But a great plumber is only good if you can get a response from them. I've been dealing with him for several years now. Consistently I've had to message repeatedly, call repeatedly. On occasion - as the first time I contacted him probably in 2023 - he answers the phone himself, and provides info on what he thinks the problem is. And he does phenomenal work. After a few years of being a good customer, patient, paying on time, never objecting to pricing, I **STILL** cannot get a response from him. One issue is that he's a one man show. It's him, or no one. His wife is lovely and accompanies him at times. Very knowledgeable herself. About 4 weeks ago I initiated contact and he responded immediately via text. Great, I thought. Then nothing. After a few more messages checking in, he said there was a family medical situation. I gave him space, and here we are two weeks and yet another text message to him later, and nothing. Nada. And still a leaking well tank. C'mon. Do better. We are done, hope you sort yourself out with other customers - I've seen several other people have had the same experience.

Outrageous pricing!…read more If those two words are not enough to begin your search for plumbing services elsewhere, keep reading. I was called by Michael and Sons to see if I wished to schedule a plumbing inspection as part of our maintenance package. I said "no," that I would like to get a quote on installing a tankless hot water heater. The same model they recommended cost half that at a big box store. The gas permit charge is $400 through them. Madison County has a rather opaque system for determine plumbing permit charges which means if I get the permit myself, it will be between $75 and $310. I'm willing to pay a convenience fee to have a project done in one fell swoop and won't comment on this charge. What I will comment on is the price for labor alone -- approximately $4200 with our Gold Discount of $600-$800, meaning that a first time customer would be out approximately $5000 for the labor of one skilled plumber. I was told that M&S need to block out a time frame from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM -- nine hours assuming their man takes an hour for lunch. I told the scheduler that I don't think an admittedly-skilled person is going to take nine hours to install such a device and estimated out loud that that is around $500 per hour. After trying to deflect my assertion, I was somewhat-disingenuously told that there was no per hour rate and that such calculations cannot be made. But after a little back-and-forth, my numbers were generally-confirmed. You are welcome to do the math and try to get your mind around the actual number of man hours involved. A lot of you out there pay for such services after refinancing your houses and don't spend much time thinking about how much such projects cost because you are awash in cash and have projects that have been nagging you for years. Or the plumbing company can give you easy credit. Slow down! And one last point I wish to make is through an experience I had years ago when replacing a gas water heater. Can't remember the company, but I got an outrageous estimate, but from an honest plumber. He told me people in Woodbridge have more money than sense; that the job would take him two hours or so; and that after looking at my workshop, he advised me to do it myself. I did. It took around three hours and his quote was for around $1200.

I explained on the phone there were strange brown circles over the septic tank and CO detector went off in the room nearest the pipe with outflow to the tank. I was told it would be $89 for them to come out. He opened two of the septic pipes. Asked me to flush the toilet furthest from the pipe. He saw the water flowing to the tank. Came in and looked around the inside of the house. Said he believed the CO was coming from the propane fireplace pilot. (It has a CO detector next to it which didn't go off.) A total of probably 15-20 minutes max. That'll be "$245 for the diagnostic". He said it was office policy to charge for the diagnostic. Basically I paid $245 for his opinion and no work. Last year, they did good work with good customer service moving our water filter system from under the house to the laundry room. We had no issue. But this time I feel high jacked!!
