Brian was unprofessional, rude, and had a habit of belittling students. He made the learning environment uncomfortable by embarrassing people rather than constructively correcting them. While I understand that it's not an instructor's job to be friendly or to "hold our hands," there's a difference between being direct and being outright disrespectful--and Brian crossed that line. In terms of content, the class was heavily skewed toward theoretical discussions, such as legal frameworks for self-defense and broad topics on conflict and society. While some of this information was interesting and well-explained, it dominated the day, leaving little time for actual hands-on firearm training. The balance between theory and practical instruction was way off. Additionally, while Brian welcomed questions, he often responded by making students feel stupid instead of providing clear, direct answers. This approach, combined with his condescending attitude, discouraged people from asking questions at all. A firearms class should foster confidence and competence--not intimidation. I gave it 1 extra star because instructor Spencer was amazing. Overall, I did not gain much practical, in-depth knowledge about firearms or safety. If you're looking for a class that prioritizes hands-on training and a professional learning environment, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

He prides himself in using a "Socratic method" of teaching by responding to students' questions with another question. Even if he considers himself some sort of philosopher I would personally appreciated it if a simple question from a student such as "how does this work?" could be addressed more directly instead of being answered with "how do YOU think it works?" Simply said, it would have been a more efficient and pleasant experience for everyone if he could just put his narcissism and fragile ego aside. All in all, I have some gratitude towards Monarch because I did learn something over the course of my time there. However, since then I've moved away and sought training elsewhere I've realized that there are many training centers and instructors out there that are much much better, both in teaching methodologies and credentials, especially you're willing to leave California.

The staff behind the counter are incredibly knowledgeable and more importantly, they're actual shooters with real experience. They take the time to answer questions, give honest advice, and make sure you leave confident in your purchase. No pressure, no ego, just solid people who care about their customers and the shooting community. Rare to find a shop with this level of professionalism and authenticity these days. Finally had the chance to come here and I'm so happy I did…read more Once you drive over the hill entering the parking lot, you see a massive parking lot. On the right side is a huge trap shooting area and at the back of the parking lot is where you check in for the pistol and rifle range. You sign in, read review the rules and pay the fee ($25 per person). From there you'll be assigned a bay depending on what you're shooting. Once you enter the range, you go to your bay and set up. Note that you must have eye protection and ear protection on at all times when you're inside the shooting area. If you shoot rifle, they have stands depending if you're lefty or righty. You can shoot seated or laying down, supported or unsupported. I don't think they allow you to shoot rifle standing up for safety purposes. For pistol, they have steel targets or free paper targets anywhere between 25 to 100 yards. The steel targets at 25 yards is a little far for first time shooters. The steel target is about the size of an average size backpack. So at 25 yards it might seem hard to hit for first time shooters. So I recommend getting a big paper target so you have a better chance to hit the target. The far targets are 100 yards. More meant for rifle, but if you're good with a pistol it's a fun challenge. You can shoot the steel gong, or set up paper targets. The range attendants are very strict about the rules but this is common and expected because safety so important when dealing with firearms. I advise first timer shooters to read and know the rules before entering the facility. There are bathrooms to the back left of the parking lot next to the huge cool shotgun shell structure. What a fun first time here. I'm definitely coming back. Maybe even pursue a membership one of these days.

I kept on hearing good thing about it but I never went there until last week and I regret not…read morecoming here sooner. This is indeed the best range in the Bay Area. Although the name says Sunnyvale but it's closer to the Cupertino mountains. Although the map shows a long windy road heading there from 280, it's not bad not long at all. The range unfortunately is only open to the public on Tuesday or Saturday. The parking lot is huge and the restroom is on the other side of the parking lot from the main buildings. The checkin is at a small window next to the pistol/rifle range; you don't actually go into the office. After you pay you enter a steel gate where the stands are indoors but the targets are outdoors. The only problem is that there is a limited number of bays so I can see that it could get super busy and you might have to wait. The people there are friendly and no fuss. I don't think this is a good place for absolute beginner because the distance to the closest target is about 20? yards which might be too far for most beginner shooters. What I absolutely love about this range is the availability of steel targets at 25 and 100 yards. This is rare for most ranges at the Bay Area. Also they are not fussy about "rapid" fire. Also they provide paper targets and paint spray for the steel targets for free. The cost of the range is only $25 which is really cheap compared to most other ranges with the exception of Metcalf. I think I will come to this range every Tuesday from now on. There is also a shotgun range. Overall, this is absolutely my favorite range in the Bay Area for myself.

This was exactly what I needed to get familiar with a professional woodshop and all the essential tools. The class accomplished its main goal perfectly: giving beginners hands-on experience with the equipment in a safe, structured way. Over two Saturday afternoon sessions (3.5 hours each), we made a simple candle holder while rotating through practically every major tool in the shop. We used the sliding compound miter saw, jointer, planer, table saw, band saw, router, and various sanders. While the project itself wasn't particularly exciting, it was clearly designed to maximize tool exposure rather than create a masterpiece. David was an excellent instructor who prioritized safety above all else and patiently answered every question. The class size of about 10 people felt just right for getting individual attention. The woodshop itself is impressive with a fantastic selection of professional-grade tools. Parking was easy and the classroom was simple to locate. At around $150 per person, it's not cheap, but felt reasonable considering you're getting access to thousands of dollars worth of equipment and quality instruction. Just expect to get covered in sawdust! We had plenty of time to complete our project without feeling rushed. This class is perfect for complete beginners who want to learn woodworking basics in a supportive environment. It's specifically designed as a safety prerequisite for their more advanced classes where you can tackle more interesting projects. If you're thinking about woodworking as a hobby or just want to try it out, this is an ideal starting point. I'm definitely planning to take more classes here.
