This is a great place to train! The instructors are friendly, knowledgeable, and tailor instruction to your level. The instructors invest equally in everyone from white belt to black belt, whether those students are competing, learning a new sport, or just trying to get fit. As a new student, I never feel pressured to purchase uniforms or equipment directly from them. From an outside perspective, academies like these can seem intimidating. However, Florian's is the most inclusive environment I have participated in over my 30 years of training in different styles and at other academies. Although I have only been there briefly, I feel part of this group because everyone goes out of their way to be welcoming. It is an excellent place for women to train together as well. read more

Very disappointing. This place is all about making money. They will try very hard to sell you membership, uniform and get your monthly payments. They absolutely don't care if a child is learning anything. My son was way too young and Florian Martial Arts Center stuff should have used their better judgment. After few months of absolutely no benefit to my child I tried to cancel the membership and encountered extreme resistance and rudeness. This could be a good martial arts center for adults, but I would not recommend it for kids. read more

I have been a member of the school since this past July. The instructors, training and atmosphere have been excellent. I have been studying various styles of self-defense for over 25 years, and find the instruction given at Florian to be spot-on if your goals are to learn self-defense skills in a friendly, supportive environment! I've observed over 5 classes here while my friend was enrolled. I was choosing between two schools and spent over a month really trying to assess which school would meet my needs for BJJ. I cannot attest to the Muay Thai, as I never observed those classes. Let me start by saying that I'm an intense person who expects to work hard when I do something. I'm not there to make friends. I found that there was a significant amount of chit chat going on. During drills, instructors would engage in conversations that were not relevant to technique and be somewhat distracted from the observation part. Thus, technique corrections/feedback were not happening as much as I would like. It really is all about personal preference. I think if you're interested in the art but aren't crazy serious or are a beginner who wants to ease in, this is a great place. This place lacks the rigidity that someone like me prefers. The instructors and students are friendly. The facility is clean and has up-to-date equipment. What ultimately turned me off to this place was that there was still 10 minutes of class time left, but class was ended early. "We're ending early so that we can clean the place." Excuse me, but cleaning the facility should not cut into instruction IMO. No one enrolled seemed to have an issue with that (and if they did, no one spoke up). I would most definitely have an issue with that. I think for a majority of people, FLOMAC will give you the tools you're looking for. It just isn't my cup of tea. read more

For all (yea this means the two or three of you) that may read this review, it will only cover the Brazilian jiu-jitsu program. So I've trained bjj for quite a long time, but given the fact that I'm in the field of medicine with a crappy schedule, I had a difficult time sticking with it. As a result I got a decent amount of exposure to various academies and types of instruction. I have to say without a doubt that Florian Martial Arts Academy brings something new and exciting to the table. First are the basic classes. These classes focus on basic movements, conditioning and the bread and butter techniques of bjj. These classes are for white belts and above, but even higher belts can benefit from these classes by helping to instruct beginners as well as reviewing the basic principles. The advanced classes teach move(s) that are drilled (some with a real life focus, some with a competition focus) for about half an hour followed by 30 minutes of sparring/rolling. You get to learn the little nuances of moves down to details like where to place your hips and how to angle your arm for optimized leverage. Rolling allows for the application of what you've learned. Most everyone here is not out there to kill you and really are there to help you train and get better. Afternoon classes, although difficult to make for many folks, offer a smaller group for instruction and plenty of individual attention. All the instructors are very involved in helping you improve your techniques and are always down to roll with you if there's an odd man out. It's a privilege to be able to roll with black belts of such a high caliber and have them critique your technique, helping you become a better bjj practitioner. It's a great bunch of folks that will make you feel immediately welcomed into the community and the best part? You'll learn a ton of jiu jitsu and have a great time while doing it. read more

The same as most students here, I have been a fan of MMA for years and finally decided to pull the trigger on joining a gym. I have visited a few gyms and found the Florian gym to be the right match. With the few places I visited, I found there to be a not particularly beginner friendly atmosphere, but that is not the case at the Florian gym. Once you walk in, pride and judgement are checked at the door, and everyone helps each other. If you do striking, as I do, your first few classes you will get one on one attention to get the basics of striking down so you don't feel ridiculous and just thrown into the mix. You will very quickly become acclimated to the basics of striking and feel at home. Great place, great location, great people - both instructors and students. read more

I was a fan of Kenny Florians from his fights in the UFC and had known about Florian Martial Arts for awhile but never pulled the trigger even though i really wanted to take some classes, one day he tweeted about a one month of unlimited classes at FloMac for 50 dollars so i just had to try it out. After a week of classes i knew i would love it here. I started with no prior experience, i didnt even know how to correctly stand, punch, or move around when striking but students with more experience are really helpful here, taking time helping you out and making sure you're learning the basics correctly. Striking Class consist of warming up, line drills, then drilling the technique thats being taught that day, followed by using what you learned that day on the bags or sparring for people who have a little more experience. BJJ consists of the same procedure with the warming up and drills then most of the time practicing the technique you learned with your partner in a live roll. Same as striking i was always a fan of BJJ and would always mess around with friends trying to submit each other but never really knew real technique and thats what your going to learn at FloMac, Professor Keith and the coaches Felix, Mark, Nate, and Grant do a great job teaching technique and giving tips and one on one help when needed. They also offer other classes like Wrestling, BJJ for blue belts and above, and MMA after you get your blue belt. They also have a range of prices depending on what classes you decide to take. Gloves and Shin guards are available for beginners to borrow for class too. Ive been here for just a couple months and I feel so much more confident in my striking and BJJ then when i started thanks to Keith, the coaches, and all the students with experience who are very willing to help you out with anything. If your thinking about taking classes somewhere and are looking for a friendly environment where you can have fun while learning at your own pace this is the place to go. This place is truly top notch. As a beginner I was apprehensive about taking my first steps into a martial arts gym. After reading about a few places online I settled on Florian's and was also lucky enough to come across a groupon. Everyone is welcoming and friendly, whether a black belt or white belt. The fundamental jiu jitsu classes are a great workout and very informative, yet at no point have I felt in any danger of injury. They have other classes catering to those more experienced in various disciplines, so it's not just a beginner's place. I'm no expert, but I do feel that this gym has much to offer no matter what your current skill level. I've been signed up at Florians for a while now. I will at least say this.... Yes, the gym is a little small but you will never find better Jiu Jitsu instruction anywhere. Keith, Felix, and Mark, are the easiest people in the world to talk to. They are very passionate about what they do and really do care about your progress.I have never left the door without all of my questions answered. The comradery is the best and that also is important. The gym is as clean as it gets, the people are awesome, and they are very flexible(At least in my experience). I kind of refuse to settle for anything less than what these guys can offer. Thats why I refuse to go anywhere else. read more

Kenny's gym should really focus on what they are good at: BJJ... NOT Muay Thai. The people are nice as hell, don't get me wrong, but they just don't cut it when it comes to the basic principle of Muay Thai: CONTACT. When I walked into the gym, it was behind a building in its own cozy corner. The gym was a lot smaller than I expected via the pictures on the website which was disappointing, but they had all the equipment necessary to be a impressive gym. Too bad they never use any of the equipment. After training in Krav Maga for a while back at home (I'm a college student now) I was excited to try a Muay Thai because it's suppose to have just as much contact as Krav Maga. Apparently this is not the case at the Florian Martial Arts Center. I didn't make contact THE ENTIRE CLASS. The fitness consisted of just running around in a circle and then jump roping for 9 minutes, which i can do myself for free. All we did was throw air punches in a line while the trainer was off in the corner completely ignoring us and socializing. Now I'm all for socializing, but if people are going to shell out 160 bucks for a class, a little attention would be nice. I'm sure their BJJ classes are awesome, but they shouldn't be advertised as a Muay Thai gym when there's zero contact on any of the equipment or on the other class mates. It's suppose to be martial arts for the streets, but with that kind of training, I'd be dead in seconds. read more

Was not happy with my experience here. Definitely not the place for someone with experience in Muay Thai and interested in training mma. But I will say they have a solid Jitsu program. But you better be prepared to over pay 200 plus dollars for a watered down program read more

What makes Florian's a great place to train is the instructors and the people. Keith Florian (Black Belt) and Alex Lewis (Brown Belt) are great teachers, they have a knack for breaking down the techniques into basic components and going through all the fine details that makes the difference between something that works in theory and something that works in practice. They have a passion for Jiu Jitsu and it shows. There are a wide variety of people at Florian's everyone from college students, to doctors and lawyers. There is a family feel at FloMAC people go out of their way to make new members feel welcome and take an interest in helping each other achieve their goals. I give up on this place!!! I signed my kids up for lessons last spring. It was pretty pricey but conveniently located so I gave it a go. They made it real easy to pay them and sign up taking all my credit card information for the steep monthly payment and registration fee over the phone . I canceled their account at the end of June as they went into camp for the summer but Florian kept charging me in July. I tried calling several times to reverse the $250 monthly charge and the person I spoke with kept telling me they had to talk with their manager but after 4-5 messages their manager never called me back. I even went in there in person and again the person there told me he couldn't credit me and the manager was not there. So net net they are pricey, not worth it and completely unresponsive read more

I started training here with no prior experience in martial arts and never thought it would develop into such a huge part of my life. People, staff especially, are nice and know your name from day one. It's not at all a "meathead" gym, and at times it seems like the majority of the students there are doctors, lawyers, police officers, and other professional types. Lots of college kids from NE, BC, BU, and others. The great thing is FLOMAC can be as much or as little as one wants. Some guys there come in once a week and do some jujitsu, some guys have aspirations to fight professionally. And if you do want to compete, Keith will prepare you the right way. Our jujitsu competitors over the past few years have gone from participating in local matches like NAGA and Boston Open to competing on a national and even international stage. The grappling is top notch and the striking is constantly improving and some students are competing in that arena as well. But most importantly, I didn't realize how much fun I would have at Florian. I am there just about every night of the week, and never thought it would turn into what it is in my life. I am a former military veteran with lots of deployments and was looking for some way to stay active and physical and be a part of a team as a civilian. FLOMAC is it for me and I highly recommend checking it out. I literally cannot say enough good things about Florian Martial Arts Center. While the quality of instruction is superb, and the availability of martial arts styles and partners of all ages (yes, its a great place for kids to thrive and have fun), genders, and skill levels to practice with is plentiful, its the atmosphere that FloMAC actively perpetuates that is most impressive. From the moment you walk in the door you're greeted as a friend, your classmates proactively help you learn and feel comfortable, and the professors don't just teach martial arts - they instill positive thinking, goal setting, nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and the school creed which is humility, perseverance, respect, courage, and self-control. These are qualities that help you succeed in every aspect of life, no matter what your arena of choice is. And yes, I said "professors" - instructors at FloMAC are referred to as professors, which nicely examples the overall professional, respectful environment you find there. I can personally attest that FloMAC has done tremendous things for me, and it has literally transformed a few of my friends to the point that I just shake my head and smile in astonishment when I see them now. What a difference. I read one review on here that wasn't thrilled with the price - I've been to 2 other academies in the Boston area, and I don't believe FloMAC is any more expensive than they were, its average. But ultimately, this is a question you'll have to ask yourself - how much is going through life feeling good inside and out worth to you? read more
