Small neighborhood gym with high prices/month. The space is small with to much equipment. You should expect to be friendly or be awkward as you will see the same faces each day and expect lines on equipment in busy times. $70/month is to much for this. The equipment leaves much to be desired and I have had treadmills shutdown completely during runs on multiple occasions. Also the floor is uneven in multiple spots in this gym which is at minimum annoying and possibly a safety concern if you are doing heavy lifts. This place costs $70 a month in membership fees and I think the only justification for that is the location: There is nothing else close by. read more

I've been to this gym multiple times in 2010, and the equipment was new and there were not a lot of members there, so it did not feel cramped. Fast forward 13 years later. The locker room is dirty, the equipment has not been replaced since 2010. Also, there is a long wait for machines and other weightlifting equipment. The sauna has been broken for a long time. In my two week trip, I needed some gym access to counterbalance my vacation diet and this spot fit my needs. They offer week passes for $50 something, which was perfect! The only downsides is they are quite small and don't have much in the way of equipment. A few squat racks, way too many cardio things, a small select of free weights, and some weight machines. It is by no means a place to become a great bodybuilder or powerlifter if you're into that (like myself). Brookline, and most of Boston, seems to lack big box gyms, so this gyms was good in a pinch. read more

Unfortunately, they kept charging me for months even after I cancelled my membership. 9 months of paying $69.00. Honestly mainly just giving stars for location, as it is the only gym within a mile of my house. Otherwise, this is probably the worst gym I've belonged to. The womens' locker room has ranged from having broken stalls to leaking ceilings. The gym itself is small and so doesn't have much equipment options. The towels are frequently stained/dirty. And the weekend hours are tough if you like to workout later. For $70/month I just feel that everything should be better quality. read more

In general the gym is grossly overpriced for what it offers. The equipment is poorly maintained (mismatched benches, not enough plates), there is a general lack of strength training equipment, the strength area is cramped, and the floors are dirty (don't look down when you are in the squat cage). In addition to all this, the contract includes hidden fees which the membership office doesn't advertise during sign-up. As other reviews have stated, cancellation is difficult. Definitely one of the better gyms out of the selection I've seen in Brookline so far. The crowds are never too crazy (even on weeknights right after work), and nearly everyone there follows good gym etiquette. I feel very comfortable being there as a female who is confident in a gym environment. The space is smaller but they maximize use of it in how all of the equipment is placed. The equipment isn't new but in decent condition. There's a large range of free weights and kettle bells, not too many squat racks or benches though. I've been a member for a year. Beacon Hill Athletic Club is convenient, always has fresh towels, good equipment and well functioning TV. The staff is there. They're neither friendly nor unfriendly. They watch their phones and do laundry. Maybe that's ok but I paid less per month and always encountered friendly staff at the Huntington YMCA. Also, the men's locker room is cold. Carpet would help. And reliable supply of Kleenex & shower soap. read more

Needed a gym to go to while Boston gyms were shutdown due to COVID. It IS a smaller gym however the club had everything I needed. Staff was extremely friendly. Lauren was fantastic, always greeted me upon arrival and would ask how my workout was upon me leaving. If you're in the Brookline/Longwood area and are looking for a more community based gym definitely check them out. If you need personal training, ask for Will or Ryan, they will get you sorted in no time. read more

Yeah, it's small. It used to be a half-assed CVS that never stocked anything. The staff is friendly enough, and the price is right. It gets crowded, but I've never had to wait for any machine. The class schedule sucks. All the good ones seem to be at noon. This is the kind of gym where you show up, work out, and get the hell out as quickly as possible. I used to belong to Healthworks, and I got waaaay spoiled, so that's my baggage. This is a bare-bones gym: machines, weights, and a workout room. I would almost say this location was the bastard stepchild of the chain, but at least the machines were purchased in the 21st century-- the Newton location, however is probably the worst one I've been to. Honestly, if it wasn't so damn close to my place, I wouldn't have joined. There's a women-only Fitness Unlimited that's about half the price down the block, but it smells really skanky. This location also seems to have a surplus of old white guys working out in v-neck undershirts and knee-high black socks. So if you like 'em old and wrinkled, ladies, this here is your pickup nirvana. read more

I love this gym. The staff are very friendly and well-informed. The classes are diverse. The equipment and space are always well-maintained, clean, and organized. Plus, it is a very conveniently located gym, situation right in the heart of Brookline Village. I've been a member for nearly 15 years. I've tried Equinox, Heatlhworks, and Benefitness. None of those gyms have accessible, approachable, informed, and attentive staff. read more

*This is for the 279 Washington location only.* Best 3 words to sum up the women's locker room: dirty, broken, and moldy. I work out at a different location, but used this one last week before meeting friends in Brookline. Because it's a chain, I assumed the quality from gym to gym wouldn't vary much. Wrong. The locker room is tiny, carpet is dirty and worn, but the showers are the worst. There is MOLD growing in the grout of the tiles on the wall and black mildew on the bottom of the shower curtain. The shower caddy was completely rusted and belonged in the garbage. The shower head is messed up as well. You can either stand under a trickle of warm water, or have normal water pressure and a cold shower. If someone flushes the toliet, all bets are off. After taking the quickest shower of my life while trying not to touch anything, I checked out the other 3 shower stalls and saw that they were all in the same condition. Want to just relax in the sauna? Sorry, that's broken too. I realize most people shower at home after working out. Regardless, part of your membership $ is going towards the "upkeep" of the locker room. If you must shower here, bring your college shower shoes and a strong anti-bacterial soap. BHAC owner, stop being cheap. Fix the shower heads, toss the shower caddies, replace the shower curtains, and spend $2 on a bottle of bleach and a scrub brush. read more

I've been a member of BHAC for over two years I think and I've been going to this location for at least a year. I think it is a great value gym for me! Things I love: affordable pricing, perfect location & functioning tvs with cable... I had to choose (budget-wise) between cable and the gym... I chose the gym. Luckily, I usually get to watch my favorite shows so I sort of still feel like I have cable. I also like that there is never a wait for my necessary machines (or anyone else's for that matter) (lots of treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and some weird elliptical type machine with more flexible feet). There are weights too and all those other machines, but I don't use them too much, I'll admit. Also, lots of good light from the big windows. I like the staff, they always treat me well. Once they even found a purse I left behind in a post-workout daze...it was returned with my cash and credit card. That says they are good people, right? Since I joined, I've lost 23 lbs and I can now run over 3.5 miles (which is big for me, let me tell you!) Possible areas for improvement? I use my comment cards for those! Women's locker room is distinctly gym-like. (But the toilets have always been clean). It can occasionally get a little messy with towels/paper towels if people aren't picking up after themselves, but works fine for what it is. The complimentary towels could be a little softer - but I could also bring my own! I like the slogan too... come as you are, leave feeling better... I think that is it, always makes me feel good! read more

The only thing worse than this gym's equipment is the customer service. For $70 per month, I'd expect the dumb bells to be in one piece. Instead, the rubber is falling off half of them. The benches don't provide any cushion, and are uncomfortable to use while bench pressing. There are only two bench racks and two squat racks. Good luck using equipment during peak hours. After they suspended service, they reopened and only sent a single email to notify me. I moved outside of the state during covid, and they refused to cancel my service over the phone. I've already paid for three months of a service I haven't used at all, and they expect me to pay another month to close out my account. read more

I have been a member of BHAC for a little over a year now. I attend the Brookline Village location about 3-4 times a week and have only positive things to say about it. It is a neighborhood gym that is full of familiar faces and friendly greetings. The classes are diverse and there are plenty of them. I attend the core conditioning class and the body weight blitz classes regularly. Additionally, I meet with Will for personal training sessions which are undoubtedly beneficial for my better understand of excising. The workouts themselves are great, but the Community makes it even greater. I can always count on the staff for a friendly greeting and a spot when I need it. When considering his gym, remember it's location. This gym is conveniently located on the D branch of the green line and it has a parking lot ($10/month) that makes commuting easy. How do you choose a good gym? I guess if you keep coming back for a workout, it's good. Sounds simple. How many of you are reading this review because you used to be a member somewhere, and for one reason or another you stopped going? Maybe it's the location, maybe the place was dirty, maybe you just got lazy. My point is, I started coming here over a month ago, and I look forward to working out at least four times a week. After all, the good gym is the one that gets you in the best shape. BHAC accomplishes that for me. I don't take classes, I don't do personal training. I'm strictly a cardio and weight training guy. In and out in 45 minutes. The locker room is clean. The machines all work. Despite the small size, I never have to wait for equipment even during peak hours. The towels are clean, the staff is friendly, and the price is right. Why not 5 stars? I once had a membership at a much nicer club that cost over twice as much, but you can imagine it was bigger and better. Granted, I never went to the pool, played tennis, went to the spa, nor ate at the restaurant. So the 5 star amenities were wasted on me. Four star BHAC suits me just fine. read more

This is for the Brookline location. I was a member of this gym for about a year and a half, close to two years and recently cancelled. I don't really have terrible things to say about it but I don't have great things to say either. The equipment is fairly old and could use some updating. They do have classes but I find them to not be that frequent or during hours I would be able to make them. Seems like the last classes of the days are usually 7pm and I get out of work at 6pm so my options were very limited. As an avid spinner I found I never could make it to a class. You're paying $64/mo which isn't bad at all, but if you can't make use of the classes it doesn't give value to the gym in my opinion. I was fine just using the machines but then started realizing that the cost is a bit much for using a treadmill. When I cancelled it wasn't really clear what my last day was when I was in person and they told me a manager would be in touch. Never heard and had to reach out to them to confirm the cancellation and end date. Just showed they didn't really care much which is a good description of the gym in general. Super easy sign up/cancellation policies so that's pretty good. read more

I've been a member of BHAC for almost a year now. I joined because it was close to me, offered all the amenities I wanted (nice equipment, variety of weights, classes, towels, etc) and because they provide a discount for those working in Boston-area hospitals. I usually go to the gym about 2-4 times per week. Over the past year I've seen the gym make many improvements including new treadmills, refinished floors in the group exercise room, and new yoga equipment. It's consistently clean, the staff is very friendly, and you begin to recognize people from the community. I frequently attend the core conditioning, kettlebell, and vinyasa yoga classes which are some of the best I've encountered. Hopefully they'll renovate the bathroom/locker area soon and get new scales. One thing they could do is to improve communication with those who regularly attend classes - occasionally a class will get canceled and we're not made aware unless you go to the gym and find out. Maybe some sort of text alert or facebook notification would fix this? Overall, I highly recommend BHAC for anyone living in the area! It's a great gym! read more

I've been a member of this gym for 8 years, and generally go twice a week. It's a small, friendly neighborhood gym - I like recognizing the faces (some young, some not so young) and exchanging a quick hello with staff and others. When traveling on business, I often go to other gyms. They are usually really big and really impersonal - and I don't like them. The gym has everything needed for a complete, well-rounded workout - and enough options to provide variety. I worked with two different personal trainers (both excellent) for several years, but am now working out on my own along with an occasional class just to mix it up. The gym is close to my home, so I walk or drive and then return home for shower. The locker room here is small and basic. Overall, this gym works really well for me. It's convenient, pleasant, and very good value. read more

As a new member, I'm extremely pleased with the Brookline Village location and I'd recommend it. Utilizing the gym two to three times a week, I get good value for my membership given the gym's location and the selection of equipment on the training floor. The Staff is friendly and unobtrusive and my fellow gym goers respect the equipment and environment. Another plus is that the gym doesn't tend to get crowded. I can't speak to the classes or to the locker rooms as I don't use either. All-in-all, I'm thrilled to have this gym near to my home. read more

BHAC has great unlimited classes like kettlebell, spin and HIIT/circuits. The instructors really push you to make you make the most use of a quick class. The only reason I didn't give this gym 5 stars is because some of the bikes and equipment are run down or broken. You definitely need to get to spin classes early to set up some of the bikes that are wobbly if you don't take time to adjust them. The bathrooms could also be a little nicer, but for the monthly fees, it's not too bad. The benefits certainly outweigh the negatives! I recommend this gym if you are looking for great classes and reasonable membership dues in a very convenient spot (right in the heart of Brookline Village). I got the 20-workout punch card from Groupon last summer, and enjoyed coming here for some cardio workouts and classes. It's a really small gym with no frills, but everything is kept really clean and tidy, and the staff is friendly. Towel service is nice as well, and they sometimes had free drink samples and whatnot at the front. It never got overwhelmingly crowded, but there were definitely a few times when the machines I wanted to use were being occupied (as a result of the small gym size). As far as the classes go, they were pretty good but not that great or memorable. I've tried some of their cardio/strength interval ones, spinning, and pilates. I DID really like Sarah V. as an instructor though. The gym is a really close walk to the Brookline Village T stop, and the 65 and 66 buses stop right next to it as well. Overall, it's definitely a pretty nice little gym, but at the end of the day it doesn't blow me away. Not that a gym has to "blow me away" for me to want to go to it, but I felt like I got bored easily when working out there. If I am to pay $60 per month for a gym, I ideally want some more exciting class options or more available equipment. 3.5 stars overall, but I definitely don't have anything "bad" to say about BHAC, and maybe they would be perfect at another time/place. read more

I bought a Groupon here (20 workout punch card for like, $25), and I've been pretty happy so far. BHAC is pretty small and bareboned (definitely nothing fancy here), but the staff is friendly, they have TVs all over the place (even personal ones on the treadmills), and have a lot of ellipticals (which, aside from classes, is really the only thing I do at the gym anyways). I go right after work and it gets really crowded so beware during prime time (it is a really cramped space, remember), but I haven't not been able to find an elliptical to use right away yet (it is hard to find one that has the swinging arms though, most are legs-only). Seems like most of the people here (total mixed age group) are in and out with no time for dawdling or socializing and tend to be generally respectful, which is the kind of gym I like. I'm satisfied with my Groupon, but I probably won't join once that expires (mainly because it's a bit out of the way for me on a regular basis... I believe the normal price is pretty reasonable, and it's great if you're not looking for anything fancy). read more

General: I left the all-women's Fitness Unlimited for this place and I couldn't be happier, even though I now pay almost $20 more per month. It's a small gym but I've never had problems getting on a machine and the classes happen to fit perfectly into my schedule. Plus, when I wanted another yoga class during the week, I asked and they started one! Every treadmill gets its own TV and there are plenty of overhead TVs too. They also provide towels, a well-kept shower and locker room, and a friendly greeting from the staff. Classes: If you're an early bird, the morning yoga class on Wed (with Victoria) usually only has 3 people in it and is a great way to start your day. The Saturday morning Iyengar yoga with Karen is also pretty empty. The Sat muscle/abs class will make you hurt for half a week, which is amazing. read more

I've been a member of this club for the last year and a half and am really happy with the decision to have chosen them over other gyms in the Brookline area. BHAC-Brookline is in a great central location, Brookline Village. It is a quick walk from the D-Green Line and right next to the 66 and 65 bus stops. Parking is also available if you get their parking pass, which is totally worth it for those days you don't want to (or can't) walk home. They have a large assortment of cardio and strength training machines. Since I've joined I've seen the gym update machines and equipment before they reach their last stretch and fix anything that breaks. (I also learned that cleaning treadmills is a thing because I see them do it all the time!) It is a well oiled machine which pays off because I always find the machines and equipment I need. The staff is absolutely the best! They're always very friendly and courteous. They're receptive to your feedback and concerns from simple things like turning on the air to bigger things like helping you with your health insurance gym benefit paperwork. Their trainers, some who teach classes, have super diverse certifications (crossfit, mobility, kettlebell, etc.) so it is easy to find someone to train with that can cater to your needs. (Shout out to Ryan!) I'm a huge fan of the diversity of their classes ( I frequent Spin and Kettlebell classes) and the attentiveness of the trainers who teach them. One of the worst gym clubs in Boston. Please avoid. We are a group of medical doctors, fellows in Boston. We started month to month membership as we were living in Brookline. In the beginning it was fine until the staff started being rude with us. There was not enough towels, and bathroom were never clean. The worst is that when we decided to switch gyms, cancellation was very hard. One of us traveled overseas and called/mailed many times requests for cancellation but they kept billing him for 5 months of unused gym. Not ethical, not nice, and we will definitely not recommend this to our colleagues. read more

Good basic gym depending on your workout needs. It's cheaper than the bigger gyms in the area (plus they offer a teacher discount!). Has plenty of cardio equipment, I can usually get the machine I want no matter what time I go. Has some great classes that come with the membership. One small problem is that if there is a class going on, there isn't really extra space to do abs, etc. They have all the equipment I need for lifting, although sometimes the weight area can be crowded so I can't do the workout I want; however, I think that's true of any gym in the area. Probably not the best place for someone with a strict workout plan because of equipment availability during after work hours, but if you're like me and just like to go with the flow when you workout, it's perfect. The only real criticism I have is that the locker room always smells funny, but I don't shower at the gym so it doesn't bother me too much. read more

I go to this gym location during the week because it's in between my work and my apartment. It's a very small location with next to no room to do your own workout, so I'd suggest coming here and using the machines only. I've never had an issue getting an elliptical or any other machine here and I always come during "rush hour", so that's nice. The staff at the front sometimes greet me, but other times they don't. Not a huge deal since I always have my headphones in anyways, but if you're in customer service you should say hello to your customers. The women's locker room is a hot mess. The toilets are installed practically sideways and the locks on the doors don't really work. Overall a good gym for what it is--- get in, work out, get out. read more

It's conveniently located (right off the Brookline Village stop on the D line), is never overwhelmingly crowded, and has all the machines and equipment I need for a well-rounded workout. Poor WIFI and gross locker rooms, but nice workout area, vibe and general mix of people from students to professors to professionals. Great location in Brookline village, but the locker rooms are limited, often out of paper towels. Small and grimy, I only use them if I have to. The WIFI has been a problem for years. They increased rates dramatically promising a revamp, but it's been three years and it still drops out for periods of 10-15 minutes. Honestly, buy a $400 router from Microcenter and get with the 90s. They are convenient to me, and it gets the job done, but it would not cost them a lot to do a whole lot better. Also, they closed the W. Newton location, so one less club for the higher price. read more

Just an all round, good gym. I am a class person (as opposed to a classy person?), I need someone bellowing at me, otherwise I just won't work out to my full potential. Does that make me lazy? They offer a good variety of classes and good times. Sara V. is a little pocket rocket who makes me a puffed & sweaty mess in her interval conditioning class; Andrea is a hoot and mixes things up to keep Spinning interesting; Andres, the cardiobox instructor will whip your b*tt in to shape. It would be better if they had another studio/room for Spin (like the others in the chain do), and they probably do need new/more boxing equipment for cardiobox, but other than that, it serves it purpose. read more

i closed my membership last summer because i thought i was going to move. okay, yes when you cancel you have to be careful about the billing cycle and losing out on money, but i think that is pretty standard business practice when it comes to automatic withdrawal. recently i decided to renew because i was having withdrawals from spin class and hated every other gym i tried in my area. when i went in to renew my account the guy at the desk was super helpful and nice. this is the best gym (and the brighton location) hands down. healthworks is strange, CAC is like, from the 70's in a bad way, and i don't know much about bsc but i wouldn't go there. join beacon hill and take karleen's spin classes. aside from having a really great facility with up to date machines, beacon hill has karleen. and she is awesome. her classes will be the best workout you've ever had, ever. read more

I don't need/want anything fancy when I go to the gym so this place is good for me, plus it's a convenient walk. It's smaller but I've never had an issue waiting for machines or anything. The staff is super friendly. It was also the best deal in terms of cost of any other place that I called around the area. It closes a bit earlier than I'd like (10 during the week and 7pm on sunday) but otherwise it's great. I've never done any of the classes so I'm not sure how those are. read more
