I have never gone online to give a review, but am just so frustrated that I had to! First I'll start off by saying I've been to bean bar many times and have enjoyed it. I got the bean bar salad which is delicious. That was the only good part of the evening. It is ridiculously cold in there when its cold out! Wear layers! My friend ordered humus which was super salty! The waitress said its supposed to taste like that from the garlic.. Last time I checked, garlic did not taste like salt! She ate maybe 10% of the meal and they still wanted to charge the full price even after she complained. Then I ordered coffee which was cold! The chai latter was wayyyy too sweet and also cold! I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there! Awful awful experience! I will not be going back.. But I will again say the salad was good. (Minus the dry bricks of feta cheese) read more

I had this really amazing peanut butter cookie cake and it is absolutely the best cake I have ever had. I also had a taste of my friend's truffle fries and was super impressed, they're amazing! The server was super nice and helpful. The downside is the price - so expensive!!! read more

The food here is really good and the staff is always very friendly. For most students (the restaurant being by the university), the prices here are way too high and you can get a lot of the similar foods for cheaper at other places around. However, if you're looking for a nicer place to eat around Westdale/McMaster, then this is your best bet for sure! read more

The Bean Bar started off with a decent offering of interesting food, semi-quality food, but that's all gone by the wayside. Their food is overpriced and of poor quality. Their chicken breasts are 'pressed' meat, not real chicken breasts. Their menu is stagnant and the tastes are old already. This is not a place to frequent if you are looking for homemade food, prepared with quality ingredients. The service is great though, but after sending our meals back the last two times we went, we decided not to return. The decor is also dated and in need of an update. read more

I can't comment on much of Bean Bar's menu because once I discovered their nachos, I have ordered it every time. They are huge and they provide a generous amount of salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. If you want the hot peppers remind your server as the cooks have a tendency to forget these. If you want to try these make sure you are not seated at a 2 seater high-top, you will need the extra room. My girlfriend and I used to like coming here when we used to go to school at McMaster. It was a bit pricy, but it was a cool place to hang out after a week of studying (we usually went on the weekend). I always remember the food was good and they had a wide selection of cakes. Sometimes we had to wait for a table, but it was never too long even though people do like to hang out here. This place really reminded me of Pickle Barrel when I first came here due to it's large menu with no real specialty. read more

Horrible service, I could not believe how rude the host treated my sister and I. There were multiple tables available, and we were not allowed to sit in a booth, because multiple groups of 4 could potentially walk in "after us". We said we wouldn't eat there if not in a booth and he said ok and let us walk away. We will never eat here again. (Not to mention the second last time we ate here, we were served undercooked veal, which left us and my mother with awful food poisoning. I've been here twice. Once with a friend and once with my daughters to celebrate a birthday. Both times the food and service were excellent. They have a great selection of meals and apps on their menu. The highlight of the meal is the "cake tour" whereby your server brings you over to the cake and dessert display and gives you a tour of each cake. Its so hard to decide which one to choose. Overpriced for average food. The price of the menu would suggest you are getting huge portions or something extravagant, but nope. They have sandwiches and burgers and pasta, the normal family comfort food. They have a huge selection of drinks some might be interested in. A lot of people told me about their dessert, so I got a pecan pie because it looked quite good. However the portion was so small, it was jellied filling which was very unappetizing, and overall just didn't taste quite good. And to boot it was $9! The entire pie could have easily made 12 pieces or more, so for a $100+ pie, no thank you. The size and taste were worth about $3. Also all the cakes are the same price for the slice, and they're clearly not all the same size, so the bang for your buck is a big issue. I don't see myself coming here again, when I could just as easily go to a chain restaurant like Boston Pizza and get the same food with a better bang for my buck. read more

We ordered a salad first followed by moules frites as a second course. Our second course arrived two bites into the salad. (We were told no matter what, the next course comes 7mins after the first course is prepared.) The waitress rolled her eyes when we said we were not ready for it, as they would get cold while we ate the salad. Half way through the salad they tried to bring the fries back again. We said we were still not ready as we wanted them with the mussels. When the salad was finished, our moules frites arrived dry and tepid at best with cold bread and soggy fries. We had to call the waitress over to tell her the food was cold and not up to par. She responded as if it was OUR fault for wanting two courses. We were made to feel like an inconvenience when we asked for it to be remade. When it finally arrived the waitress dropped the plates and ignored us. No quality check or anything else afterwards. The rest of our conversation over lunch was about how crappy the service was. (but thank you to the Chef for redoing the food!) Our glasses went empty and she did not revisit the table except to clear. I made eye contact with her twice and nothing! She sat at the bar and ate her lunch. I ask for a business card and was given a generic number for the restaurant. I told her I was looking for a manager or owner's contact information, but she couldn't give me anything specific. Apparently the assistant GM was there, as she mentioned this to us... but hopefully she was unaware of what was happening, as no one checked in to make sure everything was ok. I've never felt like such a nuisance and I've never ever been made to feel like becoming an advocate against dining at a certain establishment! I would highly recommend NOT dining here! You can order whole cakes from Bean Bar's incredible display! I worked with Debbie to order cakes for a cake buffet at my wedding. I can't stress enough how much I loved working with her...she was responsive, informative, sweet and super helpful. By far my favourite vendor I worked with! Always a great time here. Love the atmosphere and food. Service is always pleasant and quick. My only complaint is the food can be very pricey, you could order a 10-15 dollar burger and still have to pay approx. 5$ more to add fries. Bean Bar is one of those restaurants we had tucked away in our minds, as a place we wanted to try some day. Always looking for something a little different, this place did not disappoint. The decor is dated, I'm assuming intentionally, because it works. The staff and service is over the top, from the moment you walk through the front door. We had the good fortune of enjoying the company of Shanna, for the evening. She is pleasant, and engaging, and injected fun into the entire experience. She was most attentive, and helpful, without being the least bit intrusive. Very important to us is the fact that we did not feel rushed; we were given all of the time we needed and wanted. It is notable that all of the servers appeared to provide excellent service to their guests; there is obviously a culture of providing good service employed here. On to the food. We had the Dips, Chips & Toasts as a appetizer. This was not your typical pita chips with Asiago dip option that many restaurants offer. There was an excellent variety of all three items; and everything tasted fresh. Mains were the Sweet Potato Quesadilla, and the Beef Gorgonzola Gnocchi; again the flavours worked with each other, and there was a wonderful freshness to the food. The menu sort of goes against our preference of offering a few choices, and doing it really well, but this place may be the exception. Based on our first experience, I look forward to strolling through the menu. Finally, dessert. I rarely eat it, but the cake bar was just too enticing. It was somewhat telling that that when I showed Shanna which one I wanted, she didn't look at me and tell me how wonderful it was, she looked at the cake and told it how wonderful it was. I knew at that moment, that I had made the right choice. I'm not sure what it was called, but it was something along the lines of Chocolate, Caramel, Praline Cheesecake. The cheese filling was whipped and light; it was heaven on earth. Finally, value. We never choose a restaurant based on what it is going to cost; we look for different, fresh, and good service. Bean Bar is a winner on all three fronts. We were surprised at the amount on the bill when we received it, but in a good way. We have paid three times the amount that was on that bill, and not enjoyed the experience nearly as much. Bean Bar will be one of our regular options, and we look very forward to our next visit. read more
