I cannot recommend Bateman's Bicycle Store. I bought a very expensive custom built bike from them which has caused me great stress and no end of problems. Despite being crystal clear that I wanted to ride upright. I could not easily reach the handlebars and was crunching forward awkwardly. I returned to the store many times for unsuccessful adjustments. Finally Batemans said nothing that could be done. I also had to return for other shoddy work: the basket was mounted so close to seat, it was not possible to sit on it; in one unsuccessful attempt to fix the main problem, the shifter was twisted so it could not be reached and the brakes were angled too far down to access; one of the tires kept going flat; the kick stand interfered with bike function etc. As a last resort, we went to Bloomfield Bicycle Company in Prince Edward County which had been very helpful with our old bikes. I learned that the medium bike frame sold to me by Bateman's is too large/long for my height. Bloomfield were able to replace the handlebars with ones I could reach sitting upright. They also said the grips were too long and large for my hands, and had been installed improperly. They replaced the plastic white clip ties holding the basket which they thought were dangerous and could snap with black metal clamps. It was very time consuming and costly to go to Prince Edward County since we had to stay overnight in and pay for accommodation. But I can now ride my bike comfortably. I called them when I got my bike from someone from BUNZ. the first thing I said is "I got a bike. I don't know anything about bike. help me." then, they helped me. I knew that I needed my grip and saddle to be replaced so I told them about that and booked an appointment. When I showed up at Bateman's, they asked me what needed to be fixed and I repeated the whole "I know nothing. help." within a minute, they figured out that my tire, gear cable and break also needed some upgrade. I said okay but also told them that I'm budget conscious. they absolutely respected my wish and never judged me. upon my pickup, they raised my seat, explained how gears worked and just made me feel welcomed in the Toronto cycling community. and holy ginger snap, the very first ride after the tune up felt AMAZING!!!!! Batemans bicycle company serves up a bunch of assholes. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They do not know customer service whatsoever. I used to come here when Forest worked here. He was the best! Caring, compassionate, genuinely interested in helping and he knew what a smile was. Since he relocated, I've received nothing but arrogance and pompousness from Bateman's. It used to be a co-owned shop the second, former co-owner was much nicer than the current owner there. I cannot remember his name, he was friendly and very willing to educate and assist. I believe he moved to BC. Not only can coming into a bike shop be intimidating, all the more when the guys dont smile. Most recently a tire was taken in, the tube had popped and the tire needed to be replaced. A tire was purchased for $20 and a new tube close to $10. The tire replacement looked like something that Canadian Tire would sell. In other words, super cheap quality! Especially for Bateman's, which boasts top of the line. Over an hour was spent trying to get this tire on the rim. OVER AN HOUR! and no help was offered because labour would be charged. And paying for something that could be done on one's own, was annoying. For someone that doesnt change tires too often, it tends to take longer. Yet, OVER AN HOUR, for a tire that was communicated would fit the rim... yeah okay! That's absolutely ridiculous! After trying for well over that hour mark, the choice to visit another bike shop in the area was made. There, a new tire was purchased. It was put on the rim, in less than 15 minutes and the tire looked like something you'd actually want on your bike. A German made, delta cruiser plus, with phenomenal grip. The man at the bike shop didn't even bother trying to put the cheap tire on the rim. It wasnt worth his efforts. The other crappy tire was returned to Bateman's. And this is a review on behalf of someone else: Travelled to batemans to purchase a new tire tube and possibly a tire (pending recommendation). I had full intentions of installing it there myself- brought my tools and arrived early (first one). An elderly man arrived shortly after and we engaged in light friendly conversation as we awaited the bike shop to open. Coincidentally we chatted about ETIQUETTE & how much it's lacking in the world today. Plain and simple human to human friendly etiquette. This LACK was certainly proven at Batemans! The first personnel to assist seemed nice to tend to my needs and enter the shop to retrieve the products I required. THEIR SELECTION! I had no way to compare product or price. They were simply about business and NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE OR CARE AT ALL!  Due to covid, customers are not permitted to enter (understandable) I proceeded with attempting to install the new bike tube + tire outside. In the middle of installation he returned to inform my total amount due. He then shared that he needed my card to take back into the store. I WAS TO HAND OFF MY CARD TO AN EMPLOYEE TO PAY.....THEY WERE TO TAP  MY CARD. Being in a pinch I shrugged and paid, but realized it was a messed up method!  I remained outside the shop trying to install this tire for over an hour! I was determined since I had a day full of errands ahead. A kind customer who had experience installing tires also attempted to help and STILL it didn't work! I then approached a different employee (another male) expressing that I had been adjusting the tire for over an hour & I was seeking to confirm it was the right tire size and that it was installed safely. The tire sizing was just not making sense, even though the numbers added up. They said "Yes right size, no and I need to keep massaging it in." They walked off. After continuing for 20 more minutes, I GAVE UP!! Hoping to ride off, I ended up walking my bike back home! Since it was in an unfinished & unsafe state for riding. I ended up going to a different bike shop only to discover that Batemans sold me a cheap quality tire Made in Taiwan which is the reason it was not fitting properly and likely contributed to the reason why none of them wanted to assist. Thanks assholes!  I understand the males at Bateman's are busy, I understand their time needs to go to jobs that are paying them for their labour. HOWEVER, communication and friendly customer service go a long way! They use to have it really going on here. Now they have modernized and no longer want to deal with you if you are a person or over the phone. Press 1 for this, press 2 for that etc... Regardless of what you press you eventually get told to send an email for a quicker response send at info@... etc. however then they say due to the high volume of calls it could be a week before you get a returned email. Renting a bike from Bateman's was super easy. Unfortunately we arrived with only 2 hours until close so all they had were road bikes. Bikes come with locks and a helmet. The woman who helped us out was very friendly; however, I had asked for a map of the city and any advice on where to bike. I would have liked it if they had shared more on specific routes to take especially since they knew we were from out of town. General travel advice: Biking around a town guarantees the most encompassing experience of any city, especially Toronto which is extremely bike-able and walkable. In a little less than 2 hours, we were able to cover a lot of ground! read more

I had the best experience at Bateman's Bicycle Company. I was coming to Toronto from NYC and wanted to rent a road bike to do longer rides. I called the company the day before I arrived and Rob helped to put a bike on reserve for me. Was really helpful about everything - what kind of pedals, size of bike, etc. I showed up at the shop and they tuned up the bike and had me riding through the streets in no time. Rob even put lights on my bike because I was doing a sunset ride that evening. Everyone in the shop was really friendly and the bike was perfect. I do not recommend this place (Flagship store). Poor accountability and sense of ownership of their customer's bicycles. Brought in my vintage road bike to replace the rear brakes as they tend to not reset after braking. They told me that they will call my phone number after they are done repairing after an ETA of 1 day or two. 1. Didn't get a call for a week, had to call them to see if I got my bike fixed. They didn't bother to call my number. 2. When I came to pick up my bike, they just changed the brake lines and tightened the bolts with the same old callipers. The issue is now worse than before, as the brakes now contact the rims. Not in a rideable condition. 3. One of the guys working there throws an excuse that having new callipers will not 'solve' the issue as my bike is a vintage model. Are you guys serious? This is extremely unprofessional. 4. I ask what callipers they have in-house to get it resolved, and turns out they do not carry one and have to order one. These guys seem to not care when I ask what types are available and the price range, giving me a cold shoulder. Bottom-line, they should've made the bike in a rideable condition when I came to retrieve it. Went to a different nearby bike shop (Curbside Cycle) which solved the issue without changing the brakes with a complimentary wheel truing service at a lower price, in 2 hours! read more

I've always found the staff at this store very rude and not very well informed. I wouldn't have gone back, but I was told by another bike store to bring it there as they were a dealer for the brand of rim I was trying to repair. I brought in the spoke and the nipple to replace the nipple because it was cracked. This type is internal and inverted for a carbon fibre rim. The employee went and asked the mechanic for advice and she came back with a standard pull through nipple. If I used the peice they gave me the hard edges would have eventually cracked my rim. Good thing I know more than the mechanic. Sometimes it's better to say I don't know. On another occasion, I brought in a healthy spoke to have 30 cut for a folding bike rim. The gentlemen I dealt with was extremely rude and I was made to think I know nothing even a little stupid. When I tried to rebuild the rim every spoke was about an inch too short. Now I have 30 useless spokes. Apparently this rude guy needs to pay better attention to what he's doing. Overall, I'm shocked they're still in business. read more

I've visited at least 3 bike shops in Toronto in the past few weeks and this one was hands down the best. My trip here started after I was looking to buy a particular rack and basket combination. My neighbourhood bike shop was sold out of the basket, so I looked online for other options. Bateman's prices can't be beat. They were $10-$25 less for pretty much every item I had already purchased this spring or planned to purchase (basket, rack, kids helmet, brakes, etc.). I placed my order online and was expecting to pick the items up the following weekend (after 5 business days), just in time for Mother's Day. Unfortunately there was a bit of a shipment mix-up resulting in one my two items not being available by then. I found another nearby bike shop that had the missing item in stock, so I went into Bateman's to pick up the other item from my order, with the intention of asking them to cancel the missing item. When I went into the store and explained my predicament, the super friendly/helpful staff went out of their way to find a solution for me. The customer service from this store is seriously amazing. From the helpful staff going above and beyond, to the quick responses to email/twitter inquiries. Definitely the best retail experience I've had in recent memory and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone . read more

I went here this afternoon so I could pick up a new helmet. I wanted something a little less dorky than my current, more traditional helmet. I know there's nothing 'dorky' about safety, but let's be real, folks, I am an attractive woman! I should have an attractive helmet! The selection here is smaller than the likes of Curbside Cycles (though bigger than Pete's) but the staff are lovely. The guy who helped me ignored the phone as it rang and rang (and rang and rang!) just to dig around in boxes and locate more styles for me to find. At one point I said, "You can get that if you want...?" and he said something along the lines of 'what makes you think I want?' So yeah, definitely a lot of focus and attention on the customer. He didn't judge me for wanting a 'fun' helmet either. I was distinctly afraid of this because if I were a bikespert, I would judge people like me. The only thing that was a less than perfect was that he wouldn't put the helmet I wanted on hold for an hour. He said it was their policy for when it's the last one and with it being bike season, helmets sell quick, but it was still kind of a bummer. I was on a bit of a tour to check out helmets and splash guards all around the area so I was planning on shopping around a bit. I snapped it up as the price was reasonable and I was wary of someone beating me to it (this has happened twice in the last couple of weeks and I'm still grieving). One last thing: I spotted some cute (see! See why I am surprised he didn't judge me??) locks and asked what they were like. The sales guy had no qualms telling me they were pretty rubbish and really only for children's bikes or secondary locks. That honesty was nice since he probably could have taken me for a total sucker (pro tip: I am a total sucker). read more

I bought my bike last August from Bateman's and have found myself back in the shop a number of times since then. What I love most about Bateman's is that it's more than a bike shop - it's a community. And it's a community that I am super happy to be a part of. Here's why: Last summer, I spent a considerable amount of time going to various bike shops in the city to buy a new bike. I went to all the usual suspects and test rode a number of bikes. After finding a bike I liked quite a bit, I searched for it online to see all the stores in the city that carried it, and to see if any store had it on sale. Enter Bateman's. I found out that Bateman's did indeed carry the Norco Cityglide, that they had it on sale, and that the shop was just a few blocks away from my place! When I arrived, I was helped by one of their super friendly staff members who took the time to let me test ride a number of bikes. He helped me narrow in on what I was looking for, and find all the right bells and whistles to go along with my Cityglide. It was really refreshing to be able to talk about biking without the usual pretentiousness that all too often accompanies the bike store vibe. I was able to leave feeling confident in all my purchases and excited to keep in touch. Sure enough, I was back in the shop quicker than expected when my bike seat and post were stolen while parked out on the street. I went back to Bateman's to see if they could help me pick out a new seat, and they did me one better - they felt so bad that my seat was stolen so soon after buying that they hooked me up with a brand new seat and post for next to nothing! Since that time, I've returned to the shop for indoor winter cycling classes (which are awesome by the way and highly recommended!!), to go on an outdoor group ride, to browse longingly at their Brooks gear and cute baskets, for beers with the staff, and to peruse their cross bikes (because apparently just one bike no longer does it for me). I'm happy to say that I've always felt welcome at Bateman's and have been able to learn more about cycling and bikes in general from the kind folks working at the shop. It's the type of cycling community I want to be a part of, and I'd encourage anyone looking to buy a bike to check this place out. Bonus points: the shop has the world's cutest puppy. Not a fan of pretentious bike snob staff? Don't worry, you won't find any here. After buying bikes from multiple shops around the city, I've come to the conclusion that Bateman's is hands down the best shop in town. Here's why: 1) They have a great selection of bikes at a variety of price points. 2) They have great prices for accessories and any servicing (be sure to take advantage of their annual $30 early bird price for tune-ups). 3) The staff! These guys (and gals) are super helpful and friendly. They help you find a bike that is suitable for your needs without being pushy or trying to get you on a more expensive bike. I bought a new bike today and Mike was so helpful at suggesting multiple bikes to try that would suit my needs. He was extremely patient with letting me test ride so many bikes (some of them more than once). Never once did I feel like my indecisiveness and multiple questions were annoying him. I ended up buying my dream bike at a price that can't be beat. Oh and did I mention that when my boyfriend brought his bike in to have fenders installed, it wasn't quit ready for pick up when we showed up. They apologized and suggested that we go across the street to grapefruit moon for a drink while they got the bike ready. When we went to pay the bill for our 2 pints, our server told us that the guys from Batemans called and took care of the bill! Amazing right? Bateman's, you're incredible. I picked up my new bike from you guys today and I am beyond impressed. I came in looking for something to meet my commuter needs, that would improve my ability to mission out on longer rides as well. Rob recommended me the KHS Flite 100, which I pretty much fell in love with right away... the "ride-ability" at least. Being a huge weirdo though, I wasn't a huge fan of the frame colours that were offered with the bike. Rob was really kind and offered to switch out the frame (at no cost) to something that would better suit my aesthetic needs (and is actually an overall better frame). In the end, I ended up with a Flite 100 fork, wheel set, etc., with a Soma Rush frame. I am beyond happy with the finished product. Thanks again to Rob and everyone else that helped out. Bateman's is a tiny bike shop tucked away in the just off Bathurst in the Annex. This is a reliable spot for bike maintenance and repairs. The few times I've been here I've been very happy with the price, turn around time, and quality of service. In peak biking season, when other shops have a huge backlog for service, Bateman's seems to have much quicker turn around times. Most of the servicing is done outside or in a garage beside the shop. The shop itself is tiny and I've never actually been inside, but they do seem to squeeze some bikes and accessories in there. Just a good, honest, and reliable place to get your bike serviced. read more

Even though I no longer live in the Annex, I still go back to Bateman's for all my cycling needs. I bought a shiny new bike from Bateman's last spring. The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable, patiently showing me their selection of bikes that fit my needs/price range. I ended up going with a Norco Cityglide and I couldn't be happier with it. They also gave me a free helmet and took my old beater bike on consignment to sell in their used bike sale. Score #1: I didn't have to go through the trouble of selling it myself; score #2: I used the proceeds to buy a new bike pump and some other goodies! The few times that I've brought my bike in for a tune-up/minor repairs, the staff helpfully told/showed me how to best take care of my bike, in a not-at-all-pretentious way. I admittedly only know the bare minimum about bike maintenance, so I really appreciate being able to ask for advice without feeling like I'm being patronized. This means a lot as I have had some not so good experiences with other bike shops, like one joint in Kensington. I have bought two commuter bikes here. One the KHS Urbans soul. The bike itself was simple, and cheap. worked well. I also had them order a touring bike for me that was not in stock 'khs tr101'. The service was great. (I feel like the mechanics rushed putting it together but when I raised some issues, the owner went and fixed everything himself. As for the bike, I biked from Seattle to Mexico with it and use it every day as my commuter AND I HAVEN'T EVEN HAD A FLAT TIRE YET...I'm still amazed... read more

I've been to a handful of bike shops in Toronto and none of them have really made me want to go back - all except for Bateman's. They were very friendly, did everything they could to try and troubleshoot what was wrong with my bike (of course, it wasn't making the same noise in the shop as it was when I'm riding around), and they easily found a replacement bash guard that had broken off. They didn't even end up charging me for anything, and when I asked how much for the replacement part (which had come off another used bike) they just said to throw some money in the tip jar. Yesterday, I bought the first bike I've owned since I was a teenager (I'm 25 now), and Bateman's made it a very happy, easy experience. I'm a total newbie to this, but Forrest, the store manager, answered all my questions about the bike and accessories, and didn't make me feel foolish when I asked him to switch out the black seat and handlebar grips for the pretty brown ones (they look much nicer!). I ended up with a Norco Yorkville commuter bike ($369), which is perfect for me because it has the top bar that curves down--I wear a lot of dresses, so this is important! Forrest also helped me pick out a nice rear basket (with stretchy netting across the top to prevent things from falling out), and installed it right away. I got a good helmet on sale for $50 too, which I am very happy with. On top of the great service, Bateman's also offers one year of free tune-ups when you buy your bike from them! I've bought two bikes from these folks over the years. Great service, good advice. I do ultra-long distance cycling and the bike they recommended was perfect for it: a steel bike with Brooks saddle and SON dynamo hub to power a Lumotec front lamp, and a rear light. Very knowledgeable staff that go cycling a lot and even race. The few times I've had an issue with a product purchased here, I had no problem either getting a refund or getting it replaced. On top of all that, they have spin classes to keep you in riding shape over the winter. Excellent layout and machines. As well, they have rentals that are well-priced and well-maintained. Several out of town friends of mine have rented from here and all had good bikes and no issues. So again, I highly recommend this place for all riders, except for the most elite, as there are shops that cater to just that level of rider. read more

Bateman's is the penultimate neighbourhood bike shop. They do everything a local shop should do. They can do repairs; install items like fenders, racks and lights; sell you things like locks and helmets and pumps; and, they can sell you bikes. They have a tiny retail shop space which is more like a mechanics stand with a scattering of items for sale than it is like the shopping Nirvana of Holt Renfrew or Harry Rosen. In the summer they have a nice little buzz about them, as they operate a lot of their business outside - bikes for sale on the boulevard, a temporary tent on a driveway for repairs, and wheels and more bikes crammed in a tiny adjoining garage. The staff are nice, not pushy and the shop has a vibe that it is owned and run by a couple of friends who really wanted to work with bikes all the time (I don't know if this is actually true...but it feels like it). If you're looking at high end MTB or road bikes, they can likely order a couple of them out of the lines they carry, but they don't have a lot of eye candy on display to get the drool reflex flowing, and don't specialize in this area enough to represent a lot of brands, models and sub-category items (e.g. trials, triathalon, downhill). They will however, offer you personalized service, and help with a decent selection of commuter, cruiser or low to mid-range bikes. read more

I got a flat tire and popped in to get it fixed, thinking I would have to leave it there for a day or two, since the store was packed and the service area was very busy. Got my first bike there. Bateman's delivers top-notch service from all their employees. They don't have a "too cool for you" attitude that permeates from some other specialty bike stores. I came in with two other friends and they took the time to talk to all of us and match a bike with each of our different needs. Incredibly patient and wonderful to deal with. On the same day I bought my bike, I got a flat tire. I sent an email to them and got an incredibly quick response. I brought my bike in and they fixed it up for free. We rented four bikes for the Ride for Heart this past weekend; three of them were hybrid and one was a road bike. All came with a bike lock and helmet (if needed). The bikes were in perfect working order for us - clean (brand new looking honestly) and worked very efficiently. Service was also friendly and helpful! The bikes were all ready to go when we got there and we were offered to have them properly sized for us. This was our second time renting from Bateman's and it has definitely become our go to place for bike rentals. read more

Bateman's recently took over Bathurst Cycle just up the street on Bathurst St. Took my bike in for a tune-up and the guy I was dealing with told me that it would be ready in 7-10 days as they were very busy (and had a promotion on at the time). It has now been well over 2 weeks with no definitive end in site. They are very apologetic, but appear to be in over their heads at the moment. Bateman's is the quintessential local, neighbourhood bike shop. Friendly, knowledgeable staff that don't have attitude; even though they're all serious bike fanatics, they are never condescending or patronising. I really appreciate their taking the time to listen to the customer's needs, and not trying to up sell. Great selection of professionally curated bikes for all different users. Even though they are now in a great, much more suitable space, they seem to not have forgotten their humble beginnings on Barton. Special call-out to Mike for taking the time to get us the perfect bike all tricked out. Service is fantastic and personal. read more

This place is the best. I took a terrible spill on the Bathurst hill, couldn't even use my bike to take it in. Checked Google for nearby shops & thank G-d it directed me here. They bandaged me up, fixed the bike up lickety split, & even provided the encouragement I needed to hop back on the bike & pedal away. Great service, great people.
