We came here for a family day out and while we had been here before, it was the former teen's first time. They had a few new things and it was less crowded then our previous time, You go through at your own pace and while there are a few big things, it is mostly cool smaller things you see and do and they make the most of a small area. If it has one issue it is that for the cost it is very small and a few things are just variations on mirror copies which is neat but after the 4th one that is in a similar vein it is a little old. SHANA SAYS: Museum is fun and informative! Easy to navigate. Helpful staff. There are some really cool things like true mirrors and puzzles to do. Some classic 3D Art and the magic eye pictures. There is a room that spins around you and throws off your balance quite a bit. It is fun, but this will most likely be the last time. It is not really a repeat place as only minor things seems to change. We were here last in July 2023 and very little has been added or changed. It is fun to see once or show to a new person then repeat viewings don't add much for the price. I've done the museum of illusions in San Diego, and the one in Vegas. This Austin one I wasn't too impressed with compared to the others. For example, the card table mirror exhibit... Was out in the open, so you couldn't get a good photo without people and things in the background. I would add however, that you need to go in with the sense of wonderment and pose pictures, get down on the ground, have some laughs and let yourself feel like a kid again. We visited the Museum of Illusions in Austin and spent about an hour exploring. For four people (two of us with military discount), we paid around $120 including tax. The military discount brought the price down to $24 plus tax per person, which was a nice perk. The museum is located in the Domain, right across from the Domain Farmers Market area. It started to get noticeably busy shortly after 11:00 AM, so I'd definitely recommend arriving early for the best experience and photo opportunities. The exhibits are fun and interactive, and there's plenty to engage both adults and kids. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful -- especially when it came to taking photos or guiding us through some of the illusions. That personal touch made the experience better. While visiting Austin for a weekend getaway with my family we decided to check this place out . We have a Hopscotch in San Antonio that is similar to this place. There are a few cool and unique experiences here! Amazing to see how physics and proper placement of mirrors and other things can create such awesome illusions. Believe them when warned about the tunnel. It definitely creates the illusion that you are moving or falling even though you are still. Can be a bit nauseating so beware. I had really high hopes for this place because I saw so many advertisements for it before our trip to Austin, and I can say I am throughly disappointed. First of all the tickets are very pricey for how tiny this place is. The attractions are pretty cool for photo ops I will give them that. However it took us maybe 30 minutes to walk to the entire building. I visited with my 5 and 2 year old boys. They enjoyed it and were having a great time until about 10 mins into our trip. My 5 year old ran from one of the attractions to me to tap on my leg and show me something he thought was cool. An employee approached him and very sternly told him absolutely no running in the museum. Which is completely understandable and I told my son to use walking feet next time to which he was receptive. Skip forward about 20 mins and 2 year old wanted to go into one of the attractions for a photo op. There was a line and my 2 year old was struggling to wait (he is has autism and is non verbal) he was crying but he wanted to do it so badly he stuck it out until it was his turn. When it was his turn to step up into the attraction, the same staff member who told my son not to run, stopped my 2 year old from getting onto the attraction. I picked him up to try to stop him because I thought he was asking us to wait. He in fact was not. He did not want to let him up there. Once he agreed to let him on the attraction, my son approached the concrete wall at the back of the photo op and put his hands on it. This was met with panic from the employee saying he can't do that making it a very big deal (when other people were posing and touching the wall) I then picked up my son and posed for a photo while my husband snapped a picture of us. I will attach the photo here for reference, the employee was standing in our photo, arms cross, angry. After my son got the photo he wanted I told my husband let's leave. I had absolutely zero desire to be in a place that supposed to be "family friendly" but continued to make my kids feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. It may seem like a small inconvenience but this place was REAALLLYYYY not cool enough for the staff to treat my children poorly. I would not recommend this place to anyone. There are SO MANY places in Austin that are much cooler, much more fun, and way less money than this place. read more

The staff was helpful and explained the exhibits and helped with capturing photos. It took About an hour with a crew of 9 people plus a baby to get through the four sections. The kids all were happy and seemed to enjoy themselves. We bought tickets online and signed the waiver before going down check in was quick. Great to do once. Located in the domain and thankfully extremely close to a parking garage, Museum of Illusions is a place where the whole family can have fun, spend quality time together and be mentally challenged! My daughters were down from Missouri and we had a list of places to try but Illusions won out based on our desire to satisfy our curiosities. The staff working there are extremely helpful while giving much needed instructions while never being to far away to assist in each exhibit and take pics! Also, when you walk in there's a place to buy above average priced swag but that can be done at the end of your "journey." Finally, this goes without saying but I might as well mention it. Make sure you're ready to take a LOT of pictures as the art features are mesmerizing and you'll want to share the memories. I like the reservation aspect of the tour as I found we didn't have to compete with a lot of people to enjoy their offerings. I believe I had four or five other small parties at various stages in the museum so there was never competition or a feeling of being rushed. That said there are a lot of different "rooms," most with several items to engage with or figure out. Speaking of "figuring out" there are plaques by the exhibits describing how many of the illusions work however there are also small puzzles; think rubix cube type toys to solve. A small warning some of the attractions can produce motion sickness, ie the tunnel and some can invoke fear of heights. This should be self-explanatory when approaching the area therefore I advise discretion if it's an issue for you. Most of the attractions are mirror based or optical illusions so if you're an analytical thinker there's a lot for you try figure out. Overall, the place is clean and safe. Now the website says "plan for an hour" however my party of three took roughly 30 minutes, with some attractions warranting more time than others. The only negative aspect I would say is I wish there were more pieces of art however what they do have is extremely exciting and fun. I think the price is a little high but who can place a value on a day with the family or friends in a constructive manner that utilizes the mind in creative ways? If you live in Austin or a guest this place is a must visit. My family all enjoyed the experience and I believe you will too. read more

We had so much fun here! We are museum people so when we had our Japanese foreign exchange high school student come visit us for the weekend, we knew we wanted to check out some museums with her! She loved it here! This is definitely a great place for kids and adults. Maybe not infants they won't really get it. It's convenient because it's right at the domain. You can easily do shopping and then pop in for a fun time at the museum. The different illusions are really fun. They have the chair illusion which I thought was cool. It was hard to understand but there are people to help you see it. There was also the I love you so much mural which ended up looking really cool. I would share pictures, but I can't really share pictures of our foreign exchange student since she's a minor. I did share a few pictures that did not show her face. The museum is pretty short. It depends on how fast you want to get through it. We ended up spending about an hour there, because we just had so much fun looking at all the different illusions. April 21, 2023 I live in Galveston and had been visiting in Cedar Park and decided on my way back to the island I'd make a pit stop to this museum. Houston had one years ago that I went to so, i kinda knew what to expect. I was solo which makes it impossible to take photos and catch the art of illusion but, staff is more than willing to help. This one had a few things that Houston had but the rest was different. I enjoyed myself a lot and appreciated the strangers and the staff for the help with photos FYI when I was on my cell trying to check in to the museum on Facebook; the location didn't come up. This is a pretty new addition to The Domain and is relatively small by museum standards but they use the space well with many small rooms with all kinds of optical illusions and amusing tricks. Admission is $24 for adults which is a bit expensive since you can easily go through everything in under an hour, but it's probably worth it for the fascinating experiences. I recommend bringing at least one friend or family member since many experiences require two people. And although there are plenty of museum staff happy to take pictures for you, it's great having a friend who will take the perfect profile pic for you. Lots of the illusions involve mirrors, but there are also geometric illusions, light tricks and I love the holograms on the walls that remind me of the 1980s in Sharper Image. One of my favorites is a completely stationary bridge going through a tunnel that rotates around you and makes you completely unable to walk a straight line and feels like the whole building is moving. There are puzzles to play, selfie stations galore, and plenty of information on each illusion you're observing. There's also a small gift shop in the lobby with some fun items for sale! read more

We waited until family was in town to visit because I had been nervous my 3 and 7 year old would whine their way through and the ticket price wouldn't be worth it. Turns out the 7 year old LOVED it and could have stayed longer than the hour we were there. The almost-4 year old hadn't slept well, so she started getting a bit fussy halfway through but was still easily distracted by the "exhibits". A staff member checks you in and gives an introduction, and when they tell you to watch your balance, take them seriously. Some of the exhibits are particularly disorienting even to those of us with excellent balance (ahem...Vortex I'm looking at you). You then move through at your own pace. You definitely shouldn't come alone, and I think most exhibits require a group of three to really receive the full experience- usually two create the illusion while the third witnesses it. My mom was able to navigate well with her cane, as well. Some illusions are better than others, and you may need to lift little ones up to see some of them. Definitely bring a phone to take pictures...we had almost as much fun just looking through our pictures afterwards and reliving it. A great photo-op location and fun family outing. This place is pretty much a giant photo op. There are a few rooms to wander through with 1 - 3 things to do in each one. Some attractions triggered my motion sickness, one being the tunnel, but the staff was very friendly and offered to turn it off spin mode to go through it. They also had suggestions for how to pose with different parts of the museum. But one of the photos you had to lay down on the ground for which is dirty due to everyone walking on it. On a hot summer day there was a large number of people there and everyone wound up in the last room at the same time which got very loud and crowded. Overall, it's probably more for young kids because there were screaming groups of kids running all over the museum. Such a fun and interactive museum. If you want to take some great pictures with your friends and have an interactive experience this is a fun spot. Staff members were friendly and helpful. The vortex tunnel is so fun we went through about 12 times. The tickets are a bit pricey at 25 dollars but it was a blast.
