When I came back a week later for the appointment to redo a root canal I had to wait for an hour before the Endodontist came in to do the root canal. When I finished I had to pay 400.00 dollars for my portion. I had no idea that the consultation was 300 dollars and the root canal was 1400.00 total of 1700.00 dollars for 45 minutes of work. I paid my portion and received the receipt. started to go home and I looked at the bill. I didnt understand so went back to the office to talk to the office manager. She was very curt with me and didnt care that I will have to pay out of pocket close to 600 dollars. Utah valley Endodontist is not willing to work with people on a fixed income.

So I told them they would just do the exam and x-rays and they told me they would charge $100. I asked to speak to the manager and the manager assistant told me they would no longer do the exam and they only charged $75 for some x-rays and I was left without the exam and cleaning. Basically they stole my money because in the same calendar there is another coupon with the promotion that includes free x-rays and consultation for new clients. I came in for a routine cleaning and was told I had to get a panoramic mouth x-ray that would earn…read morethe clinic around $300. I was told it was to screen for oral cancer. Being 23 and having no risk factors, I politely declined. I was then told it wasn't optional and all patients had to get this x-ray that wasn't completely covered by insurance and earned the clinic $300 a pop. This is dishonest to try and force people to get a scan. I tried declining again and was told I had to do it for "legal reasons." It seems there's no worry about the legality of a procedure that's "not optional" and only a concern about saving the dentist from getting sued no matter how much extra radiation it takes. It wasn't until I said no 3 different times that the hygienist agreed to postpone the scan until "next time." I wouldn't be surprised if they've forced many people to get this scan who don't really want it but don't feel like no is an option. This is a huge problem for informed consent. Several weeks later they told me my experience was untrue and they scan only costs $42 (??) and didn't mention anything about how they'd tried forcing me to get the scan during my visit. As a patient it feels very deceiving to be told by your dentist office that what they told you while you were there wasn't actually true and they were just overcharging the "real" price. It also feels very deceiving to be told the American Dental Association recommends every patient pay for a panoramic x-ray every 3 years and then not be able to find evidence of this recommendation anywhere on the ADA website. It feels even more deceiving when the recommendation you find on the ADA website is in fact nearly opposite of what your dentist says it is. Even if a dentist decides they would like to have their own schedule of routine imaging, it is frightening when they fight against a patient declining a service. I would be wary of trusting what they tell you at this dentist office.

The $2400 implant tooth that Dr. Ellis had subcontracted out ended up getting a hole in it after 9 months. So Dr. Ellis charged my clueless son over $750 more to have a replacement tooth made (because my son didn't get the insurance...too bad!!) WHAT?! I called immediately and disputed that the tooth should last AT LEAST a year. Dr. Ellis backtracked and agreed to reimburse my son's account $750 and that the subcontracted tooth was "most likely" flawed. Oh, thanks for admitting this..then why did I have to call..were you hoping to not have to eat the cost of poor quality subcontractors?! Then, my son asked for an estimate for a cash teeth cleaning. They quoted "about $200". Today, after my son's teeth cleaning they charge him $311! He disputed the charge and they said, "Oh, we had to take extra x-rays." WHAT?! He then disputed that he didn't request extra X-rays ...and they lowered the cost to $238. Gee, thanks. The staff IS friendly and it's all very high tech...just get your cash estimate in writing.
