Kind of creepy and not very fair minded. It always feels like you're doing them a favor by walking in. I bought two new batteries for a UPS. It ended up the UPS was bad. I immediately returned and said i can't use the batteries and if I could get at least partial credit it I return them. He said yes, and after taking the batteries offered me a paper mask. Needed 2 tiny batteries for my key fob. Paid $20 for them even though it cost $5 at target. I then realized i had these batteries at home and went back in about 10 min later to get a refund. Jim said as soon as I walked out the door he cant take a refund. I said you never told me this and its not written anywhere. He said it's written on the invoice. I said well you never gave me an invoice. Jim basically said ok and offered to only refund me $10 or $20 store credit. Sooo hard not to give him 1-star, but I sooo want to support local businesses. I went to Battery Hut to get a special rechargeable battery. Jim did not have it in stock and said "come back Monday or Tuesday". Today I went back, walking in with another customer. Assisting that customer took 15 minutes (and counting). The store's other employee says "sorry...Jim will have to help you". 15 minutes later...Jim is still promising to help me "in a minute". Sir...I have 1 hour for lunch. I can't drive 10 minutes each way, wait 15 minutes and STILL not get helped. I had to go back to work. He seemed stunned that I would leave with buying from him. I so want to give my money to a small, local business, but you have to SERVICE THE SALE! Not to mention, his price was 40% more than I can get them online. I HATE to chose Amazon over a small business, but this was a bad experience. The guy's shop hasn't been updated since 1979. Larcenously Over-Priced This business recently moved to the S. Victory Blvd. location in Burbank from its previous S. Glenoaks address. I found myself in need of a CR1632 battery for the electronic key for my Toyota Camry in order to stifle that pesky "low key battery" message. I first went to Walgreen's. They had a niche in the battery display for the CR1632, but were sold out. The nearby CVS and Ralph's didn't seem to carry the item at all. Suppressing a deep sigh of annoyance for a seemingly simple task that was proving so difficult, I popped over to Battery Hut's new location on S. Victory. The first thing that struck my eyes as I walked through the door was the posted notice that all sales less than $25 were CASH ONLY. Really? Well, ok. How much can a CR1632 battery be, especially if Walgreen's was selling them for $5.79 (IF THEY HAD ANY)? I remarked to the sales person behind the counter that this size battery seemed uncommonly difficult to find. Somewhat unctuously, he remarked that, for electronic car keys, they were primarily used with Toyota and Lexus (Well, golly, I guess there aren't too many of THOSE around, huh?) But hey, lucky for me, he had them on hand and priced at ... Wait for it ... $12. Cash. Why did I get the feeling that the price he quoted was made up on the spot knowing I was anxious to purchase the item? Let me remind you that Walgreen's sells it for $5.79 when and if it feels like stocking it. Hell, even the rapacious Service Department of my Toyota dealership only extorts $5 to change the stupid thing. And I can probably get it for dirt on the Internet if I want to add shipping. I used to have my batteries replaced at Kesslers but they closed down so I took my Seiko dress watch I bought in St Martin in the 1980's and a Swiss Army watch which was only a couple of years old. Both watches were in perfect condition but just needed batteries. This place gouged the insides out of both watches and ruined them. The second hand on the Seiko was off and the crown was broken on the other watch. Neither watch worked again and I ended up tossing them. I was furious and the person behind the counter offered to have his uncles friend take a look at it. What can you do ? Sue ? Consumers are willing to pay higher prices for products when it comes to supporting small businesses. However, throw in 100% markups and the worse customer experience ever in the history of buying, then there you have it. I would never recommend or patronage this establishment ever again and I hope that all that are considering supporting this establishment do so with adequate research. When it turned out that I could use some existing equipment I already owned (the owner's idea) they were just as nice to me. My son's electric toy car's battery went dead and we thought it would be impossible to find a replacement 6V battery with the specific leads that it required. Radioshack recommended this place to me. I called and Jim answered and said he may be able to help me. I went over the same morning and Jim was the nicest guy in the world! They had the exact battery. Because they had to change the leads and the fuse, the total cost of the battery and labor was $20. The service was absolutely excellent and I highly recommend The Battery Hut for anyone looking for an obscure battery. I was looking for a battery solution to power some camera gear. Basically just a high capacity battery and a connection wire/adapter and charger. Everything started out well until they told me the battery I was looking for would cost a double mark up price. ($110 for a $49 battery) I thought that sounded off, so I checked online for an average price and asked them why so much? I came in prepared to pay $60 for the same model battery they were trying to sell me.. That didn't go over well, they were deeply offended by the notion I would compare a price, have questions about why, and just shut down... I asked if I could still commission them for a connector and a charger.... nope.... no more answers to questions, no nothing. They actually said "we could help you, but we're not going to." Then went silent with a smug smile. OooooooOOooooK...... I laughed and left. If you still plan to use this place for a battery solution, I hope you have a better experience. Expensive, but it's a small business, so figure what the hell. Note MasterCard and Visa sign. Hand over credit card to pay. They say cash only. I say you have the MasterCard and Visa sign up. They say they only take credit cards over $25. Total violation of both the Visa and MasterCard terms of service. He doesn't care. Ask for card back, tell them that they're not getting the business, and walk out. What a bunch of losers. Go to RadioShack and get better service and probably a better selection too. They've been around a long time and have staff to design and provide power solutions for control systems as well as a good supply of consumer and professional batteries and supplies. They have always been friendly and helpful when I go in and prices are reasonable enough that I'd rather have the relationship and ability to drop in for advice or assistance than go online to save $5.
