The gentleman at the counter was very knowledgeable of older series and up to date comics. They even offer comic grading services for all collectors interested. The store has a decent variety But They do have a strict no-weighing policy on booster packs, even by hand. I understand it's meant to keep things fair, but from a customer standpoint it can take away part of the experience when buying packs. Seems like they're willing to deter customers away and from past reviews I can see a few of these customers that have been burnt or feel they can be overpriced as well Just something to be aware of if that matters to you. read more

I miss Thor IYKYK I love that I can grab a handful of comic books and fill in gaps with this shop. There are always new covers to explore and Games to consider in the glass cabinets. I have gotten several card storage books for my artist trading cards. I like that they zip up and allow me to bring my art everywhere. This is a fantastic store. I will be back soon. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Came by recently and the man behind the counter (older, bald gentleman) was both unprofessional & unwelcoming. I'm not sure if he is the owner, manager, or other staff. He didn't acknowledge me or my kids upon entering the store. He proceeded to talk trash to another man at the counter about an electrician he had hired to do work that was not meeting his expectations. We were never welcomed or greeted and his attitude was that of someone who doesn't seem to truly value customers. He seemed annoyed and inconvenienced. We have purchased cards several times here, but will be taking our business elsewhere after this experience. I am thankful for this experience so that we at least know who we were supporting. read more

It pains me to write this review because I literally take my kids here every weekend after their soccer games as a reward especially when they score their goals. On April 29th, I stopped by to pick up a few items for my son, and the bald-headed (not the owner) couldn't be bothered to help and just ring me out for my transaction. The items are literally 2 feet away from the register. But he was very attentive with his phone though. This isn't an isolated event also. Out of all the employees there that I see on a weekly basis, he is the rudest. I'm happy to take my business elsewhere. read more

Was both surprised I had not reviewed this place and that it wasn't a solid 5-star shop on Yelp. After reading some of the reviews it seems that another local shop's customers may have done some review-bombing as several one-star reviews mention going to a certain nearby shop. Oh well, you can't please everyone or control how customers of another shop will behave, I guess. My wife and I live in Mesa, AZ and we love stopping into Bases whenever we are in the Lancaster area - usually for the annual Antelope Valley Fair and National Alfalfa Festival. We were back recently, and the shop was great as always. Such a huge selection of Marvel, DC, Image, and many other independent publishers for comics new and quality back issues at a great price. Also, a great selection of sports cards, non-sports cards, and supplies. We always reminisce with the owner about his old cat Thor who used to greet us and let us pet him. Sadly, he thinks it was a large owl that got to Thor one day as he went missing and has never been seen since. I highly recommend pulling off the highway and checking out Bases if you're ever in the area. You do have to go up to a light, make a left, then another left to get to the parking lot, but it is well worth the small hassle (odd city planning most likely to blame). Let's start with the positive. It is lovely that a place exists that supports Magic the Gathering even a little bit. While I disagree with the majority of support behind Commander it is nice for a place to go for a pre-release for a new set once in a while. The service is fine, they do exactly what they need to do. The reason I give 1 star is due almost exclusively to pricing. Bases does not price their products in a fair or competitive way. In fact, the price points I see them place on their product is definitely immoral and borderline predatory. This obscene pricing has now bled into tournament price points. $100 for a pre-release that normally runs customers $45 is awful. This scalping level price is solely a response to the demand the community has shown in the upcoming Final Fantasy set. I'm disappointed that fellow Magic players will shell out these ridiculous prices as it only incentivizes what I say again is predatory and immoral behavior towards your customers. Shame on Bases Cards and Comics for engaging in such disgusting business practices. I look forward to the day they come to their senses and look to create a wider base of retuning customers and not see people like me and others who want to return and support a local business driven away. read more

I''ve been coming here for a while now and have spent quite a bit here also. I have always been pleased with the service. Today, I took both of my children here to choose something to read. The owner, Rob was great. He has always been spleasant to me. The books come in plastic bags. The book was plants vs. Zombies zomnibus vol. 1. It retails for 19.99. We get to the car and my son, who is 6, takes it out of the bag and opens it. The words are kind of small so he really didn't like it. So I go back in and let him choose 2 other books that are both 9.99. We go up to ask one of the other guys that work there if we can do an even swap. It hasn't even been that long since our previous purchase. He told me, if he didn't like the book, they can't swap it. He then told me a couple more times that if my son,who is 6, doesn't like a book, can't swap it for another one. I didn't even want a return. I just wanted to swap the book for something he would like. Feeling like he disrespected my 6 year old for not making a good choice about a book that was bagged that he knew nothing about, we left. I then decided to call and ask the owner if he could swap the book. He was cordial and said there wasn't a problem. So we went back in and the same gentleman came up and started lecturing me on the fact that this is the only time that they would do this. He then kept talking about how if a child comes in and doesn't like a book that they can't swap books. They would not have lost any money. Instead, because of someone deciding to be rude, giving me an attitude, and leaving me and my 6 year old feeling disrespected for a single bad choice, he lost rob, the owner, thousands in future sales. Free Comic Book Day 2019 Bases Comics: So, this year we started our comic book celebration at Robbie's shop. There was a line at the door. My children and I got in line, and waited patiently. We took some pictures. My kids were excited. We got through the door. The store was packed wall to wall. There were giveaways going on. We saw the FCBD table. Patrons walking around one end of the table to the other. Some patrons grabbing one or two issues. Others grabbing five to ten issues. There are no limit signs up anywhere. It's FCBD. No said anything. Not at the door. Not at the table. I saw Robbie twice. There was always someone in front of him. I told my kids. One copy only for each title you want. That's it. They understood. We followed the crowd. From one end of the table to the other. The giveaways continued. People grabbed there FCBD issues and left. My son watches one FCBD patron put fifteen books quickly into a small box. 20 minutes in, my kids and I got what we needed. They did what I told them to do. I saw Robbie again. There's another family in front of him. I saw a friendly family that we know as we walked around the store. Looking to make a purchase like I have in the past on FCBD. I didn't see anything. It's too crowded to really look. We make our way to the exit. I see Robbie at the other end alone and smiling. Presley drops her books. She's awkward with her broken arm. I help her with her books. I look up. There is Robbie right in front of me smiling. I say hi. Robbie's looking at the FCBD comics in our hands before saying hi back. Robbie immediately tells us that the limit for the day is five books per person. Honestly, we had more than five each. So did everyone who walked around that table within the twenty five to thirty minutes we were there. There are no signs posted. No one said anything. No one was at the door when the other FCBD patrons walked out with their issues. Robbie says that he announced the limit earlier before we got there, but had not reminded himself or anyone else to do so again. It's not my first FCBD. Every store has there own policy for the event. Robbie locks eyes with me and smiles again. He very politely asks me and my children to please return some of our books because it would hurt his business if his store doesn't have enough FCBD issues to giveaway. The store is packed. There is a long line at the register. Other FCBD patrons are walking past us unaffected. I feel the eyes glancing at me and my children. They don't understand what's happening. I do. I've been in and out of Robbie's store for decades. I pleaded my case as I let him know what I told my children before we started to go around the FCBD table. Robbie doesn't budge. He smiles. Eyes locked and waiting. I refuse to embarrass myself or my children any further by attempting to fumble through FCBD issues. Deciding who gets what. The Robinsons have pride. We have our dignity. I have my stack. I ask Robbie if it's ok if I keep my stack and return my children's FCBD issues. It's my kids three stacks against my one and Robbie gets to keep his numbers back where he wants them. Robbie's smile broadens and he offers his hand in thanks. I shake his hand. I take the books from my kids hands, placing them back on the FCBD table for all to see. People are watching. My children still don't understand, they are 8-10 and 13 years old, but they remain calm. I walk out with my kids. Their faces said everything I needed to know as we leave. I shook Robbie's hand for the last time. If it were just me? I'm a big boy I can take it. But my children? ...Today was the last time The Robinsons would ever leave Bases Comics and Cards. My kids and I will never go back there again. Ever. Sorry Robbie... I picked up a comic released that week and the price was marked up. It had just come out two days prior but was generating some buzz so they went for the cash grab. All graphic novels are in plastic bags so you can't flip through them. Not super impressed with this shop but I'd always passed by it on the 5 freeway and never stopped in. Went in a couple months ago asking about a 1:50 comic. I told him the title and issue number, and cover artist, and even described the cover. The guy looked confused, went behind his counter and sifted through a short stack of comics... "Oh you mean this one? This one already has a buyer". Why bother showing me if it's "sold" already? Thanks for waving the carrot in front of my face like that. HAVEN'T BEEN BACK SINCE! They treat their regulars like royalty... Now (different week) just called and asked if a new issue again was in, and yes one copy, asked if cover price, yes and can hold it for me. Thanks. I love going here for the Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments. The guys that work there are nothing short of amazing & friendly! My only issue is that they need to be more strict with hygiene. There's been multiple occasions where I go & the people participating in the tournament stink so bad that even across the table I can smell them. & on another occasion there was a girl there that wasn't even participating in the tournament and she had her shoes off the entire time and it smelled like feet really bad. read more

Have several subscriptions here and if I add anything more they can go back and find all the earlier issues so your subscription will be complete. Gee it's nice to have friends who will only have nice things to say about you but your real friends will be honest with you. I love your store but it could be so much more. Rob I know you put a lot of care into your well designed visually pleasing store but I get the feeling it's more about the card than the comics. It's just two different crowds and the community feeling just isn't there. Oh , and I've been going to your shop for 15 plus years ever since Ave. J Free comic book day was a failure on that level. It's bad enough you limit your customers to two books but to have "you know who" looming over the books as an enforcer totally blew the positive vibe . My 7 year old and 10 year old were afraid to get any books and I had to assure them that I would smack the snot out of him if he said one word out of his scowling face. All in all it was a negative experience. You totally don't get the idea behind free comic book day. Those ar not your books and you should not look at them as comic books. They are cleaver and ingenious advertising and not only is limiting peeps to two books bad relations but effects future spending. Last year I followed both titles I was allowed to take and probably would have followed a couple more. So if you think about it your are also losing dollars for the comic companies themselves. I know you want everybody to get books but you are defeating the purpose. One of the points of free comic book day is to expose readers to books they would other wise not purchase. This can not happen in your store. My kids just wanted to leave but luckily I found a place around the corner that turned the day into a party and had that comic book community feeling. You should ask your customers why cause everybody knows. I forgive you if you can forgive me. read more
