This little park is truly a hidden gem. It's a short walk from the jogging/biking trails at the…read morelake. The playground is all Kompany equipment which is updated and maintained frequently. The configuration is unique so it doesn't feel like a carbon copy of other spaces. I'll always think of this park as "caterpillar playground" despite the large climbing caterpillar having been taken out years ago. The zip line has also been taken out. There's an area for little kids with a mini-slide, little chalkboards and a bubble to peek through. On the big kids side there's a big climbing rope web, a big slide and a unique kid-launching rocker. If you fear heights, this is not the playground for you, lol. The location really can't be beat - some lawns nearby where you can kick a ball around or throw a frisbee. There's also a creek with plenty of rocks to climb on. There's a handicap-accessible porta-potty in the parking lot if you need it. Parking can be tight on weekends, but there are several adjacent parking lots and it's a pleasant walk. Grab a coffee and settle in at one of the picnic tables or benches. You may meet a Lakewood neighbor!

The neighborhood that surrounds this park is so cute! It's so quiet too. The park has a tiny parking lot, so I parked and took my walk through, taking pictures. I saw three other people during my visit. Two with dogs. I was super surprised to see a huge patch of bluebonnets. You don't see those often in Dallas proper, unless on the side of the highway. The trail goes to a creek and there are some homes across the way. It's so peaceful. It's definitely worth checking out, but maybe not a destination-must-go-now. I'm happy to know this place is close by, and maybe on another nice day I could walk to it. Great job to the neighbors for putting this nature walk together. It's lovely, and a good recharge to the soul to be out in it.

Once you walk past the organized rock constructions that make the entrance, the unpaved path gets a bit rugged and poorly maintained. I didn't mind it because it created a sense of "natural wilderness" that is absent in many artificial/human-maintained parks. I saw at least 7 different bird species and plenty of squirrels in my first 5 minutes, so that was exciting. Too bad it is such a small place! I was done in less than 20 minutes.

Much like finding a stolpersteine in Europe, this is a jarring reminder of when things were decidedly not civil in the United States. This review coming from a woman who adores an out and back but this solid 9 mile loop can really…read morehold its own to one. I love that if you needed to hop on the hampster wheel you could loop this bad boy 2,3,4+x and get in some respectable mileage. I've only looped it once which imo is a pretty lame but it is what it is. I have a much closer out and back route that I can hit for higher mileage without driving which will always be my preference. I have however been on this trail twice in the past month, once for the marathon and a week or so later when my son came to visit. It is a gorgeous run, but I have a water feature and lovely trees/wildlife on my local trail near me, so the trade off is driving which is hard to justify unless I loop it at least twice (coming soon). Parking is free, terrain varies over bridges, gravel, smoother concrete, areas of dirt trail etc. If you have any outdoor enthusiasts in town for a visit, it's a solid option to get them outdoors.

There's always plenty of wildlife to spot along the way, including this adorable little fur baby in the video attached. I love coming out here to soak in nature, get some fresh air, and completely remove myself from the noise of the world for a while. Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk, a solid bike ride, or just a mental reset, White Rock Lake never disappoints.

Review for the Disc Golf Course…read more I love this place. I only started playing disc golf recently because it's a more fun, less frustrating, and free-to-play alternative to ball golf. There's a lot of things I can say about this course, but I want to start out with the unfortunate cons first. Trash. There's a lot of it right around hole 5, then again from hole 10 on out. One of these days I'm going to bring some giant heavy duty trash bags and one of those grabber claw things so I can tidy up some of the holes. I already love this sport, and I think taking care of the course should be normal for all players. Same as in ball golf, if you take care of the course, the course takes care of you, right? Turner is memorable and challenging, but I think it's a fair place to practice. You will be exposed to a lot of different types of shots and looks, and I find new challenges every time I play there. Turner definitely favors players with more power on some holes. Especially the last one. For me, since I'm still very much a beginner, I see the longer holes as just more opportunities to practice! There's usually two porto-potties right by the practice basket before the first tee box. I don't think there's any public facilities along the course, which this place could definitely use, especially with how long it is. Perhaps that's something that can be pitched to the city some day. Bring lots of water on hot days because it's a really good hike. The distance and terrain aren't too bad though. I walked the entire course with my 4-year-old about a month ago and he only needed to be carried on the very last two holes. Overall, highly recommend. This is my go-to practice course, because the water hazards at Fritz keep eating my discs.
