I was sent here against my will two days before last Christmas after being beaten, tased, and injected with 3ccs of something brown by the Ipswich Massachusetts police. They later lied and claimed it was Ketamine, despite Ketamine being a clear solution and not brown. Since I was knocked unconscious and arrived to Beverly Hospital unconscious I received a CAT SCAN. It revealed I had basal ganglia calcifications which were deemed "insignificant" despite there being plenty of literature and case studies proving it is significant. The psychiatric nurse assigned to me, Whitney Gibson, only spoke to me on three separate occasions over a three week period. The psychiatrist assigned to me according to my medical arm band, Dr. Guprit S. Lamba, NEVER spoke to me once in the three weeks I was there despite me repeatedly asking to speak to him. My social worker, James, only spoke to me with Whitney present. Each time Whitney Gibson spoke to me she accused me of comitting a crime I didn't commit. When I refused to falsely confess to wrongdoing she would angrily storm off and then refuse to speak to me for another week. I signed a 72 hour release form when I arrived which wasn't honored. I signed a release for them to contact my prior PCP, Dr. Zhuri, and they NEVER contacted him over three weeks. I signed a release for my PCP before him, Dr. Loughran, and they never contacted him. I signed a release for my prior psychiatrist, Dr. Ramirez, and they never contacted her. The three weeks I was held there against my will I was refused the antidepressant, Lexapro, which I had been on for TWENTY years prior. They also refused the Ativan I had been taking for twenty years for anxiety and insomnia. They refused to prescribe Ambien which I have been taking for twenty years for insomnia and then staff would be mad at me for being awake at 3AM. They denied me the pain medication I had been taking for a severe C5-C6 cervical spine bulge for over four years. This caused me to go through withdrawals from multiple medications all at the same time. Whitney Gibson repeatedly insisted I take antipsychotics I had never been on previously like Zyprexa, which I then had an allergic reaction to. Then she insisted I take Invega, another antipsychotic. This was despite Parkinson's running in my family, so Dopamine Antagonists would be contraindicated and ill advised. The Invega caused me to become extremely confused and severely paranoid. Everyone on floor two, which consisted of around 20 individuals, appeared to be on one antipsychotic or another regardless if they were necessary or not. Many individuals were being given Seroquel for sleep, despite it not being a sleep aid. It is an antipsychotic which happens to be extremely sedating. Using it for sleep is an off-lable use and shouldn't be prescribed to everyone, especially if they are predisposed to Parkinson's. Whitney Gibson wrongly assumed my Biochemistry degree from UNH was a delusion, despite this being VERY easy to confirm by asking my fiancé of four years, or my parents. She also had me arrested at discharge, and tried to trick me into signing a statement that I wouldn't sue them for their treatment of me while held there for three weeks against my will. I strongly feel Bayridge should be investigated as a whole for their overuse of antipsychotics on most to all patients regardless of mental issue. Antipsychotics have been proven to cause structural changes to the brain the longer they are prescribed, and they shouldn't be prescribed for no reason, or out of laziness and a desire to sedate everyone to make them pliable and confused. Whitney Gibson and Dr. Lamba should be investigated specifically and in my opinion fired for their behavior towards me, lack of care in general, and the permanent damage they have caused me. I now have Tardive Dyskinesia and PTSD as a result of my stay there. I was also recently diagnosed with a chiari malformation of my cerebellum which I wasn't born with. It is very likely related to brain swelling and CSF build up from being knocked unconscious and tased in the back repeatedly near my spine. This place is like prison. I was held here against my will even though I was not a threat to myself or anyone else. I signed a 3 day release form and the doctors basically laughed at me and said that they would "petition the court" for me to be held here longer, but 2 days after they refused to let me leave they said "oh! now you can leave because your insurance ran out". The staff like to sit around and do nothing, the doctors are quacks and not to mention that they will drug you up with antipsychotics to the point where I would collapse on the floor and would have to literally crawl to my room. Other patients like to hog the phones which always causes a big confrontation. You can't eat anything that a visitor brings you. Nothing to keep people occupied, just a lot of sitting around and doing nothing all day. They accused me and another patient of "trading medication" which never even happened. I would rather be sent to Tewkesbury state hospital than be sent to this place ever again. read more

Trying to visit someone... the main entrance is not in service, the waiting room is basically unstaffed, security can't be found... the place is a ghost town. I've never seen anything like it! read more

I found Bayridge Hospital to be very outdated. The staff tends to restrain patients who aren't violent or of harm to themselves or others. Putting patients in the quiet room is an easy way out for them. I was appalled at this. I witnessed patients also being chemically restrained, which is to give them so much Thorazine or other meds that they can barely move and sleep for hours. There have been complaints against the hospital with the Mass Dept. of Mental Health. Yet they fail to do anything about it. Probably because they're under staffed. In this day in age the hospital shouldn't be getting away with the way that they treat patients. I would never go to this facility again. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's best to stay away from it!! read more

I can't speak highly enough about this place. I was in for 8days for depression and anxiety.. Every aspect of the treatment was top notch! They helped me feel better even in one week, because of the very caring staff, the fantastic groups that are available to the patients so they can start healing on their own with all the info and encouragement they offer!! If you have a need, the staff goes above and beyond to make sure your need is met in as quickly as possible((unless there is an emergency they have to address)) I am really very impressed and grateful after being in patient here.. I really didn't want to go get the help I needed because I had the stigma of hospitals for mental health picture in my head, so I was very anxious about it.. This hospital took all that anxiety away.. Even from the person who greets you when you first come in the door till the last person you say goodbye to when you leave, the entire staff is the best!! The food leaves a little to be desired but hey after all- it is a hospital, sooooo..... read more

A family member was visiting me when she experienced a manic episode and ended up at BayRidge, involuntarily. She has spent some time in facilities outside of Boston so we have something to compare it too. I am so impressed by the care that she received there--the staff was so kind, patient and caring. My family member's experience was so positive that she decided to voluntarily extend her stay until her moods and thoughts stabilized more. She felt it was a safe environment, unlike some places where she has stayed. Highly recommend. read more

I had a horrible experience as a patient here. I left Bay Ridge and was diagnosed with PTSD as a direct result of my stay here. I was not given food or a chance to talk to my social worker or psychiatrist. My stay at Bay Ridge harmed me in so many ways. It should be shut down immediately. read more

I was recently a patient at BayRidge and was greatly mistreated. After I was released, I was diagnosed with PTSD as a direct response from my time in BayRidge. I was attacked by another patient who had a history of using violence against other patients. I was not granted time or space to meet with my social worker or therapist nor was I allowed to work on an exit plan with them. In addition, as a patient with a history of documented eating disorders, my diet was not monitored at all. I was the only vegetarian on the floor at the time and was commonly only given a salad or a bowl of cereal for a meal. I advised my university to never send another student there again, and they have since changed their policy and have taken measures to avoid sending any students to BayRidge in the future. I do not understand how a hospital like BayRidge is able to remain open with such gross obvious negligent behavior. read more

i just wanted to say that bay ridge hospital is the best by far. the staff are so friendly and helped me to understand what was going on with my loved one for the time he was there. the building itself is a little outdated but it's what goes on inside that really counts! read more
