My favorite musical, Fiddler on the Roof was played here, so I knew I couldn't miss it. After searching high and low in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin for closer productions. My love for this musical brought me to Bastrop (and I'm glad it did!) I loved how they performed Fiddler on the Roof! It was phenomenal!!! It matched exactly from the 1971 movie. I have this movie on VHS and watch it every month because I love it so much!! Every scene was as if I was watching the movie. Lisa Holcomb is an amazing director and trained the performers well. If you're a history buff or admire antiques, you'll love the Bastrop Opera House built in 1889. The parking can be limited in Downtown and in historic district, so I took an Uber from the Airbnb I stayed at. During intermission, I went to check out the ladies restroom and it was severely cramped. It reminded me of an old church restroom: three stalls with doors so close to the toilet. Whether you sit or squat, your knees are at the door. A primary sink and a line out the door. So, there's some discomfort there! I want to mention that the seating inside the opera house is comfortable, but the chairs are close together. I reserved seat E1 which is the last seat of the row, so each time someone from the middle needed to leave. I had to get up to let them out. That was a bit much. Seats sell out quickly, but if you travel solo you can find something last minute. Anyways, I'll be attending the upcoming show of Rent (another one of my favorite musical) here. I wanted to see Dial M for Murder by Alfred Hitchcock, but I'll have to catch it another time. read more

Local theatres are to be supported, SUPPORT BASTROP OPERA HOUSE it's an amazing venue with amazing shows and an amazing community

My wife (seems to be a theme) digs the movie Clue, one of her favorites but sadly is not a fan of the board game. I found this local opera house and play almost by accident. I had overheard some people at a play at Paramount in Austin talk about it once but never gave it much thought beyond that. I was excited to find this and the host was super nice. This musical plays like the board game and the killer, weapon, and room are different every time, audience members are picked to select one of each card, Shana, the wife, was chosen, which I might have had a hand in. The actors and actresses were all great and could sing. Mr. Green was my favorite of the ones we saw that night. The place was nice and well renovated. We had bought a show that comes with a dinner and a bottle of wine at every table. Now the downside, there was some issues, never found out what but dinner started about 10 to 15 mins late. Maybe more, but as each table got up and headed to the front to get their chicken, rice, and green beans that took some time. They had tea, sweet and non sweet you could drink the whole time. They were very polite and said sorry for starting late, made it sound like it almost never happened, I felt bad for them as they were trying. So the whole thing started about 15 mins late overall. You could play along with the clues they gave to solve the murder! It was fun, the food didn't last long, by the time my table, which was last got up there it was mostly just some chicken and rice. No green beans but I got an extra roll! The songs and singers were on point and the place did very well considering something or someone knocked it off schedule. The playing along was fun though some of the clues were not that helpful. I got the killer but not the room or weapon. Still it is a good time and I suggest it to anyone who wants something different and fun. The cast talked to a few people after and Ms. Peacock my wife's fave in the movie took a picture with her. read more

visiting from out of state and went to see a play here. Great little small town theatre/opera house. Snacks, stage, outside building, staff, all great! I must say we really enjoyed the evening here! Such a small town feel. I love coming for shows here. It really brings the community together. It's also nice when they have plays that are holiday geared, it really helps to put you in the mood, especially during the Christmas season!! Such a great thing to do with the family:-) I gave 4 stars because some shows are better than others (as is anything). OZ was great!! read more

First time here. After we walked in I was told that they don't allow weapons. I am a Texas LTC holder which permits me to carry open or concealed in establishments like this, unless the establishment posts a legally sufficient sign. There is no such sign. I told the manager that without a sign she cannot enforce her policy; however, in the interest of cooperation I would remove my sidearm. Next time we come, if we do, I will not be so cooperative. Maybe the police can explain the law to them. Oh. And when I came back in I discovered that we were the only patrons who did NOT have playbills already in our chairs! REALLY!!?? read more

Lovely theater in the heart of downtown Bastrop. I've seen two performances and have not been disappointed yet!

The US was dotted with local theaters just like this a hundred years ago, but not many remain. S and I planned a weekend getaway to Bastrop for a flamenco performance featuring world-class artists in a theater built in 1889. We weren't sure we had the right address, just off old Main St. The building next door was under renovation, as was the front of the theater. But there was the poster in the window and the historic plaque. Inside is completely different. A tiny but plush lobby, ticket window and concessions. Around the corner and into the familiar house. Flat floor, high ceiling, high stage (4 ft?). But remarkably renovated! Everything like it must have looked originally. Well, no candle foot lights of course. Comfortable seats. Congrats to the non-profit org! Pre-show a gentleman announced that they have just received national recognition. No details on their facebook page, and their website is hopelessly out of date. Then he introduced the producer, his daughter. Charming touch that added to the small-town feel. The sold-out program itself was excellent and very well received. Only criticism, uneven lighting. Excellent sound. All of the dancers, singers and musicians were outstanding. Leaving, we were reminded to step carefully around the construction area out front. I'm sure the'll have that cleaned up soon. read more

Pretty cool venue. All plays I heard were volunteer and staffed by adults and kids. The show was fun, we saw Wizard of Oz. The refreshments were cheap at $1 per item, most things and we had a great time. We will come back again. read more

It's hard to say enough good things about Bastrop Opera House. My family has been involved with this magical place for over a decade. One aspect of the theater is the show, and they work hard to put on great shows, but an even a bigger part is the number of people who work to bring the shows to the community. People fall in love with theater there. read more

This is the most adorable little theatre you will ever find and definitely a treasure in the middle of historic downtown Bastrop. You will go back in time when you enter the opera house that was built at the end of the 1800's. Though the building itself is older, this little theatre still produces great entertainment. While having a facility like this in Bastrop could add much to the quality of life, we had an extremely negative experience! The kids gave their all in a difficult situation. No computer at checkin led to initial confusion for seating. As other Facebook reviews noted, we also were waiting 2 hours for food. The host gave helpful historical information, however could not be heard by the folks at our table by the entrance. A simple wireless mic and some photos on a screen would have received a more attentive audience. The colored Christmas trees to show the kids our menu selection confused the kids more than the audience. They were still having to ask everyone what they had ordered. For the parents and family members of the performers, the singing would have been acceptable, much like you'd see at a local church. This was NOT a performance that justified a fee! We spent $70 for the "show" and received cold food much later than most of the room. Some folks randomly received desert, but not at our table. We will not support this effort without resolving these negative audience experiences. read more
