I went to Barry's E 64th St for a Sunday 10:30am class, as a lot of the morning classes at other Barry's Manhattan studios on ClassPass were full. When I walked in, this class was also completely full (looked like ~50 spots between treads and floor). It was a very sweaty and exhausting 50 minutes, but such a great workout! For the standard Run X Lift Total Body class, you alternate twice between treadmill running and HIIT floor exercises. The instructions can be a little confusing the first time, as the instructor is explaining to the treads and floors simultaneously. You get used to it after a few sessions. The music was upbeat, and the class had such good energy to keep you going. Marquel was a great instructor - positive, encouraging, and provided clear instruction, but also extremely tough. I was so exhausted at the end. Compared to other Barry's locations I've been to, this one was spacious and well-ventilated, which I appreciated. If it weren't so pricey ($40/class), I would probably come more often. They do have a NYC first-timer special of 3 classes for $60. read more

I have only been to one other Barry's Studio. But this studio is one floor. Has some retail to choose from. They have many lockers as well. Reading some of the reviews people have been saying how some of the treads were broken or the buttons were wonky. I did not use the treadmill in my class but I think I overheard someone say they had a tread issue. Also, I noticed it was a bit hard to understand the instructors. Not sure if it was the sound system or their mics, or if it was just me. read more

Barry's E. 64th Street offers a good workout that is guaranteed to get your heart rate up and you sweating! The workout consists of intervals of running on the treadmill and body weight / use of dumbbells for various exercises. I find the instructors motivating, and they offer good cues. For the treadmill portion, the instructors give ranges for the speeds as guides, so you can adjust depending upon how you are feeling. It really is up to you! You get what you put into it. Do I leave the workout sweaty and tired? Yes. Stronger for the next workout? Yes. Coming back again? Definitely yes. This studio has theraguns to use to help with your muscles before or after the workout. It is also easily accessed by a variety of trains (F,Q,4,5,6,N,R,W). read more

I've been here twice, the locker room is really hard to change in and right when there's more than one person around - also the weights and amenities are a little worn out. When I went this evening, I was in the shower and when I stepped out one of the Barry's employees (a man) was in the WOMANS shower room replacing towels. I felt so uncomfortable and told him, he said he was just there to replace the towels, I don't know why they couldn't send someone else in? I won't be returning read more

Fantastic location with great staff as holds true with all Barry's! It's a bigger studio and well-maintained. You enter the building and you have to go up the stairs (or elevator if legs day was too much the day before) to get to the actual studio. There are tons of lockers and men's and women's locker rooms. The fuel bar is to your left and the lobby has tons of space and retail. The red room is big and an actual rectangle shape, sometimes studios are L-shaped, making it hard for some newcomers to see everything that is going on. I usually frequent the NoHo, PAS, and Chelsea locations to see my favorite instructors, but this studio is closest to me so I may be coming here more often! I took a class with Michael and I think he's great for newcomers as he actually takes first-timers in the studio to do a run-through of the workout which is super helpful as the class is very fast-paced. After class, I picked up my smoothie, and I didn't even realize, but the smoothie was about 3/4 full. The employee noticed this however and offered to add more almond milk in to fill the smoothie. I gave this place yet another try at the 'suggestion" of the manager. Barry's bootcamp - According to their response a place for beginners to intermediary people to workout. I found it a DANGEROUS place, ALL of my experiences were poor to mediocre. Its nearly impossible to hear the teachers cue students while the floor and also the demonstrations are poor, no corrections so unless you are familiar to working out, you are likely to get injured. I have tried this enough times and only am giving it two stars because of a min afternoon class that was half full I was able to hear some cues and the teacher did demonstrate the exercises well enough that if you are intermediate to advanced strength training you'll know not to hurt yourself. Despite all that the workout is incomplete. Especially on a "full body" day there were no glute workouts (the strongest muscle and most important in your body to prevent back injuries). BB is not a strength training despite mixing some hypertrophy (exercises to make muscle grow) and other to make other muscles simple toned) if you're a Girl looking to get your booty/ legs in shape I found this to be the poorest place to go. Great Business Miodel, but not a place for serious lifters. read more

I've taken 40+ classes at various locations, and this one has the worst staff and an even worse manager on site. I booked a 9:20am class on a Sunday and arrived at 9:18. My spot was given away when I arrived b/c I did not read the fine print, that if you fail to arrive 5 mins prior, you risk having your spot being taken away. I was ok with this altho this has never happened to me before as policies are policies, but what was disheartening was the attitude of the staff and manager - everyone was unapologetic and treated this as if this was 100% your fault, that you deserved what happened because you did not read the fine print (and imagine having the manager who treated you with no respect, and sarcastically said "have a nice day" when you left the door with no workout in ). I used to frequent the UWS location and everyone there was dedicated to creating a friendly and welcoming vibe, not the case at this location. read more

I took my first Barry's workout at the UES location last week and loved it so much, I decided to come back. I booked through ClassPass because I was in the middle of a promotional trial - seemed like a no brainer. I was torn between 7:20a and 8:30a, but signed up for the latter thinking I might be able to change in the morning (it's the Monday of a holiday weekend). I got to the *basically empty* studio at 7:10a, and the front desk manager told me I couldn't switch because I was signed up through a 3rd party. I asked if he could just check me in to 8:30a on my way out, which had plenty of open spots. He said no, and was rigid in his reply. I was so shocked by his coldness that I couldn't even think of other options available to me - a $20 no show fee for the 8:30a... or he could have charged me the full class if unexpectedly 8:30 sold out, (it didn't). There is no one who wanted access and couldn't get in on this sleepy holiday. Anyway, while I couldn't think of these options in my state of shock, he could have. A good manager would have. I totally understand a policy, but also case by case hospitality goes a long way. Note, I stayed in the studio for the full hour waiting for the 8:30a. He didn't say a word. Thank goodness it's NYC and there are unlimited great fitness options because poor management is a reason to skip out on Barrys. Further, to not realize people use ClassPass to decide where to really invest/commit, is shortsighted and a missed opportunity. read more

By no means I would ever label myself as athletic, but Barry's will change your world. Without a doubt, the workouts are not easy, but: - the pace is quick and alternates between treadmill and the floor (weights), - the music is loud and thumping ( feels like soul cycle ) - the rooms are dark with sultry red lights ( which tricks you into thinking that time doesn't exist hence you focus better) I always breeze by their weekend classes feeling like a million bucks from the intense workout and the endorphin high that comes along with it. How to make the most out of your FIRST class: 1) Arriving 15 minutes earlier so you're mentally prepared and have time to check in at the counter and place your belongings in a locker. You may also place your smoothie orders now if that's your thing 2) Bring your own water, preferably those large squirt bottles where marathon runners pour all over themselves ( cause you're going to want to do that at some point ! ) You're only given a limited time to rest, recharge and hydrate ( less than a minute) before they torture you all over again so efficiency is key here. 3) If you can get some warmup exercises going before arriving the gym, definitely go for it as they don't have an area for stretching/warm ups here. Once you enter the red workout room, its GAME ON and you'll be expected to jump on the treadmill or head for a series of pushups right away. 4) Take advantage of the showers room after as You've totally earned it ! They have some nice Malin and Goetz products: face wash, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in the showers. Also basic amenities such as blowdryers, deodorant, cotton pads and some unbranded lotion for you to freshen yourself up after. I looooove Barry's but rather frustrated with this location. I bought a 6 pack weeks ago. I have one class left to use and had it booked before it expired. A day earlier I was in class and the routine caused me to throw my back out (not the instructors fault obviously). So due to this I had to cancel my next class because I can't move much and been stuck lying down. I call and ask if I can get some extra time because the last class from the pack expires in a few days and they tell me I have to go to my doctor and get a note. So you're telling me I need to physically go to my doctor. Which I'll have to pay a copay for, which is the price of the class essentially. Then come to you with the note, when I can barely walk. Yeah not happening. Thanks for being so caring. I've only probably spent thousands of dollars with this company and I can't get one favor. Sad...... read more

I have done Barry's Bootcamp 3 times now, and every time, the work out is legit good. I already wrote a review for my experience in San Diego, so this review covers my workouts at the UES location in NYC. First this place is nice and big. You walk upstairs to get in. The bathrooms were big with showers and lockers with built in locks. There is also free towel service at this location which is great if you want to shower after your workout. The showers and bathrooms have soap and shampoo too. There are lockers with built in locks outside the bathroom areas also. The front desk personnel were very nice and helpful. They were polite and energetic. It was nice talking to them before getting inside to the work out area. I went to Arms and Abs day on Monday. It was outstanding!! I started on the treadmill and after a quick 2 or 3 warm up the instructor had us doing sprints and some hard runs for the next 8 minutes. I was winded and my heart rate was up (I had a heart rate monitor). The first set of floor exercises targeted the abs and triceps. Lots of bench dips and burpees, in addition to some other exercises which I had not done before. We also used weights to do skull crushers, and triceps kick backs. It was hard. We then got back on the treadmill for another 10 minute session. Again pretty hard sprints and hills. The next floor exercise was again 10 minutes and focused on the biceps and abs. We used bands and weights, and again my biceps were burning. The last treadmill exercises was for five minutes and was not as intense. Still got my heart going but I knew the end was near. The same goes for the last 5 minutes on the floor. Hard but not as bad as the first two sessions. We then stretched out for 5 minutes and the hour was up. I loved my work out and felt great. This location is so awesome that the next class is free!! So even though I was tired from the previous day, I decided to do the butt and legs day the next day. I also read that this is suppose to be the hardest class. I have to say it was hard but not as bad as I was expecting. Same format as Monday 10 mintues of tread mill followed by 10 minutes of floor two times and the five minutes of treadmill and 5 minutes of floor to finish it off. Another great work out. The instructor really focused on the butt and upper legs. I was working muscles in a different way than I usually do at the gym. Enjoyed this class and instructor again!! Barry's is a great workout. I have done so many classes and this is by far the hardest and most intense. The instructors are pushing you the whole time and some how have time to look and correct people's form. Totally worth coming here for a workout. It is hard for me to attend other classes after coming to Barry's!! I can't wait to come back to this location. read more

Oh Barry's Bootcamp. Over the past year or so, I've come to enjoy Barry's workout model. For newcomers, it's essentially a 1-hour class alternating between the treadmill and floor-based exercises. Sounds pretty basic, but nonetheless, Barry's gives you a solid workout. This location in the UES is fairly comparable to the other locations that I've been to (NoMad, Chelsea). The location is easily accessible with the Q, as well as the 2nd Avenue bus. Crowd-wise, it's also fairly similar to the other Barry's locations that I've been to. Any class that's held in the mornings or early evenings are pretty much packed to the brim. With that said, I've come to frequent the 8pm classes because they're usually half full. The locker rooms themselves are roomy enough. There are plenty of showers, and I've never had to wait for any of them. Outside of the locker rooms, there are an abundance of day-lockers for people to use as well. Lastly, there's the standard juice bar that they have at every location. Lastly, the workout itself is exactly the same that you'll find at every location. Hence, for folks that live in the UES, this place is a no brainer for Barry enthusiasts. read more

My second time, I went last week with my friend took the 710a class with Omri I was scared and thought I would throw up before we even began. I gotta say it was not intimidating at all and even return today on my own went at my own pace but I pushed at the end of the day as Omri says "it's my work out, my hour" so investing in my self was worth the push. Last week it took me 2 days to get over the "doms" that set in my thighs were on fire from the squats...can't wait to see what I wake up like tomorrow. Can't wait for the next class. And shout out to the 2 amazing front desk staff these guys are super friendly and made me feel at easy when checking in...I even forgot my locker code and locker I threw my things in (did I say I was nervous and sacred) and they couldn't have been more helpful. read more

The class was great but the location isn't as good as the Hollywood and the guy working at the smoothie bar was very rude. The person who checked me in was friendly and the instructor was good too. It wasn't as intense as I had hoped for. However I did enjoy the class. May be because I ordered my drink after the class got over that the smoothie guy looked like he didn't want to make my order and didn't make me feel comfortable with his rolling eyes, and taking forever to make the drink and being rude and asking me which seat were you on? Like straight up. And in terms of customer service, the guy receives a zero and the smoothie he made wasn't that great either. I had very good experience with Barry's in Hollywood with the staff, instructors, location and awesome smoothie. But here, the smoothie was less than average. Don't get the Green Latifah on a Tuesday night because the guy certainly doesn't know how to make it. This location is the closest to my house and the instructor was great too. But I do love my after work out smoothie and if I have to deal with this guy everyday, I doubt I'll come back to this location. I still have 4 classes left from my package and will rather try a different location. And I read other reviews as well and customer service seems to be a problem in NYC locations. Management should work in this for a sustainable business. read more

Update- Have been coming here every week twice-three times a week and I'm obsessed!!! The shakes are so good and the workout itself is awesome. I don't use the locker room showers but people seem to like them! Definitely recommend! So I've been to this location twice since it's the closest to where I live. Lockers are great and the locker room is stocked with everything you can imagine (showers, blow dryers, lotion, deodorant, etc). Front desk receptionists are sweet and facilitate the check in process. The workout itself is a great workout so get ready and expect to feel sore afterwards! Although, I wish the teachers explained some of the floor movements better, and I wish stretching would be longer (I believe that we stretched for like 2 minutes after the workout was over). The teachers also aren't the nicest, so don't expect this place to have a "Soul Cycle" vibe where all the teachers are perky and enthusiastic. There's a reason it's called a boot camp I guess, the teachers are there to make you feel better and look better and get you past your comfort level, endurance wise. I will frequent this location for the workout. If you're a beginner, you will do fine. I recommend for a great workout, but not for a "fun" workout. Get ready to work hard! No pain no gain! I still have yet to try the smoothies they make. read more

Barry's continues to be one of the best workouts I've tried. Always gets my blood pumping and the vibes and energy in the room always make me work out at 100%. I've been to a few Barry's locations and love this one. The instructors are fun and energetic, and I have no idea how they are able to shout out the workouts and keep the floor and treads engaged. Locker rooms here are nice, they have showers and several items in the bathroom for getting ready and freshening up a bit. Could be bigger, but then again, so could everything in NYC. read more

I'm a Barry's enthusiast and so happy they opened a UES location. I also frequent Park Ave, UWS, Noho, and Chelsea but this is my favorite. The locker rooms are spacious and the red room is filled with new woodway treadmills. All the instructors are fantastic and ridiculously attractive. **This is not a review of the actual workout. They are always amazing. This location totally does not live up to the brand that I have loved over the last few years. For being a boutique studio this particular location is lacking. The men's locker room is missing supplies such as dirty clothes bags and the shower dispensers are broken. Furthermore, after my class the "fuel bar" was closed. That's a first after attending many Barry's classes over the years. Most importantly, I am incredibly disappointed in the front desk personnel making fun of an eager first timer after she walks away. This is not the attitude I think the company would like portrayed. I have been to this location twice on Saturdays and both times, I had a very positive experience. Highly recommend those who wants to get lean or get some motivation, which is why I signed up for the trial. I am a regular at a separate gym, but wanted some way to motivate myself and get some new routine in --- and these classes helped with that. On Saturday, they host the full body workout and while the work is different based on your instructor -- I was still very much challenged. I had Michael (the only Michael instructor at this location as he claims) and was great! He really explained the exercise well and got people motivated ...BUT my second instructor the following week... was FANTASTIC. Don't remember his name.. but he relocated over from Cali and usually is in the UWS location as he said. He really pushed people hard and the class is much more intense (which is good). As with all location's, you can preorder your protein shake...They have the standard small lockers with built-in locks in the common area. The men's locker room was super clean! The only complaint there was that the shower had very little pressure...You literally get sprinkles of water and this adds to the shower time... Plenty of towels and also I wish all Barry's location have a water fountain where you can fill up yourself. The protein bar is kind enough to fill your bottle up with tap water though... The front desk guy is nice and helpful...can't say nothing bad about this place. read more

Definitely experienced better. I moved here from SF not too long ago and I have to say that SF has some of the best Barry's studios and instructors. They're all so motivated and know how to put on a great class. However, the classes I've taken here don't really compare. I've been to a handful of Barry's studios here but I frequent the UES branch. First off, I think that instructors should be encouraged, if not required, to change up their routines from week to week so that no class ever feels the same. I took the same Wednesday class for about 2 months with the same instructors (I won't name names) but that class was literally pretty much the same every single time, which got very boring, so I stopped going. One other thing I have to mention is that the music selection are not good! When I'm working out, I want music that will pump me up and get me excited about working out. But at Barry's, I've had instructors that would play really lame music, from Aerosmith and Cher (I kid you not), to Meghan Trainor. I wish the instructors would at least put more effort into creating a kickass workout playlist rather than just setting a random Spotify playlist.. There are tons of amazing studios in Manhattan, so Barry's, you need to step it up. read more

I went for my first class recently and have to admit that Barry's kicked my ass! In the best way possible :) WORKOUT I did the "Abs" class and the hardest part, in my opinion, is the treadmill workouts. The treadmill portion consisted of alternating between jogging pace, running pace, and sprinting pace -- but I did do some walking at 4.0-4.5 to help me cool off a bit. I didn't go beyond 9.5 which may be bad, but they had people sprinting at 12.0 which, to me, is CRAZY! I also have a foot injury though so I was genuinely afraid of 1) hurting myself and 2) falling off the treadmill. Next time i go though, I'll definitely push myself to go beyond that. The ab workout itself was intense, and I felt the burn, but it wasn't as intense as a pilates class I took recently. I'm sure that's because I was doing the poses a bit incorrectly, so it would have been nice to have extra instruction. AMENITIES They have a great smoothie bar, though I didn't order anything. I can't speak to the quality of smoothies, but I did see you can pre-order your smoothie and it'll be ready after class. You can also buy water there, but I'd recommend bringing your own water bottle. I think the folks behind the smoothie bar can refill your water bottle. LOCKER ROOM The women's locker room was small, with four showers (I think). I thought it was weird that there wasn't any facial wash or lotion in the mirror/sink area -- where most of the women were blowdrying their hair and reapplying their makeup. Nor were there any scrunchies, spray deodorant, or other helpful things that you would find at a FlyWheel or other boutique gyms. I thought this was odd and a bit frustrating. Barry's UES is the BEST location and has the greatest staff and instructors. Having been to many gyms, boutique fitness centers and spin classes across New York City, Philly and all across the country, the Barry's Bootcamp workout is by far the most challenging and I love it more than anything! I'm 100% devoted to Barry's UES and attend class multiple times per week and month. I must express my love and utmost respect to one of Barry UES phenomenal instructors DANIELLE W.! Danielle W.'s classes are by far the BEST and most amazing classes I have ever taken at Barry's!!! Danielle W.'s class programming is incredible and her workouts like no other! With an amazing playlist, Danielle W. is incredible with her tough yet kind, but determined personality that pushes you beyond your limits. You can't get a more perfect combination than that for a Barry's Bootcamp workout! Danielle W.'s style and energy fill the class and you individually feel in no matter if you are on the floor or the tread! She is a perfect fit to the many faithful who come through the doors for the morning classes at Barry's UES!!! Everyone must go to a Danielle W. class at Barry's UES, you will immediately be hooked. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Barry's UES make DANIELLE W. a permanent, full time instructor at Barry's UES!!! I cannot express this enough to get her on the schedule full time!!! This is review is mainly about the location - I love taking Barrys in general! I've been taking classes at various NY locations, and unfortunately I was not impressed by this one. First off, the entrance area is dark and industrial looking - not quite what I need if i'm trying to get psyched about an early morning class. The front desk staff didn't help much either as one of the ladies didn't look up, nor crack a smile when I signed-in. When I asked for assistance she also seemed reluctant to help. There are fewer showers which make racing to get ready for work an added obstacle. Not a very spacious locker room as compared to PAS. The instructor was very high energy and sweet, but I feel he tried to pack in too many exercises to target total-body. I understand that was the point of this class, but please slow down - there were a lot of transitions to keep up with. read more

I have done Barry's many times for many years in multiple states and typically really great...but the class today at 4:20 just wasn't challenging at all and not worth $38. I think the instructor was new, so I don't want to discourage people from trying, but I do encourage the location to make sure each class is going to give participants a tough dynamic workout as promised. Was not due to the weights I selected or the speed I choose...it was the structure of the workout as a whole. read more

i love barry's so much. this location is my fave because it's 3 feet from my apartment. matt n.'s classes are my extra fave because he's the bomb.com. down to brass tax: the facilities here are larger than most locations and recently revamped, but the locker room is pretty tiny. if youre planning to shower/get ready post workout, expect to feel a bit cramped. as for the actual workout, barrys isnt really for the faint of heart. its an hour and its intense. as a daily workout program it would be incredible, but youd hafta be really rich. as an avid runner, i have found it beneficial to incorporate the classes into my workout schedule. read more

I've been to 2 classes so far (both Full Body) and thought they were really good workouts. I liked the second instructor better than the first, so I would recommend trying classes at different times. You can make the workout as hard or as easy as you want. For example, going faster/slower than the recommended range on the treadmill or completing more/less reps for the floor exercises. It seems like everyone is giving it their all, though, so you'd probably want to do the same. Since I sign up for classes through Fitreserve, I don't get to choose my spot or decide whether I start on the treadmill or floor. I've done both and it was fine, although I did read somewhere that starting on the floor gives you a better workout. You should already be familiar with exercises like burpees and mountain climbers because the instructor shows you how to do it once and then you're on your own. No one goes around to check your form and make sure you're doing it correctly. Sometimes it's a little chaotic since the instructor is shouting directions to the people on the floor and on the treadmill, but if you look around and see what your neighbors are doing, you should be ok. The portion on the treadmill consists of walking/jogging/running/sprinting. In one class, we also jogged and ran on different inclines. In the other class, we did side shuffles and also sprinted on dynamic mode (you hold on to the front of the treadmill and push the belt with your feet). Not easy stuff but you definitely feel like you accomplished a lot after the work out is over! read more

Barry's is a great workout. The intensity level is perfect with a great community of supportive, friendly participants and instructors. I highly recommend Barry's and this studio. horrible experience with DYSFUNCTIONAL treadmills. the treadmill buttons weren't working when i was on a 10mph sprint and expecting the speed to slow. very scary. then when i went to shower there was zero water pressure and the water became freezing cold. not a great way to end the night. when i told the front desk, the women was completely unempathetic and blamed it on the building. i usually love barry's but this experience and the way it was handled really makes me question my loyalty. read more
