Bean Bar is the perfect date night spot in Westdale village. I have been to the restaurant on multiple occasions. Whether it is just to grab a casual bite or go on your first date, do not forget to try a slice of any of the imported cheesecakes. They literally melt in your mouth! Any of the pasta dishes on the menu are excellent and full of flavour. The ingredients used in the pasta dishes compliment each other and are of high quality. My personal favourite appetizer is the Calamari. Although Calamari is my personal go to favourite appy, the way they make it here is simply scrumptious! My pasta go-to is the Tortellini Alfredo. The rich and creamy sauce is superb compared to most restaurants. I constantly find myself dipping the garlic bread into the sauce, cleaning off the rest of the plate! Been here a few times with friends, its a cozy place. Food: The first time I came I had the steak & fries. The steak was nothing special, neither were the fries. It was a good tasting meal but nothing exceptional. The second time I dined in, I had a bowl of the braised beef quinoa soup (I'm not a health junkie, but quinoas not that bad). It was also good, but nothing super special about it. I didn't enjoy the cornbread that comes with the soup, the tastes didn't go together as the cornbread was waaaay too sweet. I had some chocolate cake which was delicious, but I love chocolate anything so it might not be for you. Service: I find that service is hit or miss with this place. The first time I came, service was SO slow... I mean it was ridiculously slow. We waited for our food for almost 45 minutes slow. The second time around it was perfectly acceptable. The waitresses came around a good amount and checked up on us a fair bit. Environment: Its in Westdale so its obviously full of Mac students who range from being loud and rowdy to perfectly normal. Came here for dinner with my friend on a Saturday evening. We LOVED the food and our server was excellent - he was very personable, efficient and had close attention to detail. First of all, a pint of delicious Amsterdam was only $5.50 which is a great price. We ordered the calamari appetizer and wow, highly recommend! It was served with a delicious chipotle mayo and hot sauce. Would definitely get it again. We both ordered the bacon themed gourmet burgers (topped with bacon, bacon jam and Brie cheese) atop a turkey burger. These did not disappoint. I had sweet potato fries on the side which were cooked and seasoned very well (the touch of rosemary was nice). I think what made our meal was our friendly and helpful server. He was very efficient and gave us good advice about what to order. We really appreciated that he went the extra mile. I will be back for sure! I love the food here! Although it is quite pricey, everything was amazingly delicious. They have a pretty decent sized menu and many of their selections were very creative and fun, such as their Mango Chutney on naan bread with melted brie cheese. Another one of their amazing dish was the veal, they definitely have the best veal I've ever tasted, it was cooked to perfection and it was very savory. Their food had many exciting flavors that worked really well together, and it is definitely worth a try if you want to treat your taste buds to some delicious fun! They also have a great selection of desserts which are displayed behind a showcase, and they also carry a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. However their awesomeness doesn't just stop there, the atmosphere of the restaurant was also very amazing! I went at night so the restaurant looked very beautiful with the dim lighting perfectly complimenting the decorations of the restaurant. The washroom was also very clean and well decorated to fit in with the atmosphere of the restaurant. Been here several times, and the food's been okay to pretty good. The items I can clearly remember having tried are: truffle fries, sweet potato fries, to die for hot sandwich, and their pulled pork quesadilla. Truffle fries: great, I can taste the truffle! Not too salty either. Sweet potato fries: great To die for sandwich: definitely NOT to die for, it wasn't bad but it was just so-so. The meat was really stringy, and kind of dry. Pulled pork quesadilla: tasted great, good dish for sharing. Deserts: the cakes are pretty good, but make sure you have someone with a sweet tooth to share them with. Fairly overpriced for what you're getting though. I'd recommend valentino's or weil's bakery for good, fresh, made-in-house deserts at a much more affordable price. The waitress that was there the last time I went was being pretty passive aggressive. I am thankful for the service you provided, which was reflected in the tip I gave, but passive aggressively saying "you're welcome" as you walk away from the table reflects poorly on the restaurant, and on you. The woman at the counter had a serious case of resting bitch face when taking my desert order. Can't imagine business to be booming when you look at all customers like that, so I'm going to guess it was just me. For the price that this restaurant charges, I would rather go somewhere that is cheaper and has friendly customer service, such as pho dau bo, hmbrgr, (forget the name) fsh and chips, etc. You don't lose anything by being polite, folks. I'm from south of Hamilton, but my girlfriend lives in Hamilton and we frequent the Bean Bar quite often. We both absolutely LOVE their food. Now, we haven't tried every item on the menu or anything, but anything I've ever had there is spectacular. They have an extensive list of drinks and cocktails to choose from. They have regular menu items as well as specialty items, like fish of the day. I was able to try kona kampachi there for the first time and found it flavourful but not overpowering. They also have a veal dish called the Provimi Veal Cutlet that is absolutely to die for and by far one of my favorite dishes in all of Hamilton. Also has a great atmosphere; chic yet relaxed. We've also never had a bad server there and have been served by several different people. Definitely one of my favorite Hamilton restaurants. read more

Bean Bar is located in Westdale; convenient for students at McMaster. For lunch, I had the Smoked Tuna Wrap. Our server was fantastic and checked on our table frequently. The environment is cozy and pleasant. The wrap was okay, nothing special; it was more expensive that I appreciated. Other dishes such as the sweet potato quesadilla and the pulled pork burger were well received. The highlight of the bean bar is the wide variety of cakes and excellent customer service. The Bean Bar is well a Bar trying to be a Restaurant. The service I found to be exceptionally great with just the Waitresses. The Waitress' are very polite and really quick however.. It's difficult to tell who the staff and the patrons are when nobody wears uniforms and the casual clothing blends in too much with the patrons. I saw too many guys behind the bar doing nothing! like the waitress' are busting their butts while they're chatting up their friends or other patrons instead of working. Now getting to the food.. I only tried an appetizer and their soup so I can't say how good the rest of the food is there.. I found too many things on the Menu over priced for a Campus-Restaurant; I call it a campus restaurant because it's just down the Street from the University. When most of your clients are supposed to be students, it's ridiculous having prices that high on your menu. I found even the Appetizer and soup sort of overpriced.. it wasn't even on par with those chain restaurants. Now for some more of the good. The Beanbar is great if you want to skip a Dairy Queen and go there for Dessert. They have a wide selection of lavish Desserts fit for a King. The pricing on their Desserts is decent. The Beanbar shouldn't rely just on Desserts for business.. since there's a lot of option for a Dessert place in this area. I'll go back only if it happens to be for a meeting, but not by choice. read more

If you're looking for awesome sandwiches, look no further! I was really impressed with this restaurant. We came here for a meal on Sunday and couldn't believe how much we liked the bar. Our server, Lauren M was a fantastic with honest answers to our questions about the food (which was very refreshing), great advice about what to get and really friendly, smiley and just overall pleasant. We ordered the To Die For grilled cheese (which was to die for) and the breaded egglplant sandwich which was awesome. It was really hard to choose what to order because everything sounds sooooo good! Check their menu out, you'll see what I mean. The bathrooms were clean, the seating was trendy and comfortable, there were lots of little nooks and they have a cake counter! While doing my undergrad at McMaster a few years ago, the Bean Bar was always a favourite. I was so excited to eat there again and was shocked to notice the food quality and service have deteriorated. The tortellini, which used to be rich with flavour was bland to the point where all 3 orders were left unfinished. The basil pesto penne also lacked any taste of pesto - just tasted like olive oil. The service was extremely slow, especially considering the restaurant was almost empty. We were there 1h 20m before our appetizers came out. Once the dinners finally came, one of the pastas wasn't warm as it must have been sitting while the others were prepared. Very disappointing. read more

I don't go often but when I do I am always pleased. Quite honestly I think that a place like the Bean Bar's popularity starts from the top down. I've just returned from my third trip to Bean Bar and each time I have left completely satisfied. The food is delicious and consistent. The curry chicken and french onion soup are excellent and my boyfriend and I agree that the Canatriciana with gnocchi is one of the best meals we've ever had. The sandwiches are as described - the "To Die For" didn't live up to its name, it was heavy and rather plain - but there were no surprises. The service is good even when it's packed (which it is every night). Call ahead if you're with a group! The decor is attractive and the atmosphere is warm and trendy, but be warned: during dinnertime it is loud since it gets so busy. It is a bit pricey ($20 or so for an entree), but you can count on the quality being top notch. read more

This place is great. It's eclectic, funky, artsy, trendy and holy shit! It actually has good food. Yup, great sandwiches and a great lineup of taps on the bar. Decent service and really comfortable seating. If only they cleaned and dusted the place at least once and awhile!!! No stars for this one, just had lunch here today with three others. I order a portobello mushroom soup with puff pastry lid. The pastry was cooked prefect but not baked on the soup so most likely it is a purchased product and placed on the soup. The soup itself was a was a huge dissapiontment, a chemical base soup stock packed with MSG, it was completely inedible. Another guest had a "special" pear salad that simply wasn't special at all, six thin pear slices on vinegrette soaked lettuce, four pecans, a few red onions no much more. While a thrid guest had a cheese tortellini pasta, again store bought product in a very forgettable sauce. The relaxed staff are too much so, service was very slow, no-one ever checked to see how the food was and finished plates remained on the table until the bill was presented. For the prices charged this restaurant should be far far far better, won't return. read more
