If someone tells me they do Barry's consistently, I just know they're a DAWG. You can cheat solidcore, you can cheat corepower, but you can't cheat Barry's. You gettin a SWEAT. My only issue is I really can't make out 70% of what the instructor is saying. I find it so hard to discern if she is talking to the people on the floor or the people on the treadmills, let alone what she is actually saying... but I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer so take that with a grain of salt. I just kind of look over at what my girlfriend is doing, and do +1 speed or just go straight by feel. I love the mix of weights and cardio, and there is nothing like pushing yourself on a treadmill to see your top speed. There is something so freeing in making the mental decision of "I'm either going to hit this speed or I'm going to hit the floor in front of this whole class. No in between." You can also order a smoothie to be ready right when you finish class, which is such an elite touch. Having my Slutty PB smoothie waiting for me after I just left my soul in the Barry's Red Room is what life is all about. Remember earlier when I said I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer? I can't believe it's taken me this long to write this review--I've attended over 200 Barry's classes across nine different studios with 60 instructors, and Philly has quickly become one of my favorites. While my most frequented location is Noho from my NYC chapter, Philly is home now, and I'm grateful for this studio. Barry's is the gold standard of fitness classes in its size category (global presence). The workouts are consistently challenging, the music is always on point, and the instructors are fantastic at reading the room. They push and support when necessary, creating the perfect balance of motivation and intensity. One of the things I love most about Barry's is the community. There's something special about knowing you can walk into a studio in any city worldwide and get the same high-quality workout, clean amenities, and a welcoming vibe. The Philly studio delivers on that front. A key differentiator for Barry's workout is the running portion. I truly believe running makes the workouts significantly more effective, and the Woodway treadmills are unbeatable--they have lower impact, are smooth, and are fun to run on. The studio is top-tier--always spotless, with well-maintained lockers (with locks!) and a fuel bar that makes post-workout refueling easy (shoutout to the delicious shakes). The Barry's app is also well-designed, making it easy to book classes and understand the daily focus areas. I also appreciate the diversity of trainers and workout styles--each instructor brings something unique while staying true to the Barry's experience. While I haven't purchased any apparel yet, I love that Barry's partners with great brands and consistently offers high-quality gear. Most importantly, Barry's Philly is diverse, inclusive, welcoming, and always striving to improve. I'll keep coming back and continue to be a Barry's evangelist. Oh, Barry's - a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Whenever I'm in a new city, I like to check out their food and their Barry's. I like (generally) knowing what's in store for me. The front area is more spread out than the Boston locations and the red room also seemed much bigger, though with the older generation of Woodway treadmills that take forever to get up to speed. Locker room had the usual amenities and similarly cramped space to shower and get changed. I took my cousin to Sydni's weekend AM class and appreciated that, even with a fully packed class, she took a minute to come over and explain how things would go. With all that said ... things got so damn loud. The music overwhelmed the instructor's mic. For some of the cues/moves, I could not hear a thing. I basically went with whatever my neighbor or the person in front of me was doing. Or I decided to do my own thing (for the second treadmill round, which was all inclines, I decided to basically jog. Sprinting at 8% incline? No ma'am.) I tried taking out my earplugs and things weren't any clearer, they were even more ear-splitting and I figured I was irrevocably damaging my hearing by that point. Anyway. I always walk out of Barry's feeling sweaty and accomplished no matter how challenging or frustrating the workout, and I suppose that's the point. Also for this location, instead of the Lifesaver mints, they have the Andes mints, which are 1000x better. read more

Truly the best workout in the world. Combining cardio and weight training keeps the workout interesting. I will say it is hard to understand what the instructor is saying when you're on the treadmill, but you can still figure it out. Everything from the energy to the music makes it a great class! And I also love using the showers and whatever products they have in the locker rooms! read more

Barry's facility is very nice. Excellent quality shakes to choose from (additional cost, and more than other places I've seen, but the quality is within the shakes themselves too), the staff will have your shake prepared right after your workout if you ask, and bathrooms have shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and even face wash. Towels are provided for the showers, smaller towels for working out, and you can buy water if you don't have your own as well. Apparel is available for purchase, and the designs weren't capturing my attention. There is also a hair dryer and lotion. I was surprised to hear someone using the hair dryer today at all as that person should've used the outside early September heat leftover from August to dry their hair. I tried this gym as a result of my work giving me two free sessions with Barry's. The location is very convenient for those that live in the city. Spaces are typically tight for a city gym. It is definitely a more athletic personnel gym, but like pretty much any gym, there really isn't a lot of social activity if you don't already know someone. Barry's at least in Philly seems to have an lgbtq friendly vibe, which I highly approve of. After my first session, one of the facilitator's tried to relate to me after my first session and commented on my sports goggles on how some 70s athlete first wore them. We were totally out of sync on that conversation. Seems like he would be a cool guy in another context possibly. All the trainers were professional and motivating. The staffer servicing me at the register was particularly helpful and kind as well. He was very on-point. They have lockers which is a must. (I had one time attended a gym years ago and they did not have lockers surprisingly.) One thing I didn't like was that I came early for my first session because I was coming from the suburbs, and then I walked much further away in the hot heat because I didn't want to pay too much for parking. I also didn't want to park on the side and worry about messing up how much time I had to park. I ended up about 1 hour and 20 minutes early for my session, and the entrance was locked at the time. I tried to call and the staff told me there weren't enough staff to man the front of the store at that time, and that I wouldn't be able to sign up for an earlier class. So either, I could keep my class or sign up for a later one. Of course I kept my class. This last minute logistic was a stressor for the process of me to work out. The gym was supposed to be open when I came as it was still during their opening hours. Considering the high quality status and vibe of the gym and how expensive it is for an individual patron, also the fact I already had a reservation and they could've reasonably requested for me to show ID before coming in at such an early time especially, I think me having to not be able to wait inside the gym at a minimum was lacking good service. When I was asked for text feedback, I let them know this and I was told that I could wait in the gym until my next session. I know this gym already isn't a good fit for me, but I'm glad I got a chance to try it. I've tried to rate the gym based on what they can reasonably offer as a gym based on a combination of factors such as price, quality of products and service, etc., rather than that the gym should be a good fit for me. I'd still want to come back only if my work was offering more free classes, but on my own, even if I lived nearby, unless I had a friend that was paying off my classes and I lived nearby, it would not be a first choice for me. read more

One of the worst parts about relocating to Philadelphia was leaving my Boston Barry's family behind. But a highlight has finding a new Barry's family here! The staff at this studio are so friendly and welcoming and they honestly make the sometimes painful early mornings brighter. As a long time fan of the Barry's format - it never gets easier - these guys pull it off really well. And the studio itself is in overall really good shape. Instructors are awesome. I love Dylan (one of the nicest instructors ever with a fantastic and energetic class) and Justin (also one of the nicest instructors ever with one of the hardest but rewarding classes I've taken). I've also taken a class with Asher and one with Sydni and they're both great as well - and both have awesome music! Locker rooms are typical, with limited space but they're serviceable. If you have to take a shower there might be a short wait but nothing terrible at all. If you're looking for an awesome workout in Philly with awesome people, look no further than Barry's. read more

I've been to Barry's Rittenhouse location around 15 times since they first opened. Pros: -Convenient location -amazing locker rooms with Oribe shampoo/conditioner/ body wash/face wash. -really nice staff at the front desk -Smoothie bar (if you care about that, I've never used it) -it's really freaking hard Cons: -it's pricier than alternates like Orangetheory or Unite -they say specific numbers for speeds and weights (ie, "8/9/10 for sprinting") which can feel bad if you're not that fast or strong (compared to Orangetheory's "push pace" for example). That being said, I do my own thing and the instructors have never called me out for being slower than others. Plus it's dark in there so no one is paying attention to you! -it's SO LOUD it literally hurts my ears. I just use earplugs during classes which they provide and then it's the perfect volume. -it's really freaking hard ha so if you're not used to intense workouts then be prepared to be sore for a few days after! read more

Barry's, for anyone not playing attention to boutique fitness, is probably one of the original boutique fitness studios and has spread to be all over the country. The set up is basically interval training on treadmills switching off with strength training. You book the class, pick where you wanna start (floor/tread) and then when you get there you take your assigned place and let the fun begin. Your instructor will walk you through all the different circuits. The concept is similar to Unite Fitness, Orange theory, ripped and BPM, to name a few. Have you been to unite fitness in Philly? It's the same thing - except since Barry's is a national brand with all the name recognition that comes along with it. If you've been to unite/ orange theory and like that type of workout you will like Barry's. Do I think it is a harder/better/ at all different? No. It's just wrapped up in some cuter wrapping paper (and, of course, more expensive) Speaking of wrapping paper, the studio is stunning. Clean, large and has a juice bar. And as a gal who loves her amenities, I enjoyed every bit of it. One thing I will say I love is that the treadmills have some give in that they are meant for running and interval training so the impact to your joints is minimal (this is a huge relief to me as I normally a spinner who avoids treads bc of previous injuries) Will I be going back? Of course - it's a beautiful space and some of my favorite instructors from other studios are there now so I will definitely be dropping in on occasion but I just want to reiterate that there is no "secret sauce" to Barry's. read more

Took my first class today at Barry's. It was great - I took the 12:15 with Ahmad and now I am bringing a friend to try his class on Saturday for the first time as well. The employees were very friendly, everything is new and clean and good equipment, locker room is immaculate and well stocked with everything you need to shower and get ready, good quality products. It's a great one stop shop - also grabbed a smoothie for lunch which they have sitting ready for you on the counter when you leave if you place your order before you go into the class. Ahmad was an excellent instructor (I appreciated that i could actually hear him and understand his demos and instruction well) sometimes with these classes with loud music if you're new you have a hard time following but that was NOT the case here it was great. Good balance work treadmill then floor then treadmill then floor again. Instead of getting stuck on the treadmill forever which in my opinion makes classes feel longer. The class flowed very well. Great music and playlist today helped keep you motivated through the entire class. Even at the end when you were in the home stretch had great song choices to keep you pumped and pushing through. When you finish class you receive a cool towel which is a nice touch. Assuming I can walk tomorrow and I'm not too sore I will be back tomorrow! Highly recommend to all! read more
