I took Bay Area Firearms "Full Length Pistol Certification" course on March 8th 2025 with a friend. There were 2 other participants in the class whom I did not know beforehand. All of us were beginners with near-zero firearms experience. My impression is that this "class" was as close to a scam as a class can possibly be, without actually being a scam. The class I took is listed here: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/bayareafirearms/items/290236/calendar/2025/03/?flow=531785&full-items=yes&back=https://bayareafirearms.com/ After signing waivers and paperwork, we were handed off from the original instructor Scott to another instructor Andy who was a retired cop from Hong Kong. Andy spoke in a thick accent, and everyone had trouble understanding him. There was none of the basic introduction I would have expected: no basic safety rules, no "here's what to expect today", no "here are the parts of the firearm", etc. Instead, we were handed 9mm Glocks and immediately told to load them with blanks. To his credit, Andy clearly knew how to handle a weapon, but he was really bad at explaining it to anyone else. After about 30 minutes of this rather painful basic "introduction", we were charged another $228 to buy ear protection and ammunition. I was aware that ammo and range fees were not included in the $254 class, but at no point before class did anyone say how much these fees would actually be, or that we would be buying (not renting) ear protection. On the class listing it says range fees will be $20-$40, and nothing else. AFTER we made the purchase, we were then told to drive for almost an hour from Burlingame to the actual shooting range at Field Sport Park in San Jose, in our own cars. At no point was this ever disclosed up front. The actual shooting at Field Sports Park was the best part of this class. But I honestly learned more from watching other instructors teach their own students, or getting tips from my friend (who had more experience than I did) than from Andy, who mumbled, and was nearly impossible to hear or understand with all the shooting going on, through our $80 ear protection. My own shooting improved over the course of the 2 hours that we were at the range. But VERY SLOWLY. You'd think that in a beginner class, costing almost as much as a new Glock, each student would have their own weapon to fire. Instead we took turns, sharing one piece among 4 students. After going through approx. 100 shots, we drove home. No certificate of any kind was provided. Instead, Andy told us to call Scott at the shop and take a test later. I have not done this yet, but after reading other reviews, I do not have any faith that any certificate provided, would actually be worth anything. I'm sure Andy, Scott, and Harold are experienced and knowledgeable. Andy was clearly a nice and well meaning guy, but a very poor communicator. However, the non-disclosure of the fees, and the fact that we had to drive an hour to a shooting range, were dealbreakers for me. If any of this had been disclosed up front, my review would be very different. My opinion of this class was clearly shared by the other three participants in my class. Maybe we just got unlucky, but I do not understand how this establishment maintains nearly a 4-star rating on Yelp. There is vast room for improvement here. If you are a beginner looking for basic firearms training, I cannot reccommend more highly that you look elsewhere.

Per requirement for my new job @ Stanford in Palo Alto as a OR Department Aide, I registered for a BLS/ CPR course here ( which is AHA certified) , coincidentally on Presidents Day . To begin with, the parking situation and availability is extremely accessible and easy to locate.... There is a parking garage with plenty of space, as well, there is accessible spots curbside around and close to the main building. All & all, my overall experience and in my personal perspective/ opinion, everything went extremely smooth, and I walked away with a smile and a positive feeling.... When you enter the main entrance at the 1900 building, you simply go straight to the elevator, and turn left on the first floor of course, and the classroom is right there on your right - room # 150. The moment you arrive, there is a reception desk, which I was greeted by our instructor: Kaaren. There a restrooms and vending machines close by when needed. As well, I was pleasantly told when I arrived, there was tea and coffee and fridge close by. Basically, the classroom was comfortable, adequate size, and there is large outdoor attractive patio on your left.... Between the combination of slides/ video , hands - on equipment, and your instructor , the three- hour course was extremely enjoyable , pleasant, and without and pressure whatsoever. Besides my personal overall experience, all aspects of this fairly new course/ location are pleasant and relaxing. I highly recommend registering for your required CPR class right here. I'm very confident you will be happy and pleased with your experience . Lastly , I would like to give props and my personal referral and thanks to our INSTRUCTOR: Kaaren.... She was nothing shy of extremely pleasant and informative. She was a positive spirit, from the get go as I entered the suite. She as many years experience as an EMT, and several years as an instructor. She positively and plainly made the course extremely enjoyable and calm and easy... Please inquire regarding this course, you won't be disappointed, guaranteed! Thanks Kaaren, you're the best! God bless you...

After getting licensed, we were supposed to be placed in externships. Unfortunately the communication from the school stopped with no explanations. As of today April 15, 2026 entire class did not get any externships so we are all doing random jobs now to get by. What's even worse is that my friend got motivated to do the same program and enrolled on the program for the class batch after us, he also passed the board. We both did not know that the school would suddenly stop assisting us after getting licensed. During the enrollment and beginning of the program, the school emphasized that they will assist with the externship. One of main reasons I stayed with the program is because they advised that they have a plan-B which is staffing so there is a safety net, that we will get externship, but that didnt happen either. While our entire class is trying our best to find our own externships after getting licensed and got "ghosted" by the school. The school is still enrolling more and more students and posted more future class schedules on their website. Which makes me wonder about their plans, if they can't find externships for the previous and current students, why are they still enrolling more students?

However, it is now April 2026, and I still have not been placed in an externship. When I follow up with Mark, I'm simply told there is nothing available and that I should start contacting hospitals for placements myself. It is disappointing to pay for a program that shifts the responsibility of clinical placement onto the student after the work is already done. Total failure on the school's part.
