My wife and I have been patients of WEP&S for a number of years for our Annual Vision Checkup. We have appreciated the services provided to us. Our checkup appointments were fully covered by our insurance provided through Medicare and Blue Cross/Blue Shield - Carefirst for employees of the State of Maryland. Following my February 26, 2026 appointment, for the first time ever, I received an invoice of $153.79 citing services not covered by our BC/BS - CareFirst insurance. I called BC/BS and the WEP&S Business Office on 4/29 and 4/30 to ask for an explanation why I received this invoice. I received conflicting information from the people I spoke to in both offices. The BC/BS person referred me to Davis Vision that apparently is now involved in the management our Vision Plan. The DV person informed me WEP&S is not in their network so this is probably the reason why secondary insurance coverage was not provided. I passed this information to the staff person in the WEP&S Business Office who said "there have been changes in insurance coverage, but your invoice stands"; and then hung up on me. I found this response to be very unprofessional. It would have been appreciated if I had been informed in advance of my Feb. 26 appointment that WEP&S no longer takes our secondary insurance. I made an appointment for an eye exam and wanted to see if I was a good candidate for contact lenses because I didn't want to wear reading glasses anymore. I was given an appointment with Dr. Bhandari. The only problem is that Dr. Bhandari isn't a medical doctor. She has a doctorate in optometry. I'm OK with that, but IN A MEDICAL FACILITY, I think it's reasonable to expect people addressed as DOCTOR are actually medical doctors. I think it's misleading to call her a doctor. Also, I made very clear to Ms. Bhandari that I wanted contacts to avoid using reading glasses. I wasn't even sure if that was possible with contacts. We went through the whole process, I got my contacts, and when she was doing the final exam, she said I would still need my reading glasses. So the whole thing was a waste of time. The person who helped me with learning how to put the contacts in and take them out was great. I had a good experience with the front desk. But, like others, the wait was long. THE MEDICAL MIRACLE OF VISION CORRECTION My brother had PRK surgery with Dr. Adi in 2011 in order to become a Coast Guard pilot. He was 18 at the time and his eyes are still perfect 7 years later. I met with Dr. Martin at the beginning of summer, 2017 to discuss my options. Dr. Martin remembers me from visit to visit and handled my poor vision, chronic dry eyes, and corneal abrasions with ease and professionalism. I felt confident that I was in good care throughout pre-op visits, the surgery itself, and post-op. Dr. Martin went to great lengths on the day of my surgery to ensure/explain that my eyes were not strong enough for LASIK and that I would need the PRK surgery. He explained what to expect and ensured I was comfortable with the change before proceeding. 6 months later I am seeing 20/15 and no longer have dry eyes or corneal abrasions. My mother has been a patient of this practice for at least 30 years and my husband & I were patients there when we lived in D.C. (the doctor who we went to is no longer with the practice, but I still remember how incredibly nice he was). My mother went to Dr. Berler for many years and she went to Dr. Martin in recent years, then a few months ago she went to Dr. Song and today she went to Dr. Dagli (he's a retina specialist). After reading the complaints about lengthy waiting times, I'm wondering if perhaps the staff is more solicitous of my mother because she's quite elderly. Regardless, she's always had very positive feelings about this practice - and she told me that Dr. Dagli in particular was very kind & patient. I had my lasik procedure performed here. The experience was flat out AMAZING. Dr Martin, Tonoa and the rest of the staff were attentive, transparent and patient. My old contacts rx was -4, -5 and i had worn corrective lenses since i was 10. For those that aren't familiar, that rx is pretty bad. I couldn't really function with my glasses or contacts. Less than 25 hours later I have 20/20 vision, which could improve to 20/10 in th next few weeks. I woke up the day after feeling amazing. There are potential side effects; dry eye, itchy eyes, etc but I followed Dr Martin's instructions to the letter and have had very little discomfort. Do what your Dr tells you to do! I can't say enough about the experience. I'm so happy with my decision to look for a reputable provider and not get caught up in the price game. You will find cheaper providers. I found the provider I wanted (Dr Lamothe and Dr Martin) and I planned and saved for this. I'm not made of money. As you are looking for options, you have to have a consult with Washington Eye. In August 2011, I presented at Washington Eye and saw Dr. Neil Martin. The day before, I had visited a local emergency room after feeling a "scratchy" sensation in my left eye. The eye was improperly treated and overnight developed a virulent and dangerous infection. Dr. Martin was not able to treat the condition and sent me immediately to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore which on a Labor Day Friday afternoon was over two hours distant. When I arrived there, I did not find a corneal disease fellow (the specialist was not available that day) whom Dr. Martin had assured me would meet me there and begin treatment. I ended up in the Hopkins's emergency room where I waited for eight yours before being treated. The long delay proved disastrous as the ulcer grew by a third in diameter and by an unknown increased depth in the cornea during the wait. After weeks of daily office visits at both Hopkins and Washington Eye, my eye was still painful w/ "count fingers" vision. A year later, central corneal scarring kept me legally blind in the eye. I sought relief via a corneal transplant to remove the scars at Washington Eye (Dr. Marwa Adi). Three and a half years following the complicated corneal transplant procedure performed by Dr. Adi, I learned that it could not have been considered a "successful" transplant. My vision in the affected eye is currently unstable at 20/400. This is pretty shocking news and another local ophthalmologist described the graft as "rejecting" with deep post-transplant blood vessels growing in to the graft's surface; My records from the new eye surgeon show that a corneal ulcer had formed on the 2012 transplanted tissue following Dr. Adi's surgery. The follow up period during which stitches were removed from my cornea lasted 18 months (a relatively long time) The reason for the continuing pain and damaged vision is inexplicable. According to Dr. Kang, a replacement graft is not recommended due to damage to the structural integrity of the eye and the condition will continue to produce recurring corneal erosion, which is very painful. I received an amniotic graft from Dr. Kang as a temporary fix. Dr. Kang recommended that I return to Dr. Adi for treatment since as he pointed out, in addition to erosion, rejection and structural issues, a growing cataract in the affected eye will be inoperable and eventually cause total blindness (and also inferring that since he can't fix it, perhaps the surgeon whom operated on it can). In fact, three different opthalmologists have attempted to refer me back to Dr. Adi, whom I justifiably argue, would not seem to be a good physician for me in this circumstance. In addition to the unstated poor outcome of her surgery, our association lasted for over two years and and I often felt stymied about exactly what was happening with my eye's condition during that pre and post surgical period. Dr. Adi is technically a very good surgeon and she has very steady hands; however communication is not her forte and I must say I wonder about the effect of her association with Dr. Martin on her willingness to discuss openly the condition of my eye since he was somewhat ineffectual during the critical phase in 2011. 18 months after the June, 2012 transplant, Dr. Adi stated that it was "healed" and that post-surgery follow up was complete; she referred me to an associate whom after three attempts, was unsuccessful in fitting the grafted eye with visual-acuity-beneficial contact lenses The action-plan was too vague and undefined to give me any faith in finding a feasible formula for a contact lens that would remain seated on my extremely uneven post-surgery cornea. Since the transplant, I've had poor, fluctuating and intermittently painful vision. Blurring, halos, reflections, haze and corneal erosion have all played roles in making the status of my eye difficult to self-assess. At one point post surgery, There are other circumstances at play with Washington Eye Physician's and Surgeons that negatively impacted my eye's condition; chief among those I would simplify by calling "numerous communication problems" between the team of physicians internally and between those physicians and the patient; with the onus being on the physicians to correct that sort of thing. I surely would not want this to situation to happen to another living soul - it has proven to be life-altering for me. read more

UPDATE: So after having an issue during cataract surgery, waiting 6 months for everything to heal and then getting Lasik surgery I now have 20/20 vision - or rather mono vision - no glasses necessary. Dr. Clinch took care of me. The Lasik center is wonderful. Healing was quick. Had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic and Dr. Gess responded on the weekend to get me another script. The team there is now my optometrist for my regular eye exams. Would recommend the practice to anyone needed eye surgery or general eye care. The reviews here are right with one critical exception. While Dr. Schwartz and the practice may take your insurance - their surgical center and anesthesiologist may not. And you won't find any of this out until you have waited 3 weeks to see him, gone through 2 hours of testing and evaluation and then go to schedule surgery to find out no insurance for surgical center. BTW I have Cigna AOP/PPO - MAY not apply to you, BUT ask about doctors' fees AS WELL AS surgical center coverage. And as for the evaluation - while thorough with what might or might not be the state of the art equipment - there is NO explanation of anything, cause, reason, results. Just check off the boxes, walk patient from one room to another, next test, move on. And there was no anatomy lesson on what would happen, how, healing, process. By assistant or doctor. The place is BUSY. Efficient to the point of a robot. And I was clearly the youngest patient in the waiting room. So they don't need or care if your insurance works or not. What kind of business practice sets up a system that doesn't provide customer service thoughtfully to their patients/customers. To be fair Dr. Schwartz called to let me know he would not move surgical centers, recommend another surgeon, but really didn't get the time I wasted waiting and going through the evai when I could and should have found a doctor in DC who takes my insurance along with their surgical center. I have now booked with Dr. Clinch....will review when process is complete...jury out at this point. read more

I got Lasik here in June 2013, and I couldn't be happier with the results! I used to have 20/400 and now have 20/20 vision. Dr. Martin performed my surgery and Dr. Song does my follow up visits. I really have enjoyed the visits that I've had with both of them. They ensure that any of my questions are answered and any issues are remedied. One thing I would recommend is that you take the Metro to the Friendship Heights stop, if you can. The parking situation is less than desirable. I spent several years nearly legally blind due to botched lasik surgery in both eyes. Any doctor I went to was unable to rectify the situation or did not want to undertake corneal surgery. I was left wearing special contact that left me sightless when removed. One doctor suggested I seek an appointment with Dr Adi at Washington Eye. What a difference one visit made! She actually gave me hope! In June of 2016 I had a cornea replacement done and the results were tremendous! I had my last follow up today and was given a prescription for glasses because my vision in my left eye is normal! We have now begun to plan the second cornea surgery in my right eye for this Spring! I can't say enough positive things about my lasik experience at this place. I waited until after my one-year check up to write this review, proud to say that, after lasik monovision surgery, i am 20/20 vision and should never need glasses again. The doctors and staff were very professional, a pleasure at every interaction. I did not have to wait long for any pre- or post-op appts, and Dr Adi did an excellent job. I had a very bad (bait-n-switch) experience with a lasik surgery factory mill many years ago, walked out and got a full refund and have since decided that my vision was too important to go "on the cheap". Dr. Macedo performed my LASIK procedure at the Wisconsin Avenue office in June 2014. My procedure was one week after my consultation. Now I have 20/15 vision in each eye and don't wear glasses. My wife also went to Dr. Macedo and had the same experience. The procedure itself was quick and painless. Dr. Macedo follows up with you several times over the next year, so I'd recommend you do your follow-up appointments at the Silver Spring office, where it's less busy, has free parking, and the staff are unbelievably friendly. $5,000 might seem expensive, but it really is worth having someone competent do such an important procedure. read more

I absolutely love Dr Kenneth Schwartz. He goes out of his way to explain the details of the procedures. Unfortunately the office staff is absolutely horrible. I never knew the costs or my insurance requirements. And unfortunately, the level of incompetence continues. I recently referred a friend who required eye surgery. The same problems continued. Her follow up appointment after her surgery was almost a month later. I observed the office staff speaking rudely to her for asking questions and I also observed when they wouldn't answer her calls. She wasn't being a pest. She had sincere issues that needed to be addressed. Such as if the drainage from her eye was normal. Or if she could have the doctor look at her eye earlier than the scheduled appointment. To make matters worse. She had to use her daughters phone to get them to answer. I know I'm not the only patient who has experienced administrative issues. We've spoken about it while in the waiting room. Compassion needs to be understood. Instead of losing their composure, they need to place themselves in the shoes of the patients. But this patients come last attitude has persisted since I started going to the office almost 8 years ago. Some of the best physicians in the area work in this office, yet the administrative staff brings it down. It's like being served a great dinner and then the busboy drops the plate in your lap without bothering to apologize. read more

Husband went for a cataract consultation. Said the office looks like Grand Central, & unfortunately, customer service to match. He waited 20 minutes for a tech, & too bad his obvious competence was more than equaled by his arrogance & aloofness. At some point he actually gave hubby a hand signal commonly used to summon dogs and kids. He then waited at least 1/2 hour to see Dr. Martin, who was pleasant enough, but didn't thoroughly explain procedure & expenses. He did recommend' the $1,600 laser cut upgrade--don't suppose the extra 1MM income a year would have anything to do with that? Of course, the procedure may very well be superior to a blade cut, not covered by Insurance and Medicare. Finally, I was ushered into finance manager's office. She suffers from the same arrogance affliction as the tech. In addition, nobody told me upfront that I'd have to pay some $400 not covered by Medicare, to boot! I'm picky, but none of may be important to you. They may very well be an outstanding cataract surgery shop, but for me, this wasn't the customer experience that I want anywhere. read more

I visited these folks yesterday, first time, for a baseline look at my eyes. the medical outcome was right; I know that. But I have just written them a letter which in part says, "I left feeling that I had been a bit of grist in a large, dispassionate, badly mechanized medical mill." There was also a potentially much more serious paperwork deficiency which is not detailed here because, in the end, it turned out ok. Take a look at their website. They proclaim themselves the best, no words or pictures minced. Well, maybe ........ They seem to be doing a roaring business but I'll probably look elsewhere. I haven't yet met my doctor and that's because I've been here since 9:45 am and still waiting. The time is almost noon. I just read the reviews and a lot of people complained of the time wait. I myself am a dentist and wouldn't never have my patients waiting over 30 minutes. They told me the doctor was running 15 minutes late but that was over an hour ago. Although I like the doctors at this practice I have to agree with many others that the wait to see a doctor is WAY too long. They schedule too many appointments too close to each other, so that you end up waiting 45 Plus minutes for your appointment. I find this disrespectful and have mentioned this several times, but it doesn't seem to improve. read more
