Have been here twice for my youngest. Planned to take my older son. Saw two Difft barbers and liked my son's haircut both times. Clean, swanky place with a friendly and attentive staff. Cozy with leather chairs and wood. Very masculine and cool atmosphere. That's why them playing Fox News so blatantly both times we were in was jarring and frankly a turn-off. I've been here once *so far* and I intend to return. Note: this place isn't cheap, but I was drinking bourbon with my haircut, so it's a trade-off I'm willing to deal with. There's a reason there are $5 hair cuts, and there's a reason why there are $42 hair grooming experiences. Also - post-first-visit, I was given a $10 off any service, and a $20 off massage - easy enough to encourage me to come back for my next cut (and massage). Plain and simple, I always go where I can get in, and where I can book online. I don't need to have a conversation, or call and be put on hold, or my favorite - call, be put on hold, and then told they only do walk-ins and that "it's not a problem, but I should get my name on the list." *cough*bluestar*cough* This place was nice! I popped in, they poured me a bourbon, they sat me down and gave me a cut. Yeah, they aren't cheap, but my stylist (Sidney Bearss) gave a great cut, and great feedback (I'm a guy, I don't know hair, I rely on the person cutting my hair to give me feedback on what would look good) - I received compliments that night, a first in a while after a hair cut. She recommended scents, and was friendly and helpful for my first time here. Bonus - free touch ups, because my neck irritates me when it's fuzzy but I'm not quite ready for a hair cut. They also do *private parties* if that's your cup of tea - I could see doing a guys night out kind of thing, but perhaps more of a low-key evening of relaxation with your friends. read more

My 13 year son got his hair cut yesterday. Now that he has had a chance to wash and style it we called and asked if we could run in for his bangs to be textured since they appear to be cut straight across. I was told I would have to pay for another full haircut. This would mean I would pay a total of almost $100 for a cut. I don't believe this policy is reasonable and unfortunately will not be returning with any of my sons as I have been. read more

My husband went in for a straight razor shave and his shave was fine, but a few spots were missed. He shaved his sideburns even though it wasn't specifically requested. When he got home I noticed that he had a bald spot behind his ear where the barber shaved around his ear and it was clearly a mistake as the other side was fine. When I called to tell them about it the barber told me to have him come in to fix it but when I told him there is no hair there to fix, the barber just told me that he's been doing it for forty years and no mistake was made. Came in with my fiancé to get our hair cut. Atmosphere there was wonderful, they are very attentive at the reception asking if we wanted anything to drink as soon as we checked in. The fiancé got his hair cut and was done very quickly. His hair turned out pretty damn well, have to thank the barber John for that. Now I finally got my haircut done by Robi. Not only did she cut me on my forehead and right behind my earlobe with a pair of clippers, she also didn't texturize the hair like I had asked. Additionally at the end of haircut she gave me a complimentary massage. Normally I understand something like this would be some many would enjoy, but I physically do not like massages, they make my body tense up and muscles hurt more than before, when I told her to stop she would and just kept on going. Now for all other professional men looking for an upscale barber shop that understands the importance of image, comfort, and service, look no further, you will not find a better barbershop in Columbus. From the time you walk in the door until you walk out, you will experience true top level service. The barbers at Bates & Brown are some of the most professional barbers in the industry. I am the most particular person I know when it comes to my haircut, so I have been to almost every upscale barbershop in Columbus. I only wish I would have started here, could have saved myself 12-Years of searching. I've passed this place a number of times while shopping at MicroCenter, and it looked like a nice place. So I dropped in looking for a haircut and was told there were no barbers (this was at 2:00 PM!) on premises. I looked around and saw lots of manly dark wood, a fake fireplace and various fashionable pieces of furniture. Not your typical barber shop. The prices are not your normal barbershop either. I found that a normal haircut was $37 and "deluxe" haircut" was $47!!! Maybe women are willing to pay these kind of prices, but not me. Bye, bye. read more

I spent a full minute talking about how I wanted to beard trimmed and how I wanted to haircut to compliment my beard as it was growing. Not only did they not look at my beard at all, the price of the mindlessly simple trim was well over triple what I would have expected considering they used clippers. I have been coming to Bates and Brown Barber Chair for about 6 months now. Each time I have been greeted so nicely upon walking through the door. I like to arrive early for my appointment because the complementary drinks are always enjoyable (particularly by the fireplace). The environment is so welcoming, and relaxing with its old timey barbershop vibes. I always schedule my appointments with Chindar. He does such an amazing job and takes his time. You can tell that he actually takes pride in his work and he is a very laid back person. I highly recommend him for all of your barber needs! read more

This was easily the worst haircut of my life. Not only was it not to my liking, or to the directions provided to the stylist, but it was so incredibly ridiculous looking that I immediately had to drive to a different salon to have it remedied. It was a haircut no one would feel comfortable going out in public with. This staff member not only ruined my hair but during the process made persistent and off-putting comments. I went to Bates and Brown expecting a great hair cut at this price. I loved the atmosphere. It felt like a classic gentlemen's banner shop. I had an appointment but got in early in hopes of moving it forward. They were able to accommodate me and I sat down for the expected good haircut. The barber asked how I wanted my hair cut. I stated a face with the to long enough to lay down. He started cutting and as he finished cutting her instantly started applying predict and styling my hair. I never asked for styling nor was asked how I like my hair. He then washed my hair and restyled it. Not once from the time the clippers touched my hair until I walked out the door did I see my haircut my regular, non-product hair. So I come home, way my hair, to find there too barely looks cut. It was a transformation, not only did Valencia do exactly what I wanted according to the picture I showed her it was just an very pleasant experience because of the environment. I didn't take advantage of the free drink that day but it's a very nice added touch. The website is nice and easy to navigate for setting up appointments and viewing their menu of services. This is the best barber shop I have ever been to. I absolutely love it. When you walk in you'll immediately pick up on their cool vibe. It smells and looks like an old school parlor. When you check in they will offer you a bottle of water or a cocktail. On top a great barbers they also have licensed massage therapists on staff for all your needs. I am a new resident of Columbus. So yesterday was my second time going to this place. Next week will probably be my last visit just to get rid of the gift card I bought. But here's my review so far... Amenities are 5 out of 5 the customer service was great they really want their customers as comfortable as possible. I was blown away to see how nice everything was. But now I see why they do so much. This place is a super fancy great clips. They only cater to Caucasian hairstyles. The 1st time I went in had a wonderful experience. But my barber wouldn't give me the haircut I wanted because he said it would push my hairline back. But he assured me that a previous barber messed up my hair line. So the 1st cut not to judge. So give it time to grow. So I grew out my hair and came back. This guy wanted to give me this old man haircut!!!! (By the way I showed him a picture of me when I had a haircut that I liked for reference) I told him that there's no way this is ok. I need you to fix this. He said if I wanted it fixed I had to pay for an extra shave. So I said cool idc just give me the haircut I want. I proceeded to show him pictures of the haircut. Even pullled up Pinterest so show him examples. (Let me remind you. This is the usual haircut I get.) but he's like "no I'm not going to do it because your hair pattern won't allow him to cut my hair they way I wanted it." Also this isn't what's popular in the Midwest!? Wtf? I've never had a barber tell me I can't have my regular hair cut!!! Complete bull shyt!!! I was so pissed. But he was pissed too because I didn't like his haircut that he wanted for me. So he purposely takes the razor to my head and cut a mark and he's like "oh this is what you want" at this point I'm like bro. I'm not playing games with you. Think this place is as unique of a barber shop as I have ever been too, and the barbers seem to do a good job. That being said, from what I have seen most barber shops in Columbus charge about 15-20 dollars per cut. At bates and brown it will be double that or close to it based on what cut you decide to get. Great place! Feels like a gentlemanly cigar bar, and is a little pricey. Highly recommend Dennis, however last time I went I had a different guy who didn't take into account what I wanted for a beard trim. He just went to town and shaved it all off, which was not at all what I wanted. I then had to repeatedly tell him about areas that I needed clipped (raising the neckline of the beard, getting rid of hair on my cheek) and all he told me was that it would be a different service. I wasn't asking for a razor shave, just to raise the neckline with clippers. He did great with the actual haircut, though. read more
