Even though we got there super early, because of the holiday, there was a HUGE line getting into Devils Fork Park with the park rangers checking in with every vehicle - the rangers were turning away everyone without a parking reservation. I called Eclectic Sun and the nice lady on the phone said to show them our kayak reservation confirmation and that she would have a parking spot saved for us. Because we were in line for 1+ hours, we didn't get in until way after our reservation time but everyone was super nice and adjusted the time for us. The guys at the life jacket rental and down by the water helping people get in and out of their kayaks were also all very nice. All kayaks they had seemed to be in great shape, we had no problem using ours. Once you're out in the water, you can just dock it at any beach area you find around the lake (even though it was a busy day at the lake, there are so many beaches, you can easily find an empty one). We will definitely come back and rent one out again!

There are other stretches of the French Broad that are more aesthetically pleasing, but around here, it's a brown snake that doesn't seem impressive. If you pass through the city without stopping here, you're not missing anything given the profligate majestic clear waterfalls in the mountains nearby. However, there is a decent pedestrian infrastructure built up around this bridge, and several restrooms, launch facilities for watercraft, and other useful features. For the more casual or local user, it's at least a waterfront that has been well developed for public use.

The dog park was pretty empty on Thursday afternoon due to the rainy weather. However our other visitors who were very welcoming and had very friendly dogs. Stopped by again today, before road-tripping home, and it was just as fun. Lots more visitors and other dogs to play with or just chase. Our dog was even greeted by one of the Thursday people. Just a nice place to spend some time. The area is well kept and they have a good amount of supplies to keep it picked up.

I took a Lake Lure Guided Boat tour with Patrick (not Swayze) who had a fun personality and tried…read moreto add some comedy to the tour. We were given a history of the area; shown some of the places Dirty Dancing was filmed in the Autumn of 1986. We saw the stairs where Jennifer Grey practiced her dancing. The movie was set in summer but the filming was in autumn so the tree leaves were painted. The water was cold while filming so the actors needed to get warmed up between takes. Some of the houses on the lake caught on fire so that led to a fire service with a boat so they can get there quicker than by road for fires on the lake. A lot of the homes are second homes for folks so I was surprised by the size of them. One of the houses had its own incline system to get from the house to the lake. It reminded me of an incline railway. Another house looked like a castle on the lake. Some of the original houses were smaller. The views from the lake were amazing with the Blue Ridge mountains and Chimney Rock. It is a fun tour with great scenery.
