Dr. Rivers performing my Zeiss SMILE surgery

I got SMILE surgery at EnVue and 100% recommend it. I went to Envue because I saw Dr. Rivers is a former military surgeon, and the military does tons of LASIK, and I can confirm I felt I was in great, experienced hands. Dr. Rivers is the best in the area. The consult to see if I was a good candidate was free, and took about an hour. The staff were extremely kind and I enjoyed the fancy machines, including one that took a photo of my retina without needing those dilation drops that normally leave you blind for a couple hours (why doesn't every office have that?). Dr. Rivers took the time to explain the surgery but there was no pressure to book. The surgery itself took about 10-15 minutes though I was nervous, they did everything to make me comfortable, including letting me pick the music! I was sent home with eyedrops, slept off the Valium, and 4 hours later woke up seeing clearly with no downtime, which far exceeded my expectations. I work on my computer all day and was able to get back to work immediately. Dr. Rivers and his staff texted and called to check that I was doing well. A follow-up appointment was also included. A month later, my vision is 20/20. I'm slightly more sensitive to bright sunlight (it feels brighter), but I think wearing sunglasses on a bright summer's day is a great tradeoff for never needing glasses or contacts. I do see haloes around bright lights as well, but it doesn't impact my vision either because (like most people?) I don't often stare directly at lights. My eyes are only dry when I wake up, and I don't use eyedrops as they feel fine as the day goes on, which I hear is one of the benefits of SMILE -- less drying than LASIK, and this symptom has been improving over time. I 100% recommend SMILE and Dr. Rivers who has decades of experience in this newer, improved technique over LASIK. The entire staff is extremely professional and gave me good vibes while having eye surgery which is really something.

Surgery room with dimmed glass for patient privacy. SMILE machine is on the left and is what I had.

However, it wasn't until recently, when I had a serious problem, that I realized just how lucky I was to have chosen Dr. Wills so long ago to be my Lasik doctor. Since November 2015, Dr. Wills has been treating me for a very severe case of "in- growth" under my Lasik flap resulting from a cat scratch to my left eye and almost two years of uncontrolled growth. The in-growth had spread across my cornea resulting in astigmatism and extreme dry eyes. Dr. Wills was under no obligation to take my case and could have easily referred me to another doctor. Fortunately for me, Dr. Wills agreed to help me because the in-growth covering my cornea was significant. He knew his experience made him uniquely qualified to successfully perform the surgery I needed. Dr. Wills ended up performing two surgeries on my eye to "scrape" the in-growth from my cornea. This required an incision to lift the flap, scrape away the in-growth, and place a protective contact lens over my eye. Dr. Wills is such a skilled and experienced surgeon that, unlike many other surgeons, he did not have to use sutures to secure the flap. After the second surgery, Dr. Wills had to irrigate my eye twice to wash away new in-growth that was returning. Since that time, I have had three appointments with Dr. Wills and, so far, the in-growth has not come back. My eyes are no longer dry and my vision has vastly improved. Dr. Wills performed the surgeries, the irrigations and all the exams as a "follow-up" procedure to the original Lasik surgery and never charged me one penny. By the time I had my first appointment with Dr. Wills I had already been seen by several doctors who could not help me. Right after the cat scratch, I was seen by a doctor who prescribed antibiotics. After a few days, the injury seemed to heal and I frankly didn't think any more about it. As time went on and my eyes became increasingly dry and my sight blurred, I went to an optometrist for prescription glasses. The optometrist told me I had scar tissue around the Lasik flap. He couldn't help me. From there, I went to an ophthalmologist who, after two appointments and a dry eye test which turned out negative, couldn't help me either and ultimately referred me back to my original Lasik doctor (Dr. Wills). At this point I was very upset because I didn't know if this condition could be treated, if it would return, and what it might mean for the future of my eyesight. I made an appointment with Dr. Wills who immediately diagnosed my condition, told me what to expect, and laid out a treatment plan. He was comforting, patient and called me after each procedure to see how I was doing. His staff was always friendly and scheduled my next appointment before I left the office. This experience has made me realize that you have to choose not only the most talented ophthalmologist you can find to perform your Lasik surgery but also one that has integrity, cares and feels a responsibility for his patients. You never know when you might really need that superior level of care. I am profoundly grateful that Dr. Wills is my Lasik eye doctor and I would recommend him without hesitation to my family and friends.

What is also disconcerting is the event that occurred just before this botched surgery. She had gone in for her annual eye exam In Oct 2006-and Dr. Littlefield STRONGLY suggested she get this cataract surgery immediately even though she had no side issues or complaints when going into his office that day for her annual exam! She has been seeking corrective treatment from the Wilmer Institute at John Hopkins University Med Center ever since! It has been a nightmare. Her eye color has even changed from light brown to blue. It has been painful for her physically and emotionally. The drives to Baltimore and the occasional overnight stays (surgeries) have been a monetary strain to her and she is not able to enjoy her retirement as a result of this. Not once has he called her to see if she is OK. If she had been more litigious - maybe she could have slapped him with a malpractice suit. Please think of my Mom before making an appointment with Dr. Littlefield!

What's concerning is that this only happened after I specifically asked them to review my scans again. Had I not pushed for a second review, I genuinely worry they may have proceeded with surgery despite the risks. I also requested a direct explanation from the doctor and never received one. Instead, I had to repeatedly call the office just to get basic answers and speak with someone knowledgeable. My impression is that the process felt far more focused on moving patients through surgery than on patient safety and communication. I would strongly encourage anyone considering a procedure here to ask detailed questions, seek a second opinion, and carefully review whether they are truly a good candidate before moving forward. I also felt the recovery expectations were presented in a way that understated how difficult and lengthy recovery can actually be.

This review is not of the eye doctors, who I'm sure are exceptional at their jobs. My review is of the staff or more specifically the two ladies who answer the phone. I called first thing in the morning to let them know I cannot make it because my child is sick. They told me I had to pay a $50 cancellation fee due to their policy (which I understand). I explained that I am a new patient and was not aware of their cancellation policy. I also asked if they can make an exception as I am a new patient and was not aware of their policy. They denied my request, which was also fine. However, the ladies were Extremely rude in their tone and the way they spoke to me. I was hung up on and had to call back to which a different lady picked up the phone and was equally (if not more) rude to me. It was very shocking that such a well established place would hire blatantly disrespectful people like that. I have never been treated in such a degrading way in my life by a doctors office. I highly suggest finding a different place if you are looking for an eye doctor.

I was also advised that there would be an elevation in my Blood Sugar however, i was not advised of other possible side effects and complications from the shots. I was diagnosed with blood clots 6 days ago and have been trying to speak with my doctor for 4 days. The receptionist advised me on Wednesday that the doctor received my Fax and the Test rests and I might receive a call from the doctor. Thank God I didn't hold my breath. I called yesterday Thursday to inquire about the request that I submitted online for an appointment that has not been responded to; the receptionist advised that she doesn"t know how online appointments are handled although the voice recording recommends using online scheduling. The receptionist placed me on hold to reach out to the doctor who advised her to tell me that, I need to reach out to my Primary Care doctor for assistance; she does not treat blood clots. It took me 4 days to get an answer and she won't speak directly with me; this is unacceptable.
