After a day long visit to Shaker Village, a 10 minute drive to the Old Owl Tavern (part of the Beaumont Inn) was the perfect choice for dinner. As soon as we parked the car we were greeted by a ginormous need of mint...the scent was inticing. The tavern does not take reservations and we arrived at the perfect time, around 5:30. But 6 pm the bar was full and most of the tables were also filled. The tavern had good character, dark, woody...with photos of rick houses on the wall along with paintings of two fierce owls. We were greeted immediately and had the pleasure of being served by the most pleasant and efficient waitress. Enough choices for bourbon, some good drafts, and a deliciously made dry martini (along with a coffee for our tea toatler yesterday) started is off. There was a nice selection of specials for the day...some of which only a true southerner could appreciate (fruit gel topped with mayo, tomato spicy over cottage cheese topped with mayo) and some like cream of broccoli soup and steak boardelaise that even a yank could appreciate. Our table settled on two orders of fried catfish which came with a choice of two sides...baked potato and coleslaw were the choices. One of our diners choose the fried chicken livers that came with cream gravy...she chose the broccoli soup and corn pudding as her sides. Our tea toatler chose the country fried steak. I will term you that everyone cleaned their plates...it was that good. A final round of coffee, the OK from the waitress that we could pick some mint (which was planted in our garden at home) and we were off. Guess who is coming back? Me!!! read more

Table for three was cleared and handed to us promptly (they don't take reservations). Drinks were great (old fashioned and manhattan). Server was attentive and friendly. House salad was fresh with fantastic blue cheese dressing I assume was house made. Chicken livers were impeccable--crispy outside and tender and delicious inside. Gravy was nice (hint of nutmeg?) mash was acceptable but not outstanding. Chicken my companions had was good. Banana cake was outstanding! Cobbler was undercooked and not tasty (they gladly subbed in an orange/lemon cake which was great) bread pudding and cobbler both looked a little sad next to the cake portions. Perhaps think about human nature when you are pushing out desserts. It is very easy to feel let down when your dessert is tiny and your neighbor's dessert is huge! Just a thought. Recommend highly! We drive about an hour to eat here. Food WAS always great. Atmosphere was awesome. It's been a couple years since we made the drive and now this place is awful. Food was lukewarm at best. I had the Hot Brown. Expected for the price freshly sliced deli ham and turkey on a nice slice of brioche toast. Got thin deli sliced turkey pulled out of package. Never found the ham unless it was the same color as the turkey. Found the thin soggy sandwich bread slice. All was smothered in a barely heated sauce. Are these made ahead of time then microwaved to order? For $20? My friend had prime rib. Also cold, mashed potatoes cold, we've had much better prime rib at franchises like Roadhouse or Cattlemens. The blueberry cobbler was a soggy mess. Friday night, only about 5 tables being served. It has gone from a nice restaurant with good food, to a local tavern where they'll throw something in the microwave for you if you're hungry. Bring your wallet. My husband, daughter, and I came for an early dinner on Saturday and were seated right away, but the hostess seated us right next to the door, while there were six other four-top tables around the room that were available. We didn't appreciate being sat here, as it is an awkward spot and very cold and drafty, when other patrons who came in after us were seated across the room. The ambience is great, with a wood-burning fireplace and a charming, cozy interior. Our server was excellent and the best thing about our experience. She was attentive, speedy, and kind. The food was mediocre. My husband ordered the country fried steak, and he said it tasted like a Sysco-brand from-the-freezer meal, and he didn't care for the heavy breading. I got shrimp and grits; the grits were tasty and had good flavor, but I only got a few over-cooked shrimp in a sea of grits, and nothing else. For the price, it was disappointing. Located in a very strange area for such a nice restaurant and Inn. We had dinner and breakfast here and it was all delicious. A very nice breakfast buffet. The building is a historic mansion with lots of interesting rooms, artifacts and information related to the Inn. We found this place while we were visiting the Shaker Village area. The Owl (as a lot of us locals refer to it) is a Mercer County institution. The smaller, more intimate part of the Beaumont Inn, the Owl boasts a gorgeous outdoor patio for warm weather seating and one of the best bourbon collections in the area. I normally get the charcuterie board as an appetizer to split with friends but it wasn't on the recent winter menu. I hope it comes back for the spring or summer because it's definitely one of my faves. The service my friends and I had last night was above and beyond. I think her name was Tori but she was fabulous. I ordered the grilled salmon which came with a dill aioli and two sides. The salmon was okay--the aioli definitely stole the show. I will definitely be back but I hope the menu expands to bring back more of the regular favorites. read more

Wonderful hidden gem! Pleasantly surprised at the variety and quality of food for a pub! Wide variety of food choices from classic Hot Brown to fried chicken. While traveling, we needed to find a place that served Hot Browns. So happy we found and stopped here. The Hot Brown was delicious!

Very disappointed. Our server was very nice and did a great job. We ordered the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer...they were great!!! The side salad was also great!!..bleu cheese dressing was yummy. Finally we received our ribeye steaks....cold. No flavor, seems they were not grilled but perhaps cooked in an oven?...at the cost of $30 they were the worse ribeye we've had. Our bill with top was $165. Having never been here we had hoped for a lovely meal but was very disappointed. We drove back to Louisville, still hungry! Oh well. Heads up if you go there. read more

The Old Owl Tavern is one of the best examples of Kentucky or Midwest hospitality. It is the bar-restaurant attached to the Beaumont Inn, a lovely bed & breakfast in Harrodsburg and one of the must-see extra stops on the Bourbon Trail. We ate a meal here in September 2018 and then enjoyed a few barrel-proof bourbon flights in June 2019. Both times, service was spectacular, and they accommodated our requests with grace and warmth. To give one example, at the end of our tasting, I asked to apply a 10% coupon that I received as a member of Wise Owl Rewards, the bar's free-to-join loyalty program. The staff wasn't sure if it applied to drinks, but they asked the manager, and ended up manually giving me $10 off -- a bigger discount than 10% on the $70 bill! This is one of the best places in middle Kentucky to check out if you want to try some rare and interesting bourbons. The food is also very solid, particularly the house special ribs. read more

Quality meals, great service, and a wonderful bar in a town where the golden arches, the colonel and the bell are most of the restaurants in town. Their two year, dry cure ham is perfect, as is the boneless fried chicken. Their corn soufflé is light as a cloud. Atmosphere is dark and cozy, like you'd expect at a great tavern. The menu has a lot of interesting items, including the stuffed bison meatloaf. A must-try in your trip along the bourbon trail! read more

I highly recommend this restaurant especially the service. Billy was an amazing waitress, so friendly and very attentive to our needs and likes. She had some great suggestions for lunch. I had the red pepper soup, the special, she recommend and so glad I order cup. I could have just add a big bowl of soup. My husband had the harvest salad with blackened salmon. He said the salmon was perfect and enjoyed the salad with not a scrape left in the bowl. My mother-in-law and I split the double decker in half and we still could have feed two more with half of that. It was nice lean corn beef and the homemade thousand island dressing was amazing. My father in law had the cured ham and the corn pudding and potato casserole. Unfortunately, he felt the ham was too salty and he was not really like the corn pudding, but it is a favorite. I have had it and really enjoyed. To end the meal, you need to get the bourbon sauce bread pudding, it is the best I have ever had. That is my favorite dessert. Love that this is connect to the historic Beaumont Inn. Lots to do around this area and great historical sites. read more

This is my third time staying at the Inn and eating in the Old Owl Tavern. The service was good, but the food was disappointing. I got the chicken livers, which were tender and tasty; however, the whipped potatoes were room temperature, at best. My husband got the ribs and enjoyed them; however, he likes to add butter to his potatoes, and they would have been completely ruined if he'd tried to add the straight from the refrigerator butter to his lukewarm whipped potatoes. We did arrive about an hour before closing, but I wouldn't serve cold food at my home, so I can't imagine serving cold food to someone paying for it. Our meals were definitely not worth the money we spent. read more

Trying to find a local place to have dinner (appetizers). We've been to the Old Owl Tavern at Beaumont Inn but looking at their website yesterday afternoon I discovered there's an Old Nest Lounge/Pub. So we go there which is right upstairs from the Tavern. Wow this place is like another world when you walk in compared to the Tavern. Quiet, cozy and at the moment not busy at all. And you must be over 18 to enter. So for those of you that want to dine without the crying and running around of small children this is your place. We decided to sit at the bar. Connie and Abe were our bartenders for the evening and they were both great. We enjoyed happy hour from 4-6 and has the Kentucky Ale on tap which was only $2. Next we decided to order and appetizer, I ordered the fried green tomatoes and my fiancé ordered the junk fries. We waited no time for them to come out. Both were tasty and the temperature was perfect. Our plan was to chill here for a while then hit the local brewery but as Connie put it, if we do our job here you won't need to go there. They were amazing and attentive to our glasses offering another beverage when our drink got so low. They did their job and we stayed for several hours talking to another couple at the bar. This will prob be our local go to place from now on. Check out the Owl Nest Lounge, you won't be disappointed. read more

We decided to stop in for a bite to eat after the Ol' Iron Rundown car show. This particular restaurant is part of the Beaumont Inn. It's historic and beautiful and I would like to stay there some day! When we walked into the restaurant we were immediately greeted and sat down. My boyfriend and I both ordered the catfish meal with a baked potato and side salad with ranch. His daughter ordered the kid's cheeseburger meal with a fruit cup. Our salads were good. Not much to them really. Not a lot of lettuce and no cheese. The ranch dressing was yummy. You could tell it was homemade. The baked potatoes we had were a bit of a disappointment. You can't really screw up a potato but this one was not super soft and all the butter they put on it literally "waterfalled" right off. No flavor. The saving grace of this meal was the catfish and house made tarter. THE BEST catfish I have ever had. The batter they used was splendid. Perfect really. It was light and flakey with nice flavor. The tarter was really good too. Her cheeseburger was good - basic burger. Too bad the fruit cup didn't have other fruit besides the honeydew, cantaloupe, and the one piece of pineapple. Some grapes and strawberries would have been nice. The service was good and the staff was friendly. I really want to give this establishment four stars but considering there were several disappointments with the food I think three is sufficient. Keep killing it with that catfish though! I'll probably be back if I'm in the area. I would most definitely try something else on the menu. read more

What we got was a delicious prime rib dinner with Perfectly toasted potatoes and asparagus and my husband had a scallop risotto. Again, cooked perfectly and delicious. Been here 3 times in the past 8 months. Party of 4 every time. People were great. Staff was great. Atmosphere was good. Ordered Two hot browns and two classic Beaumont chicken dinners The first time. Hot browns were extremely salty. Fried chicken was the same the ham was not edible. Pulled pork nachos for appetizer. That was good. Gave it a second chance ordered catfish and pulled pork sandwich thinking the nachos were good the sandwich must be too...Again salty as all get out. Pulled pork nachos Appetizers were fine tho. Not sure what happened with the pulled pork sandwich and why it was so salty. So we gave it a third try because there aren't many options out here. Ribs and burgers. Can't mess that up right? Wrong! Ribs were over cooked and so was the burger. And they weren't hot, just warm. I'm no food snob and I try to support local as much as possible but Unfortunately we will not go back. Three strikes and you're out. Not sure how this place won a James Beard award for the food. I guess a lot has changed since they received it 2015. read more

Old Owl Tavern is a good alternative if you're trying to find a good spot just next to Danville. A lot of places have closed down recently in Boyle County so trying to find variety can be hard to come by. The family that owns Old Owl have owned the restaurant for generations and could not be any nicer! They have a full bar upstairs and downstairs, you can call ahead to make a reservation but normally they don't have much of a wait. It's quiet and cozy, I usually try the special for the night. read more

This is an excellent out of the way restaurant. I was in the area on a golfing trip with friends and found this place through Yelp. It was great. I had the shrimp and grits, my father in law had the double stacked Reuben, and another had the chicken breast sandwich. No one was disappointed. The chicken breast sandwich was biggest one I've ever seen. I will go back again next year. It's worth trying out if you're close. read more

The cakes. Oh geez, the cakes. The only thing better than the cakes is the corn pudding. Oh, the hymns I could sing to that amazing corn pudding. Oh, and the chicken "toughers" (this is blasphemy, but I enjoyed it more than their award-winning fried chicken). And the corn muffins with butter.... Okay, in case you can't tell, the food is freaking awesome and I cannot even find the words to describe its awesomeness. But the pistachio marscapone cake. My fiance and I broke up because I had to marry that cake. Don't worry, we're back together now, as my marriage only lasted long enough to devour that slice. But the moral is, if you also can marry that cake, it will be the best relationship of your life. read more

I ate here while visiting the Harrodsburg area and really enjoyed my dining experience here. It's small, so there was a short wait for a table, but it was just enough time to sit at the bar and order maybe the best Old Fashioned I had ever tasted. Our server was very friendly.
