I rarely review businesses, but felt I should warn others about this place. Their rep, Amy, was incredibly rude and unprofessional. She complained that my insurance company wasn't paying her enough, interrupted me constantly, and seemed to resent even having to talk to me. I felt like a child being chastised. At one point she said, "I'll order your lenses when I get around to it." Which didn't exactly fill me with confidence that I'd ever get my lenses. I told her never mind and went hunting for a new eye doctor. If Amy had just said that she did not want my business, I would have happily obliged. With deteriorating vision thanks to law school, I made an appointment for a check up at this optometrist around the corner. When I arrived there, they told me that the only doctor available could check my vision and prescribe me new glasses. However, I would have to come back again to see the another doctor who could fit my contacts. Though I thought it was odd/annoying, I only agreed because I really needed new glasses and I still had a few pairs of contacts left. I don't know if I saw Bauman or Stoleru (whichever one can't do contacts I guess), but he was incredibly rude. While performing my vision test, he repeatedly told me that I was not trying hard enough. When I politely told him that I was trying, he raised his voice at me and told me that I would have to try harder if I wanted to see. Creating this environment definitely did not help the situation, as I lost the focus I needed to see those little letters on the wall. I have been through dozens of eye test and never had a doctor scold me. Now I go to Dr. Schneid down the road in Cleveland Park. He is much nicer and can do my glasses and contacts. read more

Dr Stoleru was thorough and explained things to me. The receptionists were great. I did wait to see the doctor but my appointment was for 2pm so I expected that. Dr Croteau was very helpful in my eyeglass choices. I was fascinated by this as I have not worn glasses in a long time. Will return again! read more

Called this morning to make my first appointment for a routine exam. The receptionist spoke to me in the most condescending and patronizing manner when I asked about my insurance coverage. I refuse to spend my time, energy and money here. No thanks. read more

UPDATE - Dr. Croteau changed practices. ORIGINAL - Dr. Croteau is a gem (I saw her spring of 2016). She is thorough and a good listener. I liked her a lot and felt like I was in really capable hands. The staff seem to have some communication problems - I came in to pick up my trial contacts on the day I was scheduled to do so, waited an hour, and then was told that the contacts had not arrived at the office yet. But I'm still going back this year because I want to see Dr. Croteau again. If you're looking for someone good who takes Medicaid, I believe they do here. read more

After waiting almost an hour for my appointment, I had a fairly typical, routine annual eye exam. I told them that I regularly wear contacts but, this year, would also like to buy a pair of back-up glasses and so would need help getting the appropriate prescription for both. They agreed that that was a good idea and proceeded with the exam. However, because this was my first time ever buying glasses, when I walked out of there with only one prescription in my hand, I didn't realize that this was a problem initially--I assumed the same prescription would cover both my contact and glasses needs. It wasn't until I went to order contacts online that I was told it was a glasses only prescription and that it couldn't be used for contacts. So I called the office up and spoke to them about what had happened, explaining that I hadn't realized I had needed 2 separate prescriptions. They said that I'd have to come in for a separate appointment...at a cost of $175. To summarize multiple, very long, very frustrating follow-up conversations, it was a nightmare. As part of this initial conversation, the female owner of the store offered to give me a pair of trial lenses to cover me until I could schedule an appointment, but, by the end of the conversation, she was yelling and cursing me as I was requesting another appointment for free, and said she would no longer give me any free trial contacts. It was incredibly unprofessional and rude and I was appalled that the owner of a business would treat a customer so poorly. Visiting the office itself will shine a light on the demeanor of the place too, I believe, as the office is extremely outdated with their computer and accounting setup. They were not interested in my needs as a customer, or in helping me once this had happened. I would strongly recommend you try someplace else! read more

I used B&S clinic though my health insurance in June 2015. I got a routine check-up and new glasses. I had a great experience, found the entire staff to be friendly and helpful, and got a great pair of spectacles. I didn't have to pay a co-pay on my first visit and my only out-of-pocket costs for everything was a small portion of my deductible totaling less than $100. I'm ashamed to say I can't remember the name of the doctor I saw but she was wonderful. Very patient and thorough. The woman who seems to be the primary secretary for the office was also excellent, very friendly and professional. That lady was working her butt off between constant phone calls and patients coming in and out of the office, yet she was still friendly and cheerful. That says a lot about her professionalism and care for patients. read more

Does not deserve a star. I had an appointment to have my eyes checked and my first appointment went okay (had to wait over 30 minutes in chairs that have not been updated (nor cleaned) since the 90's.) Once I finally arrived in the room, I saw a bug glue trap under the desk and was immediately grossed out, but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. I had to make a follow up appointment to see doctor Stoleru since I was a first time patient and I did so at the front desk. At my follow up appointment, I arrived early and was not spoken to for 45 minutes. When the receptionist finally called my name, she informed me I would not be able to see the doctor until his surgery was finished. The receptionist made it clear that scheduling me during this time was a mistake. I was extremely frustrated since I had a lot to do in the day, took off from work and then found out my appointment was not going to happen. (I also asked why no one had called me to tell me that my appointment was going to be delayed by at least two hours. The receptionist at the front desk talked to the manager and then asked me if I was willing to wait an additional hour after already waiting 45 minutes. I told her "No, I do not have time to waste an additional hour or more to see the doctor, since I showed up to office on time." I have never experienced something so unprofessional and would not recommend this facility to anyone (what a waste of time). I told them I will be changing doctors (they did not care) and I did. I am so happy I switched. Just a heads up on my personal experience to anyone else who is considering going to this awful office in your near future. This was a really disappointing experience. Really rundown office, with very uncaring staff. I arrived at 3:20p for my son's appointment after calling at 2:50 to confirm. After having taken him out of school early to make it in time for the appointment, I was checked in with no anticipated wait time. After 45 minutes of waiting, I inquired as to how much longer this would be and was informed "any minute now". After another ten minutes, still nothing, I asked what the delay was and was told "the doctor is backed up". This would have been helpful information to have when I called an hour earlier and took my son out of school early. The office manager was equally inconsiderate, no explanation as to the delay or any apology. Additionally, the waiting room adjoined a stairwell where you could hear the upstairs neighbor yelling and then the smell of marijuana started flooding the stairwell and waiting room. Definitely not the experience I wanted for my 8-year-old son or myself. read more

I went to Bauman & Stoleru for new contact lenses. The optician working with me provided me with several samples of contact lenses to try, which was wonderful. When I called her back to order my contacts (after having tried all the samples,) I was surprised at her curtness and brevity. I had several questions regarding my pair of contacts (cost, etc.) and she was so rude, and grew impatient with me when I did not understand. When I repeated the cost back to her, she acknowledged that was the right price, but repeatedly tried to upsell me. I felt affronted and attacked, and eventually did decide to order more expensive lenses, because she told me the company offered a rebate. However, when I picked up the lenses, it became clear I was not eligible for the rebate after all. When I inquired about this, I was told I was wrong, and that I misunderstood, and there was nothing anyone could do for me. The customer service was unbelievably poor--I was yelled at, upsold for a rebate that didn't exist, and then dismissed. I will NOT be going back. If you do business here, I hope you have thick skin. read more
