The only downside of this cute coffee shop was that there was only one person working. They do, however, have tons of options, and the barista knew what she was doing. They have their own coffee beans and ground coffee for purchase which we did partake of. It was in a perfect location near Biscuit Head which is where we ate breakfast. I used to buy coffee here all the time and it was always exceptional. The woman who ran the store was pleasant and helpful. She is no longer there and the folks that run it now are not helpful. They seem to be uninformed of the basic principles of making flavored coffee. The first time I got a tasteless bag I thought it might just be a fluke but my second bag was devoid of flavor as well. Needing a quick pick me up after going through the Riverside artist colony and wanting to see West Asheville we found Bean Werks Coffee and Tea. What a treat. I asked for an espresso. It was made to perfection by the barrista; a former competitive barrista. He asked us where we were from and we said Miami. He mentioned a great coffee store: Passion de Cielo; a favorite of ours. It turned out he has been here and was a fan. If you need a quick perk me up in the afternoon; European style, swing by and grab an espresso or other coffee. You won't regret it. read more

Today a guy was the barista (usually a woman when I'm there) and he had his head banging music turned up so loud I couldn't. hear my own on my earphones. Ugh. This is one of maybe 3-5 contenders for very best coffee in Asheville. With a few caveats... First off, avoid the f**ing hazelnut flavored coffee (or any other flavored coffee). That's a no brainer. I have no idea why they sell flavored coffee in 2015. I guess because it sells. Probably to the same people who buy storage lots of vintage General Mills International Coffees off of Ebay and still wax rhapsodic about some waiter on the Seine named "Pierre" (oooh, Pierre!!). Ignore that for the moment. We'll get back to it later. Second, it's loud as Thor's hammer and there's seating indoors for exactly 3 people. Third, it's a cash only establishment. So when I insist it's right up there among the best coffee bars in Asheville, surely there must be some quality that redeems them. And there is. This is a shop where people really give a care about coffee. Even by Asheville standards. They roast their own single origin beans, and brew them on the spot. You get the feeling they're making coffee to be neighborly, as a courtesy to people walking by--not because they have to. Their brews pay ample respect to the coffee beans. They're not dilletantes. They know what they're doing. Their Cafe Con Leche, in particular, is worth the trip, the noise, and the inconvenience. While you're there, buy a couple of pounds of fresh roast coffee. It's worth every penny (and there's an ATM just down the road). It would be nice to see these guys join the current millennium, start taking Square payments, and stop making French Vanilla roast. But I respect that they're probably doing this because of margins, and I accept that. read more

I love this place. They just got repainted with the cutest coffee beans on their exterior. Just a couple doors down from West End Bakery who serve their coffee, I stumbled upon this unassuming place. They roast their coffee here and have a great selection of course. They have a much bigger selection of coffees than next door which is nice. Also, nice add-ons for your coffee are available such as raspberry vanilla flavoring. I've only had the coffee, but they also have lattes, espressos, teas, and smoothies. The only downside is that you will get charged $1 for purchases on your card under... I'm not sure how much. I saw two people here wanting the coffee so much that they were counting change. I loved it so much that to get a refill, I went out of my way to come back with change! Wish they had mugs though because I don't mind sitting here and drinking coffee while using wi-fi, but it's a relatively small place with little seating. Most people just get their coffee and go. *They came down a notch. They don't have a bathroom for their customers! That's a big deal because they serve liquids nor were they too nice about it. read more

I should've known by the overwhelming smell of hazlenut that hit me when I walked into the shop. I REALLY should've known when I saw they roasted a coffee called "Snickerdoodle", that these poeple clearly didn't take coffee seriously. Or, they roast coffee for people who don't like coffee by trying to cover it with sweet desert flavors. Regardless, I needed some beans while I was visiting town and I opted for their simple "Columbian". I got home and made a pot in the french press, and had the displeasure of tasting some of the worst coffee I've ever had in my life. Dirty and stale. However, the staff was extremely firendly and welcoming. They seem to be great people, who, unfortunately, don't seem to know anything about real coffee. read more

Bean Werks is a combination cafe and roastery, but it's not really a relaxing place to sit and have coffee -- the roasting side of things can make it rather loud and extremely hot in there. However, their coffee beans are wonderful. When I lived in Asheville I always got my whole beans here (New Orleans French Roast). Took it home, ground it fresh each day, and had superb coffee every morning. It's all about the beans, and Bean Werks roasts the best. The guys who work here are nice too, always offering a smile and a friendly word, especially for the regulars. read more

They won't accept credit or debit cards, so I won't shop here. But I go to West Village Market to buy their coffee, which I enjoy. There are serious problems with this store itself, however. The roaster is right by the front door. And it's been proven that roasting beans emite dangerous chemicals which are not safe for some people. And I agree with one other reviewer about the flavored coffee, but they make it mainly for the Well-Bread bakeries which are frequented by the hoi polloi. I like their unflavored whole bean coffees, but invest in a credit / debit card reader, folks. No one carries cash around anymore! Also, there are some other awesome bean roasters in the area besides these guys. Dynamite, SRO, and PennyCup come to mind. So get with it, BeanWerks!!! read more

Had family visiting in the area over Christmas and asked them to pick some up for us. It's now their favorite coffee too! After eating at Biscuit Head we decided to walk down to the roastery that they buy their coffee from (seems to be a trend here) just a few blocks over. The girl behind the counter could have talked about coffee for days if we had let her, and we learned much more than we had expected! She suggested that we have a Con Leche, and we are happy she did because it was excellent. They use Cuban espresso instead of their regular espresso exclusively for the Cuban drinks, and we thought that was interesting and authentic. The roaster is loud, and they only take cash, but we ended up buying the Biscuit Head coffee (an Ethiopian coffee) and the "golden nuggets" coffee that she had suggested. Both are fantastic and they even offered to grind the beans for us. Despite the close quarters, volume, and payment choices we recommend this place for anyone looking for a quick drink to go and quality coffee beans. read more

I stopped by here the other day. They had 6 different coffees available in their carafes. A great family run place with ample parking. The proprietor was very knowledgeable in describing the roasting process, acidity, and flavor of the many different beans. I highly recommend this place for choosing the right bean/roast for you. Bean Werks roasts beans in an older roaster right alongside their counter, which is stocked with an extensive variety of beans. I buy my whole beans here. I've never had had an actual coffee poured. The staff is very friendly and always make good recommendations. The beans are well-priced. It is clear that the roaster, Eli, takes a real pride in his craft but is never too busy to talk coffee. He is incredibly passionate about what he does and, if you are lucky, he may even send you home with a sample of some new bean he has acquired. read more

My neighborhood bakery. Perhaps because I bake a lot myself and have, along with my extended family, been in food service in one way and another for years, I set the bar a little high for quality of product and service. Unfortunately I didn't get to experience the product, the selection of which was down a bit in the afternoon, because the service was so unacceptable that I left without buying anything. The shop was crowded with folks who had gotten their food/drink and were sitting down to enjoy them, but there was no line at the counter so I looked at the offerings, made my choice and pulled out my cash. The counter man who seemed to be doing something back-and-forth with the coffee, didn't say 'Hi, someone will be right with you', or 'Sorry, give me a second', or even look at me. Two young women standing near the counter did look at me, but looked away and kept talking to each other. I was there for over five minutes without being acknowledged at all. When I finally caught the eye of the counter guy and asked him if I were invisible, he looked embarrassed and said there was no one to help me right then. When I pointed to the two young women he told me they were on a break. I'm sorry, but that is unacceptable. You don't let a customer stand with money in hand, completely unacknowledged, for that long, break or not, no matter how many good reviews you have. It's bad manners, and it's bad business. read more

While the coffee may be fresh, the place is absolutely disgusting. There are flies EVERYWHERE, the roaster never gets cleaned, nor do the bean bins (they are covered in old coffee oils.) The ceiling is falling apart, and the dust remnants are everywhere. This place is a mess. I've seen the owner treat employees with blatant disrespect. I will not be returning. read more
