the continent to get dental care for my dogs, and I have a hard time driving across the street to get my dental work done, I think I know where my priorities are.. read more

If your dog has allergies as mine does, Dr. John Pletz and wife are fantastic. My dog literally looked like she was dying. I have followed Dr. Pletz from Webster to Wildwood and now to Barrett Station. Millie, my dog, her paws were without hair and bleeding, her skin condition was just awful. Hot spots all the time. I went to him and she looks brand new. Dr. Pletz calls her Million dollar Millie because we have taken so many steps to help her with this condition. I give him 5 arf's. read more

You cannot go wrong at this clinic. Yes, their care is not cheap, but if you will stop at nothing for your furbabies, this is the place for you. Caroline is a very intelligent woman, but does not speak down to you. They all believe in educating and informing their clients, but in layman's terms. In addition, you could not find a more realistic and caring staff - they know when it's time to explain about quality of life, and they are there for you emotionally should you have to make that decision. I've been with Caroline since she's started, and from three cats and four dogs, we've been through puppyhood and kittenhood to ending the journey at the Rainbow Bridge. Once she even kept my 20 year old beloved Russian Blue going until my teenaged children could get there to say their goodbyes. I wouldn't go anywhere else. My breeder uses them, and all their staff are interested in having dialogues about alternative medicine and ways to make your pets' lives easier in your family. There is no one else who I would take my animals to....and I trust no one else's advice. This is the best vet clinic in town. read more
