A historic landmark, this former women's college turned inn is a hidden gem of the bourbon trail. The Dedman family have run it for generations. The antique bedrooms, sloping staircases, and period portraits are like staying in a living museum, with a great place to eat, the Owl Tavern, and a cool craft bar, the Owl's nest. Their breakfast, eggs plus two items, is complimentary and served in the original dining room. The two-year dry cured ham is something wonderful to try. This is also ground zero for Kentucky Owl fans. Dixon Dedman revived his family's pre-Prohibition brand, and it's become one of the best selling craft whiskies in the world! He did it right here in the tasting rooms where you can meet him and talk bourbons and ryes. A great place to stay, especially if you're on the bourbon trail!

Outstanding historical hotel. Extremely well maintained. We stayed in the main house, and the quality of the original construction and the maintenance efforts are obvious and intentional. Our room was extremely comfortable, well appointed and in the style of an upscale, old school plantation house. The downstairs has beautiful sitting rooms, a wide planked and comfortable front porch and beautiful fixtures. The Owl's Nest restaurant on-site had very good food. Staff were extremely friendly, and the grounds are beautiful. I mean gorgeous! The Beaumont Inn is located in the oldest town in Kentucky, Harrodsburg, which is pretty much the awesomest historical down town I've ever seen. Having just come from Franklin, TN, that's a major compliment. The surrounding neighborhood is filled with beautifully maintained historic homes. I loved staying here--I felt like I was in a southern dream. Beaumont Inn gets the highest accolades I can give and ranks among my favorite places stayed to date. if you can, go here. You will absolutely enjoy yourself........

After a day long visit to Shaker Village, a 10 minute drive to the Old Owl Tavern (part of the…read moreBeaumont Inn) was the perfect choice for dinner. As soon as we parked the car we were greeted by a ginormous need of mint...the scent was inticing. The tavern does not take reservations and we arrived at the perfect time, around 5:30. But 6 pm the bar was full and most of the tables were also filled. The tavern had good character, dark, woody...with photos of rick houses on the wall along with paintings of two fierce owls. We were greeted immediately and had the pleasure of being served by the most pleasant and efficient waitress. Enough choices for bourbon, some good drafts, and a deliciously made dry martini (along with a coffee for our tea toatler yesterday) started is off. There was a nice selection of specials for the day...some of which only a true southerner could appreciate (fruit gel topped with mayo, tomato spicy over cottage cheese topped with mayo) and some like cream of broccoli soup and steak boardelaise that even a yank could appreciate. Our table settled on two orders of fried catfish which came with a choice of two sides...baked potato and coleslaw were the choices. One of our diners choose the fried chicken livers that came with cream gravy...she chose the broccoli soup and corn pudding as her sides. Our tea toatler chose the country fried steak. I will term you that everyone cleaned their plates...it was that good. A final round of coffee, the OK from the waitress that we could pick some mint (which was planted in our garden at home) and we were off. Guess who is coming back? Me!!!

Table for three was cleared and handed to us promptly (they don't take reservations)…read more Drinks were great (old fashioned and manhattan). Server was attentive and friendly. House salad was fresh with fantastic blue cheese dressing I assume was house made. Chicken livers were impeccable--crispy outside and tender and delicious inside. Gravy was nice (hint of nutmeg?) mash was acceptable but not outstanding. Chicken my companions had was good. Banana cake was outstanding! Cobbler was undercooked and not tasty (they gladly subbed in an orange/lemon cake which was great) bread pudding and cobbler both looked a little sad next to the cake portions. Perhaps think about human nature when you are pushing out desserts. It is very easy to feel let down when your dessert is tiny and your neighbor's dessert is huge! Just a thought. Recommend highly! Atmosphere, service, food, the whole picture.

We got to stay in the renovated Philemon Waters Cabin of 1815 this time around. Despite the oppressive heat/humidity the modernization's to the cabin, A/C, made the nights comfortable. The common area of the cabin has an activity corner for lack of proper term. My daughter did utilize it during our stay. She survived quite well despite the lack of us allowing her to use any electronic device. We searched for rocks and using the provided paints, she painted them and left them in the common room for others to enjoy. The provided breakfast meal was just as hearty as it was during our first visit. The variety and quantity of food brought to the cabin in the morning was outstanding. It's nice to see more horses on property, It was also a site to see when whole herds (if that is what they are called) of deer come out of the tree line into the fields on the cloudless nights. On multiple nights we had to see them numbered at least in the 35-45 range. The owners have been able to make some improvements to sections of the grave road/drive into the Farm, but one still knows that you will definitely disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of daily life traveling up to the property. The owners are continuing to do a fantastic job! Now I would like to go there during the Spring time now that I have seen the Fall and Summer times on the Farm. Only this time I hope to not wait another 3 years!

But if you…read morewant a weekend away from it all in some of the most beautiful land above the Kentucky River palisades you don't have to wait for them to complete their work. There are currently two places to stay - the Philemon Waters Cabin is a renovated large old log cabin with room for 5-8 depending on whether you are willing to share a double bed. This very old cabin has two bathrooms with all needed conveniences including plush towels and toiletries. There is a massive working fireplace in the cabin and Matt laid the fire for us twice so we could have warmth and a cozy ambience when we wanted to sit by a fire and talk. Another option is the Colonial Cottage newer and with a kitchen/dining, sitting room and upstairs bedroom (queen bed, I believe). There are plans for rooms to be available in the main farm house. Canaan Land Farm is closed during the winter months. The long road down to the farm is fine for a sedan or SUV; a sports car or motorcycle would find it more of a challenge. There are several horses on the property and they share a big field behind the Colonial Cottage. There are mowed paths through fields above the river (you can't make it down to the river, however). The bed I slept in (Colonial Cottage) was comfortable, with good pillows and the towels are plush. The breakfast was generous - eggs, bacon, toast or rolls, fruit, yogurt, coffee and tea. I stayed in the Colonial Cottage on an early fall, cool rainy weekend and found the electric heaters adequate for maintaining a comfortable temperature. Several friends and I were at Canaan Land farm for a reunion. Two of them and I had arranged to share two rooms and a bath in the main house. However the rooms were not ready for use (painting and ?) so I was upgraded to the Colonial Cottage with no additional charge and my friends doubled up in the cabin and Kari and Matt adjusted their charge to the additional person charge which seemed fair. This would be a good place for a getaway for a spring color weekend or full bloom spring weekend. It is definitely not a chain luxury hotel accommodation, but for those who want quiet and tranquility it is a good fit.
