Outrageous pricing! If those two words are not enough to begin your search for plumbing services elsewhere, keep reading. I was called by Michael and Sons to see if I wished to schedule a plumbing inspection as part of our maintenance package. I said "no," that I would like to get a quote on installing a tankless hot water heater. The same model they recommended cost half that at a big box store. The gas permit charge is $400 through them. Madison County has a rather opaque system for determine plumbing permit charges which means if I get the permit myself, it will be between $75 and $310. I'm willing to pay a convenience fee to have a project done in one fell swoop and won't comment on this charge. What I will comment on is the price for labor alone -- approximately $4200 with our Gold Discount of $600-$800, meaning that a first time customer would be out approximately $5000 for the labor of one skilled plumber. I was told that M&S need to block out a time frame from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM -- nine hours assuming their man takes an hour for lunch. I told the scheduler that I don't think an admittedly-skilled person is going to take nine hours to install such a device and estimated out loud that that is around $500 per hour. After trying to deflect my assertion, I was somewhat-disingenuously told that there was no per hour rate and that such calculations cannot be made. But after a little back-and-forth, my numbers were generally-confirmed. You are welcome to do the math and try to get your mind around the actual number of man hours involved. A lot of you out there pay for such services after refinancing your houses and don't spend much time thinking about how much such projects cost because you are awash in cash and have projects that have been nagging you for years. Or the plumbing company can give you easy credit. Slow down! And one last point I wish to make is through an experience I had years ago when replacing a gas water heater. Can't remember the company, but I got an outrageous estimate, but from an honest plumber. He told me people in Woodbridge have more money than sense; that the job would take him two hours or so; and that after looking at my workshop, he advised me to do it myself. I did. It took around three hours and his quote was for around $1200. read more

I called Michael and Sons because a room inside my house had lost electricity and I couldn't find out which breaker it was so they came out I was told on the phone it would be a $69 charge and that could be waived if I decided to get the work fixed so they came out he found that a breaker it was halfway tripped but that when he turned it on the ceiling fan sparked so that's why the breaker went so he told me to buy a new ceiling fan and they would come out and fix it then he gave me a bill for $279 to find out that the ceiling fan needed to be replaced I wanted to know and talk to customer service about what happened to the $69 call they said that was for him to step into the door I was never told there was an additional fee plus now it's $345 to fix the fan so $600 to find out that a breaker had been tripped and replaced the ceiling fan that I had to buy was a little bit much I called and they explained that they were sorry that the phone person that I talk to to make the appointment didn't explain properly and they would consider this teaching experience I told her I didn't want to pay $279 for a teaching experience but they said that's how they did business and she wouldn't waive anything at all just wanted to know if I wanted the fan fixed I told her no I would find a more reliable company read more

Run away. They are incredibly overpriced. I spent a fortune on a water treatment system from them and have been unable to get them to give me any documentation on the system (owner's manual?) for two + years. Turns out I found everything online. The bulb they charged me $275 to replace is available for $25 on Amazon (from the manufacturer, not a cheap copy) and the company has a video online on how to replace it myself. The techs from Michael & Son Service are fine, as is the Gold Service Plan. They are good at scheduling regular checkups to get back into your home to try to sell services. Everything you ask about is $300-400. Everything they suggest is $300-800. I was charged $164 to replace 4 screws on my circuit box. $300 for a TP pipe on my hot water heater and a surge protector. $300 was quoted to clear the sinks in the house of hair, etc., even though they were here doing a plumbing inspection where they ran a bit of water from the bathroom/kitchen faucets, flushed the toilets, and checked the hit water tank. Nothing more... about 15 minutes and out. Not seeing value in this service. The HVAC inspection at least changes the filters for free. I guess it's better to be upcharged by someone you know. read more

I called to have a outdoor faucet replaced. I specifically asked for a ball type faucet because the other kinds keep going bad. So take a look at the picture. That's my brand new faucet. It cost $487.75 for part and labor, including the service call. I asked if a plate could be put on to cover that silicone and to cover the open screw holes left from the prior faucet. I was told that for an additional $150 they could do that. I wish I would've known that before having the work done. 8/7/24- UPDATE: Updated review to 3 stars. Manager came out and recommended that plumber install frost free hose bib to replace the incorrect one that was installed first. They did this at no cost and extended the warranty. I'm very glad they did this. With all of that said, however, still annoyed that the wrong one got installed in the first place. It is written on plumber's original paperwork (that I first saw today) that he told me he was installing a "boiler valve silcoc" that is not normal practice- thinking that's what I asked for, but I was not told that is what it was.
