We went in on Eclipse Monday for lunch. It was busy and the staff were really friendly and down to earth. But the Buffalo chicken sandwich was quite the let down. He stole food and left while they yelled at him. With customers in the shop just let it happen, or don't let him come in and use the facilities in the first place. Pretty good soups - a little on the pricy side given the portion size. We had the lamb stew which was delicious, it had an amazing texture and depth of flavour. Note: Service is a 5/5! Guy who took my order was very helpful and friendly and I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately the food fell short. I think the good ol' burgers 'n fries here are the absolutely WRONG MENU ITEMS to order. Most of the patrons I saw were eating soups and sandwiches, so maybe they have more insight as to what's good here! Yes, burgers are "cheap" at $6, but it was slightly larger than a slider. Patty was most likely frozen, overcooked, and not seasoned whatsoever. It was bland. Waste of a cheat meal! Fries were meh. Guy who was helping us was did try to push the optional "saus" +$1 and only after I tried the initial fry, did I realise why...fries were bland and overdone. We left the bottom remnants 'cause they were a bit too burnt. I've had Belgian-style fries before and couldn't stop eating them. Here however, I was just eating them 'cause I was hungry. For a restaurant that specialises in soup, could there be a more perfect name? I mean, you don't even need to know who they are or what they sell when you hear the name, the burnt tongue just screams an over-zealous soup eating experience. This should not be confused with the far less sexy "Burnt Roof of Mouth" which is caused by hot pizza.... hmmmm perhaps there is something here... .... anyway I digress... The real kicker here is TBT might be known for their crazy flavoured/tasty soups in the 'hammer' but what you wouldn't know about these guys is they also grill a mean burger! I know right?! I had found this out through locals in town and decided if I could have an awesome soup and an awesome burger that, that would pretty much be as healthy as a salad (I mean I didn't get fries after all). For my meal, I went with the Deluxe burger and added cheese, bacon and fried onions to make that sucker really sing. For my side of soup, I was told that a perfect pairing (yes soup pairings) for my burger would be a cup of Vietnamese veg curry soup (sort of like a bowl of Phõ and a bowl of curry (sans meat) had a cilantro and basil flavoured baby. The flavour of both the burger and the soup were on a whole 'nutha level. Definitely 5stars all around. My one gripe (because I was HUNGRY) was that the burger was super small - about the circumference of a McDonald's kids meal burger but higher and taller because of all the stuff. I will say, I'm in no way comparing them TO McD's, these guys are WAYYYY better, just using the size comparison. Heard a lot of hype for this place but I didn't find the food to be anything spectacular. Probably a decent place for lunch but not ideal for dinner. The service was lovely; the waiters were extremely polite and friendly. There was also a nice vibe to the restaurant. The Food: Maybe I just haven't had my luck with the soups but I haven't had anything I'd go back for again. Got the sausage lentil with asiago soup today, and it was just average and too watered down. The sandwiches / grilled cheese were amazing though. Price for a filling dinner came to ~$17 (for a medium soup and sandwich) which doesn't make this the cheapest place for a bisto-esque diner. Overall, I loved the atmosphere but food was mediocre. Mmmmm soup. Surprised how tasty their soup is! And filling! I can't recall the exact name but our soup had pork and a large size grain in it. Delicious. The menu is a little confusing to look at, but I think if you come I regularly you quickly get used to is and the coding. Service very friendly. I work right down the street from the Burnt Tongue on Cannon and I get my lunch here at least once a week. Usually I would order a medium soup with bun. Lately I have been finding that their portions and prices seem higher than the quality of food I have been getting. I have been adding in a half grilled cheese in order to feel full. For example, today's pancetta and onion soup was a medium for $9, but when I opened up the soup it was only 2/3 full. The soup itself is fresh, delicious and made from scratch. But the 'side' veggies was watery and consisted of just 6 pieces of celery and carrots. The grilled cheese half sandwich was delicious too. I checked out The Burnt Tongue with my husband and father, and let me start by saying that my dad is the Soup King. He loves soup, like, LOVES soup. My brother calls him Soup Man. As soon as I told him about this place he insisted we go. We ended up there around 6:30 on Nov. 28th. The restaurant is cute, kind of rustic Canadiana meets old-school diner. It's a bit dark, so those of us who like to instagram everything we eat may be out of luck. Plus, and this is a biggie, they have their own free parking! In downtown HamOnt! Nice. No website yet, but they are on FB, Twitter, Instagram (@theburntongue), where they post the daily soups. Anyway, Dad and husband had a split-pea soup that was stupid. It was so good; the stock used in that soup was so meaty-tasting and hearty, it was awesome. I don't even like peas, and I'd eat that every day. I had a potato-rosemary soup that was thick without being grainy, and it had a great rosemary flavour, like the potatoes had been boiled or poached in rosemary, subtle and really fresh. Again, so good. We all got them with buns, which were a standard soup bun (crunchy outside to stand up to the soup, chewy inside for mopping up the bowl), but we could have gone healthy and had the veggies or an apple. All-in-all, the soups we had were delicious, I mean really satisfying. The Soup Man heartily approved, and said that is where we are going for dinner whenever he visits. We also tried the burger with cheese, and an order of the Belgium fries. The burger was an average burger, and sometimes that is exactly what you need. It wasn't fancy or weird, it wasn't trying to be anything other than a decent burger, which made it satisfying. The fries were on another level. Served with a mayo they get imported from Holland, they were so good. They were salty, savoury, a bit of crunch. And a medium order was more than enough to share between the three of us. To round it out, we each had one of their glass-bottled sodas. Dad and husband went basic with Coke, but I tried the Chummy Rummy grapefruit something-or-other. Can't remember what it was called but effing YUM. The only complaint, and this is being picky, is that they sell out really quickly. They were down two soups by the time we got there, but it's not like there was no soup at all. They still had four on the menu, so come on. Total bill for three medium soups, two burgers with cheese, one medium fries and three soft drinks was $45, which I would happily pay again. Plus the owner was soup-er nice (get it!?! SOUPER?!? Oh puns). Anyway, if you're in Hamilton, eat at The Burnt Tongue. Go there. Order all of the soup. Eat it. You will thank me. But more importantly, you'll be full of soup. read more

I don't know why this place is so highly rated. It's okay, but not somewhere I'd constantly return to. The atmosphere was nice, but a draft of cold air would enter any time someone opened the single door. It's half-serve style, so you go up to order and you pay first. So, how much tip is that?! We haven't even tasted the food or experienced the service, yet! The one guy was really polite and friendly, but another guy was just doing his job. The menu was on the wall; not a very appetizing menu. They asked us if it was our first time there, but didn't bother to explain that their main focus was soup. Maybe we should've known based on the name and the selection of soup, but it didn't seem like other customers knew, either (based on how many people actually did not order soup). Don't bother ordering their $4 hamburger anyway... very few toppings available and it's slightly bigger than a slider! I suppose it's supposed to go with the soup. The fries were delicious. The soup we ordered got to us in a really wide bowl (plate?) and so even though it arrived hot, it soon became lukewarm. The soup wasn't even that good. Not better than anything outside of a Campbell's soup can. Highly forgettable. And what were the sides for the soup? Apple slices or baby carrots/celery or bread? Now this is the second "Burnt Tongue" location in Hamilton, and I must say that I do enjoy both. I have been to this location more often lately since it is closer to where I live. I have had nothing but great service here! I really enjoy this restaurant. Service is always friendly, informative and so fast. They like to give me suggestions when I am indecisive about what to try. I like to try a different soup each time I visit. I usually (almost always) order take out because it's usually on my lunch I pop in and grab some food. I've tried a bunch of soups and never had a bad flavour- most have been vegan and dairy free and all delicious. I like how they have many options and sizes to choose from at different price points. I also really love the Kale salad - the dried berries, nuts and the cheese on it are to die for - and it is actually more filling than it looks! The tuna melt is delicious as well, the bread is toasted and buttery - just yum! I've had the grilled cheese before as well which is equally yummy. I like how they give you a choice for your side (apple, veggie sticks...and a few other options but those are usually the ones I choose, haha!) I will say that I have never eaten inside this location, but it is really quite warm inside. The kitchen is basically open and the place itself is very small so this could all add up to a hot restaurant. No big deal to me though since I do take out :) Overall, I really love Burnt Tongue and I will be back to try new soups very often! read more

I was here for lunch last week and had the mushroom barley soup. It was fine. The vegetables and barley were cooked well but it was a little bland for me. I would have preferred the stock to be much more concentrated and/or seasoned. The soup ate more like a side dish than the main event. Hard to screw up a restaurant like this, and it's solidly adequate though not supremely exceptional. Senegalese yam peanut soup had a nice flavor and consistency, and the roll was as fresh as they described.
