Nicolas David from the Voice has played here numerous times...and this tavern consistently draws acts from the Twin Cities. The best part of the whole deal is that I have never been charged a cover to get in and see good music. Sometimes, during shows, they serve free beer in the back from a keg...most likely PBR. Free music, and free beer? Is this heaven? Looking around the bar, enjoy the years and years of graffiti on the walls in the back of the bar. There are some really great artists in this town...and some fancy poets. The bathrooms are so full of markered writing, you could stand in there for a number of minutes just to take it in. I was impressed with the selection of crappy and not-so-crappy beer, and the service was great. The sound from the stage was great, and there was a little area where people would dance. I found the people watching here to be second to none...such an eclectic mix of society in here.

I stopped in the scary restroom on my way up to the show floor and ten minutes later, I went back down to take a phone call (because it's the quietest place in the building regardless of echo)...in that ten minutes someone had smashed the back of the toilet seat all over the floor so I had to stumble across the rubble. The crowd was eclectic and bizarre. The NA ginger beer was spicy and delicious (best I ever had). I got hit on by what appeared to be a creepy Swedish kid on E. All-in-all it was awesomely reminiscent of my days of youth...and though I realized and am by far too old to go to places like that anymore...I did enjoy more sober, loud, weird time. If you're confused, I do recommend it; if not for the highly weird, strange, sober (but not sobering) experience- then for something a little different from just bar-hopping or sitting at home watching anime and talking to your cat.

However they hunted me down again to ask me again to pay and I tried to explain that I had just paid them but they didn't listen to me or didn't believe me and I had to pay for a second ticket all the while the other roadie with us never had to pay.

I hope that the musty smell can get cleared out somehow because that's a little overwhelming, but I think it's just from being closed up for so long. We will definitely be back! Although I was only in one area of the LaCrosse center, that area was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. Despite all of that, the most impressive thing of all was the staff. Our group ended up hosting far more people than had RSVP'd but the La Crosse Center staff came through with seating and food for all, quickly opening up nearby rooms, putting down tables, chairs, and centerpieces without acting surly as though it were a major inconvenience. Kudos for that. And I don't know who made the desserts for our reception, or if the La Crosse Center caterer provided them, but they were A-maz-ing.

I saw a lot of martinis and cocktails coming out of the bar. There are waitresses, but it looked like just 1 bartender. She was BUSY! Waitresses were just standing there while the 1 'tender was working her ass off. We sat at the bar and barely got service because she was so busy. I of course don't know how the place works, but it seems like someone could have helped her. We only stayed for 1 beer and left because we couldn't get any of the bartender's time. It would be a cool place to hang if maybe we sat at a table. (I felt out of place being in my Packer's gear.) I see they do live jazz music. That might be worth going back for someday.
