The buticha and the key sir are amazing, especially together. I will give this place that--both are the best I've ever had. And the rest of the dishes are generally good--the injera is a bit thinner and less sour than I like, and they barely give you any injera at all, but whatever. On food alone this would be a 4-star place. The bulk of this negative review comes down to service and cleanliness, both of which are abysmal. For one thing there was no soap in the bathroom--sure there was a soap bottle, but it was bone dry. No paper towels or hand dryer in the bathroom either. Also no hand wipes or towels brought to the table as a lot of ethiopian places do, since you'll be using your hands. No hand sanitizer anywhere either. If I hadn't brought my own hand sanitizer it would be impossible to eat here in a cleanly way whatsoever. On top of that, the service is abysmal--took a half hour for them to take our order, and an hour for them to bring the check and charge the card. Plus an item from our check never showed up, with no mention of the fact that they were out of it until the very end of the meal. With so many great ethiopian places in NYC, there is no reason for me to ever go here again. This is essentially a dive, and not in the fun way, in the disgusting way. read more

I'm Abesha and normally I don't go to any Ethiopian restaurants not vetted by the Orange County Ethiopian Orthodox Church. However, my girlfriend and I wanted to treat one of our friends to Ethiopian food near Prospect Park and there, in the distance, was a small, cozy, dimly lit Bati. The fit fit (a vegan appetizer featuring fresh tomatoes, lemon, some spices, peppers and injera) was tart, fresh, brisk and titillating. The kitfo (Ethiopian steak tartare) was silk soft, herb infusing butter was deep and satisfying and suddenly, at the back of your throat, sweeping up like a summer breeze, was the aftertaste of roasted birds eye chili's, the fat of perfect beef, and the grounding earthiness of freshly made injera. The doro wot veered perilously close to mole territory but the balance of sautéed onions, berbere, butter, and chicken was good. The ybeg wot, a lamb based stew was equal party savory, savory sweet, and melt in your mouth. The Tej (honey wine) was not overly sweet, strong, and had a pleasant hoppiness. Don't compare Bati to other Ethiopian establishments such as Meskerem, Awash, Ghenet, or Queen of Sheba. Compare it to itself. I wonder if Bati is like a self-conscious nerdy teenager. Bati is located on a busy and delightful part of Fulton Street. There is something for everyone. If you are a fashionista, the Fulton Flea is one block away. If you are a bookworm, the Greenlight Bookstore is right across the street. If you are a lush, Habana Oupost is literally next door. My palate enjoys strong, powerful and spicy flavours, and Ethiopian fits the bill. Ethiopian food is my favorite cuisine for several reasons. For one, it is extremely vegetarian friendly. Lots and lots of veggies. I haven't come out of the closet yet, but I definitely have an affinity for all things colourful with high fiber content. And also, the food encourages sharing, food brings people together. And check civility at the door, this is hands only eating! Just a few words about Ethiopian cuisine because it is rather unique. The main course is usually served on a sourdough flatbread called injera and it is made from fermented teff flour. It has a slight sour taste to it, and the bread is soft and has the texture similar to a crepe. The injera is your utensil, you use it to pick up morsels of meat and veggie. It is sort of analogous to naan and indian cuisine (I hope I am not offending anyone). In addition, ideally, it is eaten on a table called a mesob (made from straw). I have not been fortunate to snag up a mesob table at any Ethiopian establishments, they usually are the first tables to go. We ordered the combination platters. One meat combo, One veggie combo. I won't lie, I was a bit wary of the meat combo, but my fears were assuaged once I tasted everything. The meat combo was a beef sirloin in a stew, lamb cooked in stew, and also a finely chopped primed beef in stew. The one I liked the most was the the finely chopped primed beef in stew; flavourful, tangy and fiery. I was a bit sad that doro watt was not part of the combo. After all, I have yet still to try the national dish of Ethiopia! For the veggie plate, we had a choose of 4 veggies and opted for beets, collard greens, lentils and another veggie (the name of the dish escapes me right now). The beets were disappointing, it didn't feel like an Ethiopian dish at all. The collard greens and lentils were excellent! The total of the bill with tax was around $50 and that's including 2 beers. Yesterday was my birthday and I chose Bati to celebrate. First off let me make one things clear: Ethiopian food is my all time favorite food ever; if I had to eat one cuisine for the rest of my life this is it! Some might think this would make me picky, but au contraire mon ami, it mean I will eat and probably love any Ethiopian food no matter the quality. So it's really about just HOW GOOD the food is because there really isn't any bad Ethiopian food! My BF and I order 2 vegetarian combinations, which is a choice of 4 veggie entrees ($14). Since there are 7 veggies I asked the waiter to bring us all of them, doubling up on the Tikil Gomen. We received the bounty on one large platter and the waiter told us the name of each dish. Visually I couldn't tell the difference between the Shiro (ground chick peas in a thick sauce) and the Missir Wett (split lentils in a stew), both we just ok, but one was clearly better then the other. The Ater Kik Alicha (split peas in a mild sauce) was a bit bland, as it should be. The Fasolia (string beans and carrots) and Gomen (collard greens seasoned with garlic and ginger) were pretty standard, but my BF loved the collard greens. The injera was nicely sour but unforgivably cold and dry. Actually all the dishes were a touch too cool. So up to this point everything was pretty average and I was a bit hesitant to try my absolute favorite Ethiopian dish of all time, the Tikil Gomen (cabbage seasoned with garlic and ginger). But Bati gets this dish 100% right - the cabbage is rich,caramelized and nearly perfect. I'm also shocked by the Buticha (ground chick peas in a blend of onion and pepper), this is usually my least favorite dish, but dude, their Buticha is what heaven would taste like if it were cold and crunchy too! We ended my dinner with a piece of warm sweet swimming in honey Baklava ($5) and I'm happy to report that it's one of the best pieces I've ever had. This is definitely the classiest Ethiopian joint in all of NYC, and the price is just right (especially with the BYOB). If they just figure out how to warm up the injera before serving this will unquestionably be a 5 star joint! read more

I give this place 4 stars because this is the 2nd Ethiopian restaurant that I have been to and I like this place much better. Ethiopian in Brooklyn is much better than DC Ethiopian in my opinion. The Ambience was nice, food good, the only problem was they didn't have ice for their ice water. Prices were typical for that area. Average $18-$22 per dish. The is the second time in a couple of weeks that I've tested the validity of a yelp three star rating and the second time I wish I hadn't. I've had Ethiopian cuisine before and while there was nothing extremely wrong, the fare seemed quite bland and flavorless. I had the mixed meat platter and to drink I had the honey wine. I liked the honey wine but the meat on the mixed meat platter didn't taste fresh or tender. The injera was a. It too sour for my liking. The service and ambience was okay, the lighting was quite poor. l'm not sure if that is intentional to create some sort of ambience, but is was a little hard to see what you are eating. I was waiting for the day to try Ethiopian food! We ordered two meals.... one combo meat and one combo veg. He served it on ONE round bread. I don't know if he still served the same portions so...... anyway It's very hot in there! Thank God there was a breeze coming from outside since they opened the door. The food was good though. A lot of puree and very soft but the bread to dip was not all that great for my tastebuds. I felt it was like raw dough. Like it needed to be thrown in the oven. It actually upset my stomach later. I adore the warmth a jalapeño pepper gives off in my mouth. I really love the comfort and complex flavors of stews or meat dishes that make u feel satiated and ready to face the barren duldrums of arctic Brooklyn on Superbowl Sunday. Cinamon, clove, cardamom black tea and soulful African music is completely Unwinding my stress and my stomach and soul are smiling. This is the right meal at the right time for me and I feel sheltered and at home at this elegant but laid back bistro. Service is spot on. Incredibly gracious without being intrusive. My mini criticism is the lamb was either a bad cut or not cooked well enough until tender. The flavor/seasoning was done right. I had ye beg ttibs, a lamb dish. I'm no expert on Ethiopian food but this was well presented, nourishing and tasty winter blanket for my stomach and palate as far as I'm concerned. I had high hopes, since the restaurant is so centrally located in Brooklyn, and I LOVE Ethiopian food. I initially was headed for Injera (which for some reason, is NOW CLOSED), so this was a tentative second choice. The service was marvelous but, alas, the food was NOT. The lentil stews were soupy and lukewarm, the doro wat was skimpy, and (despite the good service), the wait staff was unusually stingy with injera and napkins. Inconsiderate of customers. Served nasty, warm tap water that taste like it came from the toilet. When we asked for ice, lemon or desperately for a bottle of Spring water we were barked at and put down for not accepting there was no other option. Water is important. Clean tasting water is important . At least the option to buy water should ALWAYS be an option for customers in any decent business. This took away from the enjoyment of our meal. We were thirsty. So a Nigerian and an American go for Ethiopian...and it was HORRIBLE. The two stars are for the service. Our server was friendly and swiftly brought our drinks/food/ and answered all of our questions - which were many since my hubby and I never had Ethiopian food before. But the meal was just lackluster. I had the popular chicken dish, which came with a boiled egg. Only half a chicken leg which was actually smaller than the egg. My hubs had the lamb chunk dish. Was supposed to be spicy, but wasn't. Both of our plates were $18, & we stopped by a deli on the way home because we were both still hungry. Let it be known that I think Ghenet has the best Ethiopian food in NYC (although I hate the service and decor), so I was somewhat skeptical of trying out Bati when the Yelp reviews were, quite frankly, so incredibly mixed. First of all, I love the interior, cozy and simply wihout seeming stark, it felt a bit like eating at the Little Owl or something. The tables are really cool and they have a great wine list. Although I would recommend trying one of their honey meads. I had the cheaper one on the menu and it was great. I also really loved the way they do their portions. At ghenet you have to choose one of like 5 main meat (or veg) dishes and then you get two vegetarian sides to accompany it. At Bati, they give you a decent portion of not one, but THREE meat dishes and two veg sides, for less than one costs at Ghenet. I thought that the food was terrific, and may try and start going to Bati over Ghenet if only for the nicer ambiance and staff. The lamb and two beef stews (one of which was quite spicy which I love) were all tender and well seasoned. I guess the reviewers who were complaining about too much salt or a strange taste must have gone on an off night. The veg sides were great as well, nice flavor and consistency. The only thing I'm going to grade down a little, but JUST a little, is Bati's Injera, they are a bit inconsistent, but at the end of the day are delicious and serve their purpose. Before coming to Bati, I had never once tasted Ethiopian food. Now that I have, I realize I've been missing something in my life. This was the first time I had sampled honey wine - or mead, if you prefer. What a completely delicious drink! I found it to be similar in sweetness to Chardonnay, and it definitely had a robust taste that covered your palate. What I enjoyed most about eating here, though, was eating differently. At first, when we received our entrees on one platter served over injera, I was mildly offended. "Where the hell is my fork?" was my initial thought. And then as I got into eating with my hands, tearing apart the injera to scoop up the spicy, flavorful meats we selected, I found myself smiling. Here was a restaurant that not only challenged my palate with different tastes, but challenging the very way how I consuming what I'm eating. And hey, it's always fun to eat with your hands. The service was excellent, with the waiter giving recommendations and explaining the dishes. I rather liked the ambiance and the decor, and agree with reviewer Dave P.'s assessment: cozy and simple. If you're looking for a nice night out with your significant other, a date, or even a small gathering, you really can't go wrong with Bati. read more

You can eat with your hands! When I first asked a friend about eating at an Ethiopian restaurant, it became very clear that we didn't know the first thing about what to expect. As far as international cuisine, I'm certainly not the expert. If it's not American or Middle Eastern, I assume everything else on the planet is a noodle-based concoction. What? Not everything is Japanese or Chinese? Which made me glad that I tried Bati last weekend. It's got a very small interior, and with no bar (it's BYOB but no corking fee to speak of), it makes it weird when people are just sort of milling about waiting for a table. And that's in a "soft opening" mode*, as the menu dutifully noted, let alone what happens once it opens for good. We ordered mostly vegetarian options and one chicken portion, all of which were brought on a large silver platter with a base of Injera (a spongy Ethiopian bread which you will use as the primary transportation device from the plate to your mouth). I asked if it was equivalent to the Indian naan, and was not told I was incorrect**. The food, which is laid out in small piles on the large platter where you dip your bread and eat, was good, if a bit bland (the cabbage and collard greens were notably good). The Injera was a bit cold, but they did give us more when we asked for it, so that was nice. I'd certainly suggest giving it a try, even if it's not your favorite, just to expand your palate and see something new. Was here with friends. Have eaten lots of great ethiopian food in California and Texas. Even others in NYC are better. Was here on memorial day weekend with a few friends. Waited about 45 mins for a table, but that is cool. Ordered food, and waited without water refills for about an hour and a half before our platter of food for five people came out...... ONLY TO BE GIVEN TO THE COUPLE SITTING NEXT TO US. Whoops. The waitress apologized that she had given our orders to the couple next to us who had just sat. Oookie. Waited another 15 mins for our food, for which we were starving. To be fair, the quality of the food is alright. Taste-wise. But really scanty portions. We ended up ordering two more entrees which took another 30 mins. STILL NO WATER REFILLS. Anyways, food-wise, taste-wise, it is acceptable. But after the service we received, when the bill came out with a 20% gratuity included, some of my fellow diners were inclined to try and leave a negative tip. Well. Buyer beware! Will not be back. At first glance Bati seems truly inviting. The environment is small and cozy and appears to be well maintained. Upon arrival we were not greeted at the door but behind a counter towards the back. The gentleman telling us to sit wherever. Myself and two other friends sat to enjoy a shared Vegan Combination platter, which was ok until we found multiple pieces of hard plastic (Polystyrene) in our food. When brought to the waiter's attention, he asked us what it was as if he did not know then took the pieces in a napkin to the kitchen. When he returned he mentioned the kitchen stated a storage container previously broke so that is where the pieces came from. The waiter then preceded to walk away and did not accommodate us or apologize. The bill arrived with all the charges, including the food we did not finish because we were afraid it had more pieces contaminating it. We asked the waiter what he could do for the inconvenience and he mentioned at first nothing and then proceeded not to apologize once again. We asked to speak to the manager but he then stated he was the manager. You can clearly see where this story is going. Long story short Brooklyn has too many restaurants. Don't eat at Bati to receive contaminated food and horrible service. read more

Let me preface this review by saying that Ethiopian food is my FAVORITE cuisine. I love it. I look for Ethiopian restaurants everywhere I go. My Fiance and were in Brooklyn and I thought I'd take a chance on Bati, as it was close to our hotel. I'd never actually had BAD ethiopian, so I really wasn't worried. Bati is in a super cute neighborhood (Fort Greene) and while small, it is quaint inside and seems clean. It has a modern feel to it. The two waiters were really nice and helpful -- which is why I have this two stars instead of one. The service was great. It is still BYOB and there is a package store a few steps away. So that's always nice. The food was not good. The Injera was cold and lacked texture -- it was kind of dense and rubbery and dry -- thus the food liquids didn't even permeate it and soak up all nice and delicious, as is the custom with Ethiopian food. I ordered the meat combo and everything was oversalted. I mean, to the point where everything almost tasted the same and you had to stop eating and drink water to swallow. The spices were off somehow --- there was a really strong flavor that I'd never tasted like that in Ethiopian cuisine before. All in all, really disppointing. I usually leave an ethiopian meal busting at the seams -- I didn't even finish my meal. It is a new establishment, but still... The food should be good. And not so salty. read more

Limited vegetarian menu. Says its Ethiopian but feels pretty American to me. Only one male Waiter who is tacky, oblivious. I had to keep asking him for everything, he never even came to check on our table. He treated us like we weren't there. The Place is too tiny, your table is cramped upon another customers table..and there is only one desert which isn't worth it for $6 some sort of vegan slice of almond cake. One tiny bathroom , if someone is in it they dont like you to form a line.. and only a few wines and water to chose from no juices. I'm not going back here its not authentic Could not believe I wasted $20 on peas and carrots and basically a warap which hurt my stomach later on. Its just peas and cabbage for about $20 a dish with 4 small options. If you have money to throw in the garbage and are ok with still being hungry after you go here, This is the place for you. read more
