Easily one of my favorite 3 coffee shops in the entire state of NC. Was headed out to the Blue Ridge Mountains for a hike and found this place. Cant wait to get back again! Such an awesome space, perfect coffee shop vibes, and a super cool staff that loved their jobs. Couldn't be any cooler if they tried. The coffee was amazing and the food was, too! Just wish this was closer to home for me.

They put a candle in the pastry because it was my birthday. Nice touch!

Great boutique, coffee shop in the downtown area of Swannanoa right off of Highway 70. The space is very clean and open. Ample spots for dates and groups to hang out. The coffee is roasted on site and is definitely a higher end brew. The prices are right in line. The staff are so friendly. A great place to hang out and have a great cup of coffee in the Swannanoa area.

We stumbled upon this place returning from black mountain and it was a pleasant surprise. The staff was very helpful in helping us choose a bag of coffee to take home and the Nicaraguan is 100% worth picking up if you wanted to try a bag for home. The drinks were perfect l. Staff incredibly friendly. Great ambiance. Pastries are from recess (one of our other favorites) all around this cafe is an incredible addition for Swannanoa and we love seeing some sense of peace and comfort coming back to the area post-Helene. We will be back soon!

This is an absolutely fantastic coffee shop. We buy our coffee from here because they roast in small batches and it is delicious. Also, their specialty drinks are super yummy. They have all the classics plus some really great homemade syrups. They have fresh pastry delivery from several different local bakeries, including gluten-free options. The decor is beautifully done, and there are so many wonderful places to sit and chat. It is also run by quite possibly the sweetest family you'll ever meet. We are super thankful to have them in Swannanoa!

Short Sleeves is potentially my new favorite coffee shop in the Asheville area. The coffee is really really good (and roasted in-house), the vibe of the shop is the perfect blend of minimalist and cozy, and the owners/staff are all super kind and helpful! I will be back as often as I can justify it.

Ham and cheese croissant with and oat milk dark chocolate mocha. The perfect pre-hike breakfast!

Food and coffee were both delicious. The space was cozy and clean. I hung out reading a book for a while before setting out on a hike. I never felt rushed or in the way. The staff were friendly and helpful. I bought a couple of bags of coffee on the way out. I'll probably be back tomorrow!

We arrived at around 7:15 am and were greeted by two regulars hanging out front with their dogs, which meant that Mrs. K. got her morning dog fix before we even made it inside. That set a great tone for a good day. The welcome inside was warm in the small town way that feels genuine instead of forced, just easy smiles and a quick hello as I ordered. It was rather quiet when we arrived but the folks seemed to start pouring in as we sipped our coffees. My cortado was excellent even if it was in a paper cup. Mrs. K. was happy with her latte which is the proper test. We lingered a bit, enjoying the quiet and watching Black Mountain wake up around us before getting back on the road. A great little stop just off I-40 and a perfect start for the day. Five stars! [Review 540 of 2026 - 4635 in North Carolina - 25722 overall]

Cool, welcoming with a splash of funky. Loved it. Staff. Incredibly friendly and helpful. My wife likes a real matcha green tea latte and what she got was perfect. Made to the sweetness level she likes (not too much) and the barista delivered it while making sure it was to my wife's liking. Very attentive. Coffee. I am a latte guy, no sweetener just good ol fashioned milk. What I got was robust yet incredibly smooth. A great cup of coffee. We did not try their baked goods. That will be next time, because when we find ourselves in the area again, Dripolator will be a must.

I knew I had to stop in for the sourdough and try some more goodies. I got so lucky because there was only one loaf of sourdough left and as I was leaving another couple came in asking if they had any left. I also picked up a couple loaves of ciabatta, olive focaccia , chocolate cherry shortbread , a ginger cookie and a chocolate peanut butter sandwich cookies from the cooler. As a coffee enthusiast, I admit to sometimes being what my wife would call a "coffee snob" from time to time. I'm happy to report that Recess passes every test I have for coffee. The vibe was perfect, with a classic wooden-style to the seating, and even a really great retro/minimalist playground outside for our kids. The Rwandan pour over I had a couple days ago was full-bodied and delicious, with deep red fruit notes. It was made with care using a Kalita wave flat-bottom dripper, and it was clear that the brewer knew what he was doing. It was so good that I picked up a bag of beans they had for sale (from Sweet Bloom roasters), which has been giving me great pour-overs at the house. We also had a butter croissant, which was absolutely delightful. I returned today to try their milk-drink offerings. I had a masala caramel cappuccino to-go, and let me just tell you--these people know what's up. It was a seasonal offering, and it showed a deep understanding of the marriage of sweetness with flavorful coffee offerings. I love it when I stumble up on a truly wonderful shop for coffee enthusiasts, and Recess has my full stamp of approval. I will be back every chance I get.

While some of their pastries look decent, there is something about their Viennoiserie (laminated dough) products that they just seem to not understand. Every one of their croissants I've tried were underproved, which causes an undesirable internal texture that is dense and not open and light like croissants are supposed to be. They are also very "bread like", which shows that they are losing control of the temperature of the dough and butter during the lamination process. This causes the butter to melt into the dough, rather than keeping the intended layers. This is what causes the crumb of the croissant to be more bread like, rather than the light honeycomb structure you find in a well-crafted croissant. Their other products, assorted buns, cinnamon rolls, etc., look decent, but I haven't tried much of those as they aren't really what I enjoy. I hope at some point they can dial in their understanding of the laminated dough process as it would only elevate and improve what they offer. However, they seem to be busy, so they may be fine with delivering a lower quality product in that department. I also understand that my perspective may be different than the average customer as I'm a professional pastry chef and consultant. I'm not sharing this review to be negative, but to give an honest opinion that may spark this establishment to look deeper into their process and find ways to offer even more to their customers.
