No one reracks weights, the locker room isn't cleaned and machines are broken a lot. It was better a few years ago

For $80 a month this gym is a scam. 1. The dirtiest gym I have ever seen. Equiptment has visible build up of dirt and leaves on it. 2. This gym is not accessible and friendly to people of all shapes and sizes. I am very short, under 5 ft. I cannot reach the cleaner spray, they put it nearly 6 ft in the air. It takes away my respect and dignity when I have to ask for someone to get it for me. It would be 100% free to make the gym more accessible for all, but they won't do it because they love having a dirty filthy gym! 3. The womens sauna has been broken for years. I have gone here on and off for about 5 years now and have never seen it working once. If the men get more ammenities and perks than the women, then I want to pay a different rate. It is GENDER DISCRIMINATION to provide difference services for men and women, but charge the same rate. 4. Virtually no air conditioning. Going back to working out at home again because this gym hits 80 degrees+ in the summer. They have the windows open and the blinds open and it gets HOT. I'm cancelling my memebership because I might as well jog outside for free! I find the staff to be lovely, but the management is a total failure. read more

Beware of hidden fees! 1. You will be charged a maintenance fee on top of your membership fees. 2. When you leave, they will charge you for 2 more months. No kidding - their small print cancellation policy ensures that they will charge you 2 additional monthly fees after you stop going there. When I raised the issue regarding these ridiculous fees being charged to my account after I left the STATE, I received a nasty email from a manager about how they are entitled to it. Disgusting. And regarding recent events - during COVID, their staff made NO effort to ensure that members wore their masks covering their noses during running/cycling. I asked multiple times for employees to address the issue, but employees largely sit behind the counter on their phones. This place charges high prices for a mediocre gym, at best. Used to be a member here couple years ago, used to be very basic without many classes. The gym is just one floor of some equipments. It was not as expensive as some other places but still more expensive than places like planet fitness and I dont think it was any superior to those basic places. If your apartment doesnt have a gym and this place is your only option, then I would recommend it but otherwise not a big fan. read more

Good variety of equipment, but I tried canceling my membership 2 weeks before my move via phone call, but found out they will not let you cancel without 30 day notice and you have to go in person to cancel. Staff was unexpectedly unfriendly when informing of this policy and stated that it was in the contract I signed when I first joined if I read it. Overall unexpectedly poor experience trying to cancel a $70/mo membership, really costly policy that is not openly advertised. I would not recommend this if you have other options. The monthly fee is $70 and there is a yearly maintenance fee that is much higher. The cancellation policy feels a little deceptive, and having staff be unfriendly/irritated that you did not remember the fine print of the contract makes it all the worse. read more

Gym is fine for 70$. But the staff at the gym is totally unfriendly and always busy doing their own things. 1 day I had some questions about some classes and the girl at the reception had no idea. Also, mens locker rooms are shitty and no locks. Lockers are broken in and people steal your things. I had my jacket stolen from the locker room and the management totally shrug off their shoulders saying -"they cannot do much in this". Also they don't have any cameras in whole gym! Dirty facilities, unfriendly staff, expensive and poorly ventilated. $70 a month for dirty mirrors, water all over the bathrooms, and visible dirt and dust on the floor of the studio. Always felt sick after leaving because of the poor ventilation, not to mention the roof in the studio is rotting away with water damage. Went in on the last day of the month and was informed of the 30 day cancellation policy--my mistake for thinking I could cancel with one day notice but at that point I could no longer afford the monthly cost and was feeling optimistic. The front desk person LAUGHED IN MY FACE and rudely joked "yeah you're about a month late" to cancel without being charged for the next month. Extremely unprofessional and just weird behavior. No one should be laughed at for wanting to cancel their membership! This interaction made me feel so uncomfortable that I was charged $70 for the month I wanted canceled but I definitely will not be using this gym...will just eat the $70 and learn my lesson! Extra fees: They charge $15 a month to pause your membership. They charge a $25 maintenance fee on your 3rd month which makes that bill ~$95. I've been going to this BHAC since September '16. The gym is about average size compared to others in the area and has about the same equipment as others. However, it is slightly more affordable. It's not cheap but it is cheaper than BSC and I would say that even though the Allston BSC has more lifting machines, this BHAC has better equipment overall. The only comparable gym I can think of that is cheaper is GymIt. However, this BHAC seems to have invested in a lot of functional type of equipment that you would only expect to find at a Cross Fit or boot camp type of place. Prowlers, kettle bells, medicine balls, box jump stations, etc. They even have a sledgehammer lol. You don't see this equipment much at non specialty gyms. I have never been to their classes but they seem to have a wide variety. They have spinning, yoga, circuit training, etc. I have not used their trainers but everyone working there has been very nice and helpful when I needed it. I've seen the trainers working with people and they seem to take advantage of the functional equipment I mentioned above. I think this is good since pushing a prowler gives the novice trainee more functional strength than say going through a bunch of machines. It looks like they focus on mobility, strength, and conditioning which is what any novice trainee would need to progress further in a balanced way. I think all memberships give you the option to use any BHAC in town. I have been to the ones in North End and North Station and was not very impressed with those due to the smaller size and older equipment. But at least you have the option. This particular BHAC is the best one I've been to so far. All in all, I'd say this gym is slightly more affordable and just as good as other gyms in the area. They have the equipment and knowledgeable trainers to accommodate many different goals from fat loss to body building. I'd say they've invested more in the functional training stuff than other similar gyms and this is where they stand out to me. So if you want to take an approach similar to Cross Fit where you focus on functional strength, endurance, and power this gym has practically all the equipment. read more

I initially only became a member here because it's right across the street from where I live, but I've been going to BHAC for over a year now and I absolutely love it! Even though it's not the biggest or fanciest gym, it has everything you need to get in a good workout, and then some. For the basics, they have free weights, kettlebells all sorts of machines, various cardio equipment, bosu balls, exercise balls, bands, jump ropes and more. They also have more specialized equipment like TRX, a sled, a tire, chains, and more. Recently, they also got an air bike and a dedicated hip thrust bench! Although I've never utilized them, they have a spin room with regular classes and a boxing room. They also have a studio where they have a variety of group classes. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful, and I never have a problem with the gym being too crowded (although I don't usually go during peak hours). One thing I absolutely love about this gym is that there are so many women who frequent the free weights section. That definitely made it much less intimidating for me to get into strength training which I now love. Overall, I highly recommend! read more

I switched to BHAC from Healthworks when I moved to Brighton from Brookline. To be honest, my decision was based purely on the convenient location to my house. With that said, I've never had an issue here. I was a little apprehensive about joining a unisex gym after my 5 years at Healthworks but it's really not a big deal at all. There are people of all sizes and shapes which makes working out less intimidating. The locker rooms are clean and barebones but not rundown. The locking mechanism on the lockers takes a little to get used to ... maybe it's user error. The staff are helpful but not in your face. No up-selling. read more

This gym gives a great bang for your buck in Boston. Their Cleveland Circle location is right on the Sutherland Road B-Line stop, and the space is open and airy. The equipment is diverse and well-maintained, save for two or three cracked dumbbells. Fellow members are respectful of your space and (usually) of the equipment. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, keeps everything in good working order, and offers very competitive training packages. While there are complimentary classes, such as yoga and kickboxing, I have yet to attend any - though I definitely hope to someday. Towels are available at the front desk, as well as occasional analgesic ointments or energy bars. Each locker room (I presume) includes benches, hooks, lockers (but no locks), restrooms, hair dryers, a steam room, and showers. My only criticisms are the hours and the showers. As more of a night owl, I'd rather they closed a little later than 10 pm on weekdays and 7 pm on weekends. Also, during minor holidays, their hours are so narrow that they may as well be closed. As for the showers, the one time I used them, the water was frigid. The staff later attributed this to an issue with the water heater - no big deal. read more

I recently joined the BHAC location in Brighton near Cleveland Circle. I had previously been a member of another gym in the area, but I wanted something that was a little closer to home. Enter the BHAC. They've got pretty good hours, and contrary to what other reviewers have said, I've never had an issue waiting for equipment after 6:00 pm. In fact, I've been finding it pretty empty every weekday evening. Regardless, they've got a good amount of cardio equipment, clean locker rooms, and a sauna. Yes, the monthly fee may be a little more expensive than other gyms in the area, but there's no joining fee and most of the classes (spin, yoga, Zumba, etc.) are included with the membership cost. So basically, if you're looking for a gym in the Cleveland Circle area, the BHAC is where it's at! read more

This gym has everything you need! There's a spin studio (with good instructors!) and a good variety of free weights, bands, machines, and cardio equipment. It's impressive how they managed to use the main floor to place equipment everywhere without it feeling overwhelming or disorganized. There's also yoga/dance and boxing studios. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the location in a quiet neighborhood guarantees you'll come across the same friendly faces, which creates a sense of community, if you're into that! read more

Re: Comm Ave Location (near Washington & Comm) It's well maintained clean place to workout. Modern equipment with good upkeep on maintenance. I'm more of an off peak hours user so for me it's never too crowded. Yes, there are cheaper gyms around but you get what you pay for and they are worth the price. I don't really utilize all they have to offer (cross fit, cycling, etc.) but for the free weights and machines they are quite solid. My only criticism (and this is most gyms) is that they like to close on a lot of holidays or close early which I get but they also sometimes close/close early on the non-holiday holidays like new years eve and similar. read more

This gym is VERY overpriced for what you get. You also have to pay a member fee. They have terrible hours. Classes are only available if you are a typical 9-5er. No parking. Some over used equipment. No WiFi connection that works for streaming your music. And forget about going during the holidays (when you need/want to go to the gym the most). Christmas Eve they closed at 2pm and the day after Christmas they closed at 4pm. You don't find out until you get to gym in person of course because leaving a voicemail with holidays hours clearly is too much work/too much money for them. Im in the medical field so fitness is important to me but I don't have 8am-2pm off. I don't have Christmas vacation. I don't understand how this gym functions in a city with such crappy hours and quality of service. I'd rather go back to BSC Allston for $30/month with parking included. read more

I moved to Boston as an already devout lifter. Before coming here, I worried that I wouldn't be able to find a suitable gym for my goals. I had visited a number of gyms in Boston through past travels and was always pretty unimpressed. Enter BHAC: this place has every piece of equipment that I needed to keep progressing. A dedicated free weight section, fully outfitted with three squat racks, three benches, a dumbbell rack, a generous kettlebell spread, multiple turf sections, a tire, a GHD, a sled/prowler, resistance bands, chains: you name it. They even have a reverse hyperextension machine. If you cannot gain muscle or cut fat at this gym, it is certainly not for want of equipment or dedicated space for accomplishing it. It's rare to see a gym with half its square footage devoted to functional fitness in a city like Boston. In my 1.5 years here, they have continued to improve and add equipment that both 1) members want, and 2) that the staff believe will aid members in their quest for fitness, whatever aspect of fitness that may be. And that is a direct outgrowth of one irreplaceable aspect of this gym: I truly believe that the staff cares about its members progressing along their fitness and wellness journeys. Everyone on this staff is very friendly and approachable, and I watch them everyday try to improve their own understanding and training methods so that they can better serve both their personal training clients and the average member. They serve and oversee the fitness quests of such a broad spread of interests: cardio, yoga, bodybuilding, boxing--and somehow make all these groups feel welcome and like they have their own space and resources for their daily practice. I wouldn't say this gym is for one certain type of gym member: it's for any person who wants the space to grow and pursue their own specific range of interests within a supportive fitness environment. read more

Recently, I canceled my Boston Sports Club membership after 15 or so years and just signed up with Beacon Hill Athletic Club. Thus far, I am happy with the change. Beacon Hill Athletic Club is quiet from time to time with flexible hours, which allows me to get stress free workouts without the gym being over crowded (like the few remaining Boston Sports Clubs). Beacon Hill Athletic Club's price is higher than what I used to pay but I am more than happy to price out College Students to have more relaxing workouts without the gym being constantly packed. The Cleveland Circle location is amazing to me because I can walk without having to hop on the T or drive. I never got to experience the gym pre-covid but during covid they take their protocols seriously, which is appreciated. The staff does everything they can do to ensure everyone complies with the mask requirement, disinfects machines, and stays spaced out. Being able to open the very large windows is another great feature. Thus far, I am happy with my new gym membership. The biggest negative is the selection of equipment. The selection is not as vast as what I am accustomed to from the Boston Sports Club and the New York Sports Club chains. Although, currently beggars cannot be choosers when the other option is a jam-packed gym at all times that is operating at reduced hours. The lack of selection of equipment I would easily trade for the covid protocols, flexible hours, quiet times, and pricing that reduces the amount of people working out. read more

Great gym with a great location. They have laundry for facilities - though I'm not sure who goes to the gym long enough for a wash AND dry, but I'm sure some people do. The bathrooms are always clean and well kept. Fresh towels right when you walk in. The staff are always really helpful and not intimidating. If I want to try something new I can just go up and ask. I've been goIng to this gym for 4 months and I'm a big fan. The staff is both friendly and helpful, always willing to answer any questions you may have, give tutorials on any and all equipment, go over class schedules and what to expect, etc. I usually go on the late side during the week, and midday on weekends. Not once has the gym been overcrowded, which is nice: never had to wait for any of the elliptical/weight training machines. The clientele all seem respectful of each other, which is a bonus for a total novice like myself. I was expecting an aggressive, competitive kind of vibe: not the case. Very chill atmosphere. Everyone seems to be doing their own thing. As far as price/amenities: all good. Cheaper than most gyms in Boston. The locker rooms are nice and well-maintained. I've yet to take any classes, but they seem to offer quite a few. I hope to attend one soon. read more

I will second what someone else said about having a like/hate relationship with this gym. I joined out of necessity as a long distance runner who occasionally wants to move winter workouts indoors, take some classes, and do some weight lifting. It's literally across the street from my apartment, so If I go before 5pm on weeknights, I can get a squat rack or a cardio machine. After 5pm, forget it. Weekends are hit or miss. Every single time I go, at least one person is dropping weights on the ground heavy enough to shake the floor, and the staff never addresses this. The hours are not great. They don't open till 6am on weekdays and 8am on weekends. Others complained about them not being open late enough, yet I don't think they're open early enough. You can't sign up for classes online, and spin does fill up. Having to call or sign up in-person is archaic. The wi-fi doesn't work but they tout it as a selling point. If you find paper towels, great but you won't find cleaning spray in the same location - it's always either/or. and I assume that's why no one wipes down machines after using them. No bumper plates, most equipment is old and outdated. The mats in the exercise and stretching rooms are downright disgusting and missing chunks all over. Most of the women's lockers do not actually lock (you have to bring your own lock, but the doors still don't close correctly). It's been really hot and steamy in the gym this summer and the AC could be turned down about 10 degrees. Otherwise, it is what it is - a gym in Boston. The classes are pretty good and the gym is big. It is one of the most expensive gyms in the area, topped only by CSC and the fancy new chains in Chestnut Hill. The Y and BSC are half or even less than half what BHAC charges. For what we pay each month, I wish they'd update the equipment, turn down the AC in the summer, and make it easier to clean up after yourself. read more

To be clear: this review is for the Beacon Hill Athletic Club Cleveland Circle location at 1686 Commonwealth Ave, Brighton, MA. The Good: + It is close to many apartments in the student ghetto that is Brighton. + It is close to the Sutherland Road Green Line B stop. The Bad: - They charge between $60-80/month for a gym membership. Why is this bad? Because if you lived in many other places in the Boston area, you would be paying $20-40/month for identical quality product. For example, Planet Fitness or Workout World are of comparable quality to this gym, but charge 50-75% less. Why can this gym charge so much? Location. You're not checking out this gym because you want to. You're checking out this gym because you live within walking distance to it. - Businesses that have more employee turnover than the Beacon Hill Athletic Club Cleveland Circle: McDonalds. That's about it. Along the wall of the gym are photographs and a brief biography of employees. A fun game to play the first time you're at the gym is "How many of these photos are of ex-employees?" Hint: it's over 50%. Why is this a concern for a prospective gym member? Well, if people don't want to work there, you have to figure there's something wrong behind the scenes. Bad management? Bad employee work environment? Who knows. Something is wrong. - The gym has really average trainers. When is average bad? When you want the guy/girl you're paying $60/hour to train you to be Adonis so you have a physical ideal to aspire to. There's a problem when you look around the gym and 75% of the people you see are buffer/more fit than the trainers. I don't know where they recruited their trainers from, but it sure ain't where Equinox hires their trainers from. Oh, and eavesdrop on their trainers if you get the chance. Some of the mis-information they provide to their clients is atrocious. The Ugly: - Do you like "Out of Order" signs? Because if you do, I know of the gym for you! I guarantee when you tour the facility, there will be at least one treadmill/cycle/elliptical/stair climber/some piece of equipment that has an Out of Order sign on it. Do you know how I can make that guarantee? Because I have never gone to the gym and not seen a piece of equipment that was Out of Order. - Their stretch room. If you live in the Brighton area (which you do, because you're not considering this gym if you live in a nicer area), then your tiny ass bedroom is bigger than their stretch room. If you're ever unlucky enough to be in the stretch room with 2 or more people, then you will soon learn what their body scent is. There's no other option. You will be on top of each other. - Their locker size. Whoever said that size doesn't matter hasn't ever had to try to pack their gym bag, a jacket, and shoes into their lockers. They're tiny... like "shit, is his dick an innie??" tiny. The summary: If you are reading this review, then I'm willing to bet that I know (within a 5 minute walk) where you live. No one else goes to the gym except for people who are unfortunate enough to live in the area. That should be your first sign that this gym is not exactly the best bang for your buck. Look, if you have another option to go to another gym, TAKE IT AND RUN. If you're stuck paying an exorbitant monthly fee for a subpar product, then I feel for you. read more

Clean towels, new machines and toilets. That's about all BHAC has going, at least at the Comm. Ave. location. The gym is poorly lit. Weird shadows and not enough mirrors make it seem like a warehouse throwback to the Industrial Revolution. The awkwardly placed, mysterious metal boxes on the floor make walking an adventure. There's an 8" concrete ledge on the floor near the free-weights that adds to the irregularity of the space. The ellipticals, stationary bikes and treadmills are so cramped the guy on the next machine tossed his head back and sprayed sweat on me. I'm not squeamish, but I'm money-conscious enough NOT to pay $64 a month to be sprinkled in a stranger's sweat. (Not including $29 signup fee.) Then there's the "abs and stretching" room. This tiny, 15' x 15' space has no mirrors (!) and an overabundance of exercise balls. So many, in fact, that only three or four people can comfortably set up mats. Needless to say, when some noob tried to skip rope tonight, there was no room to do anything other than wait outside until he was done trying, failing and untangling the rope from his ankles. The locker rooms are even more poorly designed. First, where are the doors? Second, to the staff of the BHAC: LADIES LIKE THE OPTION TO SIT WHILE GETTING DRESSED! There is a tiny bench in a nook big enough for two people, and two more in the doorway of the bathroom. In the doorway? I'd rather tip and wobble and lean to get my clothing on than risk compromising my precious post-workout modesty. I've been to efficient, well-designed gyms in spaces much smaller than what the BHAC occupies. Any logistics people looking for work? The BHAC needs you. read more

Having experienced many gyms here and there, I would definitely give this one 5 stars. Why? Well, I think it's very important for a gym to have the following attributes: 1) Clean/sanitary equipment and facilities 2) Quantity and variety of equipment available 3) Quality of classes Because this place is brand new, practically, the first two categories are very well met. The place is immaculate and everything is NEW. They have the newest elliptical machines and weight machines. I've taken a bunch of their classes and think that they are great, so #3 is taken care of as well. They have their own separate room for stretching, which is awesome. Also, you really get your money's worth. They have a lounge with internet connection and big leather couches to sit on as well as lots of magazines to choose from, and laundry facilities if you want to do your laundry while gymming it. Overall, 5 stars for $64/month (which is what I pay.) It's WAY better than the BSC, I can tell you that much. read more

For 64 dollars a month I get a ton of cardio machines, weight machines, and free weights. What more could a girl ask for? Well, I could ask for an arc trainer, but I suppose I'll take the cross ramp if I have to. In Boston it's hard to find a happy medium of cheap but sanitary and in good shape. This being the case you often find very expensive gyms/spas in pristine condition or really dumpy gyms where all the machines are broken and there's MRSA on everything. Enter Beacon Hill Athletic Club- moderately priced with everything you need to work out with no added frills. I only go and do my own work outs, but they also have a full schedule of classes that always seem packed, so I'm assuming they're good. They also have personal trainers that you can work with for an added fee, not sure what the fee is, but it could be worthwhile if you need that added push to get going. I always go right after work and never have to wait for machines even during the "rush hour" of gym times, I love this gym and will continue going here while I'm living in Boston! read more

I've been going to BHAC in Cleveland Circle since the summer, and I've been really happy going there! It's incredibly close to where I live (so no excuses!) and it's a pretty decent-sized gym. It's definitely not huge, but there are a lot of cardio machines (treadmills, crossramps, etc) and a lot of free weights/weight machines. There is also a boxing studio, spinning room, and general class room. I normally go right after work and even though it's the most crowded time of the day, I can usually get on a machine right away. The gym is also really clean and the crowd is very decent. People tend to keep to themselves and are very considerate of keeping it clean. I've never felt uncomfortable working out there, whether doing cardio or free weights or stretching, which is definitely really key. The staff is also really friendly and attentive, so its an added bonus for sure! Lastly, they've got a wide variety of classes offered (varieties of yoga, spinning, zumba, kickboxing/boxing, etc). I've only been able to try Zumba with Ketty, and I absolutely love it!! She's such a great, high energy instructor and her class is always full, it seems like everyone there loves her and is loyal to her classes. It's a very open community and even though I feel like I look crazy, again, I'm happy to say I've never felt judged there! My only wish is that there were more classes offered at later times, at least for Zumba since the classes are always full. A girl can dream! read more

I just went for my first workout of 2008, in my new gym that opened next-door to me. The hour and fifteen minutes that I spent inside the Cleveland Circle BHAC were very enjoyable. The machines are new and easy to use, and as of yet, the place has not gotten too crowded. My one complaint was the bathrooms. They did not provide much seating for changing. In the women's bathroom, there is just one bench in front of one corner of the lockers, and that is all. I know there isn't much space, but I can see this becoming a problem when the gym gets busy. Overall, I liked the experience, and I am looking forward to attending a few of their classes. I'll update as I learn more about them. EDITED: I wanted to add, that now I have been attending for awhile, I am not as satisified as I thought I was. There really isn't enough room to stretch and do sit-ups. The small room they designated for personal stretching fills up quickly and its hard to find space without hitting someone. They need to get rid of the lounge and use the space. I never see anyone use it other than the workers. This gym is just too small. read more

I'm hesitant to be honest with this review and give it the praise it deserves because then more people might join and compete with me for space and class. But, this is yelp, and yelp is all about word of mouth. I joined this gym when my membership at BU FitRec was up for renewal and I had moved further away from the Allston area --- to right across the street from Beacon Hill Athletic Club. When I joined they were running their promo that waives the signup fee, so that was sweet. For $64/month, this gym is a great deal. I don't know where people are looking at gyms, but most gyms I've checked out in the past are around $90 a month, and aren't as spacious and clean as this one (ex. Gold's Gym in Kenmore or BSC in Allston --- those places were dank). Anyway, it's been a month since I've joined, and one goal I had was to try out as many classes as I could to spice up my workout. I'll highlight three that I have taken a liking to. First, I've fallen in love with spinning. They offer many classes (2-3 a day) and have many instructors, both male and female. I've found that the female instructors don't really follow a true scale of resistance and just kind of have you wail away on the bike regardless of whether you're on a 4 or an 8, so I prefer the male instructors. I just tried the kickboxing class last night and it kicked my a$$. It's a great workout. I've been keeping at yoga, trying to get into it to increase my flexibility, and I like how unassuming the classes are. It's my first time ever trying yoga, and I definitely look out of place in the class, but I never feel it. The gym is never full when I go (around 6-9ish). I only lift weights when I'm not taking classes, so I can't really comment on the cardio equipment. As for the weights, I guess the gym is relatively new so the equipment are as well. I agree with the people who said that that step thing near the wall is useful for stretching, doing lunges, pushups, whatever. I don't really use the locker room so I can't really comment on it. One last note, most of the clientele are young professionals, so that's a pro for joining if you are one yourself. The staff are all really friendly. Overall, for $64/month, you get a lot of great services and amenities at this gym, and if you live in the area and want a chill place to work out, this is the place for you. read more

They were charging me for over two years after canceling my membership. I only discovered this after getting a new card with a new number and receiving an email from beacon hill athletic clubs with "your payment didn't go through". I guess I should pay attention to my monthly bank statements- lesson learned! They declined to give me a refund asking for a piece of paper as proof that I cancelled my membership from over two years ago. They did finally cancel the membership and wiped the charges for the month of May after refusing to do so the first time I called, saying "we can't do that at this time". Will not be recommending this gym to friends and will not be going back. read more

I have been going to Beacon Hill Athletic Club for the past several years. The employees seem happy to be there and have almost zero turnover; I have seen the same employees there since I first started coming. I have found this them to be a very helpful and well trained staff. The club manager Mark DiBattista is very hands on, and can often be seen checking in on regulars and tinkering with the AMT machines making sure all of the equipment is in top shape. Over the years I have come to know Mark well, and he is a dedicated and knowledgeable individual, and often checks in on my progress towards my goals and offers motivation. The staff is constantly cleaning and sanitizing benches and equipment, and keeping it about as clean an environment as you can have in a gym. Since I began personal training in September, 5 months ago, I have greatly increased my strength and agility, and lost 18 lbs. Each workout is different, and Mark, who is my trainer, follows up to hold me accountable and make sure I am getting in between sessions. Furthermore, new equipment is being constantly added, and each expansion brings new opportunities to expand and vary workouts. This might be the only gym on the planet with 8 AMT machines (the most advanced ellipticals on the market), and with their fleet of machines I have never had to wait to jump in, a constant frustration when I was a member of the Y in Brighton. They also have many classes, but as I have not been in any I can't report on them. As a longtime customer, I cannot say enough good things about this gym. read more

Alright here's the deal. I don't do new years reolutions. My new gym (Beacon Hill Athletic Club in Brighton) just happened to open on the first day of the first month of the new year. Let me remind you: I don't do new years resolutions. This gym is remarkable in my opionion. The equipment is brand-spankin' new. There is a lot of space to stretch, private lessons available, lots of natural light (which is a huge plus for me) and the joining fee was relatively inexpensive ($29 pre-opening). It helps that I work later hours than most other people because there has never been more than a handful of others in there at the same time. Although I did technically start working out in this gym right after the new year (I was strictly a runner previous to 2008) I swear to you a "new years resolution" was not a connsidering influential factor to me hitting the weights. I do feel great right now (dripping sweat onto my keyboard) and I love this new gym. The only thing it lacks is a swimming pool and a tennis court. I guess we can't have our cake and eat it oo (especially when we're working out eh)? But much like a micro-manger will say "I am not a micro-manger", "I do not do new years resolutions". Beacon Hill Athletic Club Cleveland circle has seen zero improvements / fixes to equipment in several months. I've mentioned numerous times to the manager, Mark D and there are many broken machines/machines that have defective parts, that have not been repaired in months with no clear timeline of when they will be fixed. I have left many comments in the comment boxes with no results. It's frustrating because I do think the staff and hours of the gym are fantastic, but it's difficult because the equipment has not been fixed in months, especially around the busiest time of year (NYE resolutions) when you would think it's at the forefront of management's mind. read more

I am truly disappointed with this gym. The facilities are nice, however if you like to take classes they don't have enough options. They don't have any daytime classes. No Pilates, hardly any yoga, and some pretty terrible classes on the current schedule. It seems like they cancel too many classes every time there is a holiday. I understand Christmas and NYE but to go and cancel classes the whole weekend is wrong. People join the gym because they want to work out.! Its wrong not to be open regular hours after the holiday and to cancel not hold regular classes the whole following weekend. read more

I was going to the Y in Oak Sq when I first moved to the Brighton area and needless to say I was not impressed. I could never get a machine, always crowded and kids were around constantly. My BF and I noticed a gym right across the street from out Apartment so we decided to leave the Y and join Beacon Hill. Easily the best decision we have made. This gym is never too crowded and I am always able to get a solid work out. They have multiple classes that are never overpopulated (another problem with the Y). The only reason I did not give this gym 4 stars is because the cardio machines are a bit outdated other then that the price, location and staff are great. read more

Pros: -towel service (although a little bleach could go a long way) -surprisingly good yoga for a gym (w/some more props, it would be as good as a studio since all the teachers are phenom and actually teach at some of the best studios around) -open space (garage door opens for cool summer/spring nights + skylights) -everyone's doing their own thing (i.e., not a meat market) -good hours, open during most holidays -clean -no BS when it comes to sign-up/fees Cons: -cliche marketing ("bathing suit season is coming"...yawn) -for some odd reason, no classes are scheduled on Mondays or Fridays -there are more, and more varied classes in the afternoon/evening...mornings--not so much. read more

I joined this gym for convenience, but I love it because of all it has to offer. The people who work here are friendly, the other members are friendly but not intrusive, and the machines are always in good condition, though very busy during peak hours, but the most I've had to wait for an elliptical is 10 minutes. I have been coming to this gym since the summer but my parents have been coming since around the time it opened. The last gym I was a member of was Healthworks, which cost over 100$ a month so obviously I'm not expecting most gyms to compare to it. I was looking for something cheaper and more serious(less housewives standing around) and this place was perfect. The gym is not huge but it has many machines, a boxing studio, yoga studio, spinning room, and weight room. Bonus, it includes a sauna which I have yet to use. Compared to a previous Beacon Hill Athletics Club in Brookline Village I was a member of for a brief period of time, it is a castle. I notice that a lot of people are there everyday, which motivates me. However, an elliptical is always open for me to use as well as any other machine I would like to. People are really good about cleaning their machines after use and are friendly to other gym goers. The clientele tends to be graduate age/ late 20s. Classes are offered everyday and they are all free except for Afterburn. However, you can try your first Afterburn free. The Vinyasa Yoga class I went to was invigorating and gave me an intense workout! I wish some of the classes were offered later at night though. I did a few training sessions and they were great, better than the ones I did at Healthworks. My trainer not only taught me exercises to target core areas, she also measured things such as my muscle mass and gave me eating advice! All the staff are approachable and friendly. read more

This gym offers a lot of equipment and varied classes. I usually attend classes and they are challenging enough to be interesting. The schedule of classes also enables me to go there at least 5 days a week. I take one star off because the thermostat is always set too high. The gym does not feel chilly enough and you tend to warm up a lot during activities. The instructors have control over the temperature though, so there isn't much that can be done about that. read more
