Beautifica was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had in a long time. This is a very hard time of year to me because, I lost my 30 year old daughter to breast cancer, and she was born on March 8th, 1979, and succumbed to this hideous disease on March 23rd 2009. This not only reminds me of how wonderful life is, even with sadness in it, but reminds me also, of my God's (Psalm 83:18), beautiful promises, including the resurrection at (John 5:28,29). Do you miss the 1990s and the miraculous creation that was After Dark, a wonderful set of low resolution screensavers that festooned your screen with flying toasters and the like? Well wonder no more because Beautifica 360 brings everything you loved about lo-fi screen savers to the big screen. Set to a soundtrack that seems like the result of a ChatGPT prompt "Make an album by Mike Oldfield but make it less good" and you've got Beautifica 360. Had I been visiting the Chabot and this was offered as part of the admission I'd have enjoyed it more but we went out of our way to attend this "spectacular" and paid $40 a head. The rest of the center was closed and we were ushered into the planetarium and subjected to 45 minutes of run of the mill visuals emitted from a projector that might have been cutting edge 25 years ago but in this 4K world just seemed weak. As an aside the seats were very uncomfortable too and I got a sore neck. read more

I want my money back! My two daughters and I saw the Beautifica show in Fort Myers Fl. Very disappointing. The graphics were horrendous. The colors were muted and everything was blurry. Looked liked graphics were from the early 2000s. No real theme, just a bunch of graphics splashed on the screen. Narration was corny. Music was not good. It was very hot and uncomfortable in the theater. My daughter fell asleep it was so bad. Don't waste your money. read more

Watched it tonight in Houston at the Museum of natural science, disappointing, several people around me were falling asleep two families got up and left, there's a lot of marketing and hype about it, but it's like watching a Childs kaleidoscope or a screensaver on my computer with music in the background I was not impressed. Today I was looking at immersive shows in the bay to attend and stumbled upon another ticket sale for the Chabot dome. As soon as I saw it I thought, " good god, I remember seeing that horrific show a few years ago and so long as what's playing is NOTHING like that..." Which got me thinking, did others have the same reaction me and my date did? We had newly started dating, were madly in love, and even with the flood of oxytocin in our brains we both looked at each other during and after this with complete disbelief it was ever projected onto a big screen, let alone the Planetarium, let alone we PAID to watch this? As another reviewer mentioned, at a minimum the visuals were generic and largely very low resolution. It felt random, like someone got high one night and made the laziest compilation for TikTok that would maybe get 32 views maximum and left with 0 likes. But the most painful part was the voiceover. We had to resist bursting out laughing throughout the whole show because it was so cookie cutter--like this guy found a .99 coffee table book at Goodwill and ripped off all the most cheesecore and spiritual-ish pages to read aloud to accompany the imagery. You know it was bad if someone randomly felt inspired to write this review 3 years later, mostly because the positive reviews genuinely concern me. I don't know what those folks saw but I know I felt a little guilty for bringing a date to watch this show and it burned me enough to be wary of attending another show at Chabot, because who vetted this? read more

Do not waste your money on VIP There is absolutely no difference between the $12 ticket and the $64 VIP There was no $25 fancy program that was promised nor did the girl who is very nice at the table have any information other than we should contact customer service and they would "probably" send us the promised program Well the beginning of the show was exceptional it became a monotonous screensaver that you can watch on YouTube for free The sound system had so much feedback at the beginning of the show and the sound system in general sounded like a middle school assembly instead of something touted on Facebook by this organization. Well some of the terrible reviews have to do with the quality of the music itself it's just New Age I did not find the music bad or inappropriate for the show but I did find the Soundsystem horrific I think for people that I've never seen something like this before it would be entertaining for $12 but save yourself a lot of wasted money and avoid the VIP bullshit. You will get a lot better quality on your computer screen watching YouTube then you will the show though just as an FYI. It's a shame that the artist did not use more real media as in the beginning of the show it's exhilarating seeing yourself amongst the trees and the sky and then it just becomes a monotonous screensaver I do blame the management though for the poor girls predicament. I'm a big fan of Mesmerica, so when I found out James Hood had created Beautifica 360, I immediately signed up! If you've never been to one of his shows, it's hard to describe... the only way to truly understand it is to experience it first-hand.  Beautifica 360 is actually quite similar to Mesmerica, with the constantly moving images and patterns and feeling of being inside a kaleidoscope really. It surely takes you into a different world (or "worlds" plural), parts where you feel like you are flying through distant and imaginary lands and even space. And a mesmerizing soundtrack of ethereal melodies, almost fantasy-like, fit in perfectly with the hour-long journey. The music and visual effects are powerful yet soothing. James Hood's occasional words of peace and messages of positivity throughout the show are inspiring for the audience, without coming across as cheesy. And the setting inside the planetarium at Chabot Space and Science Center is ideal for this type of event, perhaps even better than the IMAX Dome Theater at the Tech Museum in SJ (which is where I attended Mesmerica in the past). Beautifica 360 is described as a "celebration of life", and it really does make you feel alive while in there, utilizing your senses to take it all in, and yet being lost in the moment at the same time. FYI, the moving images do make you feel like you are soaring at times, but as someone who gets dizzy easily, I can say this is nothing to worry about as it doesn't cause an uncomfortable feeling like that. Also, my bf said it's like a screensaver, haha. But I guess, a really captivating and giant screensaver that seemingly surrounds your entire body (and mind)!?! I absolutely love James Hood's shows. They are great stress-relievers and make you feel empowered, happy, grateful :) Beautifica 360 is appropriate for all ages (except babies... and please leave your noisy/disobedient/ crying kids at home). Be aware that you are not allowed to use the restroom during the show. If you leave in the middle, you cannot return. They say it's due to "safety reasons", perhaps because it's pitch black in the auditorium during some parts of the show. But also, I think it ruins the experience for others. For the Oakland show, there is plenty of free parking available at the venue. read more

Myself, wife, and 6-year-old daughter attended the Tulsa show and we were unimpressed. I hate to leave negative reviews for anyone/anything, but the quality of the show just was not there at all. To begin, we got VIP hoping the soundtrack included would be really cool--spoiler alert, it wasn't--but the price of admission was nearly $100, which had it met even half of our expectations might have been fair, but it did not. The screen was hazy and cloudy looking, out of focus, and my wife and I got headaches from staring at it--even though both of us admitted to each other later we'd secretly been wanting to leave. To add to that discomfort, the majority of the show looked nearly identical to Windows Media Player visualizations from early-mid 2000's. What a joke. There were a couple of scenes (like the intro) that seemed like they had put a lot of effort into them, but even those didn't "wow" us. Additionally, the so-called celebration of life monologue fell flat, was not moving, or inspiring. It came across as really corny and honestly, lame. I had really high hopes for this event, but I felt like it was a complete waste of time, effort, and money. I would encourage anyone else thinking of attending --at least in Tulsa--to spend your $100 on something more satisfying, like a bucket of paint and rollers so you could watch it dry on a wall. read more
