The PTs at Beantown Physio know their anatomy. Following a total knee replacement, they brought my range of motion and extension back nearly to normal over a period of 7 months. I have read a criticism of the treatment room. I found it to be a fun place -- really! -- and I know that the therapists are responsive to patients who want the TV switched off or the music changed. They are, to a person, attentive and skilled. I plan to return to Beantown when I replace my other knee. read more

In early March, I limped into a consultation with Paul Ghostlaw at the Brookline location with severe knee pain (which I thought to be runners knee) asking if his team could help get me marathon-ready for the Boston Marathon in late April. It was a tight deadline and a big ask. I told him that I was so discouraged at the thought that it might not be possible to do with the pain I was experiencing. He took his time to evaluate my lower body range of motion, strength, and flexibility and quickly identified an imbalance in my hip strength/mobility. Paul reassured me that -while it would be a lot of time, effort, and dedication- he believed his team could help. I am SO grateful that they did. I spent a lot of early mornings with his tremendous team who slowly helped build my strength and corrected my form. The team at Beantown physio care about each patient individually, and it shows. Becca (PTA) asked for a status update each time I saw her at the clinic- I truly credit her stretching and training tips/ tricks for getting me to the finish line. I wasn't happy that I had therapy in a room with several other clients, but since I had never had PT before, I thought perhaps this was typical. Nor was I happy that when the Olympics were on television, my therapist seemed much more interested in what was going on there than what I needed. Overall, my therapist showed little interest in me. She barked directions at me, told me to do exercises she had not demonstrated, and snickered when I did things incorrectly. I was concerned that she really didn't know what she was doing. The final straw, however, was when the owner and another client made sexist and anti-semitic remarks right next to me. Overall, I think the place is unprofessional and perhaps dangerous. read more

Paul and his team are the best of the best. Paul helped me rehab a traumatic injury that I honestly wasn't sure I would ever recover from, let alone go back to doing all the physical activities I was doing prior to my injury. He started me from the ground up and really worked to help me regain my strength the safe way that benefited me in the long run. I had the best visit with my Physical Therapist, Paul G who gave me great information on my problem and explained to me why the different problems were occurring. Not only did he put a plan of many exercises together he also gave me recommendations for types of sneakers( which I went out the following day and purchased a pair) and I feel so much better already. Paul spent so much time with me explaining things and making sure I understood what he was trying to get across to me. What really amazed me about Paul is that he had so much more information to help me than my own doctor. Paul and his crew turned the pain from my herniated disk from a 9 to a zero. I had been to other physical therapy groups in Boston before going to Beantown, including one stint with one of our most prominent hospitals. Since those days I've been to Beantown for my herniated disk, arthritis and I'm now being treated for a rotator cuff strain. In all cases their work has been stellar. I will trust no one else and have heartily recommended this practice to friends and family. Unusual as it may seem, I look forward to every one of my sessions. The playful banter between Paul, his employees and the other clients is always lively and good natured, a reflection of Paul's personality. Let me add that I am a Progressive, Bernie Sanders supporter and I have never found any of the conversations among his staff or clients to be anything but good natured ribbing that everyone I've been present with understands and returns in kind. Paul leans right, the rest of us (this being Boston) lean left but the banter is always fun and I even sometimes suspect that Paul is a closet liberal. In any case no one who has been there when I've been there has taken any topic that has come up as anything but good, respectful humor. I have gone to a number of physical therapy places in the past and as far as the overall quality of the treatment, they are OK. If solely basing my review on that, they would get 3 stars. Unfortunately scheduling appointments is difficult and they have a $30 nonrefundable fee for a cancelation less then 24 hours in advance. I find that policy ridiculous and other PT places don't have that. They also refused to see me, after about 10 visits. My auto insurance would not promise them to cover a certain amount and they did not believe that I would or could for some reason. They refused to schedule an appointment and I ended up going to a different place as a result. read more

I have received excellent service both in person and through telemedicine. Paul, Bela, and Ana were excellent with the exercises and treatment. Olivia at the front desk is flawless in scheduling appointments and follow-through. I've received therapy to recover mobility after a leg fracture and shoulder injury. I went to Paul for spine rehab, and was rather disappointed. He had come recommended, but I found that the facility was lacking in equipment and the program he had me on was very weak. Also, at each visit all they did was slap a heat pack on me and then have me do the matt/table exercises that they had already given me to do at home. With both TV's on in there, the staff also seemed very distracted. I could not see why I was paying a copay and using a visit just to do what I was doing every morning? I will say thay everyone there is very nice, and I think much of their limitation as a facility is due to lack of space, equipment, and staff read more

For the past two months I have worked with Angela Iozzo for pelvic floor therapy. I highly recommend Angela. Angela is professional, kind, compassionate and truly cares about her patients. oh no, no no. Unprofessional environment and inappropriate remarks. I went here for shoulder rehab. Paul at intake and every other therapist made a big deal of my shoulder pain being strange and mysterious. They began me on a program. Every time I came there, Fox News was blaring on all the televisions (this was right before the election). There are specific signs up telling people *not* to change the channel, that they are "Paul's TV". Paul and the other male therapist would also have loud conversations about how evil Hillary Clinton is. It was impossible to be in the setting and not hear it. I considered it an annoyance but kept going. Progress was slow to nonexistent. Only one time was there something innocuous on (cupcake wars or something), a time when Paul and the other male therapist were not in (but a young woman was). Later, when Paul was back, I mentioned how nice it was having something light on the TVs instead, hoping to encourage him to create a more appropriate therapy environment. the young woman therapist agreed and said how much she hated having Fox news blaring all the time. Paul got irritated with her for saying that. I felt sorry for the younger therapist. The last straw for me was after the news broke of a candidate admitting to sexual assault on tape. Paul very loudly to the office declared that "every state defines sexual assault differently" so there is "no way to know what is sexual assault anyway". This was so inappropriate for a professional medical setting, and made me profoundly uncomfortable, especially considering hands-on manipulation is part of physical therapy. After that, I switched to another practice that was not mystified by my shoulder and immediately began making better progress. Happy to say I am back to swimming. read more

I had sciatic pain in my back and ended up in the hospital for 4 days after visiting this office. Couldn't move, couldn't walk, couldn't sit up. I emailed my PT Angela, who was nice in person, and she gave me some advice that didn't help much. But my major issue was that she never followed up once to check if I was okay and I went from walking fine when I came in to hobbling with a walker after an extended hospital stay. When I emailed Paul later about my concerns, I found him extremely dismissive and defensive. I am not trying to prove that this office definitely caused the injuries. I just would have expected some level of compassion and I found very little. Unlike other PT offices, they also bill you for every minute you are working independently doing the exercises. Every minute you are in there, they bill you and I got 4 separate (expensive) bills for one visit. This happened each time I visited. They also do have the TVs on all of the time. Maybe some people might like that - personal preference. Thankfully, my other PT office has been nothing but a wonderful experience since leaving there. read more

I just wanted to pass along a note regarding my experiences at Beantown Physio, I came to about 18-20 sessions over the past 4-5 months, and the experience was nothing but positive. Specifically Catlin and Elizabeth, those two were fantastic, I always enjoyed the almost 1.5 hour sessions, my back got better and better as each session and each week passed. I never felt rushed (obviously by my long sessions ) overall it was a very pleasant experience and I recommend this PT facility. Easy to park, plenty of parking on the street. read more

I am incredibly accident prone -- I've had 5 shoulder surgeries in 3.5 years, so I'm no stranger to physical therapy. And being no stranger to physical therapy, I know good therapy, and I know bad therapy. I had the misfortune of tearing my ATFL in my ankle over the summer in a freak accident of my own stupidity. Beantown being close to where I work, it seemed like the perfect place to go to therapy. My first visit should have been a warning... it was a 15 minute "meeting" (I'm guessing it was supposed to be an eval) with the actual physical therapist. We discussed my injury, and how my treatment would go... but he never put his hands on me, and he did not show me one exercise or do any treatment. Having been to a LOT of physical therapy this wasn't what I was used to. But, he seemed nice, and he seemed to know what he was talking about, so I decided to go back. That was my mistake. I went to this place 10 times to treat my ankle and I think my actual physical therapist (the only liscenced therapist in the place) put his hands on me 3 times. If you like being treated by students who may or may not know what they're doing while the therapist isn't even supervising, then this is the place for you. But if you actually want to get better, or go somewhere where you'll be treated by a real therapist, I suggest you look elsewhere. I just had another shoulder surgery last week, and you can be sure, I will not be returning here to trust my post-op rehab to a student while my therapist reads the newspaper or does treatment notes on patients he hasn't even touched in his office! read more

I went to see Paul after surgery to fix a hip labrum tear last March and after requesting to be seen specifically by him, I saw him for each and every one of my many sessions over the next 9 months (sometimes twice weekly). Paul is knowledgable, encouraging, and a great physical therapist and I owe so much of my recovery to him. With Paul's help I had the confidence to keep working towards my recovery. I have friends who have gone to PT offices where they are over booked and you never see the same therapist twice. That's not the case here - Paul and his staff know your treatment and your progress since they work with you consistently. I truly don't think I could have progressed in the way that I did with my hip if it weren't for Paul - he really knows what he is doing and cares about his patients. And, he has a great office environment. After recovering on the couch for many weeks, I looked forward to my sessions where I could actually see progress with my hip and strength! Paul's assistants are all very nice people, and were great to deal with when I had to make last minute appointment changes, or needed help dealing with insurance. My only qualm is that parking is limited outside the building, which is also a residential building. There was rarely street parking, so I'd park in the lot across the street, which was supposedly limited to people using the park. I never had a problem leaving my car there, though. Paul is by far one of the best health or medical professionals I have ever worked with, and while I hope I never have to do physical therapy again, if I do, it'll be at Beantown Physio. read more

First lets talk about the practice for brookline this is a great location its right at the brookhouse where there is free easy street parking and paid garage parking. If you need physical therapy, Beantown Physio is where you want to go. They have been consistently professional, kind and human at a time when every other contact in our lives is at a distance. They have coronavirus instructions for patients to wash their hands before being treated and before leaving. The staff is fully masked, gloves and hands are washed, every time they walk away to do something else. I am in a lot of pain, from multiple injuries, and they never belittle patients who say they are hurting. Instead they LISTEN, and ENCOURAGE me (and all of their patients). They respect patients, and understand they are taking care of a whole human being, not just an arm or leg. Their appointments are at least a third longer than hospital physical therapy. And if you go to the Brookline office, you can take a walk along the Muddy River afterwards. I highly recommend everyone on their staff! read more

This is long, so SUMMARY: I do NOT recommend PT Karlenis, and trying to work with the office manager to correct this has been impossible. The front desk worker, Frida is nice. I cannot speak about the other PTs, though I have heard good things about Jason in West Rox from fellow athletes. Writing Yelp reviews about poor experiences is typically not my thing, but I think this is important to share. About me: I am an athlete, I was going in for an old shoulder injury that had flared up and wasn't painful at the time but I knew muscles around my injured muscle were overcompensating. My doctor suggested I go to PT and have my shoulder evaluated. First of all, pros: - Front desk person is very nice and helpful - Got me in for an initial appointment quickly; even called back when someone had an opening to get me in at a time that was more convenient to my schedule. Cons of experience with PT Karlenis: I had an initial appointment with Karlenis. The appointment started a full 45 minutes late, which was frustrating but I chalked it up to my late afternoon appointment. I was finally brought into the room, and after the first 5 minutes I thought hard about just walking out, and I wish I had. I always like to give people the benefit of the doubt, so maybe it was an off day or a poor fit, but these are just some of the things that added up to my very poor experience: - PT asked me if I had anything close-fitting under my loose fitting top. I said no, so she said she wouldn't evaluate me today but we'd still move forward (how does that work??) I suggested I didn't mind doing it in my bra if she was comfrotable, at which point she said, "Oh, let me get you a tee shirt" and came back with one specifically for evals. So, if I hadn't spoken up, my $50 copay would have gone toward nothing. - When I described my injury and said I hadn't worked out that day, PT didn't believe me. I went home and looked up my records and in fact hadn't worked out 2wks prior to injury because I was on vacation. - When I mentioned I did crossfit, and that my lifts were feeling off which is why I was there, she asked about how much I was lifting. When I told her my strict press weight she said "that's too much" without evaluating me at all prior. As she was evaluating me she said, "oh, you're strong." No duh. When I asked if she was familiar with crossfit, she said "It's what keeps me in business" with a very judgemental voice. - BIG ISSUE #1: when I told PT my sub scapularis (under shoulder blade) was where I sustained initial injury, she told me my sub scap was the muscle on top of my shoulder (wrong) and that my latissimus dorsi was the muscle under my shoulder blade (very wrong) - When I asked what sort of limitations I should make on my working out (which my doc suggested I do) she just told me to follow my pain. I'd been having NO pain, things just felt wrong, and I wanted to avoid injury. - BIG ISSUE #2: she was unable to demonstrate exercises (aka would demonstrate something totally different from what was on the printout of exercises she gave me.) When I asked for clarification, she said she was sensing an attitude from me. I 100% own that yes, I did have an attitude, because I was getting attitude from the get-go and was shocked and upset by her complete incompetence. - I could go on, but I think that's plenty. My main issue walking out was that I did not have confidence that I was properly evaluated (since she couldn't identify names of muscles and couldn't demo exercises or correctly confirm my understanding) Cons of experience with office: - I spoke with my coach and a couple people I work out with who suggested I call and complain, and see if I could get an eval comped with another therapist who was not incompetent. I'm not super confrontational about these things so I figured I'd see if I got better on my own following the exercises. - NOPE. I injured my latissimus dorsi (the real one, not the one the PT said was my Lat) so I worried my exercises were wrong for me. - I called to share a few of my complaints and ask if it was possible to have an eval with another PT (my friend recommended Jason very highly). The front desk worker said she'd have to talk to her manager, and would have her call me. - I called back a week later as I had not heard from you. The front desk person told me her manage was "drafting a letter" to me. (I have a history of customer service management--how can you write a letter to someone, and what are you writing about, if you have only heard from the PT and not from the patient?) I asked for a call and she said she'd have her call me tomorrow. Meanwhile, I still need a competent PT. - One more week has gone by. I called today and the manager was again not in the office. The front desk person reported she was sending me a letter and then would call me. I can't believe how ridiculous this is. I will update if/when I hear more. read more

I have seen Paul and his staff for about 3 different injuries/problems over about the same number of years - Knee - Back and Shoulder. The people in the office have helped me tremendously through the rehab of each problem. I was able to make immediate appointments which was very helpful, considering the pain I was in for the back spasms and the broken shoulder. I was given an initial evaluation by Paul on each occasions and then an immediate appointment for therapy. The practice is always busy but if you book during the prior week, you are usually able to get an appt for when you need it. And you can always check for last minute cancellations. The front desk staff is very helpful. It is interesting that I have seen the some of the same people each time I have been there. They also have come back for different reasons or medical issues. We all seem to come back because we find the therapy/therapists so helpful and the people so nice (as well tell each other ) yet none of these people have posted Yelp reviews (including myself - I am guilty.) I am sure this site would be filled with great reviews if the clients knew to do this. In any case, the office is clean, the staff is friendly, and the therapy - quality has been excellent. Mostly, I have worked with Paul, but I have had therapy from other therapists that have worked with him. They will listen to your concerns and tailor the program with the input from your physician and your progress. On one occasion, Paul assessed my problem and said it could be taken care of in a very short period of time. Yet on another occasion, we had to work a long time to see progress but progress was made. The staff is very good at documenting your progress so that they can move you along to the next step of rehab as soon as it makes sense. I would recommend this practice. While some Therapists have come and gone for personal reasons over the years, I have observed Paul working with new Therapists (new to his practice.) He seems to spend a great deal of time with them to make sure the quality of their work is without question. They often become favorites of people receiving long term therapy. I highly recommended this practice - the treatment and care is excellent. read more

I tore my ACL a few months ago when I was in Boston for work and needed emergency PT to get me walking again. I was referred to Beantown from a top orthopedic surgeon in the area. Paul Ghostlaw and his team (Ana and Bela) got me back on my feet in 2 sessions after not being able to put any weight on my leg for a week. It was incredible. I continued to rehab with them pre-surgery. Their methods were so successful that when it came time to set my surgery, I actually flew myself back to Boston from out of state just so I could do some post-op PT with them. In just 5 days after surgery, I can't believe how much better I feel. I have never been so happy and thankful for a medical referral like this and I strongly recommend anyone and everyone go to them for rehab. Not only are they great at what they do, they're kind, fun to be around, and downright caring -- especially Beth who handles all the office operations. All around great place. read more
