Very rude staff. My wife and I made the 2 hour drive to Cincinnati so I could buy a new hat and have an open crown hat shaped. I asked them if they would steam and shape a hat. The answer was a very hateful "NO, WE DON'T DO THAT!" I found this to be a little odd seeing as to how they are touted as being a custom hat shop. Apparently they are now simply a retail store with a very rude husband and wife running the show. This was a very disappointing trip. They will not get my money. read more

Very nice selection of hats by recognizable brands ranging from lighter warm weather hats all the way up to Borsalino felt fedoras. They had a good selection of sizes in each of the styles and you can work with one of the staff to try on and fit the type of hat you are looking for. I opted for another fedora that was reasonably priced at $85. A new hat box was provided without asking which was a nice touch. Prices are very good compared to other shops I have visited. read more

The shop is an hour and a half drive so I called ahead. The rude lady who answered the phone said something unintelligible. I asked if it was Batsakes and she replied yes with something else I could not understand. I asked if they did repairs and she reply "nothing". I asked again and she said they're doing nothing, call back in a few MONTHS! I still don't know if they do repairs or anything else for that matter. Its a shame I wanted to support a Ohio business. I will now be going to a hatter in Louisville 3 hours away, where all my questions were promptly answered and an estimate was given for the work needed along with a guarantee that if I get the hat to her in the AM it would be done by the end of the day. read more

Came in to get a hat shaped crown and brim which requires a steam machine and 15 minutes. Three people sitting around staring into space with no customers. Could be I was wearing a cowboy hat and a hoodie but was told they wouldn't be able to do anything for a month. Absolutely insane to me that they were not willing to do a little work which I would've paid extra just to get done. Would never go in there again can not reccomend. read more

We were not really concerned with money as we knew a good fitting and well made hat is considered to be an investment. BOY WERE WE SURPRISED! Worst service ever. Horrible service - I will NEVER go back. I had the same terrible service from the woman there. She had absolutely no interest in helping me, and I was the only person in the shop. She didn't want to show me any of the hats I wanted to try on until I insisted. I was in there to buy a specific style hat (which I told her), and I was ready purchase that day (which I told her), if the fit was right. I'm a hat guy, I have a lot of hats. I was ready to spend money -- I will pay for quality -- and even told her that too. I thought I could warm her up if she knew I was going to spend good money for sure. But she was so rude, it was obvious she didn't want my business. I was actually insulted by the way she treated me. I left and will never be back. So I walked across the street to House of Adam (this was a few years ago) and bought two great hats for less than the price of one of Batsakes'. By the way, I know hats, and the ones they carry are a mixture of quality levels -- some are good, some are ok. But ALL of them are overpriced. And not that great of a selection. You want good service from a great lady who knows her hats? Go see Greta at Hansa Guild on Ludlow in Clifton. She's wonderful, attentive, and really knows hats -- and will bend over backward for your business. I go in there at the change of season every year (spring/fall) and check out the new stuff that's come in. And most of their hats are lower-cost, but great quality. Also check out Goorin Bros. online, or if you're in one of the cities that they have a store in (nearest is Nashville or Chicago). Their shops are amazing... like you stepped back in time. With knowledgeable and attentive sales people. And most of their hats are made in the USA! I'd also recommend Meyer's Hatters on St. Charles in New Orleans, and Mr. Hats in Memphis. I was in Cincinnati for a conference, staying at a nearby hotel, and happened to walk by Batsakes Hat Shop a saw the large assortment of hats. I walk Ed in and tried on several. I spoke with the current owner who emigrated to this country at the age of 17. They sell many name-brand hats, but also have the ability to hand make hats from scratch, a dying art. I bought 2 hats and had them shipped. They arrived quickly and in perfect shape. I will definitely return on my next trip to Cincy. read more

I haven't given a 1-star in a long time. I went into this shop with a friend to buy a hat for his wedding. He wanted a nice hat to go with his nice tuxedo. So we began browsing. At one point we found a nice one, and when we went to text a picture to his fiance for her approval, the lady behind the counter snapped at us not to take pictures. She furthermore did not let us browse much anymore, nor did she unlock anything to let him try anything on. I asked if something was wrong, and her response was something that sounded much like "You're not a real customer." So we left, walked across the street to House of Adam...and found a beautiful hat. No better place for members of the bald brigade. Alright fellas (and possibly some women, but I'm not going there). Whether you are bald caused by genetics, shave it bald as a stylistic choice, or shave it because you want to hide the fact that genetics were taken you that direction anyhow (raising my hand), there will come a day when you need a good hat. Though I still own quite the assortment of baseball caps--and will collect more in my time--I am also fast approaching forty. No offense, but at some point we all have to face the realization that a ball cap is just not classy in most situations--just as most of us had to face the harsh reality that we weren't going to make the 'big show' either. For those of us, like myself, who are proud members of the bald brigade, and in need of some classy headgear, you cannot go wrong with Batsake's. The clerk came to me as soon as I arrived. He was attentive as I explained the style of hat that I was looking for--as I had already done my homework. He took me right to the perfect hat I was looking for. And, as a kicker, he got the size of my freakishly small head correct in only 3 tries. No small feat, I promise you. As an added bonus, I had brought my three-year-old daughter in tow that day. Both the clerk and the owner Gus were wonderful with her. They laughed right along with her when I tried on the first two sizes that were too large. They even helped keep an eye on her while I paid. Gus is a great guy. He chatted with me the whole time he was engraving my initials in the hat and decking with all the appropriate classy touches. But the best part--by far--about Batsakes is that it is completely old school. From the warm service, to the styles of hats, to the feel of the place, they really understand their customers and show a genuine passion and love for what they do. That might be why they survived so damn long in downtown while plenty other businesses have come and gone. Plus, I was pleasantly surprised at the prices. They were quite reasonable. Members of the bald brigade, I say unto you: "Do not burn your pate needlessly. Do not freeze small bits of hair follicles you still have embedded this winter. And for God's sake, do not walk into another event in a well-tailored suit and ruin it with your dingy Reds cap! Today I did a foolish thing. My penance is to confess my shameful lack of cohones to challenge the Batsake saleslady and walk out without the hat I drove there to purchase. It was December 30th, 2014, the day before New Year's Eve. I found myself in need of a Solid Black Kangol Ventair 504 Cap to round out my wardrobe for the following night's grand vintage Lindy Hop Swing event. Having recently moved across country, most all my dance wear was buried in storage. I probably own at least two dozen similar/same caps in various colors including several in Black; a Black version just happened to be out of my reach at the moment.. On the previous day I went to two different "Lid's" retail stores (Kenwood and Northgate Malls) and the K&G Fashion Store in Tri-County. None had a Solid Black Cap. The Kangol Ventair 504 Caps they did have were priced around $25/30, which in my mind was full retail . . . a price I have never paid in the past. But hey, I was desperate and was prepared to pay the price, if I could only find what I needed. Alas! I called Batsakes on this day and the saleslady with a thick European accent assured me that they did indeed have precisely the cap I was looking for. So I drive downtown and am greeted by the saleslady that I am quite sure I talked to on the phone. Sure enough, they had quite a large supply of the very cap I needed. I tried it on and said "I'll Take It!" and handed her by bank card. What happened next struck me so numb it was not until after I left the store and was headed back to my car that I realized what a stupid thing I had just done. The saleslady said to me "That will be $45.00" and swiped the card. In shock, I took the receipt and left the store. With tax, I just paid almost $50 for a cap that I have never paid more than $20 or $25 for. The full MSRP for this cap (which nobody charges or pays - until now anyway), on the Kangol website is $39! A price point I have never ever seen on one of these caps in a retail store. Again, I could have turned and walked out, but I didn't. They gouged me and I let them do it. But the thing to be learned here is that on this day, Batsakes in the form of the saleslady that waited on me, had it WITHIN THEM TO GOUGE ME. So be mindful of that. The good news is: they turned quite a profit on the sale of that cap. The bad news is: they will never ever get another dime of my money; and others who read this review may think twice before giving them theirs. read more

Cincinnati has a lot of great local businesses, and one of those is Batsakes Hat Shop off Sixth Street downtown. Batsakes (pronounced bat-SAHK-ees), has been in business since 1907 and offers both custom-made and ready-to-wear hats for not only Cincinnatians, but also for people all over the world. Gus Miller, the nephew of Pete Batsakes, runs the popular hat shop which has built up a nice reputation outside of the Queen City as well. In fact, many celebrities over the years have come through the hat store, as evidenced by photographs and signed pictures (and baseballs) in the shop. Some of those celebs include Bill Cosby, Luciano Pavarotti, the elder George Bush, Snoop Dogg, and Tommy Lasorda. The names, themselves, are pretty impressive, but when you take into account that Batsakes has served comedians, vocal performers, politicians, rappers, and former Major League Baseball players/managers, it's even more impressive of a list. Batsakes sells mostly Tilley, Stetson, and Kangol hats, and while I prefer the simple baseball cap, they do have some nice, stylish hats. The fact that Snoop Dogg and George H.W. Bush both have shopped there is evidence of the shop's versatility, and perhaps also of the variety of hat offerings. Not to be forgotten, Batsakes also has a local reputation for shoe shining, as they have several shoe shine stations on the right of the store. On the whole, Batsakes doesn't look that special but when you take into account their 100-plus year history and the all of the everyday people and famous ones who have walked through the store and bought hats (or had their shoes shined) over the years, then it is a pretty special place to call downtown Cincinnati home. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS AT THIS STORE SO BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT YOUR PURCHASE. Also, do not buy a hat if you are just visiting Cincinnati and not a local person. Dealing with these people over the phone is a nightmare. I bought a hat for my husband while I was on a business trip. I paid $250 for the hat. Batsakes was very reluctant to help me in any of this. They did not say, "We have a 'no returns' policy" as I spent my $250. They would not refund me the difference if I took the cheaper Stetson hat for $190. Just "NO REFUNDS." Both women I spoke to had so little understanding of the world that when I asked for the style numbers so I could look at the hats on the internet they both said, "Well I doanna know how you gonna look hats with just number!?!" I told them I could see the styles on the internet. They are still mystified by my magic powers. I am returning the hat by mail today with a copy of my receipt and my exchange request in a letter. If you are looking for great head gear that will last and look great stop in here. I stopped here today as I often do to browse and got to speak with Gus. He is a great conversationalist. We spoke of everything frome Greece, where he is from, to fine food and wine. I also learned that he makes hats and was amazed at the craftsmanship and beauty of his products. Also met his cousins daughter and son and realized how important family is to this business. Their hats may seem pricey but for what you get and that you are supporting a long time family business, since 1907 in Cincinnati, you more then get what you pay for. I came here to get a Christmas gift for my uncle last year. He's a hat enthusiast and knew I had to check the store after seeing it everytime I was in downtown. It was definitely the right place to come. I can't speak to the service other reviewers have gotten, but for me, the service was great. Once they had an idea of the style I was looking for, they suggested several different hats. I managed to find the perfect teal-grey topper that my uncle loves and claims everyone is jealous of! I came back to the store with him a few months later and, again, the service was great. They embossed the hat for him for free and I do think it's a place he would visit again when coming down to Cinci! read more

I've been to hat shops all over the world, and this is one of the best. It's like taking a step back in time to when quality and service were what set businesses apart. I'd been searching for flat caps in the UK and elsewhere, and was left disappointed. Though I'm Irish, the Irish caps tended to be too wide for my face. Though I live in California, I'm from Cincinnati, so on a family visit back in 2012, I thought I'd give Batsakes a shot, though I didn't have high hopes. I was blown away by the quality and variety of the hat selection. The person helping me was friendly and professional. She found a beautiful Italian wool cap for me. Since it's hot a large part of the year where I now live, I asked if they happened to have a black linen cap. She found a gorgeous Italian linen cap for me, but it was a bit snug. She put it on this hat-stretcher device that had to be a hundred years old, and gently stretched it. It then fit perfectly. I've had both caps for 8 years and still love them both. I highly recommend Batsakes, a true treasure and important part of Cincinnati history. read more

As a brand new customer years ago, I walked into Batsak's to ask Gus Miller what I could do about an Official Boy Scout Campaign Hat that I bought at the Scout Shop in Cincinnati that just didn't sit on my head correctly. This was a first-rate felt Smoky-The-Bear hat made for the Boy Scouts of America by Stetson. Gus Miller took a couple of measurements of my head with a large set of calipers and explained that my size would best be described as a 7 and 1/8 "long oval." He said, the felt hat was of the correct circumference, but needed to be steam shaped before it would sit in my head correctly. Mr. Miller then asked if I could leave it and told me to come back in a few days and he would have it ready. When I came back and I tried the hat on, it was dead-on perfect. Then to my surprise, when I asked how much I was to pay for his service, Mr. Miller told me there was no charge. I reminded him that I did not buy the hat at his shop, and that a good Scout always pays his own way, he still refused. The moral of the story is, don't walk into one of America's finest hat shops that has been in business for over 100 years and expect cheap prices. That's not how it works.
