I held a seasonal site here for 6 years, and what I've seen--especially in recent years--needs to be shared. At first glance, weekend campers may not notice the issues. If you're only there for a night or two and don't need help from the owners, you might never see the dysfunction that seasonal guests face. But behind the scenes, it's a different story entirely. There are several large red flags that i want to highlight. #1: The Contract Each year, seasonal campers are required to sign an annual agreement filled with clauses that are ethically questionable and potentially not even legal. (I'm happy to share documentation if requested.) The owner operates under a controlling, authoritarian mindset, where you are expected to remain silent and submissive--despite paying a premium to camp there. Voicing a concern (from something as simple as an electrical or environmental issues) risks you being removed from the campground. If you do need help or need to report a serious issue, don't expect any response via phone, text, email, or otherwise. #2: Water & Septic Yes, the other reviews are true. The water STINKS--not like well water or sulfur, but like actual raw sewage. Turning on a faucet in your camper is enough to make you gag. You do not feel comfortable showering or washing your dishes based on the smell alone. IDEM reports show that high levels of e-coli has been detected in campground water samples for at least two years. Yet, campers were never notified. That's public health negligence, and yes, the reports are publicly available on the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's website. As for the septic system, (which is a loosely used term) it is just a series of steel drums buried underground that have been there since the campground opened 50 years ago. No upgrades, no replacements. Just consider that for a moment, especially knowing the river is only about 40 yards away. #3: Invitation-Only Return Policy Your ability to return each year is based on an "invitation-only" policy. This allows the owner to keep campers walking on eggshells, afraid to say anything or stand up for themselves. It's a power trip, and it completely undermines any sense of community or trust. #4: Campground Conditions Maintenance is virtually nonexistent unless done by the seasonals themselves, who take pride in their own sites. The bath house is a disgrace--overflowing toilets, black mold in the corners, and showers in such unsanitary condition that you wouldn't wash your dog in them, let alone yourself or your children. It's teetering on being a public health hazard. Additionally, this campground is listed as "self-serve" meaning there is no camp host, nor anybody on the property if a situation were to arise. It also poses a concern of the safety of your belongings as there is no gate, people are allowed to drive in and out as they please. Final Thoughts I am not a disgruntled camper looking to cause drama. My family was well-liked within the campground community, and we had no issues with our fellow campers. This review is written because people need to know what's really happening at TRR and under the ownership of Sarah Straeter-Tackett and to proceed with caution. I have posted this review on various platforms and it is usually met with a defensive reply full of gaslighting, false claims, or "counter" reviews from her family. In fact every single positive review on this platform is from someone in her family and not anyone who actually camps there. That's the pattern. Take it all with a grain of salt. Beaches are beautiful and water is cold early in the season. The day I went there was a high wave advisory so they didn't let people in the water. Best views of the lake are from observation tower located west of the pavilion. Waves are loud if the wind is blowing from the north. You can see the City of Chicago skyline from anywhere on the beach when it is clear weather conditions. No pets on the beach and it does tend to get crowded when the weather is nice. Walking/hiking paths are available and some go the the highest points in the park where the views are breathtaking.

But we didn't mind the $12 vehicle fee just for the view. South of the park on SR-49, you'll see a Visitors Center, and if we were staying longer, it's a nice stop for local park info, campground reservations, souvenirs, and refreshments. The drive into the state park to Porter Beach takes you through thick woods, and we saw a buck crossing the road, which was a real treat and a reminder that these parks are wild enough. At the end of SR-49, there's an ornate pavilion, and it was closed due to the upcoming holiday, even the cafe and store were closed. The restrooms outside on the boardwalk were open. And we brought our lunch in from Culver's down by I-80. There were only a couple other cars during the time we were there. We pulled up and braved the blowing sand to get a look at the thrashing waters of Lake Michigan. With gusts up to 40mph from an approaching storm, the eaves were spectacular! But it was difficult to stay upright in that wind, not to mention the light sand-blasting we were getting. And we were on the road heading for a holiday visit, so we didnt stay long, only an hour or so. It's a beautiful park, even in the winter. We want to sled down the 170ft dune-canyon known as Devil's Slide!

This is not a safe campground for children. They do not keep up on maintenance on anything! Nasty shower house and pool house. Our AC unit went out in our cabin and they argued it must have been our fault because "We've been renting out this cabin to other people since May and no one has complained." Front office ladies are extremely rude. They would not honor our coupon upon check in saying they didn't believe it to be a real coupon even though they issued those coupons to us at our last stay due to some inconveniences we incurred. We decided to leave a day early and they would not issue us a refund for the night we didn't stay since "we had already used two of our three coupons upon check in." This campground is not even worth a 1* review! I do not recommend this trashy place.

And they aren't electric, they're gas...so they're loud. And to top it all off, apparently this place thrives on allowing underaged and unlicensed individuals to operate them. And they operate them well above the posted 5.5 mph limit. Stop signs also appear to be merely a suggestion. Additionally, the majority of the carts have incredibly loud sound systems installed on them. So what happens is, you have wreckless youth speeding around at all hours blaring tunes they think others care about. It is not a safe environment for walking dogs, taking a family stroll with kids, or even riding bikes. Quiet hours mean nothing, the playgrounds, and putt putt course look tired, and the "beach" is an abysmal pile of dirty sand with what appears to be toilet water for swimming. They only get the one star review because both pools are nice, the bath/shower facilities were clean, and because the staff was friendly. I can't, in good conscience, recommend this campground to anyone. Save your money and go someplace that respects real camping.

As long as you stop here early you'll be okay. They have changing rooms and concession stands as well though the food is a bit overpriced and the restrooms and changing rooms aren't the greatest but they're okay. This place is also great to go on a nice little walk too and there's plenty of people walking their dogs as well. After trying to get into the space for close to 30 minutes the Camp Host (we didn't know he was the camp host at the time) comes over and says "tight isn't it, I saw one guy destroy the e-bikes he had on the back of his rig because its so tight". There is a very easy solutation for this situation, at check-in the person should explain to those with larger rigs - OR - the camp host should have explained that the rig should be backed into this particular space. One other thing the park could do, for this particular space have a staff member lead the larger rigs to the space taking them around the loop so they actually back into the space

The facts of this experience indicate that management is not only careless, but "intentionally" not honoring customer reservations. 1. Intentional mismanagement. 2. Disrespect of the customer's time. This was a kayak trip with my two daughters for Father's Day. I made reservations 2 days in advance and - SINCE WE HAD TO DRIVE 2 HOURS TO GET THERE - even called twice that day to make sure they had all my details documented to avoid any problems or conflicts. 1. My reservations were scheduled for 12 noon. 2. The only river trip they were offering typically takes 4 hours. 3. They don't start launching kayaks until 9 am. 4. THEREFORE, it is impossible to launch a kayak at 9 am and have it complete the trip by 12 noon (since that's only a 3-hour span of time). When I got there, they did acknowledge having my reservation, but all of their kayaks had already been launched that morning. 1. We witnessed another customer's frustration of having PRE-PAID for his trip and they did not have his reserved watercraft available either and had to issue a refund. Everybody has a bad day once in a while, so I decided to wait "as they requested." 2. A few times they asked if I wanted to use a tube or canoe instead of kayaks, which I specifically didn't and is one of the reasons I made sure to secure reservations. (In hindsight, I see this was their chosen tactic of dealing with the situation rather than communicating how unlikely it will be that 3 kayaks arrive in a reasonable timeframe, especially considering the river was low and moving slower than normal.) 3. AFTER PATIENTLY WAITING 2.5 HOURS (and having time to do the math, realizing it was technically impossible to have a kayak and that - being a campground that's been running river trips for years is OBVIOUSLY aware of this math), I expressed my frustration "without cussing or raising my voice" to the mid/late twenty-something pregnant lady they had running the kayak booth, which also happened to have several teenagers lounging around it, presumably summer help taking a lunch break. As I'm about to leave, an older male representative (presumably management) approaches me about my frustration. Instead of apologizing or offering any concessions for what is blatantly their failure - and most likely intentional mismanagement of customer reservations - HE ACCUSSES ME OF MISCONDUCT and says those are minors at the kayak booth and they don't need me yelling at them... Unbelievable. 1. I was not directing anything towards the teenagers, I only had an interaction with the older pregnant lady in which I "did not use profanity or raise my voice." 2. If the people running the booth responsible for distributing kayaks and customer interaction are not competent, they should not be in that position in the first place. 3. Since management doesn't hold those people accountable for scheduling, then it falls on management for making such obvious problems that put those people in a position of having to deal with frustrated customers. Perhaps the best part is, when I told him that I will be writing a bad review, he motioned towards the other customers cars and said, "You see all this, we don't give a shit about your bad review!" Well it's not for them, it's for the people they would so casually and intentionally disrespect without remorse. It's for you.
