Let me start by saying that I'm a loyal Barry's customer. I have been attending since 2005, and have taken close to 1000 classes. I have been to every LA location and the London Central one. My favorite spot is the Sherman Oaks location. It's smaller than the others without all the extra amenities, but the instructors get to know your name, correct your form, and it's like a small community that I always look forward to seeing.
But I have to say, Barry's Venice is a far cry from the Sherman Oaks experience. The venue itself is nice - big locker room, smoothie bar, photobooth, stretch area, etc. But the amenities can't overcome the subpar workout, which is what you're paying for.
Let me explain:
I purchased a number of classes for the Venice location, and since it has more amenities, the classes cost about 10-15% more than Sherman Oaks. I'd be okay with that, except that the workouts are ONLY 50 minutes instead of the 60 minutes at all the other LA locations. So basically, you're paying 10-15% more for 18-20% less working out. Moreover, this felt like a bait and switch, because when I purchased the classes, there was no indication they would be shorter than other locations. When I asked about the truncated classes, I was told that some of the first timers were turned off because 60 minutes was too much. That doesn't make a lot of sense. Barry's has a long tradition of 60 minute classes, and clearly, they were able to expand considerably. Their motto is "the best workout in the world"; Venice is more like - "an OK workout on the westside."
And I say this because the trainers here are not nearly as strong as the other locations. I have taken half a dozen classes in Venice, and have NEVER seen an instructor correct form. In fact, when I look around the class, there are often people doing the movement completely wrong, which is a recipe for injury. This is the complete opposite of ShO. Take Erik Steffans class, for example. With a completely full group of 35+ people, Erik constantly corrects everyone's form. You will never see anyone doing a movement incorrectly, because he pays close attention. When I mentioned the lack of instructor form correction in the Venice location to the head of customer experience, she said that it would be brought up to the person who trains the instructors. Guess what? 7 weeks later, there has been absolutely no change. Barry's needs a QC person attending classes regularly. Or even better, ask experienced clients to rate new instructors and give constructive feedback. If instructors aren't living up to the Barry's name, then the brand suffers. There are so many places to work out in LA, and at $25/class, I'd rather not waste it on a workout I could do on my own.
The Venice experience is completely impersonal. At the ShO location, all the instructors ask your name if they haven't met you before. Better yet, they remember your name, use it, and know your strengths and weaknesses. Not only does it feel like having a friend working out with you, but you're also getting better because they pay attention to the individual, even in a group setting. In Venice, none of the trainers ask your name. And even though they have a cheat sheet that corresponds to each person who is on a treadmill/bench, they never use it. That leads to an experience where they mostly just demo a movement for the class and yell out speeds. You definitely aren't getting the "individual in a group setting" workout.
My biggest gripe is that, unlike other locations, there are no sanitary wipes to clean up the bench area or treadmill. I have brought this up multiple times and was told it would be fixed immediately. I was told the wipes were ordered. It's been 6.5 weeks and I went last night - still no wipes. There are few things more embarrassing than leaving a pool of sweat for the next person using the bench. And while I take multiple towels with me, using them just smears sweat all over the area. Not sure what takes so long to order wipes, but couldn't they just go to Vons and pick some up?
Adding on to that, in at least half the classes I've attended, people take their sweaty mats at the end of class and put them in the stack that says "clean mats only." Once one person does it, the entire class follows. That means the next class is getting dirty mats.
I'm giving the location two stars - one star because I received some free classes after noting that I paid for 60 minute classes, not 50 minutes. And the second star because the locker rooms are nice, parking is easy, and you get a chilled scented towels at the end of a workout.
But despite those perks, I can't recommend the Venice location until they restore the quality that made Barry's a "go-to" destination for getting in shape. It seems that they're so busy opening up new locations that they've forgotten their core customer - people who want a tough workout, with qualified and involved trainers, in a place that is hygienic. read more
