Before Barry's became a global fitness cult, it was, for me, a specific downtown New York initiation. Tribeca at One York was my first doorway in, delayed by Hurricane Sandy, and walking into that studio felt like the beginning of something. I'm pretty sure my first class was with Rebecca Kennedy, and I left blown away, humbled, and very close to throwing up. Barry's earns its reputation the hard way: inside the Red Room, the workout becomes a negotiation with your lungs, legs, and pride. It is still brutal, and it takes commitment, usually several classes close together, before you feel even halfway decent in there. Life and budget have kept me away for 18 months, so if I walked into class tomorrow, I know exactly how humbled I would be. The work is punishing, intentional, and never cruel. The running has always set Barry's apart: Woodway treadmills made it smoother, sharper, and more athletic than anything else I was doing. I still remember Rebecca using "treaders," a funny little word that later disappeared from the instructor lexicon and somehow still makes me nostalgic. My favorite class was Butt and Legs; I'm sure Abs and Ass has a smart rationale, but that old format had magic: visible results, better running, real strength, and a more athletic body. Noho took what hooked me at Tribeca and showed where the brand was going. The studio was larger, the floor plan was better, and the experience felt like the prototype for how Barry's could scale while keeping its heat. It felt perfectly appropriate that Barry's Noho sat across from Indochine, as if downtown glamour, discipline, sweat, and scene had agreed to share the same block. Tribeca gave me the origin story; Noho gave me the blueprint. Barry Jay once said something close to this: Barry's was like a nightclub without the drugs, alcohol, and traps that can come with those environments. That has always felt right to me: the dark room, the music, the bodies, and the energy dialed up and down like treadmill speed. Barry's carried me through marathon training, brutal work seasons, and bosses I will be diplomatic about here. More than once, it helped me keep getting up and keep going when life made that incredibly difficult. Some mornings, the Red Room did more for my sanity than coffee, a calendar full of high profile meetings, or a well meaning pep talk ever could. I would run, lift, sweat through all of my clothes, and walk back into the city feeling more like myself. Watching the brand grow has been its own pleasure: Barry's retained instructor quality across markets, turned front desk talent into coaches, earned recognition in smaller cities, and moved its merch upmarket. I worked uptown around the investment circles that eventually backed Barry's, and I remember seeing the pitch book before North Castle's investment. Barry Jay's class at Tribeca, and the original West Hollywood studio with beige linoleum tile and tiny beige lockers, reminded me that the workout built the brand before the brand became glossy. Treadmill, floor weights, rinse and repeat. Fast intervals with an instructor pushing all class. This location is clean, large, with good sized locker rooms with showers. It's been upgraded a couple of times over the years. Pro tip: bring your own water, it's expensive. read more

Let's talk about Barry's. First of all, they charge you $20 if you don't show up to class. Like sorry Barry, didn't realize I was on payroll. Honestly, I should start charging them $5 every time the instructor mentions they moved to NYC from middle America. That would at least balance the emotional labor I'm putting in while doing burpees to a dubstep remix of a fire alarm. Also... why do they care so much if I don't show up? I paid for the spot. My ghost should be allowed to sweat in peace. And yet somehow, even when I do show up, there's always someone already in my spot. Yes, I get there two minutes before class starts, but that's called efficiency. It's not my fault Chad thinks he owns tread #5. Let's not forget the floors--genuinely unsure if the sweat puddle I stepped in was from today or the Reagan administration. The space is packed tighter than a rush-hour subway car, and the front desk crew greets you like you personally keyed their car. Vibes? Not immaculate. And the music... look, I can handle some high-energy bangers, but half the time I'm doing push up to a track that sounds like a garbage disposal having an existential crisis. I could do Romanian deadlifts and push-ups in my living room without paying $40 and a chunk of my dignity. If you're into overpriced chaos, bad music, and cardio-based trauma, Barry's is the place for you. Considering the following, it's just ok. I love the fact that you can buy a pack of classes, and use them throughout the city. It should also be noted that you can also go between run/lift or cycle/lift - wonderful options when you want to change things up. Lastly, there's a class at pretty much any time of day, so it's easy to make a reservation. My issue with Barry's though is that there's very minimal instruction on how to correctly lift, or how to even do the movements that they ask you to do. The Barry's instructor blends into the rest of the crowd and it's so hard to keep track of what exactly we're supposed to be doing, and those around you are just doing random workouts too. The price is enough to deter me to be a consistent member, considering what you get. Note though there is a 2 week unlimited for 99$ that I've had my eye on for new members! read more

I went for the first time with classpass and it was a ton of fun. 1 hour class with about 15 mins of lifting and 15 mins of running, alternating twice. The workouts are as difficult as you want them to be. You're in control of how fast you run, and how heavy you lift. The instructor was fairly good at yelling out instructions even for a first timer like me. By the end of the workout, I definitely had worked up a sweat, partially because the room isn't ACed and partially cause the sprints were killer. The treadmills here were quite good cause they make it easy to pick a speed and the treadmill is cushioned. The class wasn't too packed since I went on a Sunday afternoon. read more

I was on youtube and came across Barry's SNL skit and I was reminded of Barry's bootcamp. I'm an avid Soulcycler, but I used to try every boutique workout studio known to men and women- and I haven't stepped foot inside a Barry's for a few years. Today I cheated on Soulcycle with Barry's. My class was with Brady. I usually hate running but I was reminded that Barry's has these weird type of treadmill, it kind of feels like you're pushing off of them and it doesn't impact my knees as harshly as normal treadmills. I worked my ass off in class and I enjoyed working up a good sweat. I'll probably add in Barry's to my routine now. One thing I didn't like- the class is pretty big, and at Soulcycle, the instructor is on an elevated podium so you can see what's going on but the Barry's class was a little chaotic because I couldn't see what the instructor was demonstrating from my spot. I would suggest booking near where the instructor stands if it's your first time. All instructions are given over the mic and honestly the music was kind of loud and it took me a while to figure out what's going on. I also forgot Barry's has Oribe products in all their studios. I went to Barry's Noho for a Sunday morning class. I'm pretty sure it's everyone's new year's resolution to get back in shape, thus the class was completely full (looked like ~50 spots between treads and floor). It was a very sweaty and exhausting 50 minutes, but such a great workout! For the standard Run X Lift Total Body class, you alternate twice between treadmill running and HIIT floor exercises. The instructions can be a little confusing the first time, as the instructor is explaining to the treads and floors simultaneously. You get used to it after a few sessions. The music was upbeat, and the class had such good energy to keep you going. Ianthe M. was a great instructor - positive, encouraging, and provided clear instruction. If it weren't so pricey ($40/class), I would probably come more often. They do have a NYC first-timer special of 3 classes for $60. My only complaint for this session was that the room was pretty hot, even with the fans going - it's okay because it made for a better sweat. read more

I have always wanted to take a class at barrys and experience their hard core workouts. I received a free class being a first timer and easily made a reservation on their website. You had an option of picking your workout spot whether you did double floor or treads and floor exercise. I opted for the treads and floor exercise to get the full experience despite my hatred for running. I arrived about 10 minutes before class and the person at the desk welcomed us to our first class and gave a short introduction about the facility. I grabbed a towel and headed to the ladies locker room. There was a water dispenser so you could bring your own water bottle to fill up. The lockers had their own locks so you don't have to bring one. They also had showers but I didn't use them. Once we were inside the instructor welcomed us as well. Her name was Ashley Wang and she was so badass. I really enjoyed her class and she was able to keep me engaged. She didn't go around correcting form but it's up to you to pay attention to the exercises and push yourself through them. It kind of felt like orange theory except everything was in a sultry red light. Orange theory had rows in addition to the floor exercises and treadmills. read more

Where it goes down hill - I had money stolen from my locker during a class, staff has a master key. Barry's did not taken responsibility for it, despite having attending 100s of classes. We laced up and sweat it all out . I like that Barry's always come up with some new collars with likeminded fitness brands (Lululemon, adidas and much more) to make your experience even more fun. It wasn't easy, it wasn't pretty. I wanted to scream, sometimes I wanted to cry, but I was surrounded by women who uplifted me. Their energy was contagious! Their die-hard dedication to the workout was inspiring! And this is why Barry's is a great workout for those who are looking for more than just come to a class, and run out. I live in Miami and Go yo Barry's Midtown all the time. So because I love Barry's so much, I decided to go to Barry's while vacationing in NYC. This was my third time going, I was not happy with it the first two times, so I decided to give it another try. The concept is the same but the pace, vibe, intensity, and music is very different, they never turn off the lights when you do the crazy sprints. That is Barry's 101. To be honest kind of lame. Don't get me wrong you still get a good workout but Miami Barry's is much more hardcore. I really did expect more from NYC. It was a waste of $36, it's even more expensive than Miami $30 per class. This was my first time at their Noho location. It was very large and spacious. The class I took was capped at 50% and even that felt pretty stuffy. With the new CDC guidelines, they did offer vaccinated people the option to go maskless. I would say more than half the class did. I chose to keep my mask on anyway. The workout was great. My instructor Michael encouraged us to go heavier on the weights. I definitely struggled but hey you gotta start somewhere. I enjoyed the treadmill portion of the workout as well. I'm hoping to get back to my pre-pandemic level of running fitness with the help of these classes. As far as the locker room experience, there's plenty of lockers with 4-5 showers. Right now there's not as many people per class so the locker room cleared out very quickly. They offer Oribe shower products and two Dyson hair dryers. It was pretty chaotic for first timers; the instructor can be hard to understand since they're instructing both the floor and the treadmill groups and they shout out exercises that you would have had to know how to do already. However, once you get the hang of it, it definitely gets you sweating. I like the combination of running and weights; the intervals keeps it interesting! Love this location and Barry's in general! Took a morning class that was absolutely packed, probably due to the amazing instructor, Erick! I just moved from Boston, where all the trainers are extremely tough and provide consistently great workouts. Finding an instructor here in NYC who is just as tough and committed was truly a blessing, I will be sure to keep taking his classes! In addition, the staff was so helpful in every way. My smoothie came out perfectly blended, which sometimes doesn't happen at other locations. The front desk staff was also essential in making sure I got my size in one of their leggings. Barry's has the cutest apparel, and I wanted to buy a matching set, needing an XS for both the sports bra and the leggings. They didn't have the XS leggings in stock, but the staff made sure they could bring in a pair for me from another studio to pick up later in the day! Absolutely loved the apparel and I am so thankful for the staff for helping me out! One note: they did not have hot water running in the showers after class. It was not just my shower, as another lady and I discussed the issue afterwards. However, things happen and I don't blame the studio at all. Hopefully the issue will be fixed soon! read more

I love Barry's Noho. I go here twice a week when I'm in NYC. For reference, Barry's is my favorite studio class. So take this with that in mind. It took me a while to figure out which instructors I liked for which reasons, and I thought that would be helpful for others: Favorite instructors: Mike E - Love his class for weights and especially good at toning your arms and shoulders - transformative. Running is often on the easier side, so know that you can push yourself in his class without burning out. Also, if you're less keen on running this is a good one. Great music! Fits the pace of the class really well. Josey - Sometimes the easiest class, so good for beginners. But also a ton of fun! The good thing about it is that you can push yourself here knowing that it usually isn't the hardest - ie: run at a faster pace than you might usually, and go up in weights for a challenge. Running is *usually* on the easier side. Keoni - Prepare to pass out or pass away if you're taking his class. I love it because it's extremely challenging across the board. If you're not a runner, beware of this one. Slight quirks that can be frustrating - he doesn't let you take a mat and then has exercises face down on the floor that are pretty dirty from everyone sweating on them and tracking the streets of NYC into the class on their sneakers. Just a small pet peeve. Sarah O - Another very challenging class, especially the running. She also has creative and difficult core workouts up her sleeve. In short - Mike and Josey for weights, Sarah and Keoni for challenges across the board and stronger runners. I have been to other classes, but don't want to call out any cons from those, because everyone here works really hard and puts out good energy. read more

Do not come to this Barry's studio, and especially, don't get a smoothie here. I have been to over 10+ Barry's studios, mostly in New York and around the world. They forgot some ingredients in the smoothie I always get and I know for sure because i always get the same smoothie and know how it tastes. They insisted that they didn't and refused to refund me. I reserved two spots for the class and they changed one of the spots without asking me and nearly couldn't find me another spot. They didn't apologize about anything that happened. First time attending a Barry's class and it was a fun but definitely a hard workout. I felt good after I was done. The workout is 50/50 cardio treadmill and weights. (Pre-COVID review) Barry's Noho is one of my favorite Barry's locations in the city. The studio itself and the instructors are always on point. I've never had a bad workout here. This location is super spacious, and there's plenty of lockers in both the very front as well as in the men's and women's bathrooms. I consistently like the instructors here and like that many of the classes are full (need that extra bit of motivation!). The workout in the "red room" is equally split between floor exercises and treadmill work. You can always opt for double-floor, if you really hate running, but I think the treadmill part of class is what makes Barry's Barry's. Depending on the day of the week, the floor exercises target a different part of your body. You reserve a spot before class and can always call in or use the app/website to rebook your spot in advance. The reason I love Barry's so much is because of the treadmill bits of class. While I find the floor exercises decent (can vary a bit depending on the instructor), the treadmill intervals are great for someone like me who absolutely hates running. I cannot run to save my life, but I can get through the treadmill sections of class just fine so I wouldn't worry if you consider yourself a "bad" runner like me. You're guaranteed a great workout every time you come to Barry's. The locker rooms have showers and Oribe products, which is great for getting ready. It's to be expected, but it is incredibly busy and packed on weekday mornings, so I'd budget enough time to get to work. There's also a smoothie bar like every other Barry's location. You can order before class and have it ready for you when you walk out of class or you can just go to the counter and order. Also, shoutout to Barry's for having free Instagram lives during the Coronavirus outbreak. This is the best workout in NYC. Its hard. Its sweaty. It will get your in great shape. You have to get yourself out of your comfort zone and make it happen at Barry's. Its worth the price and you will sweat like you have never sweat before. Each of the trainers have their own style, and thats a good thing. You will never get bored, if you do, thats your fault for sure...these folks know how to motivate and keep you coming back. The running is pretty intense. If you push yourself as you should, you will run about 3 miles each class. The floor exercises, vary but will teach you things about your body you never knew. Why does my hip dip so low on planks??? Why are my shoulders compensating for my lats? I dont know the answers...but I promise you they will. Great workout. Great place to get your sweat on. read more

One of the premier workouts in NYC. 4/5 stars not because of anything wrong with the class/concept but because nothing to make it so unique to warrant a 5/5 star rating. It has all the essentials and does it well! I've been to many workout classes throughout Manhattan (ToneHouse, Soulcycle, Warrior, Training Lab, etc.) and I find Barry's to be towards the top (Still my personal favorite and by far hardest workout I've been a part of is ToneHouse) The Noho location is very clean. Nice facility. Great bathrooms. Smoothie bar. Individual lockers. Clothing for sale. For those unfamiliar with the class it's basically interval running mixed with floor work. You'll be asked to utilize weights/bands and perform various body weight exercises. The instructor I had was Max. He kept a good tempo to class. It was Arms and Abs focus. Definitely felt I had a good burn. After the class I went to the Smoothie bar and the Chai protein smoothie. It was $9 and delicious. Better than my usual PB and banana smoothie. I will be attending Barry's again. Great class. Easily burn upwards of 600-700 calories in an hour. Great for people at all levels of fitness (novice to expert). Would recommend. read more

First of all...the new space is great. Situated a short walk down from the 6 train Astor Place stop. All the instructors are great. So if you are unfamiliar with Barry's it's treadmill work and weights. I for one hate running but I need it in my life, so I must suck it up and go to Barry's. A typical class follows the following format: treadmill for 15, weights for 15, tread again, weights again. Some instructors have 3 rotations which I like because the variety takes my mind off the pain. They have shakes available to order after your workout. If you don't feel like running, sign up for double weights, but don't be fooled, depending on the instructor that can totally kick your behind as well. My legs are sore from my Total Body workout at Barry's yesterday. And I love it. I've been trying to book a class here through classpass, but it seemed the only available times were at 5am or during the work week. Luckily for me, I booked a 315 class on a Sunday in NoHo. Random time, but I was excited. I'd say about half the class were very buff men. With another ten percent being regularly buff men. Was excited and intimated at the same time. The class itself is an hour long and split between a treadmill and the floor. For "total body" days, the weights are dumbbells and medicine balls, and most of the exercises are done from a step. I love to run, but usually do it outside. Was a little uncomfortable running at full speed on a treadmill. Felt like I would fall off. I feel more secure being clipped Into a spin bike or lifting weights on The floor. Anyway, for the treadmill portion, the instructor told us what incline and speed to go to for a HIIT workout The weights part was my favorite. It's worth mentioning that previously mentioned buff me skipped out on the treadmill portion and did twice as many weight sections. Perhaps I should take notes. Using Dumbbells, we did many classic, as well as original weight weight lifting series, as well as one core section with a medicine ball. Was pretty tough The locker rooms were amazing. After being all gross from class, the showers had face wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash from some fancy spa. All smelled really good and were scented in herbs such as mint and cilantro. If you're going to put yourself through a Barry's class, you might as well go to this NoHo location (Tribeca isn't bad either, but the bathroom in the basement just throws me off) as it's convenient to get to, larger than the other locations (the Chelsea location is so cramped and SO PRETENTIOUS), and has plenty of people to size up and use as fitspo. After trying out a bunch of other studios with similar level of workouts, I can say that Barry's is a solid 3 out of 5 for me. It's not as challenging as some make it out to be (it's definitely not easy, but you can hit a plateau real quick here), and the classes are not very interesting or engaging. The facilities are surprisingly not impressive as one would expect from a place run by notoriously snooty staff and a client list of celebs. Due to the popularity, the classes are always packed, and the instructors are non-attentive. I was actually caught off guard when one of the instructors noticed I ran weird on the treadmill (due to a weak right knee) and offered me an alternate workout...I mean, it's very rare for them to show any sign of concern and not hover over you and make you feel crappy about not keeping up. While Barry's is worth checking out a handful of times to quench one's curiosity, it's not the type of place I'd rave about or return to. read more

I took an chest, abs and arms class with Amber. It was good. I pushed myself on the treadmill and felt so wiped out after the class. Overall, good class. Facilities: The locker room seemed cramped up, bare and too gray. I like the UWS facilities better as it is more spacious and aesthetically pleasing. Every time i go in the there I come out stronger and feeling better about myself, but to mention super full of energy. I can't say enough about how much I love this place. Give yourself a treat on the way out and a delicious chocolate and peanut butter protein shake. I went to a Sunday morning full body workout using classpass. The gym itself is clean and has great vibe. The red lights in the one and only exercise room gives the room an exciting and mysterious vibe. The class itself is challenging, but definitely doable. However, I feel like there are too many people in a class: as a first timer, I found it really hard to follow the trainer's instructions. Also, the space everyone has is very small. In all, I find it to be an above average gym, but it doesn't match its "best fitness class in the world" claim or worth the 14 classpass points I spent on the class. read more

I was very, very, very, very skeptical before going to Barry's. I thought I was going to die, I thought it would be a scene, I thought it would only be full of gym junkies, and given my lack of athleticism I figured I would get yelled at A LOT. I was so wrong about all of those! The place is pretty clean, service super friendly and helpful, and everyone is there to simply work out at mixed levels and grow. The ventilation is excellent and music is always killer. Most of all, while instructor personalities are mixed, they are generally pretty encouraging and helpful. I have NEVER been super athletic, but Barry's is doable with hard work. I will forfeit my weekly SoulCycle to start going to Barry's! Only complaint is it can sometimes be harder to understand the instructor as they give explanations to the floor and tread at same time. read more

Went to this location for my very first Barry's class and I had a very fun workout!! The front desk staff was very nice and welcoming. They answered all my questions patiently and guided me through what was coming for me! I took a class with Josey. My friend and I (we came in with a buddy pass), sweated through an awesome playlist working on our backs and chests while alternating with insane treadmill runs/sprints. Really cool workout and unlike anything I have ever done because I never take classes. I think Barry's boot camp is keeping true to its reputation of intense and fun workouts. Loved it! The ladies' locker room was pretty small, but clean! You don't need to bring your lock to guard your stuff, they have a "create your own pin this once" locker. Awesome. I was able to use one after trying out 2 that were broken tho. One of them had the door falling off and the other wouldn't lock. I also like that they have lockers outside of the locker rooms, so you don't even need to get in there to lock your stuff. Have a fun sweat!!! read more

I've been a huge Barry's fan since it first came to NYC and I love the Noho location and this review has nothing to do with the classes. But, it's finally time for me to talk about the Fuel Bar after my last encounter with the man who works behind the counter. I've experienced him before and I thought perhaps he was just having a day, you know, it happens to everyone. Fool me twice, shame on me - as the Belgians like to say! Picture the charm of Cruella de Ville (sans the fabulous coat), the personality of Mel Gibson, and the manners of Bill O'Reilly and you begin to have an idea of the type of person you're dealing with. He is one of the rudest individuals I've ever encountered and after asking around I've found this is a prevalent opinion. He is curt, surly, and downright mean. If you're not standing in the "right" place, don't expect to order anything. Instead, be prepared for him to yell at you to move to another area. It's very soup Nazi-esque. Phenomenal workout. Took my first workout at Barry's and it was great. I really couldn't have asked for anything more. I went to a Monday class which is abs and arms day. I really like the fact that they stick to the same regime all day. The workout is broken down into 25 minutes on the treadmill and 25 minutes on the floor. The time is divided into intervals so you will be going back and forth. Don't worry the treadmill is only a few steps away from your mat. Everyone is assigned to a treadmill and a floor space as well so there is no confusion or scrambling. The instructor pumped some good music which had me motivated to work harder. The workout itself was amazing. Implementing running like that is a major plus for me since Im into running. It is so healthy to add running to your workout I think the idea is brilliant. The floor exercises that he had us do pinpointed every single arm & ab muscle. Two days later writing this I am still sore. The exercises were amazing and if I can continue to go I think the results would be great. Yes this place is expensive but the workout is worth it and I plan on buying a package in the near future. read more

Not for everyone. I workout regularly ( 3-4x a week) and get my cardio elsewhere ( soul cycle) So i look for HIIT toning type workout to get me lean and strong. I tried this location twice - hated the treadmill they seemed old and loud-and hated the incline we had to do.. So i skipped it the second time and went for just the weights, which I wasn't a huge fan of - Felt like something I could do by myself.. nothing special. Trainers don't seem to correct form, could lead to injury. Hard to see what trainers are doing since they seem to stay near the door, and don't walk around class. The whole workout felt like I could have done it myself at the gym with basic equipment. Also felt like they try to squeeze cardio and weight training into one class thats less then an hour, So you don't get the full benefit of either. Stretching at the end was terrible, only a minute and very VERY basic and then you are hurried out... could not find an area outside of the studio to stretch on my own. Final verdict, this will make you lose weight and tone to a beginning level of fitness, but not the best to do if you are already in pretty good shape and are looking for more advanced options to take your body to another level. read more

Solid workout, but nothing that you can't do by yourself. If anything, the full body session I attended was a basic workout you could find through any simple google search. The hour was broken up into four pieces: two on the treadmill for cardio, two on the floor for strength training. I wasn't particularly challenged, and I didn't like how the instructor fails to correct poor form. If you are new to fitness or are severely out of shape, you will get a good workout/challenge at Barry's Bootcamp. Otherwise, I would recommend looking elsewhere for a solid workout session given the endless options in New York City. I was originally going to rate them as 2 stars, but Matt the instructor was a nice guy and the facilities are decent. read more

I use classpass and have come here twice. Both times were WILD workouts. As an athlete and fitness guru I am often skeptical that workouts for "mixed level" are geared toward novices however this class was really really great for literally everyone! You move back and forth between the treadmill and the floor - allowing for a full body workout. The environment is really great too. The instructors prompt high fives and self care. I even took off my shirt and just wore my sports bra for the first time in a class....ever. I highly highly recommend this class. There are three locations in the city so find one near you! The facilities are superb. They have very nice, clean showers and a great locker room. They have a juice bar with smoothies and fresh juices too! Love this place. Love love love it. read more
