Indoors, he was docile and lazy. Outside, he was possessed by his excitement. He is so gentle he couldn't even get food out of a Kong! But we had three major stress-inducing issues: ZERO RECALL WHEN DISTRACTED: I spent a lot of time training him with high-value treats like bacon and ribeye. When it's just the two of us, he would shoot out of a cannon when I called him. But the moment he played with another dog, those ingrained habits were completely forgotten. He went totally deaf, which was a major safety concern. LEASH REACTIVITY: When he's leashed, he gets frustrated at times when he sees other dogs, and he might lunge and growl at passing dogs, making walks a bit of a chore. SUDDEN BARKING: He developed a habit recently of waking up at 4:00 AM and rush out the room barking like the house was on fire. Before Barak, I only used positive-reinforcement training. Totoro knew the commands, but positive reinforcement simply could not compete with his intense excitement around other dogs. I have owned dogs all my life. So, when I decided to adopt Monte, an 8 week old (+/-) stray, husky/pitbull, I was confident I could handle the little guy. But 4 months later, he had become a 60+ lb., out-of-control monster. He jumped on everyone, attacked feet, and "playfully" tore my arms to shreds. He peed everywhere and destroyed my house. Within a year he was about 90 pounds and his behavior was even worse: He refused to walk on a leash, get in a car, "come" or "stop!" Every day he damaged me-physically and psychologically. I've had previous positive experiences With Barack, but as of the most recent dog sitting service I requested from him I must say I'm actually very unhappy. My dog was coming to stay with Him while she was completing some medical treatment, upon drop off I attempted to explain in depth about what I needed him to do regarding her care according to her medical veterinary team, and he essentially cut me off before I had a chance to finish my thoughts because he "knew what to do." Upon my return, I found out that he had made a number of decisions regarding her diet that he did not run by me. Considering the fact that she was fresh off of medical treatment, I would've hoped that he'd be a bit sensitive to that and be overly communicative in terms of any kind of decisions that he was making while I was out of town, but he did not do so. I understand with his experience that he likely has perspective as a trainer, but I don't appreciate the ways in which he essentially ignored what I had to say about my animal, as well as information I tried to provide that was coming directly from my animals medical team, and what she needed at the time. He essentially did what he wanted. I also don't appreciate a number of negative comments he made about my veterinary team, despite the fact that I don't think that he has a veterinary degree or any kind of medical licensure. Forewarning that this is a long review bcz I have so many things to say. My daughter adopted scoobs during the pandemic while she was in college feeling very isolated. From the get go he was reactive and it was only made worse by the codependency she and Scoobs had formed in the isolation. Fast forward 6 years and it has only gotten worse. Every walk was stressful not knowing what would trigger him. Our lives revolved around not being able to have people over unless they felt comfortable with Scoobs aggressively barking at them and every little sound would get him riled up which didn't make our neighbors very happy. We organized to meet in person for an evaluation and I thought for sure he was going to say the bad behavior was too far gone but instead, he had set a timer when he walked in. Scoobs was locked up in bathroom with a muzzle on and my daughter proceeded to talk about Scoobs' history. She had to talk quite loud as Scoobs' barking was drowning her out. We just finished Barak's 35-day board and train program, and our expectations have been absolutely blown away. We've had our dog Bentley - Rottweiler / German Shepard - for 5 years. I contacted lots of trainers before I found Barak and ultimately, I just was not comfortable with most of them or did not feel like his story and background was/could be understood. My dog had lots of things going on. To start, I am his 4th owner. He is comprised of mainly Rottweiler but also other breeds like Doberman, Pitbull, GSD (haha genetics galore). He has worked as a working dog for me before (has gone through task training). I signed up for this training (5-weeks) because my dog (she's two) Quinn didn't understand basic commands and it was really hard for me to walk her because she's so strong and would not listen to me. Well where do I begin my girlfriend and I have 2 fur babies Duncan and Gizmo who in essence ran our household and were very spoiled. The bad thing was they both WERE very reactive dogs and when we did they them with us on weekend trips to breweries and wineries it ended in disaster and embarrassment. I brought my 10-month-old puppy to Barak's board and training program because she was extremely leash reactive and would bark at all dogs and everyone who passed by. Should be 10 stars. I hate to sound like a broken record, but Barak has truly changed our lives. My out-of-control Jack Russell had been rejected by a couple of pet sitters ("He's too much for me"), denied boarding on a flight to visit my parents (because he wouldn't stop screaming), ghosted by a dog walker when (after our 3rd meet & greet) she finally stuck around till the end and witnessed his screaming upon leaving a dog park. I'd stopped taking him to agility classes and dog parks, or really anywhere in the car, because his screaming/thrashing/hyperventilating due to overexcitement upon arrival could be heard at least a mile away. It was so loud that people would stop their cars in the road because it sounded like a dog was being skinned alive. Like the worst toddler tantrum you have ever heard x1000. I mean SCREAMING bloody effing murder, but there truly are no words to describe. It was like he was going to have a heart attack each time, and that stress couldn't be good for him. Friends, family, and employees at the vet's office and pet store avoided him. The stress really affected me too, as I felt like I couldn't take him anywhere in the car and walks were super unpleasant. Despite dozens of different leashes and collars, he pulled like a sled dog, with both front legs going between his back legs. He didn't mosey or even trot to sniff a spot of interest, he DARTED, often right across my path. I couldn't stand still for one second without him pulling with impatience. After tweaking both shoulders due to the leash being violently yanked, I started holding it with both hands in front of me, like I really was being pulled by a sled. After spending thousands of dollars on private and group trainers, in-person and virtual, group and one-one-one, plus dozens of webinars and books, all to no avail, I found Barak. After the 35-day board and train, I now actually enjoy walking with my dog. We walk with a super loose leash that's just draped around my finger. He doesn't scream when he sees other dogs or try to jump on their humans, he just calmly walks past them. Dogs used to be aggressive towards him because of his over-the-top energy, but not anymore. I never ever thought he'd be able to be off leash in a non-fenced area, but we can do that now, and he still sticks close to me. Bahahaha, I feel giddy & vindicated & downright triumphant over his walking manners now!! Car trips have become manageable, going from a complete NO-GO to a little bit of vigilance and work but nothing unreasonable. It is far far far more progress than we've ever made before. The ongoing support from Barak in the form of consultations and free unlimited group classes gives me confidence that I'll be able to do all the things (hikes, road trips, restaurants, agility) I've dreamed of doing with ease with my dog. I had tried another training program that's a franchise (lets call them Arf Arrestors -- maybe you can infer), with supposed lifetime support, and it was a total waste of money. The trainer's recommendations were useless and ridiculous and only served to ramp UP the screaming. Her response was , "It's not that bad, just ignore it." There's no way any honest human could've said it wasn't that bad. Total gaslighting. Contacting her always resulted in an autoreply that she'd get back to me in 2-3 business days, never an immediate response. She, along with all the other trainers I hired, applied a one size fits all approach to their training. He has a passion for dog training that makes him want to really figure out the "key" to each dog. Because some dogs need a more tailored approach. After the board and train, Barak didn't just hand me the leash and let me figure it out on my own. He checks in on how we're doing and has continued to work with us. He replies to my questions immediately or within a couple hours. Perhaps most importantly, Barak is a really good human. Which, why would you want anything less in someone you entrust with your dog? He's not just in it to make money, he really wants to improve a person's relationship with their dog. My dog adores him and can also thank him for the calmness he now exhibits and the fun he gets to experience with his newly earned freedom.
